pre-recession, post-taste
Hello, everyone. I hope this blog can bring some well-needed laughs in really trying times. That's why I've gone back into the archives of that precipitous year 2007, a year where the McMansion was sleepwalking into being a symbol of the financial calamity to follow. We return to the Chicago suburbs once more because they remain the highest concentration of houses in their original conditions. Thanks to our flipping predilection, these houses become rarer and rarer and I have to admit even I have developed a fondness for them as a result.
Tumblr media
Our present house is ostensibly "French Provincial" in style, which is McMansion for "Chateaux designed by Carmela Soprano". It boasts 7 bedrooms, 8.5 bathrooms, and comes in at a completely reasonable 15,000 square feet. It can be yours for an equally reasonable $1.5 million.
Tumblr media
Every 2007 McMansion needed two things: a plethora of sitting rooms and those dark wood floors. This house actually has around five or six sitting rooms (depending if you count the tiled sunroom) but for brevity's sake, I'll only provide two of them.
Tumblr media
With regards to the second sitting room, I'm really not one to talk statuary here because beside me there is a bust of Dante where the sculptor made him look simultaneously sickly and lowkey hot.
Tumblr media
Technically, if we are devising a dichotomy between sitting and not sitting (yes, I know about the song), the dining room also counts as a sitting room. The more chairs in your McMansion dining room, the more people allegedly like you enough to travel 2.5 hours in traffic to see you twice a year.
Tumblr media
Here's the thing about nostalgia: the world as we knew it then is never coming back. In some ways this is sad (kitchens are entirely white now and marble countertops will look terrible in about 3 years) but in other ways this is very good (guys in manhattan have switched to private equity instead of betting the farm on credit default swaps made from junk mortgages proffered to America's most vulnerable and exploited populations.) Progress!
Tumblr media
Okay I really don't understand the 50 bed pillows thing. Every night my parents tossed their gazillion decorative pillows on the floor just to put them back on the bed the next morning. Like, for WHAT? Who was going in there? The Pope?
Tumblr media
Here's a fun one for your liminal spaces moodboards. (Speaking for myself.)
Tumblr media
Yes, I know about skibidi toilet. And sticking out your gyatt for the rizzler. I wish I didn't. I wish I couldn't read. Literacy is like a mirror in which I only see the aging contours of my face.
Tumblr media
When your kids move out every room becomes a guest room.
Anyway, let's see what the rear of this house has to offer.
Tumblr media
The migratory birds will not forgive them for their crimes. But also seriously, not even a garden?
Anyway, that does it for this round of McMansion Hell. Happy Halloween!

STEAMROLLS IN. dust clears and everytjing is perfectly fine except for me who has been steamrolled. mineru or purah hcs……,,,
Tumblr media
HEHEHEH. HEH
WEL. I will be doing purah since I haven't thought about mineru too much yet I just think she's neat
so. in general I think purah is a bit of an oddball, not just in how she dresses but also how she behaves and her opinions on a lot of things. she's brutally honest which is a characteristic she shares with impa, except uh. well impa basically only became that brutally honest in her old age and more or less held her tongue to an extent when she was younger. this isn't completely why I headcanon that purah is autistic (I just like headcanoning characters as nd because it's relatable to me sometimes) but it is part of the reason lmao
her and robbie are childhood friends! they latched onto each other when they were like. eight. and they still keep in pretty close contact in botw! robbie and purah have pretty much always understood their relationship to be completely platonic though they have been teased/questioned about it only for them to look confused and go "um no we are besties what are you talking about "
speaking of that. we're going to go into "stuff i just made up and have no evidence for" territory. but I like to think that even before the whole prophecy thing started and the divine beasts and guardians were excavated purah had a rudimentary understanding of ancient sheikah tech from poking around where she shouldn't have and experimenting. i really don't think the sheikah tribe a century ago had any interest in it for the most part. in fact i think they kinda. discouraged it. heavily. they still know the legends, and before the yiga clan emerges they were basically a boogeyman for young children—an almost comically exaggerated evil (and they turned out to be that way lmao.) so purah got a lot of "you're going to become like the yiga clan if you don't quit messing around with things you shouldn't!" when she was younger and robbie got punished along with her as sort of an accomplice/enabler lmao. they were not well liked and often kept to themselves.
