I'm in English and we deal with similar stuff as I'm sure you know and it's exhausting. like yes, it's complicated! yes the words we have now didn't exist back then! but that doesn't mean we can't bring history into our present moment and discuss how it resonates!! i personally really resonate w medievalist Carolyn Dinshaw discussing queer touches across time in her work (esp in her 2012 book How Soon Is Now? for anyone interested), among others, but I've mostly explored this discussion in the Renaissance onward from a literary perspective. i mean it's not my take, i just reblogged a post, i honestly haven't done that much reading/thinking about it except i guess i think arguing whether or not someone is gay or bi is maybe one of the least interesting ways to engage, whether they're a historical figure or fictional character or celebrity or whatever else. but like... despite the url, sexuality and gender identity in the ancient world isn't something i've spent a lot of time working with at this point, like i enjoy casual conversations about it and i'm sure i will eventually get really deep into it academically but i'm not there now. so while i do agree with that post i'm not necessarily the person to ask for more on the subject.

When you think of the word feminism and how it become to be, people usually think that it was to help all women to have equal rights to vote. Well in facts, the foundation of feminism was built upon white women who would be able to vote by the 1920’s. While black women in the south did not have the freedom to vote for almost half a century, until the voting rights act was passed in 1965. Since the mid-19th century, black women and women of colour fought for their rights to vote while dealing with discrimination from white suffragists who did not want their movement associated with women of colour.

Malcolm X once said, “the most disrespected person in American is the black women, the most unprotected person in American in the black woman, the most neglected person in America is the black woman”.

I don’t think I can stand by something that black women and women of colour have never benefited from. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want equally for everyone, it’s just that women who call themselves feminist today completely disregard other protest, or women who shame other women for loving their bodies and/or having a different point of view or belief than them. what makes you so different? We’re all human, so in order to fix this broken system we need to stop shaming each other, we should be supporting us women and unfortunately their women in our society who are more privilege than others and those who have more of an advantage. You need to understand how much freedom you have in this world and learn what it means to fight for what so many are entitled to. Be an ally for people who have less privilege than you. we live in a world where men take what they want and discard what left and were left to pick up the pieces. We are in a society where women are constantly being shamed for what we do and what we don’t, the world want to steal our voice by telling us that it’s our fault or you deserved that happened to you because of what you wore. Society teaches young girls to hate themselves instead of loving and accepting who you are. They will grow up to have a warped image of themselves and what they’re supposed to look like. For years our fathers, brothers, politicians, and others have been telling us what to do and what not to do. We are expected to be strong but gentle, educated but not opinionated, and above all beautiful but not too much cause that will make us a hoe. Us women are the glue that holds this broken world together, we have the power to say NO, the thing that makes women strong is that we have the guts to be vulnerable, we have the ability to feel the depths of our emotions and we know that we will walk through it to the other side. We use our struggles that we go through to connect to women and others alike.

