What's a ballet with real snazzy costume work, in your humble and/or professional opinion? c:
Oh, you’ve activated my trap card - asking about costume design and ballet and not expecting me to barf up the entirety of my PhD. I’ve also done work on the ballet blancs costumes (Giselle and La Sylphide specifically) but they are interesting on a theoretical level and not so much visually, so I’ll skip that.
So here are some personal favs of mine - the highlights, if you will. Caveat: long post, and mostly limited to the work of the Ballets Russes, because they are my longtime obsession and I think (and have argued) for their role in fundamentally changing stage and costume design (to say nothing of dance, and George Balanchine can sit the fuck down). I didn’t put that in my thesis but I wanted to.
Anyway tldr in the first decade of the 20th century a troupe of dancers from the Russian Imperial Ballet (later the Mariinsky) travelled through Europe under impresario Serge Diaghilev, for what became known as the Saisons Russes, or Russian Seasons. They performed both opera and ballet, and are probably best remembered today (if at all) as the troupe that danced the premier of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and caused a riot at the Theatre des Champs Elysées. The eminent artists that worked with them include Debussy, Cocteau, Picasso, Chanel - and these are only a few recognisable names. But my focus was primarily on the Russian roots of the ballet, in their visual language and presentation of gender and nationality, more precisely around the work of artist Leon Bakst and dancer Vaslav Nijinsky.

The crux of why these costumes are insanely interesting to me is because they are very specific to their time - they are a product of a resurgence in nationalist interests in Russian art (Diaghilev ran Mir Isskustva and worked with Savva Mamontov before he organised the BR) as well as a carefully crafted, highly artificial presentation of Otherness, expressly destined for export to the west. French audiences in the first decade of the 20th century (because there is a stark cut-off at the beginning of WW1) still had an appetite for Orientalism, despite their flagging colonial power. What the Russians brought them was compelling mix of performative Orientalism just vague enough to be appealing and fantastical, visually intriguing, and refreshing to a society that had otherwise come to recognise itself as decadent, fallen “victim” to modernity. In the athletic virtuosity of Russian bodies, Bakst’s exotic visual language and the soaring music of Rimsky-Korsakov and Stravinsky, the French devoured what they deemed a sort of noble savagery (yes, that kind). Despite the oversaturation of Orientalism in painting throughout the 19th century, the French identified a kind of masculine vigour and freedom in these live performances they found they themselves lacked, and longed for. Primitivism, as demonstrated in myriad ways by the BR, was for them a way to reconnect with a virility that they felt modernity had stolen, or at the very least, weakened. If you think this sounds eerily akin to the discourse around mounting desire for war to “cleanse” or “reset” Europe during that same period, you are right.
A few of Bakst’s lesser known designs from the archive, for context (including a reprod by Barbier which I don’t have the OG of but is saved in my Bakst folder so please take my word for it). I have a thousand more of these but tumblr has an image limit per post 😤
Tamara Karsavina, who often performed with Nijinsky, and one of my most beloved historical figures. The existence of a strong classical ballet cirruculumin the UK today is in part thanks to her.
One of her most famous roles, as the Firebird:
Nijinsky is by far the most interesting figure to come out of the BR. He combined virtuosity and strength (that most audiences identified as masculine) with a glittering, joyful, and expressive queerness on stage (and off). Some of his greatest roles are expressly feminine in their costume design: Le Spectre de La Rose, for example.
There’s a colorised version of this out there where you can see every pink rose petal on him.
While others are much more decorative but still markedly Orientalist (or Russian-Orientalist): Le Dieu Bleu, La Peri, Les Orientales, L’Oiseaux de Feu.
This last image above is not, the last I saw it, in a private collection. It hangs above the vestibule of the Palais Garnier archives (also Napoleon’s private hangout room) where it faces the sort of “diptych” version that features Karsavina, and on occasion I would stand below them and weep quietly).
Either way, there is an argument to be made about Nijinsky’s physicality and, more importantly nationality as a kind of avenue of permission through which the French could admire both his beauty and athleticism and even, to a degree, imagine themselves in his place while still maintaining that safe distance of Otherness.
But I would argue that his greatest role was the Golden Slave in Scheherazade, a wild, erotic orientalist fantasy that has little to nothing to do with the actual tale of Scheherazade. In it, Nijinsky - bejewelled, wild, ecstatic, (and yeah often in blackface) - cavorts with Zobeide, the Sultan’s favourite, in a very sexually explicit storyline. Both characters are equally decorative in their costumes, and both, in real life, were recognisably queer(ed) figures. It’s Scheherazade in particular that helped accelerate an obsessive trend in fashion (Paul Poiret was at the centre) for Orientalist design. Bakst himself did some silhouettes that are hard to distinguish from his costume design, and through the remarkable illustrations by Paul Iribe, Georges Lepape and Georges Barbier, we can see some of the blatant repetition of motif and silhouette in these ensembles that are designed, among other things, to be worn to the theatre.
3rd and 5th are depictions of costumes of the Firebird and Zobeide respectively; the rest are fashion plates. This doesn’t even include the lampshade dress - which I don’t have a handy picture of, but have seen in real life - that is a pretty blatant melange of the Firebird and Zobeide, as designed by Poiret. Below is one of my favourite examples: A woman in a lampshade-style dress, standing against a backdrop not unlike Bakst’s set design above, attended by a archetypal oriental servant wearing Nijinsky’s Golden Slave costume.
These motifs also proliferated in advertisements and in all kinds of other consumer products (perfumes, for example, and decorative objects). Thus, there’s a performative aim in wearing these designs that I read as a sort of pseudo-kinetic empathy (and can funnnily enough probably be compared to cosplay). There is an attempt here to channel what is being presented onstage, to reenact it, to physically embody it, in the way that fashion is, at its core, a tool through which to construct identity. That the French pulled inspiration from an openly queer man leaping across the stage dripping in jewels, and from femme fatal-style odalisques, says a lot about the visual and cultural impact the BR had on the theatre-going public at the time.
You can see in these fan designs by Paquin some pretty obvious references to the BR aesthetic: L’apres-midi d’un faune, Daphnis et Chloe, Scheherazade, even a little Le Pavillon d’Armide in that first one.
Nijinsky was not the only one to queer the stage: despite not being a dancer trained to the level of the BR troupe, Ida Rubinstein, no doubt purposefully channelling Sarah Bernhardt, was also a beloved stage presence, whether as the sly harem favourite Zobeide or as the strikingly androgynous St Sebastian, gayest of saints.
This is not to say there haven’t been wonderful and brilliant costume designs since - and quite a few known fashion designers working alongside dance companies, to great success or otherwise. I will, however, shoutout my favourite contemporary work: Akram Khan’s Giselle, which has everything and yet nothing to do with Adolph Adam’s 1842 piece. I don’t even want to post pictures because the costumes of the nobles (the landowners, in this very apocalyptically late-stage capitalist version) are so fucking breathtaking in relation to the overall design, and their entrance itself is probably one of the most spectacular parts of the ballet, that all I can say is just see it. Or buy the dvd. What Khan does gesturally is beyond words, what Vincenzo Lamagna does with Adam’s original score is visceral and haunting and churns my insides. I make a point to see it live at least once a season when it’s touring with the ENB, and I will do so until it leaves the repertory or until I die. It’s my contemporary Scheherazade. It’s a gesamtkunstwerk.