yeah then the whole "the thing you need lies buried underground" or whatever happened. suddenly purah isn't the Freak Child Who Must be Punished but basically a prodigy and their only hope and incredible and stuff. this told purah and robbie one thing primarily: none of this praise could be trusted. the moment the tech stopped being relevant they would be discarded again, so they had to do everything in their power to stay useful and relevant. the guardians and divine beasts becoming corrupted was a huge blow to them both, especially robbie. also yeah the general consensus amongst the tribe after the calamity was that sheikah tech sucked now and though they didn't...prevent people from messing around with it it's still frowned upon to this day. that's kind of why symin never went back lmao. both he and purah do visit from time to time but mostly just to see their families.
speaking of family. purah adores her grand-niece. paya calls her auntie purah! purah's somewhat closed off about this. also she's worried about paya taking impa's place as chieftain because of what a doormat she is. she doesn't think impa prepared her very well and probably thinks cado or dorian should become chieftain instead lmao. (if we're going to talk abt totk, i think purah got really pissed at impa for just running off and leaving kakariko to get crushed by falling ruins and giving up all her responsibility to paya like seriously wtf. impa. one of your closest advisors/guards got their house crushed by a fancy rock and of course those dipshit hylian researchers aren't helping paya doesn't know what to do go back and HELP FIX IT. AAAAAAAAA)
hopefully i won't get more insatiably pissed about totk on main. but oh girl purah is not happy during the events of that game. hiding eyebags with makeup kinda unhappy. though i also think she has a horrible sleep schedule in general. i just dont really think she has any reason to be i mean yeah she managed to scrounge up what was left of her life's work even though most of it vanished without an explanation. so again she tries to stay relevant by helping develop the towers and the purah pad (minimally.) she's spearheading the development of a new town that I'm assuming will probably make an effort to restore castle town when it gets bigger. she is desperate for something to do, some way to be beautiful and useful and cool again, but she gets this looming feeling in the back of her head that none of it will last, and she fears for herself and her tribe, hoping to appeal to hylians and princess zelda as much as possible to avoid disaster.
did i mention i think she's very particular about her appearance? cause she is. she masks a LOT, and she does not like looking bad or foolish or weak to anyone. I mean she is fine with being weird, likes pushing that boundary to see what's palatable for other people, and tries to befriend and protect people who she thinks might be ostracized, but again, she fears not being palatable. she doesn't want to be bullied or shunned, and she wants to look like nothing affects her.
i also think she understates how much she and impa didn't get along as kids. they do generally get along better now, but they try not to step on each other's toes and they've tried to be there for each other during hard times. they love each other very much but yeah they do not touch...sensitive issues
her and josha have sort of a child and her weird aunt thing going on. josha just kinda latched onto purah randomly at some point purah was like "oh no" internally but befriended josha and yeah
she's not completely agnostic but she's about as close as you can get. does not care about religion and does what she does because she cares about other people
oh also she's a lesbian

The weak point smash attacks in Age of Calamity are cool enough, but I wish the camera didn't lock the way it does during the animation, because it means we miss seeing details like this:
The Blademasters wave to Kohga after they toss him, which you don't see unless the camera gets stuck at a different angle. Like, that's a fun detail! Why would you hide it where we can't see it?

Good news! I'm slowly becoming a fan of the Metroid series. This started shortly after I was exposed to the idea that Samus and Pikachu are pals ever since she rescued him in Smash Bros Brawl in the Subspace Emissary story. Which I know isn't part of the Metroid lore, obviously, but it did make me appreciate Samus as a character.
She is an ice-cold, unflinching badass in her games (which I need to finish playing still, so no spoilers) and relies on no one but herself. That said, I love the idea that she has a soft spot for this fuzzy yellow critter with the world's worse case of static. She saw he was in trouble, broke him out with no hesitation because it was the right thing to do and now they're inseparable.
And I know that has nothing to do with Metroid proper, but like I said, it makes me appreciate Samus that much more. That's the power of fanfic, baby.

Perhaps a spicy take:
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity did more to make Hyrule feel like a populated, living world to me than many of the mainline games.
I'm serious. This version of Hyrule feels like it's full of people, and as you play, you really get a sense that you're helping them out. See, to earn things like health bonuses and attack combos, you have to complete these little text-only quests. On every level where you actually fight enemies, you earn materials, and different quests require specific materials for completion. And all these quests have a little blurb about a task that needs to be done that requires the materials you provide. When you complete the quest, there's another blurb talking about how you helped the people out.