What the fuck am I even doing

It’s frustrating to get it wrong. The worst is when you think you have a basic understanding of a concept only to discover you haven’t understood it at all. I have wanted to create change since I can remember. I took it upon myself to learn everything I could that seemed relevant to helping people have access to a life that gave them everything they needed in a healthy, sustainable, enjoyable way, instead of this clearly broken human world we inhabit. Turns out, that’s a lot of stuff to learn. I’m reasonably intelligent, but my all-gifted/accelerated-class beginnings and my teacher’s unsuccessful attempts to convince my parents to let me skip grades soon turned into flunking out of high school. Early family tragedy, emotional issues, and personal misunderstanding of my own probably non-binary nature did not create a stable life, and I’ve had to do all my learning amid constant chaos. I’ve had more than 30 employers, including myself. I’ve written and produced comedic theater, I’ve done landscaping, I’ve been an accountant, I’ve run a jackhammer, I’ve worked in a bookstore, I’ve been a cook, a server, a hotel night auditor and front desk agent. I’ve worked 3 full 40-hour-per-week jobs at the same time, and I’ve done circus performance on the streets for money to eat. I’ve lived in more than 25 buildings, and never alone. I’ve spent a year in Germany, two years in Alabama, three years in Portland, two years in San Francisco, six years in Oakland, a year in Santa Cruz, a year in Hollywood... I’ve lived in town houses and apartment complexes and a warehouse and a tool shed and my truck.  Meanwhile, I needed to know... everything. Especially: what people are, what people need, what people have tried already, what the current situation on the planet is, and specifically to understand the explicit ways in which the overall organization of human existence is currently broken, so as to attempt solutions. I’ve done a lot of research into early human development, that journey from something less than human to something more than ape- what are we, what do we need, why are we like this? How do we fit in to ecosystems, and what is our track record of society building and collapse, and how has social power shaped these things, changed or remained the same in the many thousands of years humans have had large societies? I’ve done a lot of looking at human physical animal needs - my mother was a critical care and emergency room nurse, my father a general practitioner doctor with a focus in geriatrics, so I started with a good base. My own struggles lead me to examine mental health and psychology pretty closely. I’ve investigated nutrition and read studies about sleep and dreaming, and read at length about DNA, what genes are, and how they replicate, what that means for illnesses and health and aging. I looked into spirituality and philosophy, parsing the standard young questions about reality, relishing books like Siddhartha , moving on to the Tao Te Ching and the Allegory of the Cave and explorations of various religions. I’ve deeply considered what it means to be a Good Human. I experienced meditation and experimented with paganism, became very interested in witchery, attempted several occult practices. I detailed the pros and cons of modern western education systems contrasted with human biological and child developmental needs as intersecting with what society needs its students to become versus what students need to finish their education knowing. I designed a whole new system of education that addresses deficiencies in current systems. I studied energy production processes and played with my own experimental energy production techniques. I devoured information about sustainable architecture and zero-footprint design. I looked up studies that examine the average hours of work per week done by tribal people living in challenging environments like the Kalahari Desert and the Amazon Jungle, and compared that to anthropological observations of modern western families.  What I’m trying to express is the depth and variation of what I set out to learn. So, because of the width of this spectrum of information I’ve been trying to cram into my brain, I’ve cut corners. I’ve read recaps of recent history, in favor of in depth research of prehistory. I’ve read summaries of political movements instead of the literature produced by the leaders of those movements. I looked at pros and cons of various regime styles instead of tracing back their histories. There are... important areas in which I’ve only gone over the cliff notes, as it were. OF course that is totally inadequate. OF COURSE I don’t understand what I thought knew. smh. There are no shortcuts to knowledge, I KNOW this, I don’t know why I am so caught off guard. Now I have to question my answers. Because, I DO HAVE answers, finally. Projects that start at a manageable level, organizing a single community of about 60 people, one tribe’s worth, in a way that brings every part of modern american human existence under a single roof to be addressed in microcosm in order to generate replicable, scalable solutions and then uses socio-economic success to grow itself outward. Solutions that don’t try to force people to join in, but that tempt people to copy. Solutions that don’t tell people how they must live, but instead give them tools and options and examples. A community that allows minimum wage workers to own property (so that the community does not live under landlords) and provides the means to create outreach programs offering semi-temporary room and board to homeless people (especially those with children) women fleeing abusive relationships, rehabilitated convicts, disabled veterans, etc. That become low-cost support services to the neighborhood the community is in. This community and those that follow, are designed to function as a low risk entrepreneurial incubators such that the solutions to socio-economic inequalities and deficiencies can be developed for sale to the middle class such that the middle class pays low-income workers to create alternatives to current corrupt and broken institutions... creating new banks and schools, reinventing food and clothing industries, competing directly with and eventually replacing Walmarts and Targets and Wholefoods... This gives people more power to demand change to existing institutions by providing blueprints and working examples for alternatives. Eventually these communities and baby institutions can join and grow to form whole cities that are explicitly designed for sustainable low-environmental impact lifestyles, in which the municipality itself owns all the actual property, and therefore there are no landlords and 100% of the “rent” is used for infrastructure, alternative energy production and waste management, and, importantly, funding social programs that ensure everyone has better than the bare minimum access to food, shelter, clothing, information/education, and healthcare. One city can become two, then four. If the current broken and corrupt institutions don’t allow us to change them, they can be replaced entirely. It’s a huge undertaking. I have only just started taking action this last year after more than 20 years of conceptualization, and I anticipate dying without seeing it reach it’s full potential. And here today I find out, I still have AT LEAST a whole master’s degree worth of stuff to learn. That after all my study and research and reading and experience, someone literally half my age can tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about and call me ignorant... and she’s right. She’s absolutely right. I STILL don’t know what I’m talking about, in so many areas, in so many ways. I hate it. Because I’m running out of time. I have to move forward. And I have to do it knowing that I don’t know what I’m doing, which is fine for my own life, but I’m trying to influence other people’s lives, and that worries me. How can I ask people to trust me, to join me, when I don’t even, when I can’t, when I’m still so uneducated and ignorant? But my life is meaningless otherwise. I have chosen to not have children for this, I have turned my back on economic success for this, I have existed on the edge of society for this.

