***
Stars you must have been going mad. Being a nurse on the starkiller base wasn’t the most noble job but it was a job nonetheless. Your parents were both high ups working on the base since you were born. You had only known the coldness that came with being on a ship devoted to crushing the resistance.
You didn’t have many friends at all, mostly keeping to yourself, trying your hardest to stay under the radar from the supreme leader himself. He was a bit older than you, but you had seen his rise into power. He was known to be nothing but stoic, a hard figure ready to crush anyone who got in his way. Though you had never really seen him. Just during the speeches had you gotten a glimpse of the of the obsidian mask.
It was a normal day in the medical center, tending to those who were recovering from injuries and making sure the place was sanitary should there be an emergency. As you were making your way back to your station a flashing red alarm went off. That only meant one thing, A medical accident in the prestige quarters. You had only hoped it was General Hux or another higher up.
Making your way through the corridor the pit in your stomach was growing. You dreaded the thought of having to tend to Kylo unnerved you. Maybe it was fear? Or maybe it was the feeling pooling in your trousers at the thought of being able to see what was under the mask.
As you reached the quarters the other nurses were rushing to the biggest room at the end of the hall. Kylo’s room. He was pacing back and forth, you noticed the giant red gash on his face, but where your real attention went was to his bright eyes. You were stuck in place until you realized you could see them so clearly because he too was taking in your frame. No matter how tall you were he still towered over you. You instantly looked down as you entered the room. Setting your medical supplies down.
“Master Ren can I ask you to take a seat please,” you let out meekly, sneaking a little glance to make sure he actually heard your voice.
You heard the chair scrape and felt the gust of his long black cape brush past you. His large boot came into your vision you were still looking down. Maker everything about his was enormous. No. You shook yourself out of your thoughts. These weren’t appropriate thoughts to think about someone who could make sure you disappeared in an instant.
Your hands shook as you took out the gauze and sanitary serum to apply on his gash. Looking up you noticed he was watching you intently, almost as if he was trying to read you. His eyes are dark, pupils dilated only showing a small ring of the coffee color irises. He was awfully calm, for what you had heard about him The man mad who ruined control panels with the powerful blazing red saber.
The silence in the room was deafening. His heavy breathes outsounded yours as you tried your best to keep your thoughts at bay.
“Master Ren I’m going to c-clean this up. It might sting so I greatly apologize.” The only sign of recognition of your words was the short grunt he let out. Maker that shot right to your core.
Even sitting he was barley shorther than you, his face at level with your chin. Taking a breath to steady yourself, one hand took his face while the other dabbed the cotton swab on the cut. He let out a hiss at the discomfort and you held that breath.
“Continue,” he said lowly.
You did your best to do your work, minimizing adding onto his discomfort when you felt a sharp pain in your head. You gasped at the feeling, trying to hide the face of shock in order to seem professional. Another while passed and you felt it again. This time accompanied by a voice. It was you. Your thoughts but not your own doing.
You were frozen looking down into his challenging gaze. Your mind flooded with visions of you on your knees, spit dibbling down your chin. Another of you pressed against silk black sheets, the strange feeling of something large in your most private area.
Your hand came up to grasp your head. “What are you doing to me?”
“I felt something deep inside you. These are strange thoughts to be having about your supreme leader. You just seem a little.. innocent.”
You felt the heat radiating off your cheeks. You were sputtering to let out an answer but nothing seemed to be able to come out. Behind this stoic demeanor there was something almost excited in him. Like he was fueled on seeing your humiliation.
“It seems the girl can’t get out any words. Can you?”
“No”
“No, what”
“No master Ren”
He hummed as if pleased with your answer before he continued, “Now care to tell me why such an innocent thing is having these visions?”
By this point he was standing. You were encompassed in his large frame. Looking down at you expecting an answer.
You couldn’t speak. There was nothing you could say to save yourself or to to lessen the amount of embarrassment you felt.
“Still no words.” His hand went and wrapped in your hair. He bent down with you, bringing you down until you were on your knees. “You’re a naive little slut who thinks she can take me.”
You mewled at his words and at the growing pressure from his hand pulling at your scalp. He pulled you closer to his face, sharing a breath as he stared speaking again. “I can ruin you. But you’d like that, wouldn’t you?”
You looked up at him with wide eyes, trying your best to nod within his grasp. You hissed as he let go of your hair. Yet you stayed on your knees the evergrowing feeling of wanting to please him blooming in your chest.
“Good” he said lowly. He heard you thinking again. “Take off your uniform.”
Your unsteady hands went down to the little plastic buttons on the top of your long tunic. Reaching down to pull it over your head. Next you kicked off your shoes in order get your pants down your legs. Once you were down to your undergarments you could feel him watching you like a hawk. Eyes scanning your body.
“Get on the bed,” you walked the few feet to the large bed. Dark sheets like the ones in the vision, soft to the touch. He made his way over to you, standing in between in your parted legs. His hand cupping your breast was gentle, strange compared to the harshness of his words.
