literally nobody asked for this, but if i’m not bringing half-baked daemon aus to every fandom i’m vaguely in, literally what is the point of me
things to keep in mind:
I literally have the daemon forum open in another tab. this is essentially stream of consciousness. virginia woolf who?
mostly based on livesies if only because that’s the one i’ve seen the most, but there’s some touches of 92sies (aka Sarah Jacobs is here because I love her and it’s pride month, this is my lesbian agenda)
Literally only two characters have canon ages (Jack at 17 and Les at 9). The actors in livesies are obviously a lot older than the actors in 92sies so i’m kinda like. averaging the ages out lmao
that being said, a lot of the kids’ daemons wouldn’t be settled so i think this will just focus on the ones whose would be
also i don’t know the name of all the newsies i didnt get sucked TOO deep into the fandom in 2012 or 2017, so i’m playing catch up like a full decade later, pls be gentle with me
OH ALSO probably no daemon names bc i tend to put a fair amount of research into the names and i don’t have the brain cells for that right now lol
ANYWAY
JACK -- francis “jack kelly” sullivan. loyal, warm, welcoming, protective, friendly, flirty, desperately wants to be selfish but knows in his heart of hearts he can’t. street smart but maybe not too book smart. clever, quick thinker, dreamer (”i can’t spend my whole life dreaming/even thought that’s all i seem inclined to do”)
His daemon’s a blue jay, for sure. look at those core traits:
socially flexible extrovert -- out going, loyal to his boys but still open to new friendships/connections (he looked at davey and went “oh im gonna be his best friend.” was ready and willing to work with the other boroughs during the strike. the charismatic leader who makes everyone feel welcome and listened to
aggressive/confrontational -- my man started a strike. duh.
bold/adventurous -- his whole santa fe thing, wants to DO THINGS. i had more words to say here but they have abandoned me.
resourceful/innovative -- decided to start a strike after, like, 10 seconds of thinking. after flirting with katherine, his whole “today we stopped the scabbers, tomorrow we stop the wagons” speech (i definitely misremembered the first half). though he Does have to be bullied into it, he does know each step the strike needs to take, and knows how to do it even after plan a fails. the whole once and for all/using pulitzer’s own fucking printing press to print the children’s crusade?? c’mon man, who would’ve thought of it
shrewd -- observant!! sees what’s place in front of him and immediately knows how to work with it. looks at his boys and knows immediately what they need!
communicative -- okay, he has A Little trouble with this, but he’s also a 17 year old boy. they’d rather die than communicate. HOWEVER. he goes himself to speak with spot conlon and the brooklyn newsies, aka the most important allies they’ve got. turns davey’s big/expressive words into those the other newsies would understand (jack would’ve explained what auspicious meant. i know he would’ve)
status-orientated -- i’m interpreting this differently than i’m probably meant to. i think he’s more status AWARE. he knows who to go after for the biggest impact. he knows the leaders of the other boroughs and how to sweet talk them. he knows that going after weasel and the delanceys ultimately accomplishes nothing and he has to go straight to the top, etc etc
DAVID -- davey jacobs. one strong breeze away from a panic attack. SO good at hiding it. yknow the song razzle dazzle from chicago, that’s essentially “if you’re really good at making people think you know what you’re doing, they won’t stop to consider you’re full of shit” that’s kinda davey. he’s the most educated of the newsies and uses that to his advantage. talks himself out of trouble, which would be better if he hadn’t talked himself INTO the trouble in the first place. one day, like, 2 years into him being a newsie, race stops and is like “hey. do we even know davey’s favorite color?” is so good at letting people think they know all about him without actually giving away the actual deep knowledge of himself. he’s so tired. he’s not the group mom, he’s the exhausted uncle who was asked to babysit for a day that turned into him adopting the fucking kids.
okay, i’m torn between two, but I think caracal is my ultimate decision (the giant otter shrew was my other choice, if anyone cares)
socially tolerant introvert -- he’ll step forward as the co-leader of the manhattan boys during the strike, but by god is gonna have a panic attack about it later. he understands it’s important, though, that he put the idea in jack’s head and that jack relies on him to be the brains to his brawn. besides, it’s not hard to stand up for the newsies when he genuinely likes the kids (yes, even albert. it surprised him, too). after the strike, he’s perfectly content to let jack go back to sole leader and race back to second-in-command
adaptable -- went from schoolboy to newsie to strike leader in less than 24 hours. he showed up for his first day of selling papes. went to bed. showed up for his second day. saw the prices went up. made the mistake of saying the word “strike” around jack. suddenly is running a strike. and my man Did Not Falter
sensing/aware -- knows exactly what to say to boost the newsies (”seize the day”, anyone?). he can take stock of a situation in, like, .02 seconds and know how to move from there
communicative/expressive -- he’s called the walking mouth. need i say more.
confident/assertive -- during “world will know” he joins jack up on the scaffolding to get the chalk from the guy who writes out the headlines. when jack’s aggressiveness didn’t work, davey stepped up and talked the guy into stepping aside. just because he’s anxious doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to project confidence (it helps that the newsies all have his back and hype him up)
opportunistic -- like. literally everything that happens. something or someone stumbles, he steps right up and takes over. jack scabs? well, fuck him i’m the leader now. also during “watch what happens (reprise)” when jack is like “joe’s a jerk/he’s a rattlesnake” davey is IMMEDIATE with the “you’re right!/and you know why a snake starts to rattle?” like “oop jackie said something i can use against him! haha!”