Random BOTW headcanon:
Master Kohga faked his death in his fight with Link so he could go back to his nap.
He's not incompetent by any means and is in fact a skilled and powerful warrior. The fight was a sham to get the Thunder Helm out of the hideout so the Gerudo would stop raiding it. His lackeys stole it because it's treasure, but he obviously couldn't just say, "Take it back, you're making it worse around here." After his 'defeat', the rest of the Yiga played along, accusing Link of murder and making their attacks more personal.
In conclusion, Master Kohga is actually very intelligent and despite being the leader of a cult of personality, he watches out for the clan and acts in their best interest at all times.

Operation: Out of Order (CONTENT WARNING: VIOLENCE)- A surprise attack during a mission sends Phoenix and Handler reeling.
The Spy or The Liar? - Phoenix finds someone in the woods. Things get...interesting.

I EXPECT YOU TO DIE - OTHER
where you go, i'm going (there is no me without you) - Agent Phoenix is MIA, and Delilah Elwood has to pick up the pieces her sibling left behind.
To her, the legendary Phoenix was Frankie, her older sibling that never left her side, plain and simple. But after the Peacemaker incident, she and her mother are barely allowed to speak about them.
When Delilah is cleaning out Frankie’s apartment, she runs into Director Simmons, Frankie’s resentful old boss. Simmons has heard very positive things about Delilah. She wishes to hire her to the Enhanced Operatives Division, & Delilah jumps at the opportunity.
With the new job comes secrets, allies, and the discovery that Frankie may not be dead after all. Now, with the help of Frankie’s old handler, Delilah is left with only one option: take her sibling’s place and rescue them. But Zoraxis is a beast that is not so easily satiated, and The Doctor has a new target on Delilah’s head…
I EXPECT YOU TO DIE x RIDE THE CYCLONE
No Soul, No Name - Jane feels lost. Mason helps.
URINETOWN
welcome to my life (it plays out just like a true crime) (CONTENT WARNING: GORE)- But it was impossible. Barrel had to keep reminding himself it wasn’t him. It. Was. Impossible. There was no way he was seeing the boy he’d sent to Urinetown not even two hours ago.
Or: Bobby haunts the narrative, both figuratively and literally. It doesn't end well for Barrel.
BENDY
kicking, screaming, sinking slowly - What I think the first "incident" in the Ink Fumes AU would be like. Wally suffers a bit :(
ZELDA
Wandering No More: The Great Calamity, As Told By Kali Taamu - Recently, the diary of Kali Taamu, a citizen of Hyrule during The Great Calamity and my late grandmother, was found. This diary shows a first-person perspective, fresh and not foggy with age, of the tragedy. This is that account.
PAPER MARIO
Refolded: The Beginning - We all know the story by now. Two siblings, torn apart by the actions of their father. In a rage, one swore to reinvent the world, while the other opposed her twin and helped to save it. Both died. Olivia and Olly. The Origami siblings.
But what if.....What if the craftsman hadn't been so foolish? What if he didn't write his message? What if Olly hadn't become King Olly, the Origami Overlord? What if he'd stayed as just Olly? What if the origami festival had gone on? But what if, somehow, things had still gone wrong? This is that story.
Refolded: Whispering Woods - The aftermath of the attack. Nobody has a good time.
Refolded: The Soul Seed - Olly gets jumpscared and does a favor.
SONIC x FNAF
Keep Moving - As Miles reached the end of the vent, he dropped down onto a conveniently placed mat in the main hallway of Superstar Row. As he looked around at the various objects on display while making his way toward Sonic's green room, an automated voice played over the PA system.
"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for visiting, and we hope you enjoyed! Sonic and the rest of the Glamrock Gang are pretty tired, but they'll be back again soon! Please make your way to the exit, and make sure you have all your belongings and your entire party with you." Then, in a very speedy tone, "16-Bit Entertainment is not responsible for stolen private property."
BENDY - OC x CANON
did you quake when you saw what's really at play? - Old memories don't often stay buried forever. Or: Or: The Dark Revival trailer grabbed me by the throat and demanded I make content for my years-old AU. This was the result.
SLY COOPER
sly cooper if it was a movie because hollywood is a bunch of cowards - Let's revisit Sly's origin story, shall we? Or: What I think would be the prologue/opening of a Sly Cooper movie; a retelling of the flashback cutscene of Sly 1. Written in screenplay/script format.