“You know I can take what I want.” you gulped. “You’d let me fill all your holes with my seed. Taking you like the needy whore you are.” His hands traveled down to your thin panties. Rough hands gripping the fabric before tearing them right off your lower half. He wasted no time in reaching down to cup your heat.
“Already so wet,” he said pushing in a finger. You moaned at the intrusion. Thighs trying to close his hand in where you needed it most. He started to curl it in your tight hole. Hitting the spongy spot that you didn’t even know was there.
“Master Ren please,” you sighed out.
“So desperate to be fucked. So eager.”
You groaned when he removed his fingers. Instantly yelping as he flipped you over. You tried your best to steady your hands, gripping the sheets before what you knew was to come. Then you felt it. His large leaky tip pressed at your entrance. He let out a groan as he sheathed himself fully in your wet walls. You let out a broken scream at feeling. His stretch driving you mad. Before you knew it his hands went to your hips as he started driving in and out.
You could feel your essence dripping down your thighs. The pressure of his massive cock reaching the deepest parts of you. You were a mess of broken moans and curses. His bruising grip never faulting, surly to leave marks later on, tears springing in your eyes due to the mix of pain and pleasure.
“So fucking tight. Just a hole for me to use”
“Kylo please... gonna cum”
You didn’t think you’d be able to cum without any clit simulation but the feeling was just too sweet. He sped up his thrusts, hitting that spot just right, making you see stars brighter than the ones in the sky. The knot in your belly burst. You bit your lip trying to contain the whimpers and almost scream.
His thrusts started to falter as he was close to his end. He reached back into your hair pulling you up. His clothed chest pressing against your nude back.
“Tell me what you want, whore”
“Please fill me with your cum master Ren!”
The groan he let out in your ear doubled with the last harsh thrust in your sensitive pussy was enough of a warning before you felt him spill inside you. He started slowing down trying to ride his high the last he could. You fell forward into the sheets, catching your breath.
You both shared a sigh as he pulled out, tucking himself back in his trousers. The feeling of your mixed releases sticky and leaking out of you.
Turning around you saw he picked up your clothes before setting them next to you on the bed.
“Get back to work,” he said walking out of the room but before making it all the way out he turned and said “I want you back here after your shift”

135. Initiation
read the scarecrow and the bell on ao3 index | from the beginning | < previous | next >
Rei clutched Kakashi’s hand tightly as they entered the hospital’s lobby. Though she had been here so many times before, it seemed so much bigger now. Far more intimidating. She swallowed back her fear and followed her fiancé to the reception desk.
Hiretsuna beamed at the sight of them and in her eyes, Rei swore she caught a glimmer of enthusiastic knowing. Rei wondered what kinds of things Hitsuji had told her, of how often he had broken his vow of silence to the ANBU. If Hiretsuna had been provided firsthand accounts of Rei’s sickness and put the pieces together. Granted, the hospital had similar protocols on confidentiality, so perhaps Rei was just overreacting. Still, Hiretsuna had to know. There was something in her body language insisting that she had to know. And if she knew, there was no telling how many other people in the village knew. Rei swallowed back her fear.
Hiretsuna handed over a clipboard stacked with papers and asked Rei to fill out all the necessary information. “Dr. Gon will call you back momentarily!” she chirped. Rei nodded slowly, absently, as Kakashi placed a hand on her shoulder and guided her to a row of seats near a window.
Slumping down, Rei stared at the paperwork and the pen began to quiver in her hand. The letters all started to merge and blend and nothing seemed to make sense. As if she was trying to read a document in a language that she did not understand. What was her ninja registration number? What was the name of her insurance? What was her date of birth? She couldn’t remember. “K-Kakashi…” she croaked, reaching for his hand and squeezing it tightly. He surveyed the waiting room, eyeing anxious family members and ER patients alike, but the moment he heard her voice his gaze snapped straight back to her. Rei cleared her throat. “I need help…” she whispered. Without another moment of hesitation, Kakashi took the clipboard in his lap and the pen from her hand and began filling out her information as naturally as breathing. “Sorry…” Rei whispered.
“What do you have to be sorry about?” Kakashi asked as his pen skated down the page. “You’re just lucky I have all of your information memorized” he then joked. An attempt to lighten the mood. Rei laughed nervously in response, clenched her fist around the hem of her tunic. It was obvious to him just how panicked this whole thing had left her. And really, why wouldn’t it? Not that Kakashi was not nervous, as well, because he was, but he was not the one carrying their child. His body was not on the cusp of unimaginable change. He was merely a companion, a catalyst, a beacon of support.
Once finished, Kakashi returned the paperwork to Hiretsuna who assured him that they would be called back any minute now. “I wonder if the doctor’s been busy” Kakashi mused as he sat back down beside Rei.
“What if he doesn’t have time for us? What if someone more important comes in and they make us reschedule?” Rei asked frantically.
Kakashi rested a gentle hand on her thigh. “I don’t think they’d do that” he assured her. “Besides, we’ve already checked in. They can’t bail on us now. Or at least they shouldn’t.”