Meditation: If God is all-loving and compassionate, then why is there so much suffering and evil in this world? Many agnostics refuse to believe in God because of this seemingly imponderable problem. If God is love then evil and suffering must be eliminated in all its forms. What is God's answer to this human dilemma? Jesus' parable about a highway robbery gives us a helpful hint. Jesus told this dramatic story in response to a devout Jew who wanted to understand how to apply God's great commandment of love to his everyday life circumstances. In so many words this religious-minded Jew said: "I want to love God as best as I can and I want to love my neighbor as well. But how do I know that I am fulfilling my duty to love my neighbor as myself?"

Jesus must have smiled when he heard this man challenge him to explain one's duty towards their neighbor. For the Jewish believer the law of love was plain and simple: "treat your neighbor as you would treat yourself." The real issue for this believer was the correct definition of who is "my neighbor".  He understood "neighbor" to mean one's fellow Jew who belonged to the same covenant which God made with the people of Israel. Up to a certain point, Jesus agreed with this sincere expert but, at the same time, he challenged him to see that God's view of neighbor went far beyond his narrow definition.

God's love and mercy extends to all

Jesus told a parable to show how wide God's love and mercy is towards every fellow human being. Jesus' story of a brutal highway robbery was all too familiar to his audience. The road from Jerusalem to Jericho went through a narrow winding valley surrounded by steep rocky cliffs. Many wealthy Jews from Jerusalem had winter homes in Jerico. This narrow highway was dangerous and notorious for its robbers who could easily ambush their victim and escape into the hills. No one in his right mind would think of traveling through this dangerous highway alone. It was far safer to travel with others for protection and defense.

Our prejudice gets in the way of mercy

So why did the religious leaders refuse to give any help when they saw a half-dead victim lying by the roadside? Didn't they recognize that this victim was their neighbor? And why did a Samaritan, an outsider who was despised by the Jews, treat this victim with special care at his own expense as he would care for his own family? Who was the real neighbor who showed brotherly compassion and mercy? Jesus makes the supposed villain, the despised Samaritan, the merciful one as an example for the status conscious Jews. Why didn't the priest and Levite stop to help? The priest probably didn't want to risk the possibility of ritual impurity. His piety got in the way of charity. The Levite approached close to the victim, but stopped short of actually helping him. Perhaps he feared that bandits were using a decoy to ambush him. The Levite put personal safety ahead of saving his neighbor.

God expects us to be merciful as he is merciful

What does Jesus' story tell us about true love for one's neighbor? First, we must be willing to help even if others brought trouble on themselves through their own fault or negligence. Second, our love and concern to help others in need must be practical. Good intentions and showing pity, or emphathizing with others, are not enough. And lastly, our love for others must be as wide and as inclusive as God's love. God excludes no one from his care and concern. God's love is unconditional. So we must be ready to do good to others for their sake, just as God is good to us.

Jesus not only taught God's way of love, but he showed how far God was willing to go to share in our suffering and to restore us to wholeness of life and happiness. Jesus overcame sin, suffering, and death through his victory on the cross. His death brought us freedom from slavery to sin and the promise of everlasting life with God. He willingly shared in our suffering to bring us to the source of true healing and freedom from sin and oppression. True compassion not only identifies and emphathizes with the one who is in pain, but takes that pain on oneself in order to bring freedom and restoration.

The cross shows us God's perfect love and forgiveness

Jesus truly identified with our plight, and he took the burden of our sinful condition upon himself. He showed us the depths of God's love and compassion, by sharing in our suffering and by offering his life as an atoning sacrifice for our sins upon the cross. His suffering is redemptive because it brings us healing and restoration and the fulness of eternal life. God offers us true freedom from every form of oppression, sin, and suffering. And that way is through the cross of Jesus Christ. Are you ready to embrace the cross of Christ, to suffer for his sake, and to lay down your life out of love for your neighbor?

