Corsets & Bustiers

I was cleaning all the old stuff and I found this super plush faux fur wrap, similar but better than Poo’s from K3G no offence Bebo🌷it’s a black-lilac twirly scarf, smaller than how it appears in the video, I had taken it when I was 16… it was on sale cuz back then Indians were not that “stylish” (they started copying bloggers from the west) well we only had a handful of Fashionistas over here, like Me & Poo and the moment I saw that scarf I was like, “it’s unmissable, I’m buying this” it was for around 700/- (after discount) from Forever New. I have kept all my satin tops over here, I love corsets, far too much than you’ll ever fathom 🦢 luckily some brand has recently introduced a whole wide range full of corsets, they literally remind me of Suede Aesthetic (from my journal on tumblr) because of the classic “Parisian Boudoir” vibe, I love different types of corsets, some are already structured to give you that poised, graceful look, some enhance your overall silhouette, while some others have been obsoleted by “shapewear” and spandex but corsets have managed to retain their glamorous charm over the years… and luckily they are not as uncomfortable as they were back in the renaissance period or Victorian times… I had a few but they are too old now (almost 5-6 years old) so I got one in Satin, this particular Ecru shade is more like Vanilla, it looks powder beige/pinkish nude in the images but I like it either way, it’s got that typical “heirloom style” with hook fastening on the front… something which was considered more of an inner wear back in the 19th century, it’s a classic re-edition of the tailored atelier piece in it’s cult favourite, signature style and it’s designed to be worn outside because it has a mesh lining with a thicker (textured) satin fabric on top but you can always layer it… it fits me better than the model because different corsets suit different body types, I’m not that petite and I have a slightly broad structure and an inverted V frame, I have broad shoulders and a tapering V torso with a broad waistbone (which is again less broader than the shoulders) so the style which I’ve picked goes well with my frame, for those who have a heavier built with rounded arms and smaller shoulders, sweetheart necklines are the most appealing…

P.S. You can checkout Zara’s new Studio collection - it has a Grand “Savoir-Faire”/Victorian Gothic theme which is as grim & poetic as one would like, I’ll give it a 9/10 and probably add one extra point for the buzzing moths & wasps and sparkling silverware. It reminds me of Valentino and Saint Laurent 🤍 but all the lace and satin are adding a much more unique “personal touch”

WIG REVIEW: THE UNDOING

You guys. Remember that time I said I was going to try to watch new movie releases and do more wig reviews in preparation for the weirdest Oscar season ever? Well instead I watched a lot of prestige TV. So. Here we are! Movies be damned, there are a lot of tv shows with women in bad red wigs and I watched them! The Undoing is one of those shows. Having already suffered through two whole seasons of Nicole Kidman in another David E. Kelley prestige HBO show (AND THE HORROR OF HER WIGS!) I wasn’t sure if I could stomach another one, but you guys - this one is TOTALLY DIFFERENT. It’s in NYC and her wig is curly not straight!!! Let’s discuss (and a whole lot more!) I will be going episode by episode...

Episode 1: The Undoing

First off, I love that this episode name is just the same name as the show. I can already tell we are in for some real creativity with this show! Anyway, we meet Nicole Kidman who probably has a character name but who cares! She is super rich and married to Hugh Grant which I absolutely love as a fan of the Paddington movies - she is the villain in the first one and he is in the second - and this show already feels like a villain supergroup movie because I definitely hate both of them. They’re both doctors, their palatial house looks like a magazine, and they have a seemingly well adjusted tween who doesn’t look like either of them (but he is the kid actor from A Quiet Place and Ford v Ferrari so ok I guess he can act?) Their one problem is that said kid wants a dog but they can’t have one because Nicole Kidman tells the kid that Hugh Grant once accidentally allowed his family dog to run into traffic and his family blamed him and that definitely sounds like a lie! A big little lie!!!

Speaking of which, Nicole Kidman’s wig. As we know from my harrowing journey through her Big Little Lies wig, David E. Kelley likes her as a redhead and I hate all her wigs. This wig harkens back to the 90s when she was still a scientologist and didn’t wear wigs all the time (what a different time!) Unlike back then, Kidman now has a new terrifying face to match her terrifying wigs. Truly, I don’t know what plastic surgeon she pissed off but her mouth is in a constant Joker grin and she is barely able to move parts of her face anymore? The wig is a tangled mess but the true horror is the seamwork - the part is from places not real and also imagined and the texture is something close to a Halloween fright wig.

Which brings me to the real theme of this show: Nicole Kidman’s addiction to midweight duster coats. She owns them all, y’all. We first see her in this green velvet number which looks like a robe, spans no seasons, and also carries you nowhere. BUT paired with this red curly mess, it does look like she is paying homage to Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus, and for that I say: amen. And also: PLEASE PUT A HEX ON THIS ENTIRE SHOW PLEASE.

Now to the plot??? Nicole Kidman sends her kid to a fancy schmancy private school and she is on some fundraiser committee with her only gal pal, Lily Rabe (praise be!) plus some other harpies that definitely won’t matter to the rest of this show at all. Also present is a new interloper of indeterminate ethnicity who has the audacity to be young, attractive, bearing curly hair WITHOUT a wig, and a small child who she has to feed from her own perfect bosom. THE HARPIES ARE SO PISSED BY BREASTFEEDING Y’ALL.

Anyway, this interloper chick is definitely weird and shows up at Nicole Kidman’s gym (where she does rigorous foot pointing exercises and somehow tames her wig back, kind of). The chick approaches Kidman in the buff with a combination of aggressiveness and openness that makes Nicole Kidman really uncomfortable though I definitely choose to believe that she’s mainly intimidated by bitch’s non-wigged hair.

Fast forward to the school fundraiser where Nicole Kidman switches up her midweight duster coat obsession for a friggin cape IF YOU CAN EVEN and all the harpies are present in their best dresses which could all definitely be worn to the Golden Globes and somehow the interloper is there also in a gown. HOW DARE SHE! THE HARPIES ARE PISSED! So is the vile Donald Sutherland (Nicole Kidman’s dad who just HATES Hugh Grant for reasons unknown). 

But Hugh Grant leaves for a medical conference just as....dun dun dun....the interloper is murdered!!! ALSO NICOLE KIDMAN CAN’T REACH HUGH GRANT. Also he left his cellphone in a random junk drawer! I refuse to believe this magazine apartment has a junk drawer! Kidman’s wig magically stays halfway up without use of pins or elastics because that is just how horrifying this wig is! This show is so stupid!

Episode 2: The Missing

So Hugh Grant is fully on the lam and mainly NOT at that medical conference which may or may no exist but Nicole Kidman is not interested in googling it and that hot interloper remains to be murdered. Also Nicole Kidman’s wig is still a tangle of complete and utter nonsense AS IS THIS SHOW. Also this wig has two settings: dried out desert or oily sweat lodge. This episode starts on sweat lodge. Anyway, Nicole Kidman goes looking around for Hugh Grant and only finds more questions at his hospital and then goes to her job where she is kind of an ineffectual couples counselor. Also David E Kelley/Nicole Kidman prestige HBO shows I guess always require some couples counseling that is highly questionable.