I wish they would, Rei momentarily thought to herself. Now that she was here, she was desperate to leave. Her eyes snapped to every exit sign, red and foreboding. For all intents and purposes, she was terrified.
“Everything will be fine. Promise” Kakashi smiled, sensing her panic. He squeezed her thigh lightly, tilted his head, the fabric of his mask wrinkling around the corners of his mouth. Rei tried to take comfort in his confidence. She wondered if he was only saying these things to make her feel better, or if he really, genuinely meant it. Either way, she had no time left to ponder. The doctor appeared in the hallway, locked his eyes on them, and called them back into an exam room.
Dr. Gon was a rather tall, skinny man with angular features and taut lips. He was not a very assuring looking man, which only heightened Rei’s anxiety further. He said next to nothing as he guided them into the exam room and motioned for Rei to sit on the table. She had only met him a handful of times before, normally on emergency visits after particularly dangerous missions. He did good work, but his blunt and rather distant manner lacked something to be desired. Especially at a time like this. He had the type of face from which you would expect to hear that you only had three weeks to live. Rei shuddered and gripped the edge of the exam table, the sanitary paper crinkling beneath her fingers.
Dr. Gon worked deftly as he began first with a generic physical, checking Rei’s blood pressure, respiration, and temperature. “What kinds of symptoms have you been having?” he asked bluntly.
“Um…lots of nausea. Kind of tired and bloated” Rei explained. Then, swallowing hard, she murmured, “Breast tenderness…” She thought of the night before, of Kakashi’s hands on her body, of the sharp, needle-like pains radiating outward from her nipple. She glanced to Kakashi, wondered if he was still disappointed.
“Mmhmm” Dr. Gon replied. He pressed a cold stethoscope to Rei’s chest, listened to her heart. “Pretty rapid heartbeat” he quipped under his breath. Rei gritted her teeth. Thanks, I have anxiety, she thought to herself. He moved the stethoscope to her back, instructed her to take deep breaths. Checked her ears, nose, throat, reflexes. “When was the first date of your last menstrual period?”
               “April 29th…” Rei muttered.
Dr. Gon cocked a brow, hummed. “I’m surprised you didn’t come in sooner” he remarked. He motioned for her to then step around a corner and stand on the scale, scrutinizing the number and scribbling some notes on his pad.
Kakashi stayed by Rei’s side the entire time, never more than three feet away from her as much as he could help it. He wasn’t particularly fond of this doctor but he knew they had little to no choice in the matter. The hospital was busy. They had to take what they could get.
“We’ll have to do bloodwork in order to confirm the pregnancy and check for any diseases and disorders you might be a carrier for” Dr. Gon explained, guiding them back down the hallway. Then, pulling a small lidded cup from the nurse’s station, added with a taunting smile “As well as a urine test.”
Rei snatched the cup from him and made her way into the bathroom, muttering under her breath about how she was beginning to feel like a science experiment. Much like with the home pregnancy test, she found that her nerves got the better of her and it took her a long while to muster the energy to pee. Once she had, she handed the sample to the doctor and turned on her heels into the lab.
Once inside, she was greeted by a phlebotomist named Sashimasu who, much like Dr. Gon, was not a very reassuring looking man. He was curt and blank-faced, motioning for Rei to sit down as he slapped on a pair of latex gloves and began preparing his needles. “You’re not the type to pass out, are you?” he asked bluntly. Clearly he had seen his fair share of fainters and had grown weary of them. Rei shook her head. Sashimasu situated her arm on the armrest, pausing for only a moment as he readied his needle at her inner elbow. Rei’s heart leapt into her throat as she caught his gaze skate down to her wrist, surely surveying the faint scars lining her forearm. The two of them locked eyes for a brief moment and Rei almost felt tempted to explain herself but without another word, Sashimasu pursed his lips and stabbed her in the arm.
Rei chewed the inside of her cheek as she watched her blood siphon into the little vials—one, two, three, four. She tried to steady her breathing, tried not to think about the consistent pinch of the needle in her vein. How pathetic, she thought to herself. For someone who had cut herself on purpose before, she would’ve expected herself to be braver.
Dr. Gon came back for them once they were finished, guiding them down yet another hallway. “Results on the blood tests should take about thirty to forty-five minutes” he explained. “In the meantime, we’ll need to conduct a breast and pelvic exam and, once we have the results, your first ultrasound.”
Across the hall, Dr. Gon introduced Rei to a young medic-nin named Haishin—a freshly graduated gynecologist. He was a cherub-faced young man with a bright smile and even brighter eyes. Rei squeezed Kakashi’s hand tightly as he ushered them into another exam room and handed Rei a hospital gown.
“We’ll just need you to put that on and then we can get started!” Haishin smiled, and then closed the door.