focused/patient -- literally wwhr again!! jack is being bitter and refusing to help and davey’s like “well, i’m gonna go win a strike soooo”
a lot of the implied/negotiable traits fit really well too
KATHERINE -- katherine pulitzer plumber. could’ve let her father pave the way to her future, but went and got it for herself. refused to let herself stay in the social pages. hell, she decided she wanted a CAREER and WENT OUT AND GOT IT despite it being 1899!! (”a girl? it’s a girl! how the hell? is that even legal???”). smart as a whip (davey fully believes she’s smarter than him, and he’s right!)
i do kinda like the idea of her having one of those prissy-looking white cats with the long hair, mostly because the kat/kitty jokes would be hilarious. however, katherine herself isn’t prissy, so i ultimately don’t think it’d work.
she would be a black-billed magpie (although i think an argument could be made for black-winged kite)
extroverted/socially flexible -- she’s a reporter, she’s gotta be out there making friends and shaking hands. she’s literally friends with other children of newspaper tycoons AND the newsies. nobody is wrong as a friend
opportunistic/adaptable -- it’s not said How she first hears about the strike, but it’s safe to assume it’s her father. she bursts into jacobi’s deli and is like “hi i’m covering your strike now, good luck getting rid of me.” she saw an opportunity to FINALLY get out of the social pages, and by god is gonna grab it with both hands
confident -- i mean, look at her. katherine knows who she is and what she wants, and she doesn’t really give a shit what everyone else thinks
proactive/short-term planner -- listen. she’s confident, she knows what she wants. i NEVER said she thought out all the steps before hand. she’s just VERY good at making people believe she’s got it all figured out (much like davey)
manipulative -- okay, this is another one where i’m definitely not taking it the way i should. BUT. i mean. she’s a reporter. what reporter hasn’t twisted some words (”a little hyperbole never hurt anyone”)
cooperative -- literally working with a small army of newsies to spread their cause
perceptive -- again. reporter. She Sees All. yknow how moms always convince their kids they have eyes on the back of their head? that’s katherine. mush is convinced she knows when he’s lying. she doesn’t, but he overcompensates for it that it becomes obvious
again, a lot of the inferred and negotiable traits also fit
RACETRACK -- racetrack higgins. this lanky motherfucker.  he’s jack’s second in command so i do think he’s one of the older newsies, mayyyybe 16? i think he was only like 13 in 92sies, but meh. canon is a toy box and i’m a destructive toddler. i really like the headcanon going around that he’s a wiz with numbers and just assumes everyone else is too. he’s a bitch (affectionate) and sarcastic and literally doesn’t even sell in manhattan, but he’s ride or die for his boys.
his daemon is a raccoon, and he was furious when he settled (i. did not mean to type he, been having a lot of trouble typing today, but yknow what fuck it race has a male daemon. fuck you thats why) like. “people already see us as literaly garbage, why the fuck did you have to settle as a raccoon are you fucking kidding me?”
independent -- again. his second-in-command of the manhattan newsies, yet sells every day in brooklyn.i cannot for the life of me find it, or even remember Which actor it was, but one of the guys who played race said that he does his own thing and doesn’t keep himself stuck in manhattan (really takes “we goes were we wishes/we as free as fishes” literally)
socially flexible -- again, will make friends with kids from other boroughs (fully unrelated but i have not spelled boroughs correctly once in this post, shoutout to spell check lmao), while still being loyal to manhattan. might be a little in love with a newsie from brooklyn, who knows! not him! definitely doesn’t know that for sure!
conflict-avoidant -- look. he’ll roughhouse with the guys and get in stupid squabbles with other newsies and throw a punch or two when he absolutely has to, but he’s not a fighter. much like davey, he prefers to talk his way out of the trouble he talked himself into. he wasn’t immediately on board with the strike, seemed like a lot of trouble for AT BEST no change
intuitive/curious -- look, a man doesn’t walk across an entire bridge every day because he’s not curious about what’s going on in other places. he’s jack’s eyes and ears, because he’s just a fucking nosy little shit who wants to know everybody’s business
adaptable/opportunistic -- yall sensing a theme here? (”got a feeling ‘bout a headline/i’ll make up a headline/and i’ll say anything i hafta”). after jack scabs and fucks off, he has to step up with davey. really wish there was time in the movie OR musical for a scene about it, but davey needed support and race was right there to help
unambitious -- look. he’s pretty sure he’s only jack’s second because he’s been there the longest. he doesn’t know why jack picked him otherwise. he’s not gunning for leadership, he’s perfectly happy with where he is and what he’s go
SPOT -- sean “spot” conlon (yes i know sean is kinda a fanon name. i like it). the man, the myth, the legend. the reason everyone’s so scared of brooklyn. abrasive, rude, violent, looks out for his boys first and himself second, didn’t beat the shit out of race for selling in his borough.
i typically give assholes with hearts of gold pitbull daemons bc i think it’s funny, but like. pitbulls weren’t considered “bully” breeds in 1899 (i have a rant abt dogs being called “bully” breeds but i’ll keep my mouth shut) and idk what would’ve been. he definitely has a canine though.