ANYWAY! I forgot to mention that the lead investigator in this murder is Edgar Ramirez who is hot but also kind of shifty. He starts questioning Nicole Kidman about all kinds of crap involving Hugh Grant and then lays down some hard truths: HUGH GRANT SUCKS!!! He got fired from his hospital job curing children’s cancer after he got too close to one of his patients’ moms and DUH IT’S THE HOT INTERLOPER. Nicole Kidman has to gather a calming circle of midweight duster coats to even deal with this new development. 

I really love that Hugh Grant is basically just starring as himself in the mid 90s (REMEMBER DIVINE BROWN?) and I’m kind of here for it. Regardless, Hugh Grant is now the prime suspect in this whole mess and Nicole Kidman’s beautiful magazine apartment is now being completely pulled apart and all she can do is look at her terrifying face and touch it with her terrifying talons and pack up all her midweight duster coats and get the eff out of there. BUT TO WHERE?! 

DUH NICOLE KIDMAN OWNS A BEACH HOUSE OBVS. So she drives out there and is somehow able to braid her damn wig! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE. THE WIG IS VERY UPSET ABOUT IT AS AM I. She and her tangled tiny braid (she has so much hair in that wig - why is the braid so small??) stare out into the ocean a lot and ignore her child. Also new coat alert and this one is PLAID!!!

And then Hugh Grant shows up and is super creepy and chokey. He tries to explain his actions and confirms his affair with hot interloper which is basically just all a plot synopsis of Fatal Attraction but says that he definitely did NOT murder her. WE SHALL SEE ABOUT THAT. Nicole Kidman calls 911 anyway. 

Episode 3: Do No Harm

OMG GUYS THIS EPISODE STARTS WITH EDGAR RAMIREZ SHOWING UP AT NICOLE KIDMAN’S BEACH HOUSE IN A HELICOPTER. How much money is the NYPD really willing to spend on Hugh Grant? All of it? Anyway, Hugh Grant ends up in jail (which is not as fabulous as his prison time in Paddington 2) and we find out that he fathered that baby the hot (murdered) interloper had and willfully breastfed in front of those harpies in episode 1. THIS SHOW IS WILD AND ALSO STUPID.

Speaking of wild and stupid, Nicole Kidman visits Hugh Grant at Rikers and we are led to believe that Rikers Island has a COAT CHECK?!?!?! Look: she shows up in one of her millions of midweight duster coats and in the visiting room she has none. ARE YOU KIDDING ME, SHOW?!?!?! THIS ALSO HAPPENS TWICE BECAUSE THEY CHECK BOTH HER AND HER SON’S COATS THE SECOND TIME WHAT.

Hugh Grant maintains his innocence and somehow Nicole Kidman’s bent ass wig is convinced and they hire a fabulous defense lawyer which the vile Donald Sutherland is none too thrilled about paying for and spends lots of quiet time at the Frick Museum about it also WTF show you’re willing to pay for the Frick and not frickin wigs. Also Nicole Kidman is confronted by the hot interloper’s husband and it does not go over well. No social interactions in this show make any sense, also.

In the end, Nicole Kidman gets ANOTHER midweight duster coat, Edgar Ramirez questions Nicole Kidman AGAIN but this time with video surveillance footage of her walking outside the hot interlopers studio...the night she was murdered and YES IN THAT DAMN CAPE. WAIT WHAT?! Also even in surveillance footage, Nicole Kidman’s wig is a mess.

Episode 4: See No Evil

This episode introduces the idea that Nicole Kidman really likes taking walks. Long walks, nighttime walks, sleepwalks? Nobody knows, especially Nicole Kidman. When asked why she was walking near the murdered interloper’s studio, Nicole Kidman just kinda shrugs and says “I take walks!” AND EVERYONE BELIEVES HER!!! WTF IS THIS SHOW. It should be noted that this long walks are taken in her usual midweight duster coats (WHICH ARE SUBTLY DIFFERENT COLORS AND FABRICS FROM OTHER MIDWEIGHT DUSTER COATS SHE OWNS) and very not sensible boots. Her walks can last between 10 minutes and 10 hours and who is to say where she even goes and who she is followed by? Maybe the interloper’s husband follows her around or maybe it’s in her head? Maybe she murdered the interloper and didn’t quite remember it? Regardless: it’s a lot of walking and it is EXHAUSTING for us all and finally Nicole Kidman just passes out in Central Park after minutes or hours of walking around and a bunch of kids form a literal calming circle around her and my eyes rolled into the reservoir.

This episode is also all about money, hunny! Nicole Kidman has a lot of it - so much that it was revealed in the last episode she didn’t even notice that a lot of it was missing from that time Hugh Grant lost his job and didn’t tell anyone for a few months except the vile Donald Sutherland who loaned him $500K AND NO ONE KNOWS WHERE THAT MONEY WENT!!!! Well I hope you kept your check book out, Donald Sutherland because now you need to pay $2 MILLION DOLLARS to get Hugh Grant out of jail. Ok? OK. ALSO DO YOU JUST OWN THE FRICK MUSEUM????

So now Hugh Grant just lives in his old magazine apartment which has somehow returned to magazine status after Edgar Ramirez and a thousand cops completely ransacked it. Also now Nicole Kidman and the son live at the vile Donald Sutherland’s house so all is...well? Well no not really because Nicole Kidman STILL HAS THAT DAMN WIG. 

AND THAT ISN’T EVEN THE MOST HORRIFYING PART OF THIS EPISODE! That came when Hugh Grant, now free from jail and left to his own devices, visits the interloper’s widow and children! WHAT IS HE DOING!! Somehow, interloper’s husband lets Hugh in and lets him hold the baby which he fathered. AND THEN HUGH REVEALS HE’S MET THIS BABY BEFORE AND OFFERS TO TAKE CARE OF IT! WHILST ON TRIAL FOR MURDER! THIS SHOW!!!!!

Episode 5: Trial by Fury

WHAT IS EVEN DONALD SUTHERLAND’S APARTMENT?!?! It has a balcony, and it seems to have a balcony cover because no one gets wet when they go out on the balcony and it’s raining. Rich people really live in a different climate zone than the rest of us garbage people. Regardless, Nicole Kidman’s frizzy wig is at PEAK FRIZZINESS on this balcony.

Anyway, the trial of the goddamned century is finally here!! And Nicole Kidman’s wig part still remains an elusive mystery. What is being kept in there? NO ONE CAN SEE ACTUAL SCALP OR ANSWERS. Another question: why did everyone bring their kids to the trial where they could see very upsetting pictures (that I didn’t even look at!) of the murdered interloper. CHILD ABUSE! ALSO! WOULD EVERY SINGLE GODDAMNED CABLE NEWS NETWORK REALLY COVER THIS CASE SO CLOSELY??? I guess it’s not an election year in this alternate reality.