Tldr Leon Bakst is one of the greatest costume designers of the 19th and 20th century and criminally underrated.
It’s not ballet, and it’s not the sumptuous costumes from Boris Godunov, but as a bonus here’s my favourite image of opera star Fedor Chaliapine as Ivan the Terrible.

Tales of Arcadia Fanfic Recommendations - Part 4
Are you thinking perhaps, wow I never expected a fourth fanfic recc list so soon? Because if you do I feel exactly the same way! I thought I’d have some more of my own writing out by the time it happened and yet even before Wizards I was building up a good list of reading then the release just set off a flood of ‘em I’ve been duly binging and hoarding. Because of how long this post is getting I’m at the point of wanting it out my drafts and in the wilds before it begins to grow legs.
As when I posted the third list, I suspect within 48 hours I’ll find a new fic and I’ll need to start drafting a fifth one thus the cycle continues...

General Trollhunters
Hold My Hand in The Dark - Jim may have escaped the Darklands but even now it still has it’s claws in him.
To Say Nothing of the Dog - A Steli fic that’s very cute. Sometimes trolls aren’t the strangest thing you find out in the woods of Arcadia.
say that you'll stay awake for me - Another Steli fic where they’re both completely useless but it’s full of fluff anyway.
Candy canes and Sugar plums - Two very sweet Christmas themed one shots. In one Not!Enrique has to get ready for a photography session and another Jim as a half-troll gets mistaken for Krampus by a pair of kids.
Despondent Contemplations - Back in the old library that was once their home in Heartstone Trollmarket, Blinky and AARRRGGHH reminisce about old times. Contains minor spoilers for Wizards but not enough to remove from this section.
The Indecency of Courage - The thoughts of Kanjigar during his final battle.
Brotherhood - It’s hard to love a sibling who betrayed then later attempted to kill you and in return you permanently blinded but with some relationships it’s worth seeing if it’s still possible to mend.
In Our Times To Come - Jilaire, trauma comes in many shapes and forms but as long as you have the right people around you perhaps you can work your way through them together.
General Wizards - Skip this section if you wish to avoid spoilers
The City Never Sleeps - Douxie, Archie and Nari are now on the run trying desperately to keep off the radar in their new home of New York City but the flights of fancy of the old traveling days meet a whole new reality where things are a lot more expensive. For his new family though, this wizard willingly burns himself out over and over to keep them safe.
Home Away From Home -The sequel oneshot to the above and the struggle continues. Nari's attempts to figure out her place after a month of adjustment while Douxie seems to have lost all concept of things called plates.
a rescue from the weight you've carried - The ending these kids DESERVE.
Eyes Like Hope, a Smile Like Mercy, a Voice Like Justice - Without even realising it, Jim offered so much to the trolls of the past just by the virtue of being Jim.
Another Mistake - It’s not easy to revisit your past but in Douxie’s case he is offered a unique chance to see his younger self and the humbler roots he once came from.
Strings - Zouxie and oh GOD is this adorable and fluffy and I love it very much.
Waiting for Dawn - It’s over isn’t it? But Jim’s journey isn’t, not quite yet. His next task involves stumbling back home with the help of his friends and family and figure out the immediately of the after.
Center Stage - Douxie’s relationship with Merlin might have been incredibly complicated but it does not make the grief any easier to bear.
i've got to find my soul all before i sleep - Jim has been given a second chance at life and as a human at that but the niggling feeling of his old (New?) skin not quite fitting right anymore.
Stricklake
A Little Bit Pear-Shaped - Even when you think you haven’t taken your eye off the ball you find out maybe you might have and, well, then the title happens.
it's a lovely day in stricklake month - And Dreamcrow is once more coming up with the goods for us all to enjoy. The 6th chapter is nsfw as forewarning.
Dropout - Jim was human, once, then in the course of mere days he was transformed into a half-troll, fought to save the world and then forced to leave home and family behind as a reward for surviving. It’s no wonder that when given the chance to finally breathe again Barbara struggles with what has and what will be.
K.O. - The end result of Strickler’s terrible not so fun day results in a hospital visit but at least the upside involves the fact Barbara is there.
Alternate Universe
The Unwelcome Guest Do you remember Sam from the wonderful Whispers Within aka the Gay Uhl with a monster boyfriend fic? Well here he is a bit earlier than that still causing chaos but this time via trying to be ever so helpful towards a certain avocado coloured changeling who would sincerely like this to stop happening. Please.
left-hand florilegium - Even the great Walter (Stricklander) Strickler was a youngling, once, but no road a changeling may travel was designed to be anything other than a constant test to prove your worthiness in survival to gain a place in a brand new world.
Both Sides of the Sky - Jilaire with a historical regency twist and an arranged marriage that forces Jim into Claire’s path. On the surface he appears extremely nervous of something (Or more specifically someone) and she’s had quite enough of suitors making for a poor match. However, a simple act of kindness can bring with it an awful lot of shadows you might well have better off staying oblivious to.
A Foundation of Fluff - I never knew a ship of Barbara, Strickler and Draal could be so adorable and?? Yet?? The spite ship train is glorious. A foundation of fluff is a very apt description.
Broken Mirror - You might think this is another Unbecoming take but you’ll be surprised. During an argument with Merlin over his general treatment of others after the great move to New Jersey, Jim is flung elsewhere to wake up on the fabled day he found the amulet and very much human again. Not wanting to mess things up this time he goes to rescue Kanjigar before he is felled but nothing goes as expected.
Bitter Sixteen - The stalkling was set on Jim and in a lightning storm he was carried away but what if Toby never got that call to come to his rescue?
The World Ended Yesterday - The events of Unbecoming seem so long ago now yet here something went very wrong during the attempt to return to the future causing Jim to be lost to not only time but the very world he came from. Seemingly within another reset, he is not going to bury his head in the sand but equally the half-troll is determined to spare this world’s self future tragedy.
What the Night Brings - There are trolls in Arcadia, hidden underground and planning payback for having the surface lands stolen from them centuries ago. While there is contention in the ranks nobody dares say no to Gunmar the Skullcrusher and there is no Trollhunter to protect the dissents. Jim unwittingly witnesses what he should not and now carries the scars and no longer does he remain a human when the dusk comes, instead he is now some form of were-troll. What’s worse, he’s having to face this whole confusing mess alone.
Claire The Courageous - In a different universe Claire became the Trollhunter instead of Jim and Steve of all people ends up being the one dragged into the world of trolls with her. That however does not mean that Jim isn’t still involved in her journey in some way...

Chapter 3
"Let me go!"
Despite all the power put into the scream, words had been stolen by the infinity of the forest. The only sounds echoing in the darkness were the drumming of hooves and loud breaths coming out from both: rider and his horse.