uh oh oops i forgot i had sent those asks to you, the anime and zelda one!
oh my god yes!! i loved those too! the humour in saiki is priceless. i do gotta say, with haikyuu now nearing the end, im kind of sad we're not getting a full season of it instead of, what was it again, like 2 films?
thats cool!! have you ever played any other zelda game?
you are very welcome and thank you for answering. i hope you had a good weekend!
saiki k is the best, it made me laugh so hard when i first watched it
ah yeah, the end of haikyuu. makes me wanna cry. i don't want it to end, but i'm also glad theyre finishing the show!! though not sure how to feel about the 2 movies thing they're doing
the manga is super good, so at least if they manage to fuck up the last of the story we still have the manga to fall on
ah zelda games! when i was six i started playing twilight princess (never finished it, i mean i was only six and twilight princess is a challenging game!) and i would play up to the part where you become a wolf and raid the village, and then i would get bored and start the game over again. i liked playing as a "big puppy" and being a farmer. but i didn't really progress until i was a lot older
when i was 10 i tried out breath of the wild (my brother got it for chirstmas and i thought it looked fun) and i left the shrine of resurrection and went down the hill. i talked to the old man, and after that the voice told me to activate the tower. i started down the hill again and ran into a bokoblin. i got scared and turned off the wii u (yes the wii u, shut up) and didnt touch breath of the wild for a year.
eventually when i was eleven, my little sister (who was 7) was like "i wanna play breath of the wild" and she finished the great plateau after a few days. i realized i couldn't let my younger sister best me, so i took it up again and got over my fears of bokoblins. me and my younger sister took turns on the wii u and progressed through the game at around the same pace and helped each other through it. we finally beat it when i was twelve and she was eight.
i really enjoyed breath of the wild and started it all over again (because it had taken me so long to be it) and i enjoyed it like it was the first time again, due to my general forgetfulness.
a little over three years ago i picked up twilight princess again. (i had recently read the manga that was out and thought it looked fun) i beat breath of the wild, this one is probably easy i remembered thinking. it was not. i ate my words. this game took me something like 80 hours one way through. and i had to look up tutorials. it was really fun and had a lot of story and i really enjoyed it, but it was kinda a big switch from breath of the wild. a lot of dungeons and the fact that it was really linear kinda messed with me at first.
two birthdays ago i got skyward sword, and with both an open world and linear zelda game under my belt i felt pretty good, and i beat it in 40 hours or so. i really enjoyed that one and boy the story was just so,,,, hhhhhh i loved it
honestly i think its my favorite zelda game. and fyi, i played it on the wii with the wii remote motion controls. it was hard to get the hang of but i eventually got it. the story is very well done and zelda and link's dynamic is 1000000000/10 i love it
last year i played age of calamity and while it was really good, i didn't like what they did with it. overall meh for what i wanted but a good game for what it is. i main as link because that's how every other zelda game goes and i like it that way.
ive started wind waker, link's awakening and a link to the past, but have yet to finish any of them. i think i'll be starting wind waker over again because it's been a bit!!
i want more games under my belt, but right now i'm replaying skyward sword because like i said it's my favorite zelda game.
sorry this was so long but i had a lot to say!!
thanks for the ask and i hope your weekend was amazing!!

RECENT CHAPTER MANGA SPOILERS !!
working theories and questions on Bram's ability because I think we're over-estimating it (sorry bram I love you)
DISCLAIMER!! -I did research on this but some things may be incorrect because I didn't bother to go back and read the whole arc over again
topics covered (they are marked so you can scroll down and skip a section but you'll probably get the whole picture if you read it all):
theories on Bram's ability
are the effects permanent
can dazai nullify them
how does Fukuchi/fyodor control the vampires (blackmail..??)
raise the dead???
is bram like Lovecraft? (not an ability user at all?)