Which makes this scene where the whole family dines out and no one bothers them at all the more improbable. Also completely insane? At one point, Hugh Grant just storms out of the dinner and into the bar area of the restaurant (omg remember restaurants?) and Nicole Kidman follows him there and they have a very intense conversation about family secrets literally in the entrance of a busy restaurant. WHAT REALITY IS THIS SHOW IN?!?!?! The family secret? Remember that time Nicole Kidman told their son that he couldn’t have a dog because Hugh Grant accidentally killed his family dog? IT WASN’T A DOG IT WAS HIS 4 YEAR OLD SISTER. WHAT IN THE DAMN HELL!!!!

Nicole Kidman attempts to corroborate this insane story that she has never ever heard before with Hugh Grant’s family who don’t return her calls but do facetime her out of the blue in the middle of the night. Sure! And who is Hugh Grant’s mom? TONY AWARD WINNING ACTRESS ROSEMARY GODDAMNED HARRIS. WHAT. Not only does she confirm that Hugh Grant definitely accidentally killed his sister, but he also was never ever upset by it! Sure looks like Hugh Grant is a sociopath! MMkay!

Oh and then in the final moments of this episode Nicole Kidman finds the murder weapon - a sculpting hammer - in her son’s violin case. THIS SHOW IS A FRIGGIN LUNATIC.

Episode 6 - The Bloody Truth

So at this point in this show, I have fully gone. I don’t even know what is real or fantasy at this point: all I know is that Nicole Kidman’s wig is my nightmare. ALSO! She has a new midweight duster coat and it is the absolute most outrageous - a silk embroidered number you can literally wear NOWHERE EXCEPT FOR THE MURDER TRIAL OF HUGH GRANT.

The main concern in this episode is how Nicole Kidman’s son happened to get ahold of the murder weapon. So he just found it....in the beach house fire pit?!?!?! WHAT A DUMB PLACE TO PUT A MURDER WEAPON WHEN YOU HAVE AN OCEAN INCHES AWAY TO FLING IT INTO! Even dumber: this show wants you to believe that this 12 year old kid would have the wherewithall to put this murder weapon through the dishwasher - TWICE!! Vulture and I both say NAH to that. 

Anyway, Nicole Kidman’s wig which is somehow pushed back with clips unknown spends a lot of time in a robe (or a coat? WHO KNOWS AT THIS POINT) making secret phone calls to Lily Rabe (who I am happy is back because she’s kind of the only fun part of this show). WHAT IS NICOLE KIDMAN UP TO?!?!?!

Much like Big Little Lies season 2, it all comes down to Nicole Kidman taking the stand. BORING! Hugh Grant is all but gonna win this thing and then Nicole Kidman gets up there and totally backs him up...until she is cross examined by the prosecuting attorney (WHO IS OLD PALS WITH LILY RABE) and magically knows all about Rosemarry Harris’s facetime! Now everyone knows that Hugh Grant is a child murderer and sociopath! AND HE IS PISSED!

The final sequence of this show is just far too insane to even fathom BUT basically before definitely being found guilty, Hugh Grant texts his son and they meet for breakfast but then breakfast turns into a car chase upstate! It is never explained how Nicole Kidman would allow her son out of her sight OR how Hugh Grant wouldn’t already be tailed by cops but whatever! Also not explained: how Nicole Kidman is able to issue an Amber alert for her kid and then get into a GODDAMNED HELICOPTER and follow Hugh Grant north and then land on the very bridge he’s about to jump off of but WHO CARES!! THIS WHOLE SHOW IS WHO CARES BECAUSE IT TURNS OUT HUGH GRANT WAS THE MURDERER ALL ALONG JUST LIKE WE THOUGHT IN EPISODE 1 AND EVERYTHING ELSE HAS JUST BEEN A MIDWEIGHT DUSTER COAT FASHION SHOW!!! ALSO THE WIG SUCKED! GOODBYE YOU TERRIBLE STUPID SHOW! 

Verdict: Doesn’t Wurq

Okay okay okay, I really wanted to talk abt this for a hot sec bc honestly? I just got one of these stuffed animals two days ago and its been the best sensory stuffy ever to me and i wanna share it???

Do you like hugging stuffed animals, like downright squishing and holding and petting them? Do you like soft slowrise squishies? Do you like really, really soft material, and are very very particular about that certain type of soft? Do you like squishing your face into plushies when resting or trying to feel and dislike resistance?? Is soft foam okay? Do you like cute little animal themed blobs??

Then!! Maybe!! Maybe maybe maybe!! These plushies called Squishmallows might be for you? Im no seller, im not advocate, or insurer of quality, but like?? I just wanna allow pple to be aware of their existance?? Heck i got mine from sixflags y’feel me?

I haven’t been able to put my little medium sized cat down, and he’s the perfect size to rest in my arms and squeeze!! Not too heavy, or anything! I rarely find a plushie that i want more than one of, because plushies are usually the type of soft that feels good, but will be known to lose its softness overtime. But squishmallows?? Idk, their fabric is different somehow and it doesn’t feel that way. Maybe im just overexcited and hyperfixated and maybe my views will change as I hold onto this lil guy for longer, but like. It feels like an oversized uber soft stim toy?? At least, to me it does. Like, idk.

So uh, maybe look up squishmallows?? They’ve even got little versions to my knowledge, tho i can’t vouch for how soft they might be, and v big ones too! Maybe you’ll end up loving them, maybe you’ll hate the texture, everyone’s different!

Final evaluation

At the beginning of the project, I explored more abstracted themes around ‘Wonderland’ with my creative photoshoots focusing on mirrors and inner reflection. After conducting a character analysis of Alice, I wanted to create a garment for her reflecting her personality traits, animals she meets, things she experiences and how this influences her.

 I was greatly influenced by Tim Walker’s White Rabbit photoshoot for Vogue Italia where the models are wearing over-sized rabbit heads (1). This made me look at the novel and the different characters Alice meets in more depth - leading me to create illustrations (2), a clay model (3) and eventually the tissue and wire mask seen in the final photos. I wanted the head piece to have more of a distorted feel instead of Disney-style “cute” rabbit. I researched the masks used in the 1973 ‘The Wicker Man’ (4) and how these added to the story line. Following along from this, I looked at artwork by Paula Rego’s ‘War’ (5) depicting human-like rabbits. This really helped me with the scale and the contoured look for the head piece as well as how it could be constructed. 

When looking at possible silhouettes, colours palettes and construction methods, I came across costumes used in performance - including costumes by Georgia de Chirico in the play ‘Ball’ (6) from 1929 and the 1966 televised version of ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ (7). I really like both of these sets of costumes because of their block colouring. I incorporated this aspect into my final piece and illustrations by having the panels over the hips continuing into the trouser legs.

I also looked into the organic and nature aspect of Wonderland. Looking at flints (8) found in the fields surrounding my home helped for colouring and texture as well as sculptures by Peter Gentenaar (9) . He creates amazing, twisted pieces by creating a structure using bamboo and tissue paper. I wanted to use this method to create my sleeves - I used dope, modelling tissue and strimmer wire (10). However, this did not have the outcome I was after, so I manipulated fabric and used plastic boning instead to create a similar look.

 

Maths, Religion and Science - I developed my pattern cutting and construction method using mathematical working and calculations. I also looked into the darker aspect of Wonderland by watching a TED talk about Conscious Reality and how the brain processes our own reality, what calculation the brain makes to perceive it and how this relates to religious ideas of an afterlife. This links to Wonderland because of Alice’s experience and how this could be interpreted as either something that happens to her consciously or unconsciously in a dream.