Rei undressed slowly, methodically, procrastinating. She tugged her tunic up over her head, getting tangled in the tails of the split-skirt. Meanwhile, Kakashi explored the room. He had never been in an exam room quite like this before. He studied the posters on the wall, one showing happy faces smiling about birth control options, the other a fetal development chart. “What stage do you think our baby is at right now?” Kakashi asked over his shoulder.
Stumbling out of her pants, Rei replied, “I don’t know, probably whichever one looks like a sea monkey.”
Kakashi chuckled under his breath, knowing she was likely right. Rei came nearer, handing Kakashi her wadded clothes and then turned so as to allow him to tie the back of her hospital gown. Once finished, he gently helped her onto the exam table. “Do you think I should tell him we’re ready?” Kakashi asked after a moment of silence.
“If you want to” Rei croaked. “Or we can just wait until he comes back. Unless he forgets about us and we’re stuck here forever.”
“I can’t tell if that means you want to procrastinate or not” Kakashi chuckled.
“It means” Rei started, “That I just want to get this over with.”
“Fair enough.” Kakashi idled for a moment, his fiancée’s anxiety almost palpable. He took hold of one of the stirrups at the end of the table, turned it this way and that. The hinges squeaked as he did so. Rei shot him a fierce glare, a warning for him to stop. Kakashi froze, smiled sheepishly, removed his hand. His one exposed eye then trailed to the tray of instruments on a table nearby. They all looked so foreign and metallic and cold. “They look like torture devices” Kakashi quipped under his breath. He then picked up a strange contraption with two rounded handles almost like a beak. “What does this one do?” Kakashi asked, toying with it.
A faint knock and the door creaked open. Haishin grinned and replied, “Those are used to open up the cervix!”
Startled, Kakashi tossed the speculum back onto the tray with a nervous laugh. He hoped they cleaned those thoroughly between each use. He wiped his hands on his pants anyway, and muttered a sheepish, “S-Sorry.”
“That’s quite alright!” Haishin replied. He pulled a rolling stool over, snapped a pair of latex gloves on. “It’s nice to see expecting fathers take an active role in their wives’ pregnancy!”
Kakashi liked the sound of that: his wife’s pregnancy. A small smile touched his lips at the thought, erasing all of his previous embarrassment. Which was then quickly dashed yet again by the reality of the gynecology appointment. Kakashi hugged Rei’s clothes to his chest as he watched Haishin work. Rei winced when he examined her breasts, instinctively swatting his hand away from the pain. Then Haishin tapped her leg with a soft smile to signal it was time for her to put them up. While Kakashi knew it was necessary, seeing another man root around in Rei’s most private space made him slightly possessive and panicked. He dropped his eyes to the floor, tried not to think about it. At least this would be the worst of it, he reminded himself. They would get this over with and then they’d move on to the ultrasound where they’d finally be able to see their baby. It would all be worth it.
Once the breast and pelvic exam was complete, Haishin informed them that he was going to touch base with Dr. Gon on the results of the labwork and that they would be back momentarily.
“Great” Rei sighed, falling back on the exam table. “More waiting.”
Kakashi rubbed her forearm in comfort. “But it’ll be worth it, right?” he asked.
Huffing her bangs out of her face, Rei nodded. “I know. It’s just…a lot.”
“You’re doing great, though” Kakashi grinned.
Rei looked up at him and her heart soared. In his eyes, all she saw was love and confidence. Support. “I just hope this gets easier” she whispered. Perhaps with time, the anxiety of prenatal appointments would wane and feel routine. After all, by the end of her pregnancy she expected to be an expert in her own biology.
Kakashi tugged his mask down for only a moment to plant a quick kiss on Rei’s forehead. “It will” he assured her. “And I’ll be right here for all of it. Promise.”
Rei smiled softly, bittersweetly at him. She took his hand in hers, gave it a light squeeze. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep” she whispered. As much as she wanted to take his words at full value, she knew the reality of the situation was far more bleak. Kakashi was a busy man. He worked hard and was given plenty of assignments, which proved great for their finances but not so much for dependency’s sake. Could he really manage to miss work every time she had a doctor’s appointment? She supposed if he was committed enough, and there was no reason for her to believe that he was not. After all, the ring on her finger was a sure enough sign of that. Still, Rei didn’t even think she could ask such a thing of him. It would be cruel to expect them to both sacrifice their jobs for the sake of their unborn child. But perhaps Rei was still just bitter and indecisive. Thoughts of her own career still weighed heavy on her mind. With how involved Lady Tsunade was in Konoha’s medical field, Rei knew she was running out of time. The hokage would find out eventually.
And that was if the pregnancy was even viable. Rei glanced to the clock, chewed her lower lip. She feared for the future, for the rapid changes and the confrontations and the results that Dr. Gon would return with. What if their home pregnancy test ended up being a false positive? What if they had gotten their hopes up for nothing? Or what if she was pregnant, but the fetus was not viable? Or her uterus inhospitable, leaving the pregnancy doomed to fail? Rei pressed a hand to her stomach, her nausea mounting, and a shiver ran down her spine.