this is a bit of a different analysis, because i’m using both the daemon forum AND wikipedia to get the time-appropriate facts, but i’m feeling english bulldog
in historical record, bulldogs were used for bull-baiting (which is insane. these small ass dogs baiting LITERAL BULLS. they really just did Whatever in the past, huh). they were athletic, with powerful jaws, high stamina, and short fuses. modern bulldogs are, uh. a little goofier and decidedly less athletic. poor spot. at least a lot of traditional domestic dog traits still apply
playing fast and loose with the core traits from tdf here, but self-assured/confident -- did yall see “brooklyn’s here”? my man has the cockiest grin i’ve ever seen in my LIFE
stubborn/determined -- sticks to his word of waiting to see if jack would fold before getting brooklyn involved in the strike (and he was right!! jack fucking folded!!). once he makes a decision, he sticks to it. it’s fucking impossible to change his mind (race finds it charming; hotspot finds it makes him wanna bash his head against a wall)
under the overview section on tdf, the “social” and “stress” sections fit very well. while spot has the WORST rb and comes off as cold towards others, he cares DEEPLY abt brooklyn and puts their needs first, no matter what. he’s loyal and caring to those who he claims as His
he’s thick-skinned, adaptable, and willing to forgive jack once jack comes back with a plan and a new fire under his ass
i just processed giving the kid named SPOT a dog daemon. god i’m hilarious.
CRUTCHIE -- Charles “Crutchie” Morris. i honestly don’t know what daemon he’d have!! he’s kind, loyal, understanding, an eternal optimist. he also lets himself get stepped over, lets others take advantage of that kindness. stands up for everybody but his damn self.
WAIT okay actually, i think an african wild dog would be perfect
social extrovert -- he’s so friendly!! he likes making other people smile, he’s always there to hype his friends up, he’ll do whatever and talk to whomever he has to to help his friends
conflict avoidant/passive/tolerant -- look. he talks a big game (”y’see this mister pulitzer?!”) but he knows he’s not a fighter. jack’s the brawn. he’s willing to let bygones be bygones. maybe roughhouse with the guys a bit, but nothing intense or serious
determined/hardworking/ambitious -- people look and talk down to him because of his disability, but he doesn’t let that stop him. he’s out selling every day with jack, he’s right out there with everyone during the strike. he doesn’t let anyone stop him from whatever he sets his mind to
cooperative/caring -- i’m putting these two together because i think, for him, they’re hand in hand. he has a massive heart; he cares SO MUCH and wants his friends -- his family -- to be safe and happy. like i said, he’ll work with whomever he has to in order to insure that happens
people pleaser/doormat -- let crutchie be mean 2023!!!! he’s always looking out for the others, he doesn’t have any left to look out for himself!!!!
uh. this got longer than i thought it would it’s 5 am so i hope this all makes sense and also it’s not gonna get buried away because i’m posting at such an awkward time lmao
F U C K i just realized i didn’t even get to sarah. augh. i’ll inevitably end up making another post abt this bc of what i’m like as a person, so i’ll talk abt her then sorrrrryyyyyyy

About that last ask, there's nothing wrong with a woman reading mlm or a man reading wlw. The problem is when that's the ONLY queer content they read. If a man only read wlw (or a woman mlm), I would personally view it as some form of fetishization as people who do this usually say stuff like "ew but lesbians/gay dudes are so gross, and I don't even relate to it." That's where I see the problem.
Also, if you're not wlw or mlm but you're "inserting" yourself into those romances (to make it straight, I'm assuming), that's weird as fuck?? Lmfao. But that's just my opinion.
yeah that’a def true, it depends on the kind of person they are and just. how they do it. it can be done fetishizingly and it can be done not fetishizingly imo
and idk… i can see both sides kinda. i dont think i find it weird. i mean, unless it’s a fanfic that focuses on queer struggles or like specific queer scenarios in some way, when it comes down to it… idk how different it is than inserting yourself into a story about a straight relationship? like i feel like it comes down to you liking one of the characters and wanting to imagine yourself with them. but also i should point out that this only applies if the character you’re imagining yourself with is either straight and the fic you’re reading is headcanoning them as queer and putting them in a not canon queer ship, or if they are canonically bi/pan/etc. Totally ignoring/changing a character’s sexuality to imagine yourself with them feels weird to me

session 63 end
Tumblr media
okayyy. neat-fucking-o. thats done and boy OH FUCKING BOY i have a lot to say. and this is going to get mildly serious. sorry. theres a lot to uncover this session which basically is just one huge overall plot point. the whole timeline shindig. the thing that has messed me up for a few hours ngl.
man.... this is gonna be a long one. im not even exaggerating. (still, a tldr at the end)
so, the main thing besides from the time shindig plot, which is both important and essential and precious: DAVESPRITE <3
k cool. ill expand on that throughout this whole note, but would rather like to make a whole analogy first before i do so.
so, to start off from last session, dave went back in time to fix jade and john’s death.
but i guess, from what ive read, GC never realized what she did was bad. she basically screwed everyone over and dave had to go back to fix things, which yes, does sound bad. but honestly? i dont think she really realized how bad it was until davesprite had the talk with her. and now they are both friends i take it, shocking development. but thats between davesprite, rather than dave himself so there may be two different views on how he sees GC. anyways, it was pretty bad. i wont just forget that. i love her character but she killed off two characters (who thankfully are now alive), making dave a sprite and future rose to just not exist anymore. or... well.... she does, but she seemed to have fused with PRESENT rose. which i guess we’ll figure out how that works the next time we see her. which will probably be on derse.
but, tbh, GC wanted to apologize and felt bad about the whole situation. so im giving her the benefit of the doubt here.