I chose to focus on costume design, making, pattern cutting and dyeing. I picked these to focus on as I have not yet done a project with very complex pattern cutting, fitting and precision and really wanted to push myself. I chose dyeing as part of my project because I really enjoyed the process of printing my own fabric for the Inside Out project and the different effects I can make. This links very closely to my future plans as I want to do Costume Construction at university.

In the exploration stage of the project, I looked at the ‘Pool of Tears’ chapter from Alice in Wonderland. This led me into looking at how to make the fabric look wet and heavy without actually being that. I experimented with resin to give this look and it worked very well. I really wanted to include this sampling in my final piece but as my design developed this looked out of place with the overall aesthetic. I also sampled fabric manipulation techniques and dope/modelling paper to give the idea of expanding and contracting (as Alice does in size).

                                                                                                                                                                                      

 

Overall view on outcome- broken down.

The colour palette – when deciding the colour palette for my overall look, I took a lot of inspiration from what Alice would see when falling down the rabbit hole. I used earthy tones - like the golden brown and greens - as an enhanced vision of nature, going into the more pastel colours of what I imagine Wonderland would have as you look up the costume.

In this project, I really focused on the pattern cutting, fitting and accuracy (12). I chose to do curved strips over the waist and creating a V shape in the centre front in order to exaggerate the waist and, with the under structures, help give a distorted figure shape. I found it difficult to get the point in the centre front even and continue the line accurately over the hips. This shape was inspired by James Charles 1940’s clothing (11) I decided to tell the story of ‘Absolem’ the caterpillar who helped Alice. This is shown by the stripes at the waist; they are thinner here representing his segmented body and wider at the bottom symbolising his growth into a butterfly.

I wanted to include pleated shapes down the legs on the light green side panel (13). However, when I tried to create these they did not work as I wanted them to, and I had to improvise. I hand dyed and made 60 flower shapes and hand sewed these over the hips whilst keeping the stripes visible. I chose the pastel colours pink, blue, purple and green as this is what I imagine Wonderland would have looked like before the Red Queen had all the flowers painted red. (14)

The colours used for the bodice were inspired by Disney’s animated version of Wonderland that most people associate with Alice. I used the white on the bodice to represent her curiosity and her youth. This also harks back to the original illustration -by John Tennial- of her white apron (15). As this costume additionally reflects characters Alice meets and her character development, this also resembles the white rabbit and the Queens servants who were painting the white roses red.

On the bodice, I wanted to include petal-like shapes. I used batik methods and hand dyed this piece. I originally wanted to dye them the same colour as the sleeves however something went unexpectedly in the dyeing process and created this turquoise colour (16). I am really pleased that this happened as this resulting tone linked the greens in the trousers to the blues in the sleeves. Having this on the front of the bodice really tied the whole costume together as before the bodice and trousers look very separate and not cohesive. I really like how the colour transitions from white to pale turquoise, growing out from the bodice.

For the sleeves, I tried lots of different techniques such as constructing a frame using tissue paper and dope inspired by Peter Gentenaar. However, this did not work in the way I wanted it to, so I resorted to using fabric manipulation. I dyed the white cotton using the dry ice and batik method to create different tones. As this is her most well know colour, I used the blue tones to represent Alice. I was very drawn to this colour and the idea of falling down a rabbit hole and different layers of the earth you would see. When out on a walk, I found blue Anglican flint and I really loved the texture and colours and included this into the sleeves. Another reason I chose this colour was to reflect her ‘Pool of Tears’ and the power of imagination.

To complete my costume, I created a mask from wire and tissue paper. I drew inspiration from Tim Walker’s photography from the ‘White Rabbit’ photoshoot for Vogue Italia where he used oversized animal’s heads. I started this process by drawing rabbit illustrations and developing this into a 3D clay model which I used as a basis for my final mask. I really like how the mask captures the white rabbit ambiance without being too cute/”Disney” and is instead darker and dream-like. I find this very effective as the White rabbit starts her journey and almost traps her in the world of Wonderland.

Overall, in my opinion my final outcome is very effective as I capture the dreamlike quality of Wonderland, with an uneasy feel. If I were doing this at college, I think my time management would be much better as I finished the garment 5 days late. I would have spent less time on the mock-ups and fitting but I feel this was necessary to complete my garment.  I would have also included different print techniques and maybe a form of metal work or vacuum forming that I could not do from home. However, if I completed this project at college, I would not have made this outcome as I have now. I am very happy with what I have achieved. If I were to make this again, I would fix the bodice as the white cotton was a bit larger than the interlining layer causing wrinkling across the chest. I would also have built in a form of structure to the bodice to bring the waist in more and to avoid the wrinkling at either side. I would change the back fastening to something strong and be more innovative with that to have a flush finish.

I would really like to improve my time management in the future and make a schedule that is more realistic but still pushing myself. Going forward into the next project I want to work on using a wide range of skills and different approaches and design I could use to create a better outcome.

The windows were frosted over on the outside, and snow beat against your roof. The darkness outside had descended so early tonight, and it made you sleepy.

The fire crackled in the brick hearth a few feet away from where you lay, snuggled into your blue velvet couch in your favorite pajamas. The soft texture of the fabric on your skin and the warmth of the fire radiating toward you were lulling you in and out of light sleep. Your tired eyes were fluttering; you were enjoying the bit of rest you had to yourself. Your back and feet hadn’t hurt in a while, and your warm dinner had filled you happily.

“Love?” Van asked, slithering his body behind yours on the couch and resting his hand over your stomach. The other hand ran softly through the strands of your hair.

“Mmm,” you hummed in response, snuggling up closer to him and enjoying the safe feeling of him pressed up against you.

“You sleepy already? It’s just now five o’clock.”

You burrowed your head against the couch cushion and mumbled a soft response. “When you’re pregnant, you can do anything you want.”

“I can’t argue with that,” he softly laughed, and pressed a kiss right behind your ear. It sent a tingle down your spine. “I thought you might like to know I’ve thrown some cookie dough in the oven. They’ll be ready in ---” he checked his watch behind your head, “--- exactly two minutes.”

“Dear god, how did I get so lucky,” you said as you turned around on the couch to face him, and kissed his cheek. The corners of his mouth turned up slightly, and he helped you sit up, despite you only being three months pregnant. Van walked into the kitchen backwards, pulling you by your hand, orange glow from the fire cast on his face.

Sitting there at the kitchen table eating warm, gooey cookies with Van struck a warm chord in you; it reminded you of your first date with him. He had stood there at your doorstep, snow in his hair, rubbing his ice cold hands together so they wouldn’t shake when he looked you in the eye. He’d taken you to a nice dinner at an upscale restaurant in London, made you laugh so hard you teared up, and afterward, he’d held your hand and walked you down the watery streets lined in Christmas lights. Car lights and shop windows reflected neon at your feet, and the lights around you shined brightly in his eyes as he leaned down to peck your cold lips with his for the first time. When the snowy streets’ concrete coldness had crept into your bones, Van had whirled you both into a small corner shop, and bought you as many warm cookies as he could carry in his hands. He’d thrown them down onto a set of napkins he’d strewn across the diner-style table, and slid across from you in the booth, and helped you devour the delicious sugary pile with the widest, most playful grin.