"deaths" and casualties
Akutagawa's death (mainly timing and possibilities)
Jouno's death and how it differs with Aku's
Chuuya and how he could've been infected
Tumblr media
theories on bram’s ability
okay, so I saw someone mention that people are being dramatic because when has someone with high importance ever died in BSD? and although I don't agree that we should rely on that fact to say that all the characters that "died" aren't dead, a lot of the people think that the characters that are now vampires, are a lost cause and I don't think that's the case (maybe I'm hanging to a sliver of hope idk humour me)
if we say that all the characters that where met with Bram's ability are truly dead, this is the list of dead characters we would have currently by the end of the arc:
Chuuya nakahara
Ryūnosuke Akutagawa
ichiyo higuchi
Truro hirotsu
gin Akutagawa
Michizō tachihara (not Bram's ability but still)
saigiku jono (not Bram's ability but still)
countless innocent citizens
and possibly more PM members we don't know about (like kouyu, Q, etc)
now I don't know about you but a lot of these characters seem pretty significant to me, not to mention some of the missing characters. now, my weak belief is that Bram's ability is like any other ability and dazai can nullify it.
if the effects were permanent then that would be granting bram such a significantly powerful ability, not to mention he can also somehow raise people from the dead to become vampires under his command AND the vampires have their abilities if they had any. which again is so formidable I don't think Asagiri would give one character THAT much power. like he can raise the dead AND control them so it’s like much more than it would be if all he could do was just raise the dead but no he can also control them.
even if bram wasn't a hybrid-type creature like Lovecraft he is still very powerful. the BSD fandom website says that Bram's ability is know to the governments of the world and that he's even one of the "Top Ten Calamities to Destroy the World" which means that the government was aware of bram even before the DoA arc which could be highly possible because my guess is that Fukuchi captured bram and is blackmailing him.
its also obvious that Bram's ability is infectious and spreads quickly. so if the government was aware of Bram and his ability then this type of thing has to have happened before, because bram has apparently lived for decades maybe even centuries so it could've been before the ADA was even formed. and with such a quick rate of infection to his ability they must have had to do something to cancel Bram's ability. and I know what some of you are thinking, the government could've just killed off the vampires really quickly, what if bram is like Lovecraft and not an "ability user" dazai can nullify (I would like to say that I think this is also quite possible because bram is a vampire and hasn't died like a normal human being with the circumstance of old age as far as we know but I can't quite pinpoint it but I don't think this is the case) , what if bram has to order his vampires to bite other people instead of it being the first instinct once you're bitten, and yeah I've thought of those theories too (I've been thinking about this for an embarrassingly long amount of time), and they are valid points but I don't think they're very likely or you wouldn't be reading this post right now.
so if bram is just like any other ability user, then dazai would touch Chuuya and boom he's back to normal!,,,, is my hope. I really don't know much about the workings on Nikolai's game and what Fyodor and dazai plan to do with their game partners, but I do know that Fyodor is on the same level, more or less, with dazai intellectually so if this were the case then he would do his best to keep Chuuya out of Dazai's reach. which comes to my next point, how is Fyodor controlling Chuuya? for all we know bram is the only one who can control his vampires (as the BSD fandom website says) but we see in multiple cases where the vampires are listening to others commands without bram present and active in the situation, like when Fukuchi is with his army in the airport, when Fukuchi orders vampire Akutagawa to take dying Jono away, when Fyodor is, apparently, controlling Chuuya's whereabouts. that means that bram also has the ability to pass the role of commanding to someone else, or multiple people, and that role won't come back to him (...?). because even in the recent chapters, Aya and bram are being chased by vampires so why wouldn't bram just make them stop? he seems to have a sort of friendship with Aya and all he wants in my opinion is to be done with this BS and go to sleep for a few centuries so why wouldn't he make it easier for himself and Aya to get away? its either that or the DoA members are communicating with each other in an unknown way and bram is being forced to listen to all the commands and command his vampires to do as the DoA say, but then Fukuchi could just ask him where he went when he went missing and why would bram not answer? he and Aya didn't have a connection when she just took off with his body.
so my thoughts are that if bram is like any other ability user, dazai can either nullify his entire vampire army by touching bram or in Chuuya's case he'll just touch one of the vampires and the one touched is the only one that will become normal again as long as the vampire wasn't dead before being bitten, otherwise I don't think that'll bring back the person.