now.. man...
can i take a second to analyze davesprite? and a little bit about the concept of john/dave’s friendship (just a tad)? ie the two greatest things in the world? thanks.
i think the thing that hit me the hardest was how davesprite (im calling him that to distinguish which dave im talking about but keep in mind i should be calling them both dave. but this makes it easier to write up.) well, davesprite explained how he’d continue to reset the timeline until john and jade are alive. which basically means he would use himself as a sacrifice to allow their survival. which ALSO means he cares more for them than he does himself. he’d throw his life away for them. he knew there was a possibility of him ceasing to exist if they reset the timeline again. he literally said it in such a nonchalant way that it makes me wonder how much his friends really mean to him. which in retrospect, is a lot. now pls keep this in mind for the next part.
now, dave also has so much appreciation towards himself. but not in the cocky way, of course. rather in the way that shows self love?? kinda?? like he genuinely wanted to hang with davesprite, brainstorm his comic and vice versa bc they both think their alt version is that cool. i know it should sound kinda narcissistic, but listen. a lot of people dont often appreciate themselves for who they are. and what i really want to emphasize on that here, is that this comes back to the whole putting himself before others thing. because that specific line i mentioned before is a BIG FUCKING DEAL. since dave thinks so highly of himself as a cool guy, rad dude, arent we so awesome type kid that he LITERALLY didnt care for his life in that one hot second. he made sure he was a pawn used to help out his friends rather than an actual human being who should worry about his life as well. he didnt care if he survived or not in the process of making sure everything was going alright. which is such a fucking leap from this whole self-respecting thing. its as if that didnt matter anymore. and that takes a fucking beating. that shows how much dave truly loves his friends. do you know how fucking BIG THAT WHOLE DEAL IS?
take john for example. dave didnt give two shits who the person on the other line was. he found out GC was the troll who killed john and basically threatened her with every inch of his life to make her back away from him. he knew what it would cause and said “fuck you” in bright and bold. all because he didnt want to see his friend die again. which? fair enough. and if we look back at the last session, god that could mess someone up. especially someone as young as 13. rose even got the worst end of the stick bc she flat out ceased to exist. but then again, thats in the same boat as jade/john. bc they all technically died. yet davesprite didnt. he remembers it. davesprite isnt just going to forget. he’s going to have surviver’s guilt for a long time, because being dave’s guide will forever be a reminder that he’s the version in the doomed timeline. he’s the only one who knows what happened, and he wont become the “true dave” in a sense that he’s now just considered “davesprite” and nothing more, since he cant just be dave since his timeline ended up fucked. not to mention he technically said he was fine with it, bc since it meant the others survived, he wouldnt care what happened to his life. even tho he should and it still probably hurts him idk. and that kills me a little. actually, more than a little. this is personally the most gut wrenching scene in homestuck (but i may just be speculating too much). but that wont stop him from helping dave and giving him all the answer, and also protecting john with everything he has.
and, man, i feel as if he’s gonna be such a good guide for dave. he already gave him the loot, the rundown and is very open about questions dave already has because he knows how tough it probably is to have a shitty guide. considering he was stuck with calsprite for 4 months. so obviously he’s going to help as much as possible. since he probably had little to none and didnt learn as much as he should have through the course of sburb. but now, as a guide, he can easily access all the info he lost during the pathway of his timeline. and share it with dave so he doesn’t struggle and actually completes the game rather than end up in a doomed timeline like himself.
but yes. dave’s blatant adoration for john basically saved them both in a way. and it seems as if its a little mutual considering john told dave he’d always believe him no matter what in the end. how he reconsidered everything, remembered the note and realized how good their friendship is to just give it up like that. and then vice versa. dave couldnt continue on the game without him or jade, so he went back in time. and showed his pissed-off protective side in order to save john again. which warms my heart bc they both mean so much to each other. and both got each other super sentimental gifts and wrote each other such touching cards.
and thats a good way to end the session, i think.
so there we have it. ive never wanted to hug a character so bad than i do with davesprite. i just hope everyone at least acknowledges him in some way, and gives him some amount of respect for what he did for everybody. ive only met him for like 10 pages, but i think he’s the most emotional character so far. and i guess since he’s dave himself, and i feel for dave based on his situation with bro, its safe to say i would protect him with my life. which i dont want to be *that* person but hey, its true. its just that he’s been through so much bullshit, and davesprite is the only survivor of his timeline, always will be reminded of it whenever he sees dave/john/rose/jade playing the game, is now a fucking sprite who wont be able to live his own path but just be a guide and god, i feel for him. i really do.
i shouldnt have written such a long note about davesprite.. but his whole story as to how he became a thing really got to me, alright?
i should write a tldr, cool. here yall go; i actually love davesprite, he’s been through some shit and he deserves hells of respect. GC is forgiven and we’ll find out next time how both version of rose.. fused together?

I was firmly in the camp of reylo is misogynist, that it sucks that little girls look up to Rey and her and countless other media are glorifying shitty men. But seeing tros mildly made me ship them. I think it helps that he’s dead, but I feel like him saving Rey, literally giving his life to Rey at the end feels like adequate “redemption” to me. I mean he was irredeemably evil, but he died so I feel like it’s an ok fictional arc. Do you think his portrayal was sexist?
SPOILERS
Over time in fandom I've noticed that there's a lot of overlap when someone talks about if a character is sexist. For example
Is the character intentionally written to be a sexist person?