“Hey” Kakashi whispered, squeezing her hand in solidarity. “Everything is going to be fine.” Rei looked up at him with uncertain panic, swallowed hard. How did he know? How could he really, truly be so sure? Before she could open her mouth, before she could spill out all of her nagging fears and insecurities, there was a knock at the door and Dr. Gon strode into the room.
He slipped inside silently, a young female medic nin following close behind. That can’t be a good sign, Rei thought to herself. Kakashi could feel Rei’s body tense as Dr. Gon plopped down on the rolling stool by the desk, flipping through the stack of papers on his clipboard with great focus. Then, meeting Rei’s gaze with his own morbid face, he said, “Well, you’re definitely pregnant.” Equal parts panic and relief swept over Rei’s body in that moment. The ultimate confirmation of her pregnancy was of course worth celebrating, but also posed a daunting new challenge.
Kakashi peered over at Dr. Gon’s clipboard, trying to parse even a fragment of information from the chicken scratch. “Does, uh…does everything look okay?” he asked. “I mean, are Rei and the baby healthy? Will they be alright?”
Dr. Gon grimaced at Kakashi’s invasiveness. “All the tests came back normal. No deficiencies or abnormalities. Your immunity looks good, no signs of anemia, blood sugar looks healthy. You’re not at any risk for genetic conditions” he explained. It was so strange to hear such positive news from an otherwise grim face. “We’ll just need to conduct an ultrasound to confirm a heartbeat and gestational age” he then added. With a flick of his hand, he signalled for the medic nin at his aide to get things ready. She momentarily returned rolling in a rather complicated looking machine.
The medic smiled at them as she began setting things up, her opal eyes identifying her as a Hyuga. “My name’s Miru, I’ll be conducting your ultrasound today! It’s so great to meet both of you” she beamed. She had kind eyes and a soft smile. She was perhaps the most reassuring person Rei had met in the hospital thus far. Miru made her feel safe. “Now we get to the fun part: how far along are we?” she asked.
Rei cleared her throat, suppressed a nervous laugh as she looked from Dr. Gon to the ultrasound tech and back. “I thought it was your job to tell us that.”
Dr. Gon stared blankly at her, unamused. “It is” he replied bluntly. He began booting up the machinery as the female medic turned to the sink at the back of the room, washing her hands thoroughly and slipping into a pair of latex gloves. “Based on the date of your last menstrual period and when you believe you conceived, that would put you at around six weeks pregnant” he explained. Six weeks. Rei nodded slowly as she processed this information. Logically, it made sense. The math added up, even if math was not her strong suit. And yet the daunting realization that this was only six out of forty intimdated her. The vastness of it all was too much to digest—there was still so much ahead of them. This was really only the beginning. “Normally we don’t do ultrasounds this early” Dr. Gon went on to explain, “but with a job as dangerous as yours, we need to take extra precautions.”
“Extra precautions…?” Rei asked slowly, uncertainly.
Nodding, Dr. Gon replied, “We need to ensure that no trauma has already come to the fetus while out in the field.” He pointed then to a small poster by the door illustrating the various shinobi ranks and the level of danger each pose to pregnancy. Civilians and genin were of course very low, chunin were in cautionary yellow, and jonin were in danger red. The ANBU, however, were in an entire league of their own with a terrifying black skull and crossbones. Code: suicide. Rei gulped, a shiver rushing down her spine. She thought of what Kakashi had told her earlier that week, his insistence that she must quit her job. Rei swallowed back her fear with her own impending nausea.
“Alright, Ms. Natsuki, if you could just lay back for me and we can start the ultrasound” Miru instructed. Rei leaned back slowly, lifting her gown up to her breasts. Dr. Gon immediately shot her a confused glare.
“I-I thought…isn’t this where you squirt that weird gel on me and move the little thingy around?” Rei asked meekly.
Miru shook her head as she rolled across the room on another stool and began booting up the ultrasound machine. “This early in your pregnancy, the fetus would be too small for a successful abdominal ultrasound” she explained.
Dr. Gon nodded. “Instead, we’ll need to do things transvaginally.” From the cart upon which the machine was situated, Miru pulled out a rather large wand, expertly rolling a condom over the shaft. Rei’s face paled.
Great, she thought to herself. Just when I thought they were done poking around down there. Dr. Gon tapped her calf, a silent command for her to put her legs up again. Defeated, Rei sighed and shifted as Kakashi looped an arm under her knee and helped situate her back in the stirrups.
The ultrasound machine itself was rather complicated looking with a small screen and a keyboard of various buttons. Rei held Kakashi’s hand tightly as Miru inserted the wand and suddenly a hazy image appeared on the screen. Rei’s breath hitched in her throat.
“There’s your baby!” Miru exclaimed, pointing to a strange amalgamation of abstract grayscale on the screen. Amid a sea of white noise was a small black bean and within that bean, a tiny, strange, gray shape. Their baby. Kakashi squeezed Rei’s hand as the image shifted with Miru’s exploration, swallowing back the small sob rising in his throat. The room filled with the steady thump of their child’s heart.