Just when the man thought that he managed to escape the jaws of death, some impossibly strong creature knocked him off from the saddle. His body flew in the air before hitting the ground, breaking bones.
The young, chestnut stallion stopped galloping as soon as he sensed the lack of weight of his owner on the saddle. This well-trained creature turned around, ready to stand by the side of the man that groomed him since he was only a foal.
But at the time he got closer to the owner, something emerged from the shadows, sneaking up toward them. The horse's ears went wild, moving in different directions. He lifted his head high, getting a better perception of the surroundings as all of his muscles tensed, ready to react.
That's when a harsh red light flashed in the middle of the road in front of them. Despite all the previous courage, the presence of an unusual for the horse predator awoke his instincts.
Instincts that were saying to run away as fast as possible.
The dust picked up around the wounded man, and all he was able to hear was the neighing of the stallion. The sound was slowly fading away, deeper into the embrace of the forest.
"Seems that not even a horse is willing to help you," a feminine, harsh voice came straight from the direction of the crimson light. "I got the order. You must know how these work."
He was her target, a prey to hunt down for her master, her creator.
She had been said to look for the leader of the village in this part of the land. There was a prophecy saying about the downfall of vampires. It pointed at this specific person becoming the cause of it one day.
Her master wanted to take care of it in advance. To make sure that vampires will remain at the end of the food chain for much longer.
So there she was, just doing her part of the job.
"My wife..." the man managed to speak, being interrupted by his own blood, making him choke. "My wife is pregnant, I need to be there..." another spit of blood, "...for her and my child."
The vampire approached the begging man. Just to kneel down, so she would be able to look directly in his eyes. To see his fear and unsureness about the future of his family.
"Oh..." a seemingly sympathetic tone escaped her mouth.
Just to be followed by the dagger aimed straight in his heart.
"...but you will not."

Hesitation hit Amy along with the cold air of the evening right after she got out of her car.
Words said during the meeting echoed inside her mind, filling the space with doubt. She was well aware that her attitude during the gathering might have caused the end of this collaboration before it even started. That she might have just ruined the deal on which depended a lot.
Only because her pride had to win... once again.
It was the hour of her meeting with Kamilah. To her surprise, the place that she sent her to wasn't the building of Ahmanet Financial by itself. Instead, she got the address to one of the fanciest neighborhoods in New York.
Amy drove there on her own without bodyguards. She didn't let her parents know about any of what happened so far. In that case, she needed to deal with the situation on her own, praying that she would have only good news to share with them later.
Full of hope, she stepped into the elevator typing the guests' code that Ms. Sayeed sent her earlier that day.
"Now, try to fix it, Amy," she mumbled quietly.

The elevator stopped, and doors opened with a loud click sound.
Did she invite me to her penthouse? Amy asked herself in thoughts, stepping inside unsurely, slowly taking in the picture before her eyes.
Her steps were quiet. After walking through a short corridor, she found herself in a spacious living room with a view of the dining table and the open kitchen.
But there was no sign of the apartment owner.
With typical for her curiosity, she looked over the place. The girl was educated in interior design enough to admire a modernly stylized space. The colors around her were outweighed by black, light grey white on the walls and dark, deep browns of the furniture. Here and there, she noticed some accessories in the faint shade of lavender. Everything created a well-balanced contrast, pleasing to the eye.
After a while of waiting, Amy couldn't hold herself any longer, and she slowly approached the dresser that caught her eye from the start. What especially got her attention was an old photograph of the CEO of Ahmanet Financial and some strangers posing in the picture, all smiling. She assumed that the photo showed Kamilah in the company of friends.
But the only person she recognized from it was Adrian. He looked exactly the same as when she met him for the first time. The only difference was visible in his clothes. Everyone in the picture seemed to wear garments that had been taken straight from a different era.
Was it taken during some kind of costume party? Or maybe just a long time ago, but... how long? The girl put her purse aside to place one of her fingers on the picture, tracing over its surface, lost in thoughts.
"I can see you're the nosey one," a deep whisper made her jump in surprise.
Amy turned around quickly, almost knocking the picture by doing so. Just to face a smirking Kamilah Sayeed standing right there with her arms crossed. The girl's heartbeat increased from sudden shock, making her attempt to compose herself fail badly.
"Oh," Amy felt her cheeks reddening without permission, "I thought you were in a bathroom, or..." she was making excuses, but it got her thinking.
Why didn't she notice the woman sooner?
"I was watching you," Kamilah answered like she was reading her mind just by staring intensively at the girl. "Let me invite you to my office."
After a moment of hesitation, Amy decided to leave her concerns for some other time. So she followed this tall, mysterious woman, getting further into the apartment.
She found herself amazed by how different this room was decorated in comparison to the rest of them. It was way more cozy and old fashioned there between these four walls decorated with ancient artifacts.
"I'm surprised to see you alone," Kamilah stood behind the desk, inviting Amy to take a seat in front of her with a hand gesture.
Documents had been already arranged, waiting for her to read them. But suddenly, Amy lost her previous boldness. Out of nowhere, she felt intimidated by the presence of this absolutely beautiful woman.
"I'm not always surrounded by them," the girl tried to focus on the files as the following words slipped out of her mouth without her knowledge, "I'm a grown-up."
Kamilah smirked slightly at this but did not make a comment. Instead, she sat down and let Amy read the new contract that she had prepared for her.

Finally, Amy picked up a pen after she read the whole deal several times to make sure she understood everything clearly. She signed it and put the pen aside, having a hard time looking at Kamilah's face.
"Could you stop?" Amy whispered with unusual shyness in her voice.
"Excuse me?" Kamilah's eyebrows furrowed slightly, but she didn't take her eyes off the girl.
"You were staring this whole time," Amy did her best to not drop her gaze. "And you're still doing this," she blushed uncontrollably, making the woman smirk with satisfaction.
Kamilah's shoulders lifted and fell with a short yet deep breath. She reached for the documents just to put them on her side of the desk, giving the girl a short break from her stare.
Just to intimidate her with it again a second after.
"Dear...Amy," she started with a pause. "Is that how you'd like to be addressed?"
"It's up to you, Miss Sayeed," thoughts screamed inside the girl's head, judging her for the lack of courage.
"Kamilah," the woman corrected her before continuing. "I was wondering... Your family tree is a truly generous one."
The girl stayed silent, waiting for the rest, but Kamilah clearly expected her reaction.
"It... certainly is," unsureness grew in her chest.
"For centuries, every single newborn in Paines family," Kamilah leaned back on the chair. She twirled her hair around one of her slim fingers, "was a boy, am I right?"
Amy's body stiffened slightly, but she forced herself to nod calmly in response. But her mind worked faster from then on. She started paying more attention to the topic of their conversation. Because they were touching some delicate matters.
Dangerous matters.
"You are very well protected by your family," Kamilah was circling around the subject mercilessly. "Your parents trust you with their business," she tilted her head slightly to the side. "That must mean you are fully informed in the type of clients they are working with."
Oh my god, I am so stupid, Amy cursed herself.
