In the Morning
“A Simpler Time” DnD story
Tumblr media
Leandra’s lavender eyes glazed over as she stared deep into the fire. Past the smoke and dancing flames into where the embers glowed hot and bright. Her hair still drenched hanging in clumps a crossed her back, she didn’t bother to do something with it. She was drained, half drowned, her heart broken.
Evans song still echoed hauntingly in her mind, dark eyes somehow staring back in the flames . His face pale and gaunt as itt has been, was the same face she knew as a child. And he had recognized her, though he didn’t know how, he had known the old scriptures she had quoted. “Be not afraid of Chaos...” she had said, she was a fool.
What happened to you?
“Your all wet?!” Lea looked up to see Amielia standing across the fire, arms crossed and nose scrunched the way little children do when they don’t understand, and she smiled softly.
“I went swimming, I’m waiting for my hair to dry.” She half-lied, trying to shield the little one from nightmares if possible.
“In your cloths?” She raised her eyebrow and smirked, not believing Lea’s fib for a second. “In the middle of the night with the Kelpies?”
“Your too smart. Just don’t worry about it, you should go to bed. I’ll tell you about it in the morning.” Ami scrunched her nose again, a little crease forming on its bridge as she shuffled around the fire careful not to stumble on her dress. She was so clearly tired, dark circles under her eyes, the tips of her pointed ears drooping, but Lea said nothing as the young elf settled in next to her and leaned on her still damp arm. Berlin, her puppy, hopping up and lying across their conjoined laps.
“Whatever you did, it mad Sillia so angry. She makes the tent feel like it’s filled with smoke.” Lea gave the little elf a sideways glance, wondering if she will ever get used to the things that come out of her mouth but says nothing and just pulls her closer. “Can I just stay here with you while you dry? Maybe I can take some of the sadness away.”
Lea doesn’t respond, she isn’t sure how... instead she just pets Ami’s hair and hums a song that she knows by heart but doesn’t remember learning. Holding her favorite little girl till they both fall asleep by the embers. Dreaming of so little and yet so much.
Eyes so brown they are almost black. Soft hands holding her back, fingers tight and warm around her wrist though her arms shake with fear. A friend yelling loudly yet not loud enough to cover the sound of that song. A haunting song that she knows yet doesn’t remember learning, sang by a man who shouldn’t be alive.
In the morning she rises quietly, careful not to wake Amelia and begins her morning routine. Prayers and stretching out her muscles to help align the flow of mana. She hears her companions rise but does not say a word, nor do any of them talk to her. Not Amelia, or lance, or even Faf, choosing to let her do what she must to be ok.
She catches a glimpse of Sillia who is packing her things to leave, Lea had figure she would. When it comes to fight or flight both Leandra and the halfling leaned more toward flight than their friends. In any other circumstances Leandra would do the same, but this was different. This was personal.
Lance tried to calm Silli, apologizing for scaring her. Lea gritted her teeth to keep from doing the same. Her poor excuse for an apology had not worked last night and it would not suffice now. She knew that. So while her friend pack she stretched and centered herself for the day ahead.
“Stay safe...” Sillia’s voice came more as a command that a request, carrying over the sand of the lakes edge. She stood far away shoulders taunt, barely looking back to address her. Lea paused only a moment before nodding but saying nothing. She never made promises she couldn’t keep.