Does the story itself seem to consciously or unconsciously advocate a sexist view or ideology?
In a binary good/bad fictional universe does one character do sexist things but seem to not be suitably "punished" to the moral standard of that universe? Or criticised, but insufficiently so?
Is the overall arc of the story or characters evocative of tropes that are widely seen as sexist or regressive?
Any or all of these can get lobbed at a franchise or a character, but they mean pretty different interpretations, and the listener (or fan) may take some as a personal attack of their entertainment taste, or even their personal integrity. So it really helps to be specific, as much as reasonably possible, when you enter fan discussions you know will be emotionally loaded.
Before we get into my opinion, I first want to tell you that it's okay to like a pairing that makes other people uncomfortable, and it's okay to like a pairing that lands on any of the 4 ways listed above. Liking asshole characters, or wanting the asshole and the hero to kiss--that is what entertainment is for. While fiction certainly can affect us, for 99.99 % of adults, shipping has zero affect on our IRL behavior. If you have children, especially 13 and under, then I think that it's worth it to examine the media they consume, and have discussions about the complexities of human attraction, and what is safe. If you are yourself a young person, I think it's okay to ask an adult (hopefully a wise one) to talk through what you see on screen, and how it makes you feel about relationships. Hell, I'm an adult and I like to talk about it.
Now I'm jumping to the assumption for the rest of this that you [reader] are at least an older teen or an adult, and capable of consuming fiction with reasonable distance and judgement.
Re: shipping Reylo in RotS - sure, if you want to. The movie certainly puts A LOT in that basket and while I did not like watching it or the in-film circumstances that brought it about, they put that pairing in there to entertain people and if you were entertained then JJ & Disney's goal was achieved. That is no judgment for or against your morals. It's just stuff that happens in the movie. (And by far not even the worst part of the movie. At least it means someone's relationship had an arc of some kind that resolved.)
Now going back up to my numbers--I think Reylo definitely fits #4, but personally I have shipped plenty of bad man / good woman tropey relationships, as has almost anyone who's ever been active in fandom. So who cares. In the last 4 years I've definitely joked about reylo as a garbage ship, or the people doing it having bad taste, but that's just an opinion. I've even eased off of that kind of humor (though i still will shittalk kylo) because, well, shipper trash talk is a lot less fun when people become obnoxious cyberbullies.
For my personal opinion, I liked Reylo in ep 8 because I saw it as a case of the hero getting involved with a dangerous, selfish person. And over the course of the movie she tries to pull him out of his violent cycles, but he shuts her down. So she dumps him and moves on. I like that story, and I thought it was pretty bold to go against the bad boy romance trope in that way. I also thought it was important for Rey to try to save him in that context, and that it was okay she failed. Both characters were interesting and their dynamic was interesting.
Unfortunately, ep 9 is a whole different basket of kittens. The story swings back the opposite way, and Rey unlearns her lesson, and even though he'd been given an incredible number of times to repent before, suddenly Kylo repents now for a frustratingly unexplained reasons. Is it because Rey touched his chest? Because his mom died while contacting him? Because he had food poisoning? I don't know, and bc the movie didnt care, I don't care either. In RotS, actions have zero consequences, characters don't have visible emotional responses to things, and nothing matters.
Looking st the whole series, what do I personally think of Kylo switching sides? I think it's horseshit, because we don't know why he did, and because he's already genocided at least two planets. P.L.A.N.E.T.S. Not to mention killing his family and torturing the other main characters. It's hard to compare Kylo to other fictional "reformed" bad guys because the scope of Star Wars is so beyond anything else. About the only comparable thing for me would be Vegita in Dragonball Z, and his change was waaaaaaaay better because it look years and it was never about his moral alignment in the first place. Unfortunately, in SW everything is about moral alignment. And looking at his crimes, Kylo was as far gone as someone can be. I wasn't interested in seeing him saved, let alone redeemed, and I wasn't convinced by how it played out. I rolled my eyes a lot. So I guess I land on #3 as one of my chief complaints about it. Except that's not really sexism so much as me not liking genocidal characters. And I guess somewhat about the violence he does to her personally.
One last thing:
BEN SOLO KYLO REN WAS NOT "REDEEMED."
HE WAS, AT BEST, SAVED.
HAVING YOUR SOUL "SAVED" AND BEING BROUGHT TO A MORAL AWAKENING IS NOT REDEMPTION.
REDEMPTION REQUIRES SERVICE. BOTH VADER AND KYLO WERE SAVED BEFORE THEIR DEATHS. THEY WERE NOT REDEEMED.
This is still worthwhile--if you believe in an afterlife, then saving a soul for heaven or the light side or whatever, that has significance. But don't say Kylo or Ben was redeemed. He wasn't. There is a difference.