At that same time, her right hand slowly traveled up her thigh. Her dress was designed with a little pocket on the side. Big enough to hide there a small object without arousing suspicion.
In this situation, even such a small wooden stake was good enough for self-defense.
"And yet, you're here." Kamilah squinted her eyes, letting the whisper to escape her lips. "All alone."
It was too much.
Amy stood up, ready to run, but she wasn't fast enough.
The girl wasn't a fool. She knew too well that she could never be faster than any of them. But it was the last chance left for her.
And it still failed.
In a split of a second, she was pushed against the wall with her hands firmly held down her sides. Making it unable to escape even if she dared to put up a fight.
Kamilah's shining eyes moved from the girl's eyes to her lips, following the path of the vein pulsing on her neck. Corners of her lips curled up as she looked down at Amy's right hand. Her fingers moved along.
"And what, care to tell," she ripped the stick out of Amy's grip, "were you planning to do with this?" Kamilah threw the weapon away, filling the room with the hollow sound of the wood hitting the floor.
"I..." Amy tried to calm down her breathing. "I know what you are."
It made the woman close the distance between them even more, their bodies almost touching.
"Enlighten me," Kamilah opened her mouth a little, letting her tongue run over her sharp teeth.
Amy swallowed hard at the view, trying to get her body under control, without success.
Finally, she managed to look into the woman's eyes, noticing a spark of crimson in them.
"You're a monster," words escaped her lips without hesitation.
Kamilah's eyes changed to red in a flash as a performance of power.
But to her surprise, the view didn't make an impression on Amy.
Actually, it caused quite the opposite reaction. The closeness of Kamilah's body suddenly changed from threatening to intimate, spreading heat inside the girl.
The woman leaned down since she was a little bit taller, bringing her lips closer to Amy's ear.
Close enough to let her hear the whisper.
"Are you afraid?" her breath teased sensitive skin on Amy's neck.
The girl closed her eyes for a moment, knowing how bad this situation was for her. Knowing that the anticipation created inside her was easily perceptible for the woman standing just an inch away from her.
That she shouldn't even question her own feelings. She wasn't supposed to react this way around the vampire. Any of them, there was no exception.
At least she thought so until that day.
"I'm not," she almost moaned the answer when Kamilah's hands moved to her waist, eagerly pulling her closer.
Their lips met, letting them taste each other's warmth.
Kamilah teased her, fastening and deepening the dance of her tongue, just to slow down soon after. To step back, waiting for Amy to follow.
The girl climbed on her toes, wanting Kamilah's lips closer, wanting to feel the ecstasy of this feeling forever. She attempted to touch the woman's face after freeing one of her hands. Just to find herself being turned around with an impossible power in response. She waited patiently this time, pressed against the wall with hands behind her back.
"I want to hear you moan," Kamilah whispered into her ear, thrusting from behind.
Amy's dress raised up dangerously, showing her legs, giving access to her skin. Kamilah let go of her hands, and instead, wandered her fingertips all over the girl's exposed thighs, making her writhe under this touch. Making her place both hands on the wall in an attempt to steady herself.
She was breathing heavily, indeed. But that was not what Kamilah expected from her.
And she wanted to make it clear only one more time.
"I said something," her voice sounded a little harsher than before.
Kamilah's hand moved on the inside of Amy's thigh, squeezing. While the other one came impossibly close to the girl's underwear, which was already soaked more than she suspected it to be.
At that point, Amy couldn't hold it anymore, didn't really try either. She moaned through her gritted teeth, moving her hips to feel the woman's fingers more.
"That's a good girl," Kamilah smirked, leaning down to move her tongue on Amy's earlobe.
From there, she moved lower, placing kisses on her nape, moving her blonde hair away from her skin. As she made sure to leave hickeys on her neck, her fingers were teasingly playing with the material of the lingerie. Amy's moans became more urging, revealing her growing impatience.
Desire to finally feel it.
Her aching for the touch.
"You have no clue how much it takes from me," Kamilah muttered into her skin, "to not devour you right now."
These last words were like a dash of cold water that Amy needed at that moment.
She tensed immediately, causing Kamilah to stop touching her. The woman didn't assume to misunderstand her signs earlier, but obviously, something made the girl change her mind.
Amy freed herself from Kamilah's grip, pulling the dress down with shaking hands, trying to cover her exposed skin. To cover thighs that she wanted to have touched so badly only a moment ago.
"I should go," she blinked a few times to collect her thoughts.
"Easy, darling," Kamilah was astonished by this unexpected shift. "I assure you, I won't bite," her appearance showed unusual for her concern.
But Amy was already moving back, making her steps to the way out.
She felt so stupid.
So reckless.
"I..." she couldn't find the right words.
So she chose to say nothing, walking out of the room in a hurry. Vanishing like a scared teenager.
Leaving the woman in her office completely alone.
"That was... unexpected," Kamilah said out loud, pouring herself a glass of gin.

A piercing scream signaled her destination.
The well-known scent of blood teased her nostrils, leading toward the source.
After barely a moment, she found herself standing between the buildings of the village, looking at the scene through the window from afar. She heard the faint heartbeat of the woman in labor, growing weaker with every passing second.
"There's no point in saving her, fools," the vampire muttered to herself, ready to turn around.
But something inside her broke.
The feeling remained for barely one short second, obligating her to save this family. Like she owed it to the man that she left behind in the forest.
Without thinking any longer, she used her vampire speed to get inside the building.
To move among people gathered around her target as if she was a ghost. A nothingness that left behind only a gust of wind that was immediately blamed on the open window.
She moved quickly enough to cut her wrist with one of her fangs, letting a few drops of it leak inside a bottle placed on the desk. Poisoning the purity of the water with a deep shade of red.
Just to disappear soon after into the darkness like the shadow that should have never left it.
The vampire ran fast, distancing herself from the place before she could feel the regret inside her chest. Repressing the disappointment in herself because she just broke the most important rule that all of them had sworn to obey.
Humans should never, under any circumstances, feed on vampires' blood.
Maybe if she stayed there a little bit longer, she would know that her efforts were in vain. Despite all the power her blood contained, it was not enough to save the woman. Her heart was too weak to survive the labor.
It stopped beating, just to leave the village and the forest around it with the burden of silence.
But at that moment, the peace of the night was disturbed one last time with a sound of hope.
Weeping of a newborn.

Aaravos the Unreliable Narrator: An examination of his bias in 1x01 and what we can learn from it
So a bit of background info about me, I have a Bachelor's Degree in Historical Inquiry and Practice. What that means is that I studied the writing and construction of historical documents in order to determine why this particular source was written, drawn or recorded the way it was. I have been trained to be critical of all historical texts, documents etc and to be aware of and locate the bias', omissions and prejudices, both deliberate and unintentional within each of these resources. This helps me to determine exactly why this resource exists and who its target audience is.
Because of this background I've found myself being continually drawn back to Aaravos' introduction in 1x01, what it tells us about Aaravos and what we can learn from it, especially when it comes to future seasons.