“K-Kakashi…do you heart that?” Rei whispered, eyes transfixed on the ultrasound’s screen. A small smile touched her lips.
Dr. Gon, standing by, gave a single nod. “Nice, strong heartbeat” he replied and though Rei knew she had nothing to do with it, the compliment made her feel proud.
“Based on the information you gave us, and the size of the fetus here, I think it’s safe to say you’re definitely at six weeks pregnant” Miru explained. She counted the months on her fingers then before concluding, “That would put your due date at around January 31st.”
Visions of blustery winters, of twinkling lights in trees and new beginnings, filled Rei’s mind. January 31st. It felt so far away and yet she knew it would all go by so quickly—for better or for worse.
Once the ultrasound was completed, Dr. Gon called them back into his small office for a consultation. The technical aspects of the appointment may have been finished but there was still plenty of logistical issues to address. Dr. Gon explained Rei and Kakashi’s responsibilities moving forward, of how often she would have doctor’s appointments and how from this point forward, she would be taken care of by the hospital’s obstetrics department—Haishin and all the other midwifes employed. “All of your tests are normal, so you should have nothing to worry about there” Dr. Gon continued, pointing to a bunch of incomprehensible values on her lab reports. “My only area of concern is that your body weight is a little low for your height” he grimaced. Rei’s heart leapt into her throat. “Your BMI clocks out at roughly 16.6 which would make you fairly underweight. For the sake of your health and that of the fetus, you should aim to gain between 28 and 40 pounds.”
Rei stiffened, gripping the arm rests of her chair. “Th-that’s a lot…” she croaked.
“So long as you eat healthy and take good care of yourself, it won’t be that difficult” Dr. Gon replied dismissively. “And speaking of food”—here, he slapped a pamphlet onto the desk in front of her— “here is a list of foods that you’re no longer allowed to eat now that you’re pregnant.”
Rei’s eyes widened, a small squeal rising up in her throat. Kakashi rested his hand atop hers in reassurance though he hated to admit that he, too, was growing overwhelmed with all of this new information. Rei skimmed through the pamphlet, eyes wide with awe and fear, as Dr. Gon began preparing more informational documents for them. Skating up the pamphlet’s pages were smiling cartoon depications of things like sunny-side up eggs and fish. The list of banned foods felt endless. Rei swallowed back her anxiety. “By these standards, you might as well just put me on a prisoner’s diet” she muttered.
“Well, raw and undercooked foods can put you at risk for salmonella and E. Coli and plenty of other bacterial diseases that could harm the baby” Dr. Gon explained. He slapped another stack of pamplets in front of her then, outlining vitamin supplements and fetal development and nursing and the process of labor and delivery.
By the time they left the hospital that day, Rei’s arms were full of supplies and her head was even fuller with anxiety. The prospect of everything involved in the coming months was dizzying. She hugged the pamphlets and brown paper bag to her chest and chewed the inside of her cheek. Their entire lives were truly about to change.
Kakashi helped her sort through all of their souvenirs on the kitchen table, separating the prenatal vitamins and anti-nausea pills from the paperwork and pamphlets. Sighing, Rei raked her fingers through her long bangs and murmured, “This is a lot.”
“It’s not that bad, though” Kakashi assured her. “Just things we’ll have to keep track of in the next few months.”
“I think I’m going to be sick” Rei spat, shoving herself away from the kitchen table. She rubbed her temples as she paced the living room, Toshio’s ears perking up at the sound of her panic.
“Do you want to try the medication?” Kakashi asked, picking up the little orange pill bottle. The small white tablets inside rattled in his hand.
“No, Kakashi, I do not want to try the medication” Rei said.
Frowning, Kakashi replied, “Are you sure? I mean, if they’ll help, I think you should—”
“Kakashi” Rei snapped. She looked at him and her eyes were stone-cold, like daggers. “I don’t need you pressuring me to take shit that I don’t want.” Regardless of whether the doctor prescribed them or not, she didn’t feel comfortable taking medication in her current state. What was it going to do her? To the baby? To her body? The suppression of her sickness almost felt like cheating anyway. To vomit was to be fully pregnant, wasn’t it? To expel everything in your stomach for the sake of the child? A sacrifice, even? Rei wrapped her arms around her waist, sucked in a sharp breath. Her fingers glided over the slightest imprint of her hipbone through her tunic.
A sigh broke past Kakashi’s unmasked lips as he tossed the pill bottle apathetically to the side. “I’m just trying to help” he murmured.
The disappointment in his face, the sourness of his tone, struck Rei with a pang of regret. She pressed her palm over her eyes, grunted. “I’m sorry, Kakashi” she whispered. “I’m just…really fucking stressed.” Her voice cracked here and for a moment, Kakashi swore she was going to cry. Carefully, hesitantly, he skirted around the kitchen table and pulled her into his arms.
“I know” he whispered, petting her hair. “We’ve had a big day. Hell, we’ve had a big week.”