He had that same playful grin on his face now as he watched you silently recount the memory.

“What?” he asked around a mouthful of cookie in that happy, flirtatious voice of his.

“Just… I love you,” you said, stepping off your chair to come wrap your arms around his waist, your rings almost getting snagged in his black sweater.

“I love you too,” he whispered into your hair.

“Can ya bring me a ladder, Van?”

“Fuck no, there’s no fucking way you’re getting on a ladder,” he said, lowly, as he attached a few sparkly red ornaments higher than you could reach on the silver tinsel tree.

“But I want to put the star on!” you whined, plopping down on the sofa, absentmindedly staring at the fire twirl and twist in the hearth. After a few moments between that and watching Van silently load red, blue, silver ornaments onto the tree, you sighed. He turned his head and looked at you pointedly, urging you to speak.

“It’s my tradition,” you said softly, sadly. You got off the sofa, and went to the kitchen. You ate a cookie left over from a few days ago while you dejectedly prepared some hot chocolate with salted caramel, yours and Van’s favorite. You knew it was just pregnant hormones making you upset; but then again, what you feel in a moment is what you feel. So in that moment, you felt sad.

While you were waiting for the almond milk to heat on the stove, Christmas music started playing through the speakers in the other room; Van’s doing. Hearing the little bells jingling and the upbeat music turned your mood to a lighter, happier one. You definitely married the right man.

Two mugs of piping hot chocolate in hand, you carefully walked back into the living room to deliver to Van. He had covered most of the tree in ornaments now, and was doing an adorable little wiggle to the music as he darted around the tree to hang them.  

Van took the hot mugs from you and set them on the end table to cool, and then held your hands, warmed by the mugs, in his.

“Ms. McCann, oh, and little McCann -- care to dance?” he asked (the both of you apparently), and you nodded, smiling coyly at his unnecessary chivalry.

You couldn’t help but snicker as he began to lightheartedly dance with you. He swayed his hips as he moved closer to you, and twirled you around. Those were his two dance moves. Hip sway to the left, hip sway to the right, a little wiggle, and a twirl. A coquettish grin plastered to his face, always.

The song changed to a slower one, and he broke away from holding your hands to wrap you to his chest. Your belly poked his, and he had to lean forward a little farther to hug you fully. You both swayed against each other, just enjoying the company, while Van rubbed circles into your back. Suddenly, he spoke up.

“How ‘bout I go get the ladder, but ya have to promise me that you’ll let me spot you and that ya won’t reach out too far and fall on the tree and die? Or fall backward into the fireplace and die? Or --”

Your eyes rose to meet his, and you cut him off. “Deal.”

“I was gonna wait til Christmas to give ya these, but I figured if I did, we wouldn’t get to enjoy ‘em,” Van said when he entered your bedroom a couple of weeks after that, just days before Christmas.

Your eyes brightened at the mention of a gift.

“Yeah, yeah, I know I said I wouldn’t let ya open anything, but this is a different kind of gift.”

He held a box out to you, wrapped pristinely in newspaper with a big red bow. You couldn’t wait to tear it open.

You put it on your lap, and reached around your small baby bump to unravel the ribbon. The paper crinkled and fell to the floor, and you reached inside the box.

One little concert ticket framed, and on the back, Van’s handwriting: “Your first Catfish concert. 20XX.”

One small disc of baked white clay, with the imprint of a key, and Van’s handwriting: “Our first house. 20XX.”

And one small frame with a tiny print of the ultrasound photo you’d received last week, and on the back, Van’s handwriting: “Our first baby. 20XX.”

Your mouth had fallen open by the time you got through each item in the box. Van, who had sat next to you, held you in a one-arm hug.

“Ornaments, for the tree, see,” he said, pointing to the holes he’d made in the tops of each.

“This is….”

“I know, I did amazin’,” and with his flirty comment, you rolled your eyes and half-scoffed, half-laughed, and led him out of the room to put the ornaments on your tree.

“My bump is really showing now,” you whispered, a little unsatisfied with your appearance as you stared at your stomach in the mirror. Even under a flowing black dress, you could tell. You ran your hands along its contours, feeling the hard skin beneath, wishing it could go away just for the holiday party.

“You okay in here?” Van questioned as he entered the closet, tucking his shirt into his pants with his belt half-on. He stopped mid-tuck and stood straight. “Y/N?”

“I feel so… gross. Disfigured.”

“W-- No, Y/N, you’re beautiful. Incredibly beautiful. Look at you!” He turned you around to face the mirror from the front, and he stood behind you. He pointed to your bump. “That’s our baby in there! We did that!”

“Yeah.”

He put both his hands around you and rested them on the bump. The warmth radiated from his hands, and you sighed. And then, a thump. Just under his right hand.

“Y/N? Was that --?” His eyes bulged, and he looked over your shoulder at his hands and your belly.

“Oh my god. A kick?” Your eyes started watering. Another thump, in a similar spot. You both gasped.

“Gonna be a good footy player, yeah?” he sniffed, and settled his chin into the crook between your neck and shoulder. You felt one of Van’s tears roll down your exposed shoulder, and let him hold you. You both waited for another kick, but it didn’t come.

“We’re probably going to be late to the Christmas party,” you whispered, breaking the anticipatory silence.

“We have the best excuse,” Van said reverently, wiping his eyes and standing straight again to finish up his outfit. “You let me know if he does it again,” he called.

“We don’t know if it’s a boy or girl yet!” you yelled back to him, now somewhere far in the house.

“Whoever they are, they’re gonna play football!”

When you settled into the car next to Van, the warm fuzzy feeling was still very much there.

As soon as you’d stepped through the door, oohs and aahs at how much your belly had grown since your friends and family had last seen you made you feel a little uncomfortable, but Van had gone on to say something like “ain’t she the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen?” or “she’s got the mother glow!” after each and every comment. You couldn’t appreciate his support more.

“D’you know if it’s a boy or girl yet?” Larry asked the two of you after he handed Van’s parents drinks on the way to the table you were sitting at.

“Nope, but Van thinks it’s going to be a football player regardless,” you said back, and Van smiled.

“We felt the little thing kick today. Just before we left,” he recounted to Larry, and kissed your temple. He was so proud.

“That’s amazing! I’m happy for you,” Larry said with a genuine smile. “And Y/N, you look great.” You couldn’t believe you were afraid to leave the house earlier. At the party, you were fawned over by both of your parents, all of your friends, and the rest of your families. The joint celebration you’d decided to have was “the best idea in the entire universe,” according to Van’s cousin.

The party was a hoot, full of the people you loved being as merry as could be. You all told stories about each other in conversation, and eventually, you piped up when Bernie reminded the group of Van’s penchant for good music since he was a kid.