Firstly we must be aware and acknowledge that Aaravos will never be an unbiased narrator, because no one can be a truly unbiased narrator. Aaravos, like all of us has his own bias' and omissions that we need to be aware of when examining an analysing this introduction, not only to the show but to Aaravos himself. We should all keep in mind that he is isn't being 100% truthful in his retelling.
However, that does not mean that we shouldn't pay attention to this introduction, especially when it comes to the key details that he remembers. That is to say what or who he believes is important and therefore what we should pay attention to.
So I'm going to focus on 3 key scenes that we see during his introduction, 2 scenes from the Judgement of the Half Moon and 1 from shortly before Aaravos' downfall and imprisonment.
Scene 1
In this scene we can see Aaravos standing with 3 other elves, 2 Sunfire elves and 1 Moonshadow elf. The Sunfire elves are standing in front of Aaravos and the Moonshadow elf, one is holding the glowing Sun staff and the other is beginning to unsheathe his sword. The Moonshadow elf is holding a Moon sceptre containing a Moon stone at her side. Aaravos is covered in metal jewellery and his eyes are glowing pure white. Below them is an army of elves that appear to be made up of Sunfire, Skywing and presumably Moonshadow elves.
So what can we glean from this memory?
1) Aaravos and the other elves are leaders within elven society. He is well respected and trusted by his fellow elves.
2) The Sunfire elves are ready and willing to fight the humans and are about to begin not only their attack but also the battle. We can tell this because the Sunfire mage holding her staff in front of her, ready to attack and with the Sunfire warrior drawing his blade ready to attack.
3) The Moonshadow elf and Aaravos however appear to be less enthusiastic about the upcoming fight. They are standing behind the Sunfire elves, the Moonshadow elf, while holding what appears to be a powerful magical item, the Moon Sceptre has it pointing downwards and at her side. Aaravos, while appearing to have glowing white eyes indicating that he is about to cast a spell does not have glowing white hands which he has also chosen not to raise. Given the decisive actions of their Sunfire counterparts it seems an important difference to take note of.
4) Aaravos knows these 3 elves well and therefore they must be key players in the Judgement of the Half Moon.
Scene 2
This scene shows the humans being exiled to the western half of the continent. We see 3 Moonshadow elves, 2 on their mounts and 1 on foot pushing a human forward. We can also see 3 Sunfire elves standing guard, watching the humans leave, 1 Sunfire elf appears to be pushing a human. In the background we can see an arch, it's design clearly Moonshadow.
So what can we glean from this scene?
1) That the Moonshadow and Sunfire elves have been charged with escorting the humans to their new homes. We can also see that the Moonshadow elves appear to be the leaders of this mission.
2) That the humans are travelling through Moonshadow territory.
3) This time the Moonshadow elves are the more aggressive while the Sunfire elves are more passive. We can see this not only with the the Moonshadow elf in the foreground giving a human man a hard shove, forcing him to hurry up but when we see the elf on the Shadowpaw is carrying a bow in his hand.
Only 1 Sunfire elf appears to push a human. This is not only in the background but it also appears that the push or shove is much gentler than that of the Moonshadow elf in the background.
We can also see the heartbreak and devastation that the humans are feeling after they have bern uprooted from their homes.
This aggression from the Moonshadow elves is probably due to the fact that they are going to lose their not only their Nexus but also part of their own lands to the humans as each Nexus would have been built in their respective culture's territory.
4) The presence of the 2 mounts suggests that the Moonshadow elves may have long journey ahead of them and that they are possibly doing at least some of this journey on their own, without the help of the Sunfire elves. This could also suggest that this is somewhat of a handover of escorting duties. The Sunfire elved have escorted the humans from their territory and now it is the Moonshadow elves to do the same. Therefore the Moonshadow elves need their mounts to keep a proper eye on the humans and to ensure that none of them escape or cause other kinds of trouble.
Scene 3
In this third and final scene we come to a time not long before Aaravos' downfall and imprisonment.
Here we can see 6 elves standing on a rocky mountain/outcrop/cliff staring directly ahead with an army standing behind them. Of the 6 elves we see 3 are Sunfires, 2 are Moonshadows and 1 is a Skywing. One of the Sunfire elves is Queen Aditi and she is flanked by 1 Sunfire and 1 Moonshadow mage, both holding glowing staffs and with their eyes glowing and white. The Moonshadow mage is wearing horn cuffs, signifying that he is in a serious relationship. This could also mean that he has a child/children (perhaps the assassin standing behind him) Behind them we can see 1 Moonshadow elf, clearly an assassin and probably the leader of the assassins, a knife strapped to his hip and wearing pauldrons, 1 Sunfire warrior, her sword drawn and 1 Skywing elf, one of the rare few born with wings.
What can we glean from this scene?
1) That these elves are important to Aaravos, especially Aditi and the mages due to their placement in the foreground. Aaravos probably knew all of these elves well, some may have even been his friends.
2) Over the centuries the Moonshadow elves have possessed more than 1 powerful magical artefact.
3) That the Moon staff and Sun staff are of great importance and of great interest to Aaravos.
4) That white, glowing magical eyes are not exclusive to Aaravos and may occur when powerful mages use these staffs.
5) That the Moonshadow and Sunfire elves are again the leaders and commander of this battle, with Aditi appearing to be the head of the army.
So what do these scenes mean for season 4 and beyond? An educated guess regarding future storylines
Given that the other events that Aaravos references in his introduction, the death of Avizandum and Ziard the dark mage played out on screen in season 3 I think that it's safe to say that we'll get to see these two events ourselves at at some point on the next 4 seasons.
We're also going to learn more about the elves in scenes 1 and 3, see just who they were to Aaravos and what roles they played not only in his life but also in his downfall.
I believe that the Moonshadow elf seen in the first scene was the one who asks Luna Tenebris to spare the humans and that in doing so she and the rest of her people were forced to abandon not only their most sacred site but also part of their ancestral lands.
Sceptres have long been associated with royalty, at least in Europe and so it would not be surprising if the daughter of an elven leader possesed and used such an artefact.
We'll see what happened in this battle, what happened to Aditi, how Aaravos' plans were uncovered and who was responsible for his undoing, imprisonment and erasure from Xadian history.
Given that Aaravos has already gotten his revenge on Aditi and has stolen and corrupted the Sun staff as well as killed the mage that wielded it my guess is that he will plan on going after the Moon staff and the descendant/s of the mage which once held it, not only for revenge but also to fulfill his goals. If this comes to pass and Aaravos is looking for the descendants of the Moon mage my guess as to who this elf will most likely be is Runaan. The Moon mage in scene 3 is in a serious relationship, hence the horn cuffs and this could also suggest that he has at least 1 child.
This ancestry would put Runaan in the spotlight and at the centre of the conflict between Aaravos and the rest of Xadia. And just to make this even more complicated I posit that Runaan and the two elves in scene 3 are all direct descendants on the Moonshadow elf in scene 1.
In conclusion Aaravos, the mysterious, charming and manipulative elf told this story in a very specific way and chose to represent, portray and remember these events and the elves at the centre of these events as they were not only key moments in his life and but also key relationships at different stages in his long life.