3 for the unusualish asks💞
Oh I will girl ( you should have NOT give me that number right after the bold type season finale)
I cannot rant about Taylor bc everythings good and I’m living for that so lets just go with my favourite show and how fucked up everything is, I am usually not someone who voices their opinion too much especially on here bc thats just not the type of person I am but anyway
The Bold Type has been my favourite tv show and if you have never seen it I still recommend you do bc overall its still a damn good show dont get me wrong if it does not seem like that (there are several reasons to watch it and I want it to become more popular so pls do)
Well, I started watching it right at the beginning, June/July last year when the first episode aired and BOI it blew me away, like, i did not expect anything major BUT lemme just say it destroys every other show its just that good (I love the girls it focuses on individually and together, the boss is full perfection, the main ship (a bi girl of colour and a proud muslim lesbian) was breathtaking, the storylines were on point and emotional and it just idk maybe they set the bars too high)
So the second season started airing beginnign of june and you know, I WAS worried before that they could not keep up but I had SO MUCH faith (but it also seems like the writers were kind of replaced and man that shows) the first few episodes were fire alright which is even worse bc i had lost all my worries and knew I was gonna be fed the whole season but little did I know …
You know I really hate complaining too much about something about a tv show that is there to enjoy and make me happy so I’ll stop thinking about it after this post but I do get the frustration so much (but death threats and bashing the whole show is not helpful whoops I said it)
Just a few short notes on things that anger me a little (I’m probably forgetting thigns but anyway):
1. Jane (she is one of the three main girls) I really like(d) Jane a lot and I feel like I can identify with her, we are very much alike in many ways and this especially showed in season 1. I dont “hate” her at all after this season, not even dislike her, but she they used her for almost all (?) the controversial topics as the one who makes rude and subtle offensive comments, which is not bad in itself bc she learned from it mostly all the time and apologizes but it was just too often and much for me. in the first season Jane seemed at least trying to be more understanding even when she could not really and she was relatable with her concerns and her feelings and this was not really the case for me this season. I felt like she did not own up enough for some mistakes and it did not give me this tbt feeling of happiness and goodness and wholesomeness I had after every damn episode last season????
2. Screen Time (Jacqueline/Alex/Adena) You could probably talk about everyone of them in detail now but I dont have the energy - let me just say Adena and Jacqueline are my favourite characters so maybe I am biased and I know that this whole post need to be edited probably after I rewatch the season bc I can easier give feedback when everything is fresh in my mind but you know, all we fans wanted was to have backstorys (and bc he didnt really get one either this probably applies to Oliver too) not even much, just maybe like the episode in season 1 when we got to learn more about Jacquelines family and her past in general (still crying), it was so well-written bc it was not just something thrown in there but integrated in the storyline, it had purpose, it was emotional, it gave insight into her character and I honestly saw her with different eyes after that (and loved her even more), now those 3 or 4 just are really pushed to the sides. You dont see Adena without Kat really or talking about her character without it being about her sexuality and Kat (oh hey a gay one complaining about that??  yes bc even tho I answer I am gay after someone asks me “how are you” theres more to a person and especially to someone as interesting as Adena. I love hearing non heteros talk about their love life and everything surrounding it but at least then let Adena talk about how her coming out was, what she finds interesting in other women, if she ever struggled with it (i know they tried to cover some things but naah idk i just expected more) or just talk about something else, let us see her going to the movies with friends, a childhood throwback when she was in art class, let her talk about what she likes about some types of art. AND HER WHOLE CULTURE? I am a white western woman and I never see muslim representation on tv and I feel like still havent? i forgot at some point?! there are so many non-white people watching it hoping to be represented and ofc you cannot please everyone but now it just feels like Adena is just a proud lesbian you know. And Alex? what who was that again?
3. the storylines - sooo first of all, I liked the storylines more than most people probably from what I have seen on the tag. I think some of them were hard to put in just one episode and try to talk about everything important and still have  show going on, which is why it did not work all the time  have less storylines but make them work would be better. I really did appreciate that they tried to have a lot of stuff covered and they tried to put different points in there but there were a lot of het relationship and other drama stuff to be shown so the storys were often pushed too hard to the sides. this I say having the gun episode in mind the most i felt really unsatisfied after it and I was really looking forward to it bc i think its important and brave for them to talk about it (anyway watch one day at a time, the episode on the same matter is pure gold) . idk its alright its not the same feeling its less spectacular but I’ll stop whining about that now.
4. KADENA - I’ll try to be objective here , i do get that you cannot have a happy relationship without anything going on for 10 episodes (ok you can I would love that but maybe its less wise when it comes to viewers idk?? i stan unpopular shows so who am I to know) BUT come on, not like this?? they started of as PERFECT alright and then it all went downhill, you know cheating and stuff idk, I am not happy with it, could be more original, could be less meh but whatever I was like “ ok I’lll roll with it maybe its gonna bring a new light in this, let them grow, let them learn” but man idk. it was all a mess and once they made up and everything was fine (after 3 epsiodes of pure stress for my weak heart) after 5 minutes there was something new? almost any interaction was either them arguing or making up. I liekd their conversations mostly I really did but I was tired of drama all the time, after this season I’ll just say it: If they want to continue it like that until the end of season 3 I’d rather have them not together anymore. its no fun, its stress for them and even more for me and it would not seem realistic when they make them endgame at the very last minute (which I assume they will bc they promote it like that) without using multiple episodes and time passing to really let them grow in the relationship, without that it would just feel like one day after the finale of season 3 they would have somethng else coming up to fuck them up again. I was really baffled with the finale bc I WAS NOT expecting that they really wouldnt resolve it at all let us suffer like this (I remember that Nikohl i think said that it would be like that but someone else also said recently that it really feels like a finale and that the fans would feel assured but excited for the next season but excuse me? tbt fans who are happy about that end are great. would love to meet one one day. but where they at?? suttard fans all 3 of you I am happy for you honestly. and for sutton. richard idc. i am bitter tho.
I STILL HAVE SO MUCH HOPE FOR SEASON 3 (pls let the old writers come back, listen to the fans, there are not too many instead of trying to make it more appealing to the general public what about pleasing us again with friendship, gayness, depth and happiness?)