"deaths" and casualties
I know what I said about the "deaths" above. I know I said that it would be a lot of significant people if they all did happen to be dead. but I honestly do think that Akutagawa is dead, and its taken me quite a while to just, accept it as an aku fan. there is honestly just no way that he could've been alive by the time bram bit him. because think about it logically, he's still human after all. there were many events going on from the time he was slashed to the time he was bitten, people found him dead in front of Fukuchi, Fukuchi moved him and had to convince bram to bite him. it wasn't as if he was bitten right after he was slashed and although his head wasn't clean off I don't think there's much of a chance that he could've still been alive by the time he got bit.
so if dazai were to nullify all the vampires, Akutagawa would just turn out to be a corpse is my best guess about what's gonna happen
on the other hand jouno's death is different in my eyes, because remember he wasn't bit and turned into a vampire from what we know. Fukuchi pretty much killed him and ordered vampire Akutagawa to take him away. my guess of what Fukuchi plans to do is not to turn Jouno into a vampire but to let him die off somewhere so that the other hunting dogs can't find him. this is because Fukuchi knows jouno's strengths and just exactly what he's capable of, and what he's not capable of, if he were turned into a vampire and was somehow turned back into human, Jouno would be an incredibly strong enemy for Fukuchi to have, since he now knows that Fukuchi is the leader of the DoA, and that he has/had bram under his control. plus even if he did turn him into a vampire after he died it would seem incredibly suspicious because Jouno has extremely inhuman abilities aside from his main ability, if the hunting dogs found out, or even someone in the government etc, they would think that someone very powerful would've killed him and they might suspect Fukuchi. whereas Akutagawa is already dead and his ability is also incredibly strong and useful, but there's quite a bit of disconnect from him and Fukuchi relationship wise.
but yeah I do think that both of them will be dead by the end of the arc which is really disappointing because they're both one of my favourites lol
now lets talk about our favourite ginger
see, I find it SO unbelievable that Chuuya was just,,, bitten like that. like stop thinking about Chuuya being a vampire for a second with me okay? and think about Chuuya instead. what do we know about Chuuya? he's quite literally a god. what do we know about Chuuya in battle? yeah, think about the man that LITERALLY stared at the face of his OWN terrifying ability and said "you know when its time to give up and go home? the time is never". tell me about the Chuuya that uses corruption when necessary in battle even though his only liability is dazai and he could kill himself in the process yet he still does it because its important. if you think for a second that Chuuya could be stopped by a couple of vampires, you are mistaken my friend. so here are the few ideas I have on how he got bit:
he didn't and its all a disguise as part of Dazai's plan (but that would be underestimating Fyodor and I do adore Fyodor so this is really a big IF)
he did get bit but its all a part of Dazai's plan
he was blacked out drunk and vamp aku just strolled over and took a bite (or he got captured idk)
mori (I only added him because I respect his gray area and his intellectual capabilities)
because no matter how many vampires there could've been, if Chuuya was right minded and conscious there is absolutely no way they could've even gotten a chance to put their hands on him, even with their abilities.
and Mori's just on the list because even though he's an absolute asshole-jerk-lowkey pedophilic piece of shit, he's a smart and logical absolute asshole-jerk-lowkey pedophilic piece of shit. the only thing I respect about mori is his intellectual ability to set aside his duties as a mafia boss and help the city and the people in it for the better good when the situations are dire, unlike the old mafia boss. so he could've had a hand in this like he did with Tachihara, but Tachihara did end up being dead by the end of it all so if this is the case, Chuuya's future isn't looking so bright.
so yeah, that's it for now. if you've come this far literally really appreciate it, I find it so hard that people actually like reading my thoughts since they're almost always shower thoughts that keep me up at night but I hope you enjoyed!
drink water and take care of yourself <3

Trauma...
We live in a world where everyone is clawing, scratching and victimizing others without fully understanding what is going on... To make sense of it mainly begins in a honest pursuit of self discovery. Talking about that discovery is both a privilege and a serious responsibility. It is also a bold move. To live free, we must learn how to strengthen, maintain, and even rebuild our life if necessary. Personal resiliency or living free requires humility, Transparency, purpose and relationships who you are is not a Label !!!
Trauma affects everyone is society. Research by the centers for disease control and Prevention has shown that one in five Americans was sexually molested as a child; One in four was beaten by a parent to the point of a mark being left on their body; and one in three couples engages in physical violence. A quarter of us grew up with alcoholic relatives, and one out of eight witnessed their mother being beaten or hot (American Journal Of Preventive Medicine 14, No.4 (1998) pg 245-58)
I personally identify with four of those five categories. New York Psychologists Chaim Shatan and Robert J. Lifton, and a group of Vietnam veterans in 1980 Successfully lobbied the American Psychiatric Association to create a new diagnosis: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which described a cluster of symptoms that was common, to a greater or lesser extent, to all of our veterans. Systematically identifying the symptoms and grouping them to gather into a disorder finally gave a name to the suffering of people who were overwhelmed by horror and helplessness.