These are the elves that he wanted us to remember and he wanted us to remember them in a very particular and specific way. He wants us to know that they are important, that they were leaders and that he knew them. He just didn't tell us how or why.

Hey dude, i've been looking through your archive for like an hour now and you've done some pretty incredible character designs - especially in the aspect of fashion and outfits. Do you have any sites or books you've studied from to develop these or are they just combinations of different clothing from different time periods / cultures ?
hey there! thanks that means a lot.
mm, ill be honest when i say some of the best reference i managed to gather up are from historical books you find. my fave section in barnes n nobles is that $10 one with the stupid large books like ANIMALS OF DA WORLD or 18 CENTURY CLOTHES surprisingly those books r hella cheap and have a lot of visual reference. and even if they dont, reading them helps you to research and you mange to go online and find reference for yourself. real life material is always best to look at. i know game concept art books and animation is rlly sexy and super appealing but everything comes from something irl… build up your visual brain library and make crazy neat outfits and costumes from the real stuff. i guess i dont necessarily have a specific site or book that i look to only. study a lot! study study study! go to a local library! go online! sometimes when im working i just turn on a random movie from another country just so i can absorb all the visual information and if i see something that i think is rlly neat, i can look it up and keep it in my refs to potentially use for art and such!!!!
pinterest is a place where a lot of people look up reference and create ref boards and that! fine but one of the reasons i might not recommend pinterest entirely is because a lot of the stuff is obv stolen images but also SUPER INACCURATE. do you know… many chinese/indonesian/korean etc art and clothes i see being labeled as like “JAPANESE ART” it’s… pretty goofy. that’s why you STUDY!!! you look up this stuff yourself!!!!! i use it to store some images i enjoy but.. for the most part i just make my own ref folders on my computer for my own use.
i combine lots of different cultures and time periods in my character’s looks and outfits. i mainly do japanese/korean because of the similarities but also differences in not just the clothing but the culture itself whether it be good or bad. my family has a lot of ties with korea/japan in terms of history and i try my best to show that in my character art. i love other cultures too and i always try my best to especially be respectful when it comes to designing. a question i always ask myself is when you end up using inspiration from other cultures what qualifies as stepping over the boundaries of “costume”, you know? if im stuck on stuff im thankful i can reach out and ask my friends and people i know about stuff like this too. there’s also nothing wrong with exploring stuff like this just learn to be respectful and humble. if you make a mistake that’s fine too! accept it and learn. i make mistakes all the time and ill continue to do so and that’s! ok. you grow from those mistakes and you become a better artist and person for it. i mainly bring this all this up because you mention “combinations of different clothing from different time periods / cultures “ and if i never studied and interacted with people about different cultures and periods i wouldnt be able to do it.
tldr;
study! look at lots of real life inspo, mix and match, have a blast. be respectful esp with culture stuff, it’s ok if you make mistakes! grow from them! have fun cause as lame as this sounds learning is super cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Political, response to the meme
*squinting* ok I'll dive in
There are definitely more more 2 genders. When we consider the two binary genders, we see a lot of what defines the others as well and the reasons for previous binary gender norms make sense from a historical perspective, but have fallen apart under modern scientific scrutiny. When we talk about gender, many people will simplify it based on genitalia alone, but it is possible to be born with both sexual organs or neither or to be born with one which is not capable of reproduction. Add in the fact that hormones typically correlated with masculine and feminine genders (testosterone and estrogen) can have any appear at varying levels to someone regardless of their gender expression. Also, the X and Y chromosomes only differ slightly. It is extremely common for a male presenting individual to have 2 X chromosomes, or for a female presenting individual to have an XY chromosomal makeup. Studies have also been done showing consistently that transsexuals individuals have brain scans more similar to their identifying gender than that of their birth assigned gender. In short, there are more than 2 binary genders, and what we think we know about those genders is quickly changing.
Abortion is absolutely justified, but since individual human suffering doesn't appear to have effected your opinion of the matter, consider what was written in a favorite book of mine Freakonomics. Abortion makes sense from a societal perspective. As many of you will be more aware than I, there was a massive and violet crime wave in the 80's. Then it kind of stopped, after abortion was made legal. Extreme poverty, addiction, mental illness, and other conditions strongly linked with criminality are also the kinds of things that may lead a woman to decide to have an abortion. In short, if those kids had continued being born when criminal conduct was predictable, we would've just seen a continuation of that psychopathic violence. You may say to me, that child deserves the right to live regardless of the possibility of a criminal future. You might say that those predictions make no moral guidance to the life that has been made. To that I tell you that without a neurological system, it isn't a life. The first Heartbeat identified is an electrical impulse with no self awareness whatsoever. If you believe life begins at conception, please consider the possibility of twins. The twins begin as one clump of cells, then divide into two when only one was conceived at first. Do we now have one soul divided in two? What about cases where one twin consumes the other in the womb? Soul math is hard, and not at all rooted in fact. The fact is that medical issues and huge financial commitments and other major factors make planning a family a difficult decision, and those decisions are not made easier by you, the government, or anybody else telling those involved what to do.
Guns don't kill people by themselves, that's true. And yet the US is one of the only countries in the world where the ownership of a gun is considered an unalienable right, beyond that of the sense of security of those around you. Other countries require complex permits, huge annual taxes and fees, ongoing education, and proof of responsible ownership practices. If you calm down for just a second, you may notice that with each violent outburst, ie, school shootings, these same points get brought up again and again and yet somehow no gun rights activists are willing to look at how that specific shooter got that specific gun. Background checks aren't going to hurt you, but they might save some 3rd graders. Being a registered gun owner isn't going to endanger your family anymore than a vehicle registration has resulted in your car being stolen, but it will help to trace and identify how violent offenders are getting their weapons. It may surprise you to know that countries with stricter gun laws don't have as much gun violence as we do, but they really really don't. They're not free of it, but its less enough that we deserve to have a conversation about what gun rights limitations people are open to. We owe it to our kids. The fact schools have been closed and we haven't had a bunch of school shootings this year has been amazing. Now let's see what else we can do to keep it going.
Illegal immigrants aren't illegal.
Most illegal immigrants were here legally originally, for example, overstaying a legal passport visit. The road to legal immigration is very difficult and can span decades. The legal process is arduous, and unless you have a lawyer and a strong grasp of the English language, it is designed to leave a lot of people behind. Its expensive, technical, inherently racist, and confusing. If we all want safe borders AND a melting pot then we need to reform that antiquated and unnecessary process. If you witness, or are the victim of a crime, you should be able to go to the police without fear of deportation. You should be able to go to the hospital without worrying the doctor will tell the cops you're here illegally. You should be able to live here within the law without worrying ICE is going to tear your family apart. Any perceived injustice over skipping the legal immigrants process is far outshadowed by the global crime of separating families. It is considered an act of genocide, and it is abhorrent.