“You know, ever since we’ve been married, Van’s always sung everywhere we’ve gone. And at sometimes it has been completely annoying… Sorry love… but it’s a true joy. I didn’t know how much I could love music until I met Van. And I didn’t know how much I could love Van until he used that music to sing to the baby.”

Everyone “aww”-ed at that line. Van smirked.

“Recently, at night if Van’s bored, he sits at his desk and writes lullabies for the baby. And then he’ll come to me wherever I am -- probably the couch reading a book, or in the bath, also reading a book -- and he’ll set up camp next to me. He’ll play his guitar and sing ‘loud enough for the baby to hear,’ as he says, but as soon as I swat at him and tell him he’s bothering me, he’ll come up close and whisper to my stomach. Something like ‘mum’s a little irritated with us right now, so let’s be a tad quieter, shall we?’ and I chuckle and pretend to be upset still, but there’s nothing more special than watching him sing softly to my belly. And when he’s done he’ll just tell it about his day, or how much he loves me, and honestly, it melts my heart.”

“Bernie did the same to Van! He’d have music on constantly for him. But let me tell you, as soon as Van popped out, that music ability was transferred immediately. Talk about banging on pots and pans, chasing the boy around to keep him out of the cabinets, having to fight him for volume control on every sound device, and listening to him scream-sing at the top of his lungs constantly. Phew! What a handful for just two people,” Mary laughed, and rubbed her son’s shoulder. Everyone chuckled, and more stories were passed.

But you stayed uncharacteristically silent for the rest of the party until it was time to say goodbye.

“I don’t know if I can do it,” you whisper to break the silence on the car ride back home.

“Do what?” Van asked, though he’d already sensed what you were on about. You’d been quiet since Mary had spoken to you about baby Van.

“The parenting thing,” you said, rocking a little in your seat as Van pulled the car into the drive. You gathered your gloves and forewent the jacket considering you’d be in the house in a bit. “You had a reputation of being crazy as hell as a child, Van. And I have no doubt that this kid’s going to have at least part of that crazy. I don’t know if I can do all this by myself when you’re on tour.”

You knew you’d hit a tiny nerve in Van when you said that, but it was a valid fear. He took a deep breath and parked the car.

“We’re gonna be great, love,” he said, pulling the key from the ignition and running around the car to retrieve you from the passenger side. He helped you out of the car, and you sighed at how heavy your belly was starting to feel. You staggered into the house, careful of the ice on the sidewalk, under his wing.

You both took off your boots and left them at the front door; he closed it hurriedly behind you, trying not to let the cold air in. You stopped, looked up at him, and spoke again.

“Despite the holiday cheer and all that, which is a great distraction by the way… I’m scared.”

He gestured around to the fireplace, warm and bright; the Christmas tree, lights twinkling, and filled with ornaments of love; all the unwashed cookie sheets and chocolate mugs and plates in the sink; heavy blankets thrown over the couch in a nest; holiday cards sent by tons of friends and family; wet snowy shoes piled right at the door. And two people who were very, very concerned for their first child.

“I know you are, Y/N, but, honestly….look how much love is in this house.”

Three Non-Cliché Valentine's Night-Out Looks That Don't Involve Red or Pink

Dare you not to fall in love with these looks!

Fashion is our Valentine.

When you think of Valentine's Day, you probably think of hearts, flowers, chocolates, and perhaps even this.

Another thing that probably comes to mind is the traditional Valentine's color scheme of red and pink -- colors that are meant to represent love, and that tend to appear a lot in fashion meant for the holiday.

While lots of people -- myself included -- love wearing these colors on Valentine's Day, you must admit that they're a little predictable at this point.

That's why I decided to challenge myself to see if I could come up with three cute and fun V-Day night-out looks that don't feature either red or pink at all, and that would still look appropriate for the occasion whether you're spending it with a date, a long-time significant other, or your best friends.

Outfit #1

Although green is definitely not a color that we tend to associate with Valentine's Day, I couldn't resist this elegant forest green midi dress, as its silhouette is so classy and sophisticated, and would look lovely for a special V-Day dinner date at a romantic restaurant.

I decided to style it with a pair of chunky kitten-heel slingback pumps whose lilac color contrasts just enough with the dress's deep green hue to add an unexpected pop.

As well, I added a trendy brown croc-effect cross-body bag for a dose of texture that nicely complements the rest of the look. 

Lastly, because every Valentine's Day outfit should have a bit of sparkle and shine, I decided to add a pair of adorable heart-shaped hoop earrings, a pretty bracelet set, a modern solitaire necklace necklace (on a super-cool chain, to boot), and a multi-colored pearl ring to complete this gorgeous ensemble.

Like Look #1, Look #2 would be great for a more traditional Valentine's date; however, it would also work really well for a slightly less traditional V-Day activity, such as going out to a trendy party, bar, or club (if you're of age for the latter two) with friends.

As far as I'm concerned, jumpsuits are one of the most underrated going-out pieces; not only do they look fierce, they're also so easy to throw on and go! Plus, they always manage to make the wearer stand apart from the crowd in the best way possible!

Here, I've picked out a sweet-but-daring navy blue jumpsuit made from a velvety fabric and featuring a cute glitter dot print.

I decided to take the sparkly/shiny theme and run with it by adding a black glitter chain-strap clutch and a pair of glam gold heeled sandals.

To finish off the look, I added a statement cuff bracelet and a dainty moon-and-stars necklace, as well as a pair of small hoop earrings with dangly glimmering stones.

Furthermore, while I primarily envisioned this look being worn for a night out with friends, it could be worn on a more laid-back date as well.

I chose to style a flowy long-sleeved blouse with a cool pair of leather pants next, I added a pair of pointed-toe, skinny-heeled ankle boots, which are the perfect 2000s throwback. 

In terms of bags, I really like the cool metal details on this black crossbody style, as they add a little something different to the look.

Finally, for jewelry, I decided to go for a more romantic (but still edgy!) vibe with faux-pearl earrings studded with tiny gold-colored circles and crystals -- as well as a chunky heart ring and a sparkly choker.

Just Right: 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T

The design of the Challenger is now 14 years old, and it’s a canvass for many owners to modify. Ray Oslowski has taken a subtle approach, adding a vinyl top and chrome accents to Michael Castiglione’s now timeless and iconic design with a cool, totally retro 1970s vibe.

Walking among the more than 2,000 cars displayed at this spring’s LX Fest, one could not help but be impressed by the width and breath of the ways that 2008-2019 Dodge Challenger owners have modified their cars. Some cars on display were essentially stock while other were over the top, riding in gigantic rolling stock and sporting wild paint and graphic schemes. So how does one stand out in such a field and catch the eyes of Mopar Muscle’s editors?

Sometime less is truly more, and a car sporting understated modifications is all that’s needed. That’s the case with this Inferno Red 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T owned by Ray Oslowski, president of the NorCal Challenger Club, of which has spawned several chapters covering Northern California and Western Nevada.