“This is just a lot to take in” Rei croaked. She buried her face against his chest and Kakashi knew she was definitely crying. He hugged her a little tighter, planted a small kiss on the top of her head. “What are we going to do? I mean, how are we going to handle this? K-Kakashi, I’m so fucking scared.”
Kakashi took her chin between his thumb and forefinger, gently tilted her face up to meet his gaze. “Rei, look at me. Everything is going to be fine. I promise. We’ll figure it out. It’s you and me, together. I’m going to be right by your side the entire time.”
“B-but we don’t have time to figure it out! W-we need a plan! We need to be ten steps ahead of the game, we need—”
“We have time” Kakashi interrupted, not unkindly. “Listen, I think maybe we just need to take a step back and reevaluate. Take ourselves out of the situation and assess things before we figure out the next couple moves. And then, when it’s all said and done, we’ll come back stronger and better than ever.”
“Kakashi, what are you getting at?” Rei cocked a brow, leaning back in suspicion. She wiped her nose with the back of her hand, sniffled.
“I’m saying that maybe it would be a good idea for us to just go on a little vacation” Kakashi replied. “Just take it easy, catch our breath, refocus. Rei, I know this is a big deal. Having a baby is an overwhelming change. I feel it, too. But that’s why I think it’s so important that we do this while we can.”
Rei pouted, dropping her eyes to the floor in thought. “I-I don’t know…” she murmured. “I don’t think we can really afford to—”
“I have savings we can dip into if money is your concern” Kakashi replied.
“No, it’s not that” Rei countered. “I mean, time. We don’t have time to go on a vacation! Kakashi, we have shit to sort out.”
“Exactly” Kakashi replied. He cupped Rei’s cheek in his hand, grinned at her. “Just trust me on this. I promise it’ll be for the best.”
“I-I just…” Rei stammered, “I don’t even know if I have the energy to go on a trip. Why can’t I just lay around the house all day and do nothing?” She certainly didn’t feel like expending the extra energy on tourist traps.
“You can lay around on vacation” Kakashi argued. “I’m not expecting us to hit every tourist trap in the Land of Fire. I mean a relaxation vacation. A hot spring, a secluded inn, a trip to the beach. Someplace where no one will expect anything of us. Does that sound alright?” He prayed she would say yes.
Chewing her lower lip, Rei searched the floor as if the answer was in the groutlines or the fibers of the carpet. Toshio lumbered nearer, nudged her hand, looked up at her with his big brown eyes. “Can Toshio come, too?” Rei finally asked, quietly, meekly.
“Of course Toshio can come, too” Kakashi smiled. The dog, seemingly satisfied with this answer, barked in acceptance.
It really wasn’t ideal. She really didn’t have time for this. Did Kakashi genuinely expect her to laze around someplace far away when there was so much work to be done? And yet the tension in the back of her neck, the bloating in her stomach and the choppy sea of nausea in her chest, threatened to intervene either way. She thought of burn out, of pushing the envelope and the dangers within that. She couldn’t afford to risk endangering their child with her own overbearing stress, either. Pursing her lips, Rei gripped Kakashi’s shirt tightly and finally made her decision. “Alright” Rei sighed. “Alright, we can go on a trip.”
Kakashi grinned and kissed the tip of her nose triumphantly. “I’ll take care of everything, you won’t have to worry about a thing” he assured her. And really, deep down he knew that this would be best for her. She deserved to sit back and take a breath, not just because of her unexpected pregnancy but thanks to the unexpected month they had had in general. Rei was a hard worker, she was dedicated and strong, but you can only be strong for so long before you need respite. And that was just what Rei needed: a respite. If Kakashi had the means to give that to her, then god dammit, he was going to, no matter what. No one deserved this more than her.
As he prepared dinner for them that evening, Kakashi glanced at Rei on the couch over his shoulder. Curled up in her favorite blanket, she stared wistfully at the little ultrasound picture they had been sent home with. She traced the outline of her uterus with her index finger, measured the size of the baby with the tip of her pinky. A small, soft smile touched her lips. There was so much ahead of them, daunting and unfamiliar territory, but it would all be worth it, wouldn’t it? For their child, for the little life inside of her, it would be worth it.

Chapter 1
Bracca!
GL-2577 woke in a cold sweat. She had been dreaming of a woman’s voice, that same woman’s voice calling the same name. It belonged to her, somehow, though she did not remember the child that it had belonged to.
The lights flickered on in the barracks, signaling the next shift of troopers to wake and there was a collective noise of sudden movement. In space there was neither night nor day, merely a cycle of ever wakeful stormtroopers and officers. As one shift looked forward to their scheduled sleep period, another woke to replace them. The Supremacy was GL-2577’s first large cruiser assignment; it seemed that time did not exist here, days stretching endlessly without number. Space, to her, was the perfect emptiness, sanitary and gleaming, monochromatic and precise. She unbraided her dark hair, mussed from sleep, and braided it once more into order; she forwent her usual white gear in favor of her starched grey officer’s uniform, and marched, black booted, to breakfast. Always on time, always prepared. Academy trained and battled hardened, she was the elite amongst her comrades. Tireless and ruthless, she had risen quickly through the ranks since her days in the academy, and she was the perfect soldier.