Obamacare isn't perfect, but it has improved on what was there. When we talk about access to medical care, you need to look at it through the lense of social justice. If there is anything about you that an employer might judge you for (race, color, gender, orientation, religion, etc) then you've currently got a harder time getting medical insurance because our insurance system is so strongly linked with employment. Healthcare should be considered a right. I might be great at taking my meds and going to the doctor regularly, but if others in my community don't have the ability to see the doctor, they will he less able to fight off infection which will require me to see those professionals more often. And yet people are willing to shoot each other over dollar amounts less than $100 to feed themselves. Those taxes could go toward food banks or infrastructural improvements that sustain our communities and create jobs to create alternatives to the harshest existences we see today. The wealthy need to pay their share. Amazon, Walmart, and fast food companies pay their employees the minimum, causing those employees to draw on social welfare programs. Those companies should be paying living wages and the taxes our country need to thrive. We're being highway robbed, and instead of blaming others competing for your jobs or the social changes libs are asking for, why not look at the people who make it impossible for us ALL to thrive? I'm not saying eat the rich, I would never SAY that. But for real, what good does it do all of us to have one multimillionaire in our country? What good does it do the planet to have a lot of them? Their jets ruin our ecosystems. Their wealth is obtained by exploiting vulnerable populations and low paid workers. The laws we all abide by don't apply to those extremely wealthy because the law doesn't have the capacity to prosecute them effectively.

We sound crazy to people from other countries. The fact is that Colin Kaepernick was trying to highlight some real grievances with real, known, and simple solutions. We've heard all about Breonna Taylor. We've been completely ignoring the concerns Colin Kaepernick and others were trying to tell you about and it matters. Black Lives Matter more than your anthem, your flag, or any sport ever will. You aren't supposed to be pledging allegiances to a flag, the land, the law, or any one president, you're pledging allegiances to a people indivisible and regardless of race or religion or anything else. Until you can honor that pledge, your words are as meaningless as the contents of my toilet.
Not understanding the science of climate change is not an argument against it. It's complex, but not insurmountable. It's more than just where trash goes, it's also things like the large change in the gas types in our atmosphere since the industrial age began. It's also the way chemicals keep ruining our water supplies. It's also the way that the global sea level is rising, the temperature of our earth is increasing. It's the way that weather is becoming more extreme. It's the way that the evidence of these facts, and their causes, are all extremely well documented. These are all proven fact which are no longer denied by any reputable scientist today. The steps needed vary from simple to difficult, but they're necessary, and they'll stimulate our economy beyond what we can imagine today. Picasso/Rivera: Still Life and the Precedence of Form
During the run of his first solo exhibition at the Paris gallery of Berthe Weill in spring 1914, Mexican artist Diego Rivera (1886-1957) had an opportunity to visit Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) in his Paris studio.
Rivera recounts this solemn rite of passage:
I went to Picasso’s studio intensely keyed up to meet Our Lord, Jesus Christ.... As for the man...
a luminous atmosphere seemed to surround him.... Picasso asked me to stay and have lunch with him, after which he went back with me to my studio. There he asked to see everything I had done from beginning to end....[W]e had dinner together and stayed up practically the whole night talking. Our thesis was Cubism–what it was trying to accomplish, what it had already done, and what future it had as a “new” art form.

By late summer of 1915, much had changed within the Parisian artistic landscape from just the year before. Many artists had deserted the city, having been conscripted to serve in the First World War. Those who remained, such as Juan Gris and María Blanchard, were finding their own way with Cubism, while Rivera now had a bone to pick with Picasso, whom he previously professed to revere.
The source of Rivera’s ire was the perceived semblance between his 1915 Zapatista Landscape (The Guerrilla) and Picasso’s Seated Man (1915-16), which in its first iteration–as seen by Rivera in another visit to Picasso’s studio in August 1915–was known as Man Seated in Shrubbery. Rivera noted acute similarities between his canvas and that of the early state of Picasso’s work; namely, both works featured a similarly structured still life set outdoors. The Mexican artist’s very specific complaint was his former mentor’s liberal borrowing of Rivera’s formulaic foliage–scumbled patches of green and white paint on a dark ground.
The rumblings of Picasso’s plagiarism stirred some paranoia in the artistic coterie of Montparnasse, causing some to close their studio doors to the Spanish artist and to each other. Some of this concern was more mock than genuine; Jean Cocteau, poet, designer, and recent friend of Picasso, recalled “one week when everybody was whispering and wondering who had stolen Rivera’s formula for painting trees by scumbling green on black.”
Rivera’s widely broadcast complaint may have incited Picasso’s significant alteration of Seated Man (he painted out much of the disputed greenery), though in Rivera’s eyes this perceived plagiarism was the ultimate affront fol- lowing a number of instances that the Spaniard had riffed on Rivera. Picasso/Rivera: Still Life and the Precedence of Form takes as its point of departure another case study of the two artists’ works: Picasso’s Still Life in a Landscape (1915) at the Meadows, which will be displayed for the first time with Rivera’s Still Life with Gray Bowl (Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library, Austin), painted in the same year. Exhibited in close proximity, these two paintings together encapsulate the two artists’ storied overlapping of themes and motif appropriation during that period.
Echoing key elements of Rivera’s canvas, Picasso’s still life features the familiar foliage devised by Rivera as well as a slice of sky above. The compositional similarities of these two works seem to extend beyond mere artistic rivalry, pointing to a common theme that both Picasso and Rivera were actively exploring in 1915: a still life set outdoors. Perhaps during their discussion at their initial meeting in 1914 about the future of Cubism, Picasso and/or Rivera thought to take the “‘new’ art form” to the past–to the Renaissance idea of painting as a window on the world.
With Still Life in a Landscape, Picasso seems to be following the lead of Henri Matisse’s iconic Open Window, Collioure (1905). Picasso playfully posits a thoroughly Cubist composition–marked by multiple points of perspective and the fracturing of objects in rejection of traditional pictorial conventions–within a metaphorical frame conceived by fifteenth-century theorist Leon Battista Alberti that, prior to the age of Cubism (or more precisely, Paul Cézanne), would have presented a composition marked by linear perspective and mimetic representation. The juxtaposition of such diametrically opposed ideas fits perfectly within the game playing of synthetic Cubism: the integration of patterned and other- wise decorated, collage-like components (such as Rivera’s trees, which Picasso clearly did not consider proprietary) in Still Life in a Landscape underscores the two-dimen- sionality and shallow pictorial space of the composition framed by a sky and trees–vestiges of a simulated world. As a postscript, Picasso left the canvas exposed in select areas not only to create borders between elements but also to emphasize the artifice of the painting.
Rivera’s work from the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library includes similar visual cues: objects placed on a table bordered by the token foliage and set beneath–or within–a blue sky. A comparison of these two 1915 Cubist works by two different artists sheds light on their distinct vernaculars, such as their individual treatment of the compote, an essential component of the still life. The close parallels of these two canvases fuel the stories of spirited rivalry between Picasso and Rivera. It should be remembered, however, that in wartime Paris other expatriate artists were also exploring possibilities of the open window, including Gris, who preceded both Picasso and Rivera with his own rendering of a still life before an open window in June 1915.