(& remember: I.love.this.show. i do. I would recommend it even when there would only be season 2. but it would not be my fave anymore. its like as if taylor would have the same albums with the same music, same career, same backstory BUT her not really caring about her fans. I would still love her as an artist so freaking much. but would I jump off building for her?? naah maybe if there were a balcony and a pool who knows
Thanks for coming to my TED talk

im in the mood for an abemiha meta so im going to talk about the language use in oofuri! and by language use i mean the use of the word “like” (suki/好き/スキ)
im putting it under the cut since i gotta include some images. beware of minor manga spoilers! really, really minor though lol
first i’m going to provide an explanation of terms and stuff, and their connotations (info is from jisho.org and wordreference. i am still just a beginner in japanese but i am fairly confident in these explanations!)
a lot of you may know this but japanese has three systems of writing, which is going to be very important for my discussion! these are broken down into hiragana and katakana (referred to together as “kana”, symbols are syllabic) and kanji (written characters that represent a word/phrase) you can express japanese in writing in kana alone, but its way more common to use kanji along with kana in writing. this will be really important to my discussion, as i will be highlighting the distinction between katakana usage and kanji usage of the word “suki”
suki, written “好き” in kanji and “スキ” in katakana, is defined as: “liking; fondness; love” which can be a little confusing - the distinction between “liking” something and “loving” something isn’t quite available, so that typically necessitates context. but with written language, especially in a language with three entirely different writing systems, i think it is safe to say there are other ways of constructing that distinction.
(i can hear a distant “but gabby what about DAISUKI!!! isn’t that MORE about love?” yes and no! ive addressed this in an earlier post but in general the word “suki” is considered to be more serious and romantic, while “daisuki” is a bit more.. uh.. “extra” and frivolous)
so why would an author choose to use kana (in this particular case katakana) in place of kanji?
the kanji is difficult/obscure (gonna just say that “好” doesnt seem particularly difficult at all - it is taught in grade 4)
the author wants to stress sound of the word/emphasize the word (this is important for my interests lol)
a stylistic choice
(i picked up this info a bit from japanese language forums & from translating stuff so it might not be completely accurate but! i think this sums it up)
now that that is out of the way im going to make my bold ass claim! that in the text of oofuri (or just in mihashi speak), スキ is love, and 好き is like! i will now try to show u how i came to this very very bold conclusion:
the first instance we see of “suki” being used in the manga is when abe tells mihashi he likes him as a pitcher (bottem left bubble is “i like it”)
Tumblr media
which is followed up by this panel:
Tumblr media
in sequential panels, we have two different spellings of “suki”. it is made clear from the very first chapter in the manga, that (esp for mihashi) that kana “suki” and kanji “suki” have different, important implications. it seems here that mihashi is bewildered that abe would say anything like “like” to him, and writing suki as スキ only drives this home further, almost as if “like” was in bold or italicized
now this is just the first instance and only proves that katakana can be used as a tool to emphasize something, or that maybe mihashi doesn’t know the kanji for suki, or that this is how “suki” is translated to mihashi speak - but it can also set us up to look out for this distinction in the future. I’ll get to the confession scene last my dudes just hold on a minute lol
now the “this is the mihashi version of suki” theory could work if not for the fact that we have at least 2 instances of mihashi using 好き:
the first when he says he likes the big carrot chunks in the curry:
Tumblr media
and again when he asks abe if he likes catching (i’ll say more on this in a bit):
Tumblr media
so if mihashi didnt just learn 好き (its fair to say he always knew since hes not like illiterate dgfdg) then in this instance, “suki” doesn’t have any particular emphasis -- ie mihashi is saying “like” here
setting aside mihashis fondness for carrots is the question he asks abe which is “you like being a catcher, huh?” to which abe emphatically replies:
Tumblr media
this is followed by mihashis conclusion, where we see the shift back to スキ:
Tumblr media
“i see. i like pitching. and abe likes catching”  (mihashi uses スキ elsewhere when he talks about his feelings towards pitching; we can pretty much assume that he loves it. thats like his whole character) mihashi wasnt sure how much abe liked catching, and after hearing abe’s response, shifts 好き to スキ. it is subtle, but it means a lot! abe likes/loves catching as much as mihashi likes/loves pitching! there wasnt really a need for clarification on the reader’s part here - we can get what abe is saying right away, but mihashi must confirm it for himself and re-confirm to the reader that “スキ” has a special meaning in this manga/to mihashi
moving on!!!!!! just to solidify, i want to show a couple more instances where スキ shows up:
here, in the word for crush: (the word crush is lit. “person you like” - interestingly, while “person”(人) is in kanji, “suki” is written in katakana)
Tumblr media
ofc this could just be because this is handwritten, and it is easier to read handwritten kana, so perhaps it is this way for clarity (人 has 2 strokes so its not an issue, but 好 has 6 so its just a bit more complicated) BUT higuchi. (unfortunately for amateurs like me who try to translate her work) really is not opposed to handwriting more complicated kanji in her manga. i also haven’t looked hard enough but perhaps there is an instance where 好き is handwritten. dont know though!
and here, unrelated to abe and mihashi, when suzune is telling her boyfriend  ookawa that she loves him (its blue cuz its an omake on the cover thats just how it is)
Tumblr media
again, it is handwritten, but also this scene seems to rely on the emphasis provided by the katakana
and now. drumroll. im finally focking ready to talk about the confessoin scene! i have talked about how it can be read as a “confession” in this post, but i think it is definitely worth bringing up again bc it is my focking point!