Ray has the typical car guy resume. He started working on cars with his uncle when he was just 15. “He helped me pinstripe and taught me the proper way to detail a car,” recalls Ray. “My first car was a red 1988 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z at age 16. In my 20s, I restored two different 1969 Plymouth Road Runners. In my 30s, I was into rock crawling on the Rubicon Trail and restored a 1974 Toyota FJ-40. In my 40s, I returned to my muscle cars roots — only this time with modern muscle, my 2010 Dodge Challenger. I purchased the car in November 2011 with 10,000 miles on it. I actually went to the dealer to purchase a different Challenger, but they made me a much better deal on this Inferno Red beauty. Over the years, I have traveled twice from Sacramento to Pomona for Spring Fest as well as cruising to Yosemite National Park several times, which is my father/daughter trip every year. I have drag raced it twice, and I have also driven it twice on a closed road course. It gets driven as currently the odometer shows just over 60,000 miles.”

What caught our eye when we walked every row at Spring Fest was not only the black vinyl top, but the chrome accents that made the car pop. Ray explains, “Early on I decided to go with the classic chrome theme. I bought rolls of chrome trim in several different sizes with double-stick tape from a local store that supplies the body shop trade. I applied it in the locations found on the original 1970-1974 Challengers. I talked about the black top for several years until my lovely wife bought the materials for me for my birthday last year. I wanted the full roof, pillars, and all. I also wanted the vinyl to have a faux leather texture like the original tops. Premier Auto Tint in El Dorado Hills, east of Sacramento, found this brand-new product and applied it to my car. I used the chrome on the seam of the red paint and the vinyl. I also put the Pentastar emblem on the passenger-side front, as all classic Mopar muscle cars had back in the 1960s and 1970s.” As fans of classic Mopar muscle, touches like this show an attention to detail that connects Challengers of both eras together.

The designer of the 2006 Dodge Challenger Concept, Michael “Casti” Castiglione is a long-time friend of author Richard Truesdell and the pair stay in contact via Facebook. When the original 2006 Challenger Concept came about, Michael worked at Chrysler’s Pacifica Advance design studio north of San Diego, working with the legendary Freeman Thomas. Rich asked Michael what he thought of Ray’s personalization efforts and here’s what he had to say: “I agree this color combo looks really cool. This has sort of a retro vinyl top look. The chrome at the base of the pillar is just like my ’67 Camaro. I’ll admit though, even on my car I would prefer it all one color instead of the two-tone. I’d like to see this one in person some day. Unfortunately, I missed LX Fest because of a family reunion. Hope to hit it next year.” Back in 2008, just before the release of the production 2008 Dodge Challenger, Rich interviewed Michael on the design evolution of the Challenger concept. The other element of Ray’s modification path that caught our eye are the selection of his wheels. “The wheels were added when I did the Brembo Brake conversion,” says Ray. “I chose 2015 Hellcat replica wheels in chrome. I had chrome wheels on it before also. I ended up selecting these because they were a factory-type wheel, and Dodge never offered them in chrome making them more unique.”

The other tweaks are equally subtle, nothing over the top and typical on what are found on many modern-day Challengers. They include a billet dress-up kit for the larger pieces. Ray also used chrome trim on the engine cover and cut extra vents in it as well. He added an Eibach lowering kit, dropping it 2 inches, which might be what helps to pull everything together, He added Scat Pack antisway bars with adjustable endlinks along with installing a Mopar front strut tower brace. The complete exhaust is all SRT including headers. The rear end and axles are also converted to SRT. Ray fabricated the custom grille himself. The final touches included tinted taillights, tinted windows, and a cold air intake.

Ray is an active member of the modern Challenger community. He’s the president of NorCal Challenger Club as well as the vice president of the Team Red Challengers International and the chapter captain of Challenger Demons. He shows the car extensively at local events and has attended Mopars in the Park on multiple occasions and has made the journey to Pomona twice for Spring Fest.

With his wife, Theresa, their enthusiasm for Challengers is infectious. At Spring Fest we started talking about Norcal Challengers and asked Ray if he thought he could get a group of NorCal Challenger Club members together for a sunrise photoshoot Sunday, before the group headed back to the Bay Area for the long trip home. Ray was able to get six members to show up 30 minutes before sunrise, and we were able to get a group shot (see sidebar), documented on video, and posted on the NorCal Challengers Facebook page by club Vice President Mika Whitfield.

When asked what he wanted to say to Mopar Muscle readers seeing this feature, here’s what Ray had to say: “I have been into Mopars since I was 16. I am a self-taught mechanic and have a good knowledge about the modern Challenger. Every mod done to this car aside from applying the black top was done by me. The Challenger was the only choice for me. I never even test-drove or looked at a Mustang or Camaro before buying my Challenger. For me, it’s Mopar or no car!

Ray was kind enough to get six members of the NorCal Challengers Club out of bed for a Sunday morning group shot following LX Fest.