Putting aside the idea of cross-appropriation between artists, a comparison of another composition by Picasso with his work in the Meadows collection provides greater insight into the artist’s Cubist idiom. Also on display in this exhibition will be Still life with Compote and Glass (1914-15) from the Columbus Museum of Art. Formalistically, the still life components of the Meadows work as well as their positioning within the composi- tion closely parallel – and proceed from – the Columbus example: the glass at the right edge of the table and the white compote at the center of the Columbus canvas help to decipher their more cryptic counterparts in the Meadows painting. Painted in the winter of 1914-15, Still life with Compote and Glass is a prequel to the art- ist’s experiments with placing still life in a landscape.
Picasso/Rivera: Still Life and the Precedence of Form will afford a closer look at the development of Picasso’s Still Life in a Landscape in the Meadows collection by presenting it together with its analogue from the Columbus Museum of Art as well as Rivera’s variation on the theme from Austin. The visual dialogue taking place in 1915 between these two giants of modern art will be further outlined through the display of Rivera’s 1915 Still Life with Bread Knife, a second generous loan from the Columbus Museum of Art. Beyond the rich anecdotes regarding the relationship of the two artists, this group of paintings provides an opportunity to find parallels as well as deviations between these can- vases. In spite of limited wartime resources, 1914-15 proved to be a fecund era of creativity for both Picasso and Rivera.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue Book Review
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
A precious biracial friendship that’s progressing to possibly more, a badass lady capable of wielding her smarts as well as a needle, pirates, awareness of illnesses instead of ignorance, and a grand tour of cultural hubs such as Venice, Madrid, Florence, and Santorini. You might have of heard of this book as it’s been making its round throughout social media and creating quite a stir.
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue while quite mouthy in title and in page count offers an exhilarating journey with main characters Percy, Monty, and Felicity as they leave England to embark on what they think will be an ordinary cultural tour before the three main characters are subjected to fates none of them truly want and instead find themselves in the middle of a mysterious blockbuster plot including stolen keys, sinking islands, ambiguously intentioned siblings, and a greedy, evil man (it’s not a true blockbuster without one of these involved). This book boasts an impressive array of cities and writing, capturing audiences with more positive than negative qualities that give it the popularity its currently gleaning.
So, as always, the biggest question is: is the book good? In my very humble opinion, yes, yes it’s fine-and I use the word fine on purpose here. The writing is witty, the vocabulary is strong and varied, the characters are interesting, and the plot is just odd and adventurous enough to keep you hooked. The historical elements involved are a crucial selling point.
The author, Mackenzi Lee, provides a delectable assortment of details and nuances that show off her history major quite well and give accreditation to Simmons College (well done-their writing program must be superb). She obviously knows what she is talking about ranging from the cuisine and traveling of the day to fashion and even customs such as how to address others of higher social ranking and Europe’s political quagmire of a government.
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is also ripe with a plot that is fast-paced, vigorous, and action packed. From being attacked by highwaymen, boarded by pirates, injected with bella donna poison, escaping a tomb that is being sucked into the ocean, and much more, the book doesn’t leave much room for boredom or pandering. The book is well over 500 pages and I managed to read it in a measly three days.
To be truthful, I believe it’s a combination of a being a good book coupled with the fact that it’s also the weird time period between Christmas and New Years where I can’t even recall what day of the week it is or what I’m supposed to be doing: hence, a multitude of free time open for reading and absorbing.
This book actually leaves me a bit impressed with young adult literature, either the standards have greatly increased or I’ve just been on a roll. Hopefully it’s a bit of both. All of the main characters are great in that they all break specific stereotypes and tropes that run rampant in YA fiction. Example one: Felicity. During a time in England where women were seen as submissive, inferior creatures to men in the 18th century, Lee does a great job of realistically catering to the time period as well as honestly portraying a view of women that is very easy to believe and like.
Felicity is easily the most intelligent of the main characters, despite her gender being refused a proper education that is rewarded to her brother and other men during the time. She is always easily the most focused and brave, as is seen multiple times in the novel where she is capable of sewing shut her own arm when she receives a gash, meanwhile Percy and Monty cower in the corner like the babies they are.
Helena also receives an honorable mention here for being both a bloodthirsty and compassionate character as compared to her bumbling and awkward brother. The women of this book were tough and intelligent, often driving the plot forward and standing up to their male counterparts in ways I found admirable without being cheesy or political.
Now, the next main character: Percy. Percy is a sweetheart. He’s also easily the most tragic character in the novel. As an individual that is dark skinned in a society that values the opposite, queer in a culture where it is a legally and morally sinful to be so, and the unfortunate bearer of being epileptic and suffering from seizures in a world that knows very little of his medical condition and the reasons behind his “episodes”. It was fascinating to learn about epilepsy in retrospect.
Epilepsy today is still widely misunderstood and doctors still do not know what causes the seizures in most cases. However, in 18th century England, I discovered from reading this book that epilepsy was seen as a curse from the devil and was often stigmatized to the point of being socially outcasted. The main methods dealing with epilepsy included bloodletting, drilling holes in the skull, or becoming institutionalized and kept away. Not many great options there. Lee does a fantastic job of including elements such as race, illness, and sexuality to an already layered plot and story that makes it that much more interesting and heavy.
Lastly, to the main protagonist of the story, Monty. I liked Monty almost as much as I hated him and he is part of the large reason I am keeping this book in the 4 star range instead of the 5. Monty is a privileged white boy who doesn’t have much to offer in terms of personality, intelligence, compassion, or even emotional depth.
I also understand, on some levels, that this is the whole point of his character. Monty was obviously designed to be spoiled, selfish, ignorant, and cowardly, and we, as readers, are supposed to see his character development and growth by the end of the book but I honestly think he (and Lee) fall short of this mission. Yes, he stops drinking and yes, he learns how to throw a punch instead of letting other big white men like his father and the Duke of Bourborn physically abuse him, but he’s also still intrinsically selfish and useless in almost all situations.
And while it took him 500 pages to suck up the courage to finally confess to Percy that he loves him and it worked out (good for them) I found myself constantly asking mentally why Percy would love such a pathetic sack of potatoes. And Felicity, I would hate him too, girl. He’s squandering the education you would kill for and he doesn’t even seem to understand why you’re upset about it. It’s baffling really, but probably too honest of a portrayal of privileged people today who don’t understand the blessings they have been given at birth because of skin color or sexuality or gender. *Cough*. But I digress.
On that final note, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is a good read, honestly. If you love adventure, interesting characters, and visiting new cities, you will love this novel with it’s jokes, comments, and witty comebacks. If you can stomach Monty being a dick the entire novel like I did, you’ll find yourself immersed in a world that is similar yet different than the one we live in and how beautiful it is that we can traverse between the two with just a flick of a page.
Recommendation: Roll your eyes at Monty’s stupidity like everyone else in the novel and then sit back with a blanket and a nice cup of tea to enjoy a cute love story, some interesting historical facts, and some inner reflections as you devour this fantasy adventure and all it entails.