maybe u already guessed (or read my other post) but when abe and mihashi tell each other they like each other it is with スキ:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
am i trying to imply theyre in love already? yes and no! i think that スキ here is meant to draw our eyes to the word so we remember it well, or maybe give us a hint of what’s to come in the story (like a real confession scene between them) the two of them are very naive and dont know each other well in the beginning, but it is clear higuchi wants us to pay attention to this word and ask ourselves why it might be written in this way, and how this writing can kind of make the meaning of “suki” ambiguous
(as an aside id like to note how in the panels above, the phrase “i like you” is isolated from the rest of the sentence. as u probably know abe’s full phrase is “not just as a pitcher, i like you as a person, too!” bc of the way japanese grammar works, though, abe’s “i like you” clause out of context can work as its own sentence; and higuchi chose to give it its own bubble. mihashis “i like you” is even isolated from his “me too!” which i think is interesting. mihashis flashback later in the manga to abe’s “i like you” is segmented in exactly the same way)
also in this scene is where mihashi says he loves being a pitcher w/ スキ:
Tumblr media
so if we add the layer that this scene is from mihashis perspective he may very well be meaning “love” in this scene, and may have even interpreted abe’s words in that way (again at the beginning we already see mihashi interpreting abe’s 好き as スキ, so perhaps he is doing it again - though it is left unclear on purpose)
make of this what you will - i could be just picking up on unimportant things. after all, “suki” absolutely isn’t the only word that is emphasized/ kana in the manga, so perhaps this is just a coincidence. but i think it is pretty significant that it is fairly consistent of a distinction in the manga, for such a loaded word, and i honestly suspect this isn’t going to be the last we see of it.

i was thinking that bruce springsteen was my...
This might sound stupit but whys bitusa problematic ? I thought it was based on a questioning, critical patriotism ?
it isnt REALLY....that is part of the problem, it is just so misunderstood. and like i get that bruce often buries some of his most challenging subjects beneath the surface of the songs but that album is just....ugh idk, there isnt really anything wrong with it. i understand its purpose in his catalogue and as a singular album, i just feel like it is an exception that is taken as the rule. it is his most famous album and therefore influences the way a majority of people see bruce and his music and the message of it isn’t worn on the surface, it gives people an impression of him that i feel is disingenuous when taken out of the context of the album. and it falls into some 80s cliches while for me most of his other albums are suspended out of the time they were made, bc the complexity of his references, in his other albums it seems like he wasnt trying to make something that was defined by the time it was made in, but BITUSA is very much defined by its time. and while the writing on the album is solid, and some of it challenging, i don’t feel like it is as confrontational about it. when i look at it in context with his other 80s albums i find it disappointing in that it doesn’t challenge the listener. the river, nebraska, and tunnel of love are all albums that have an emotional honesty that is very present and hard to ignore, they are each challenging in their brutal honesty and they are not shy about the things they deal with. while i personally find it hard to misunderstand the song “born it the usa” and find that it is still so misinterpreted baffling, it is not balanced by songs that reinforce that message in more surface ways. on the river, “hungry heart” (a song that i find disturbingly cheerful considering its subject matter), is balanced by “the river” which gives the album its key narrative in the clearest terms. but all the key songs that tell the thematic story of BITUSA hold their truths beneath the surface and hide behind bold titles: “my hometown”, “glory days”, and “no surrender” are equally misunderstood as the title song and are again some of his most well-known songs. they are also so goddamn catchy that it distracts from the message. it frustrates me as someone who sees springsteen as one of the most important critics and truth-tellers of the american experience, that he is so widely seen as this fist-pounding meathead and writer of patriotic anthems, when that image of him, created by a misinterpretation of BITUSA seems to discredit the rest of his hugely important and brutally honest catalogue. it just seems like on his other albums he was unwilling to compromise the message in favor of “hits” and i see him giving into that impulse with BITUSA, and the fact that there are music videos and all that accompanying it just made it even more image-driven.
that being said, no, it isnt REALLY problematic. it is well-written and the songs are solid. springsteen is a great songwriter, always wrote some catchy fucking songs, i don’t mind that there is a playfulness on the album, it is nice that there is, i just wish it wasn’t the album that defined people’s impression of him. he is just so much more complex than that album makes him seem in my mind. born to run will always be his definitive mission statement. that album puts forth the mythology that he would build on or dismantle with every subsequent album. ideally, i would like that album to define him in other people’s minds. which of course is silly and proves that all of this ranting is driven by my own wish that i didnt have to constantly explain why i admire him so deeply, erase BITUSA from peoples minds before they give him a chance. so that experience has made it difficult for me to enjoy BITUSA, and therefore i personally, in my own life, find it problematic.
funnily enough, “dancing in the dark”, the most famous song from that album, is the one i have no problems with, while it is unbelievably catchy, the words start to stick with you and fight their way into your consciousness, but it also doesn’t seem as deceptive as the other songs, the music carries that specific feeling so well. i guess it is bc that song is about a feeling and isnt carrying a message about the american experience....
ANYWAYS i’m sure you didnt actually want an essay-long answer when you wrote your reply and i apologize, i have clearly thought waaaaaaaay too much about it. but springsteen really isn’t very problematic at all, i just wish more people knew that ://///