But what about people like me, born during a time where it was unheard of to discuss such things? As we now know, was is not the only calamity that leaves human lives in ruins. While about a quarter of the soldiers who serve in war zones are expected to develop serious posttraumatic problems, the majority of Americans experiences a violent crime at some time during their lives, and more accurate reporting has revealed that twelve million women in the United States has been victims of rape. More than half of all rapes occurs in girls below age fifteen. For many people the war begins at home. Each year about three millions children in the United States are reported as victims of child abuse and neglect. One million of these cases are serious and credible enough to force local child protective services or the Courts to take actions. In other words, for every Soldier who serves in a War zone abroad, there are ten (10) children who are endangered in their own homes !!!
Without honestly confronting these destructive behavior patterns, the victims often becomes the victimizers. As human beings we belong to an extremely resilient species. Throughout human existence we have rebounded from out relentless wars, countless disasters (both natural and man-made). and the violence and betrayal in our own lines. But traumatic experiences do leave traces, whether on a larger scale (on our histories and cultures) or close to home, on our families, with dark secrets being imperceptibly passed down through generations. They also leave traces on our minds and emotions, On our capacity for hot and intimacy, and even on our biology and immune systems. Ten years ago when I first decided to honestly do the hard work of self-discovery I didn't know I would recover the hidden jewels of inner peace and tranquility. All I knew was sitting across from me, with a fine inch Plexiglas divider separating us, was the very woman I had spent my adult life failing time and time again. There she was holding our baby girl of only two weeks old, and here I was again, victimizing them and others mainly because I didn't know how to handle trauma. When that woman (MY BABYDOLL) said to me, "James you have never chosen us, you have always chosen them ------ in the streets". T.E.A.R.S. was born !!!
Trauma, whether it is the result of something done to you or something you yourself have done, almost always makes it difficult to engage in intimate relationships. After you have experienced something so unspeakable, how do you learn to trust yourself or anyone else again? Or, conversely, how can you surrender to an intimate relationship after you have been brutally violated?
It takes enormous trust and courage to allow yourself to remember. One of the hardest things for traumatized people is to confront their shame about the way they behaved during a traumatic episode, whether it is objectively warranted (as in the commission of atrocities) or not (as in the case of a child who tries to placate her abuser).
Deep down many traumatized people are even more haunted by the shame they feel about what they themselves did or did not do under the circumstances. They despise themselves for how terrified, dependent, excited, or enraged they felt.
Most child abuse victims suffer from agonizing shame about the actions they took to survive and maintain a connections with the person who abused them. This is particularly trust if the abuser was someone close to the child, someone the child depended on, as is so often the case, The result can be confusion about whether one was a victims or a willing participant, which in turn leads to bewilderment about the difference between love and terror; pain and pleasure...
"I think this man is suffering from memories". Sigmund Freud on Trauma 1895
Traumatized people have a tendency to super impose their trauma on everything around them and have trouble deciphering whatever is going on around them. Trauma also affects the imaginations...Imaginations is absolutely critical to the quality of our lives. Our imaginations enables us to leave our routine everyday existence by fantasizing about travel, food, sex, falling in love, or having the last word-all the things that make life interesting. Imagination gives us the opportunity to envision new possibilities-it is an essential launch pad for making our boredom, alleviates our pain, enhances our pleasure, and enriches our most intimate relationships. When people are compulsively and constantly pulled back into the past, to the last time they felt intense involvement and deep emotions, they suffer from a failure of imagination, a loss of the mental flexibility. Without imagination there is No hope, co chance to envision a better future No place to go, No personal reach...
T.E.A.R.S. is much more than ac acronym, it is the honest result of a life that have overcome the terrible effects of a traumatized life without dependency or mind altering drugs. In 2012 the public spent $1,526,228,000 on Abilify, more than on any other medication, Number three was Cymbalta, an antidepressant that sold well over a billion dollars worth of pills. (Wikipedia list of largest selling Pharmaceutical products). There are ways to truly heal from trauma and restore your autonomy. Being a patient rather than a participant in one's healing process, separates suffering people from their community and alienates them from an inner sense of self. There really is a natural way to deal with trauma. Looking through the fog to see your identity and value is worth the journey. I share with people all the time that there is a big difference between examples and excuses. Examples liberate you, While excuses Imprison you!!!
Thank you, J.P.