2018 Range Rover Velar V-6 First Drive: What is Hiding in Range Rover’s New Luxury SUV?

We’ve just finished lunching on locally caught fried white fish, reindeer stew with mashed potatoes, and freshly picked strawberries with cream at a little cafe with a stunning 270-degree view of the fjords below. The whole setup is, as the kids say these days, “Norwegian af.” In the winter, this joint serves as a warming hut for a local ski resort, and getting here involved crisscrossing up a mile and half of steep, rock-strewn switchbacks. On a brisk day in January, it would be exhilarating to blast down on a set of skis. Today, we’re glad to be swaddled in the all-new Range Rover Velar, equipped with height-adjustable air suspension and hill-descent control. “Hullo, do you mind if I join you for the ride down?” asks the chipper PR rep with a smile and posh London accent sparkly enough for three Orbitz gum commercials. Of course the answer is yes, so in she hops in and introduces herself with a laugh. “It’s quite confusing, really. My name is Mercedes, but do you know how awkward that is in this business? Especially when you have to ring people up and say, ‘Hi, this is Mercedes, of Jaguar Land Rover.’ ” It’s giggles and the crunch of rock under rubber the whole way down. Velar also seems to be a puzzling name for this all-new fourth model in the Range Rover line, but there is precedent. When developing the original Range Rover, Land Rover engineers dubbed the prototype Velar, from the Latin word for “to cover, hide.” That makes sense for a secret prototype, and it does roll off the tongue quite luxuriously (with emphasis on the first syllable), but is Range Rover hiding something? Not if you ask the engineers. Chief body engineer Rob Scott is up front about the platform and engine sharing between Velar and the Jaguar F-Pace. Both are built on the same line at the Solihull, England, factory that gave birth to the Land Rover brand, now owned by the Jaguar Land Rover group. The Velar launches with six aluminum-intensive, direct-injection inline-four and V-6 engines developed in-house at JLR. For North America, there are two turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinders on offer: a 180-horsepower diesel or a 247-horsepower gas engine. The current top of the range is the 380-horsepower supercharged V-6 gas engine that powers our fjord explorer. “This is the most road-oriented Range Rover ever developed,” Scott says. It’s a claim we partially validated along the always stunning, occasionally harrowing byways that tickle the west coast of Norway. The majority of roads we drive are single-lane in each direction and often narrow for sharing in curvy, forested parts between towns. With some form of water on the ground most of the year, giant Scania trucks lumbering around blind corners, and strict enforcement of traffic laws, Norwegian speed limits are low and not for flouting. A limit-handling evaluation will have to wait, but at first blush, the Velar feels good, familiar. We loved F-Pace’s mix of sport and civility enough to nearly name it 2017 SUV of the Year, and the Velar comports itself in similar fashion but with more attention focused on smoothing out bumps, rounding off hard edges, and creating a “calm sanctuary.” This a tough assignment for our First Edition Velar, which comes shod in 22-inch wheels and low-profile tires, but credit goes to the aluminum-intensive double-A-arm front and multilink rear suspension, continuously variable adaptive dampers, and optional air suspension. The Velar’s neatest trick is how thoroughly it cloaks all its technology; although there are multiple drive modes on offer—tunable electric power steering response, a brake-based torque vectoring system, and an electronic locking rear differential—they are mostly invisible until fiddled with. Range Rover claims a 4,471-pound curb weight for the V-6 Velar and that it will hit 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, which is all very believable. Our V-6 Velar is always a willing partner; no matter the on-road mode selected (Comfort, Eco, Dynamic, or Race), all 332 lb-ft of torque felt readily available via distant thumps of the ZF eight-speed transmission. Popping back the left downshift paddle gets things going fractionally quicker, but the right foot covers most situations. That said, the V-6 Velar is not a head-snapping wolf in a fitted wool suit. There is plenty left to hone a sharper-edged, more track-focused SVR Velar. After thoroughly trouncing a series of man-made obstacles, including wheel articulation ramps, a curved side slope, and a hill climb and then charging triumphantly up a groomed off-road course, we ask the opinion of Land Rover expert Steve Hoare. For someone who spends his weekdays editing Alloy and Grit, a Land Rover enthusiast publication, and his weekends tending to five Land Rovers ranging from a 1949 Series 1 to a 2003 Discovery 2 (all pre–independent suspension and electronic aids, mind you), he is remarkably charitable. We both agree that traction and forward progress are never an issue; the off-road modes in Range Rover’s Terrain Response 2 system, programs such as Low Traction Launch and All Terrain Progress Control (a low-speed off-road cruise-control setting), and that height-adjustable air suspension take nearly all of the drama out of climbing hill and dale. All one really has to do is steer and thumb speeds up or down. But Hoare does dismiss the Velar’s handling of a fundamental off-road principle: outward visibility. “All Land Rovers used to be known for their ‘Command’ seating position,” Hoare says. The Velar’s more road-focused “Sports-Command” driving position and high beltline style mean the driver sits low, with a broad expanse of hood to peer over. Scott respectfully disagrees, arguing that the power-adjustable seats and voluminous headroom allow most drivers to sit as high up as necessary. To further address visibility concerns, Range Rover does make the views from the Velar’s four parking-aid cameras available while four-wheeling. But Velar’s launch story isn’t really about on- or off-road prowess—it’s about design. Even though their wheelbases are the same at 113.1 inches, the Velar shares no exterior body panels with the F-Pace. Its hood, fenders, and roof are made from aluminum, and the rear hatch is composite—all in the name of weight savings. Doors are steels to help with side impacts and the architectural look chief designer Gerry McGovern was after. Unlike the curvy and muscular F-Pace, the Velar is smooth and slabby—less sculpted in the gym, more hewn from solid billet. We’ve just finished lunching on locally caught fried white fish, reindeer stew with mashed potatoes, and freshly picked strawberries with cream at a little cafe with a stunning 270-degree view of the fjords below. The whole setup is, as the kids say these days, “Norwegian af.” In the winter, this joint serves as a warming hut for a local ski resort, and getting here involved crisscrossing up a mile and half of steep, rock-strewn switchbacks. On a brisk day in January, it would be exhilarating to blast down on a set of skis. Today, we’re glad to be swaddled in the all-new Range Rover Velar, equipped with height-adjustable air suspension and hill-descent control.

“Hullo, do you mind if I join you for the ride down?” asks the chipper PR rep with a smile and posh London accent sparkly enough for three Orbitz gum commercials. Of course the answer is yes, so in she hops in and introduces herself with a laugh. “It’s quite confusing, really. My name is Mercedes, but do you know how awkward that is in this business? Especially when you have to ring people up and say, ‘Hi, this is Mercedes, of Jaguar Land Rover.’ ” It’s giggles and the crunch of rock under rubber the whole way down.

Velar also seems to be a puzzling name for this all-new fourth model in the Range Rover line, but there is precedent. When developing the original Range Rover, Land Rover engineers dubbed the prototype Velar, from the Latin word for “to cover, hide.” That makes sense for a secret prototype, and it does roll off the tongue quite luxuriously (with emphasis on the first syllable), but is Range Rover hiding something?

Not if you ask the engineers. Chief body engineer Rob Scott is up front about the platform and engine sharing between Velar and the Jaguar F-Pace. Both are built on the same line at the Solihull, England, factory that gave birth to the Land Rover brand, now owned by the Jaguar Land Rover group. The Velar launches with six aluminum-intensive, direct-injection inline-four and V-6 engines developed in-house at JLR. For North America, there are two turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinders on offer: a 180-horsepower diesel or a 247-horsepower gas engine. The current top of the range is the 380-horsepower supercharged V-6 gas engine that powers our fjord explorer.

“This is the most road-oriented Range Rover ever developed,” Scott says. It’s a claim we partially validated along the always stunning, occasionally harrowing byways that tickle the west coast of Norway. The majority of roads we drive are single-lane in each direction and often narrow for sharing in curvy, forested parts between towns. With some form of water on the ground most of the year, giant Scania trucks lumbering around blind corners, and strict enforcement of traffic laws, Norwegian speed limits are low and not for flouting. A limit-handling evaluation will have to wait, but at first blush, the Velar feels good, familiar. We loved F-Pace’s mix of sport and civility enough to nearly name it 2017 SUV of the Year, and the Velar comports itself in similar fashion but with more attention focused on smoothing out bumps, rounding off hard edges, and creating a “calm sanctuary.” This a tough assignment for our First Edition Velar, which comes shod in 22-inch wheels and low-profile tires, but credit goes to the aluminum-intensive double-A-arm front and multilink rear suspension, continuously variable adaptive dampers, and optional air suspension. The Velar’s neatest trick is how thoroughly it cloaks all its technology; although there are multiple drive modes on offer—tunable electric power steering response, a brake-based torque vectoring system, and an electronic locking rear differential—they are mostly invisible until fiddled with.

Range Rover claims a 4,471-pound curb weight for the V-6 Velar and that it will hit 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, which is all very believable. Our V-6 Velar is always a willing partner; no matter the on-road mode selected (Comfort, Eco, Dynamic, or Race), all 332 lb-ft of torque felt readily available via distant thumps of the ZF eight-speed transmission. Popping back the left downshift paddle gets things going fractionally quicker, but the right foot covers most situations. That said, the V-6 Velar is not a head-snapping wolf in a fitted wool suit. There is plenty left to hone a sharper-edged, more track-focused SVR Velar.

After thoroughly trouncing a series of man-made obstacles, including wheel articulation ramps, a curved side slope, and a hill climb and then charging triumphantly up a groomed off-road course, we ask the opinion of Land Rover expert Steve Hoare.