Except that she was not. Sleep and times like meals were the very few moments when the troops were allowed to remove their helmets, placing them on the tables for easy reaching; all around her was a myriad of faces all too human. Dark rings under her eyes told the story of her restless sleep; they were neither dark nor light eyes, a honeyed in between that could have almost been soft had steel not been required of them. Her jawline was straight and firm, lips straight and unsmiling. As much as she preferred the Supremacy to planetside duty, this was a new assignment with a new squadron, and she would not undermine her new position as a lieutenant by making the troops think she could be joked with. Compared to others it was a cushy assignment and exactly what she had been striving for and nothing was going to mess it up. As an officer she was the hand of Supreme Leader Snoke, but it had taken her no small amount of intelligence to get her where she was so young; she knew who she really worked for. General Hux was also not a subtle man, and nor were his methods. She had not been expressly commanded to report on Supreme Leader Snoke’s apprentice, but it was clear that General Hux did not appreciate the instability of his grip on second in command with this newcomer in play. The official word on her squadron was that it was the apprentice’s to command, but it felt too generous of a gift for a man of General Hux’s temperament. Not when this apprentice had knights to command. No, Hux had other intentions. This apprentice had yet to arrive on The Supremacy; GL-2577 did not know what to think of him or how her position could be compromised by taking it. Or how to work this feud to her favor. She had not worked her way this far to escape becoming energy canon fodder only to be collateral damage between two powers greater than her. If she could work the situation to her advantage she would.
She finished breakfast in silence, making sure that each one of her troops was polished and in line for his ship’s arrival. Her squadron was not the only one present, nor was she the only officer, but it was a small affair. Hux was not there, but Captain Phasma was. Captain Phasma was all that GL-2577 wished to achieve. Within the next few years. She was tough impenetrable and cold, but she still had her boots on the ground, and that was not GL-2577’s ultimate destination. Still, she had nothing but respect for Captain Phasma as her superior officer and as a soldier.
The ship was not on time. When it arrived GL-2577 did not shift a muscle except for the one that twitched in her jaw as the jets whined into silence, the hiss of the door’s seal gasping for the air inside the hangar. Troops marched out ahead, but it was the impossibly tall cloaked figure that she fixated on. This tall creature that came swirling from the gasses of the ship, he was what? A fallen Jedi, she had heard. She had heard some things about his temper as well, but nothing beyond a rumor, a passing whisper. Whispers that made her uneasy about her position on this ship, taking it as possibly the next brutal challenge to her leadership. But one that she would survive like all the others. He swept through them like a cat, and as he approached she clicked her heels smartly, nodding in place of a full salute.
“Sir! For your inspection. I am your lieutenant, and these are the troops at your personal disposal here on the Supremacy.”
He halted his pace in front of her but did not fully turn; Despite the full helmet mask he wore she could tell that she was indeed being inspected so she kept her eyes front and dead center. When he spoke it was a rumbling, mechanical rasp befitting his reputation.
“You can tell General Hux that a personal guard won’t be necessary while I’m aboard.” He said. It was the grate of a broken monster. She inclined her head in an obedient nod once more, knowing that this message was to be her first report to the general. “I wish to retire. Show me to my quarters.”
It was waking hours for her and those under her command, but his last station had been planetside so she assumed even the Supreme Leader’s apprentice needed to sleep. She motioned for her troops to move out and the clomp of boots headed in the opposite direction that she took him.
“Follow me.”
As they walked, she all starched lines and he flowing cloak, their boots the only similarity- black and heavy- she wondered how much of rumor was true. Was he truly a ruthless enforcer of the Supreme Leader’s will, a right hand attack dog who could sense your every thought, smell your every lie and worm out your sins using the force? Was he scarred under that mask? Was it a face that inspired fear as his voice was so clearly meant to do? His quarters were deep and quiet, dark. She suspected that one of the many sleekly outfitted doors was not a cabinet and actually an en suite fresher; the higher officer’s quarters came with them. Water, even, not sonic. She had halted at the door and meant to await his order to leave, expecting it to follow quickly, but as her eyes slid from that inner door to her momentary charge, she assumed that she was no longer welcome as he had begun to remove his mask. Curiosity dragged her feet a microsecond more than they should have and she was caught staring for what had unfolded was entirely unexpected.
He was a young man- not much from her own age- with a head of rich, dark curls and a long, sorrowful face peppered as if by accident with moles that made him look even younger. He contemplated the mask for a moment as if expecting privacy now that he was secluded, forgetting the nameless lieutenant that he cared nothing for. His eyes simmered in the half light, so dark, so unfathomable. And when he opened those unexpected lips, the sound that came out was so low, so soft, that it almost lost its command to her.
“Leave.”
Promptly, she did, her stomach quivering. This was the famed and feared apprentice? Exactly what was this man?