"Lord Jesus, may your love always be the foundation of my life. Free me from every fear and selfish-concern that I may freely give myself in loving service to others, even to the point of laying my life down for their sake."

NEAR-MISS?

  "It is something very near to you." —Deuteronomy 30:14  

The priest and Levite both "saw" the wounded victim, but didn't want to get near him (Lk 10:31, 32). The Samaritan, though, had no hesitation about getting near the hurting man. The Samaritan "approached him" (Lk 10:34) and "treated him with compassion" (Lk 10:37).

Love has to get near and get involved. Love by its very nature can't keep its distance. Jesus, Who is Love, could have remained in heaven in eternal bliss with His Father. However, His love impelled Him (see 2 Cor 5:14) to seek us out (Lk 19:10), be near us (Ps 145:18), and even be God-with-us, Emmanuel (Mt 1:23). Now He even is so near us that He dwells within us (Jn 6:56; 17:23).

Is there any person, group, or class of people you won't get near? Do you stay away from the poor, uneducated, crippled, aged, criminals, unrepentant, or those of a different race or religion? These may be your "wounded victims," your chance to be a good Samaritan. Jesus may be saying that as often as you neglected to get near these people, you neglected to get near Him (Mt 25:45).

  Prayer: Jesus, You never kept Your distance from anyone. May I and all who follow You love as You love. Promise: "The Lord hears the poor, and His own who are in bonds He spurns not." —Ps 69:34 Praise: Praise You, Jesus, resurrected, ascended, and glorified! Listen to "KaTR Quest For The Pulitzer: "Compulsory Education"" on Spreaker.There can be no doubt that knowledge is power.  Education is the key to opening new minds to the truths that surround us.  Throughout time the great struggle has been in keeping certain knowledge alive as generations passed.  Oral traditions gave way to the printed page, and from there into the information age with unimaginable struggles along the way.  Man now finds himself sitting upon more knowledge than his singular understanding can handle, so we’ve created a corporate ideal.  An education system, to compartmentalize humanity into a variety of fields of expertise that are purposely created to keep most blind to truth while rewarding and promoting only those who go along with the strict program.

What has developed, like always, was a sort of caste system of information dissemination where at the core lies a known truth but it is flanked on every angle by priests, who in many cases do not consider themselves rank and file but absolutely are.

When a lie is passed from generation to the next it gains an incredible power.  It gains powers over those who believe it and it becomes a weapon for those who decipher it’s mystery.  At the core level of the education system there are no teachers, or scientists.  Therein lies a society, or bloodline that has property over the true historical narrative and it’s evidence.

You could depend on a random human to be shown the full range of evidence and come to a very close conclusion to the true basis of reality, they would then have no trouble thriving within the confines of this natural life.  However, no regular person is ever shown even a fraction of the evidence.  What is allowed to surface is purposely pointed towards desired conclusions.  Conclusions that leave men pliable, fearful of future loss and pointed entirely in the wrong directions.

Schooling has taken many forms over the ages what we’ve become accustomed to today could be likened to a manufacturing assembly line.  Children enter on one end and exit the other of a Prussian styled school model where ‘no child is left behind’.  It sounds good on the surface, if you never dig into the curriculum and delve into the counterpoints of what has been deemed ‘fact’.  True or not, these digestible little nuggets are force fed to the public in a compulsory fashion.  If baby doesn’t learn their abc’s 123’s and that the earth spins round and round, daddy goes to jail.

By the end of one’s schooling the citizen created is very much invested in his or her own knowledge base.  A student might even pay upwards of one hundred thousand dollars on their education.  To learn that everything they paid for was a cockamamie lie, hurts. This education might prove useful in gaining worthless fiat currency but as it all dawns on the citizen that it was all little more than a tool of their own oppression...  It hurts badly and is rarely faced head on.  

What we have in society of compartmentalized system of thought and dissemination of information in where people enforce this control upon each other.  There is no boogeyman required when a person’s best friends and closest colleges are the ones keeping them from breaking from the lie and seeking truth.

The idea of ‘no child left behind’ sounds wonderful if Santa Claus is picking you up on your way to summer camp.  It hardly rings with the same gleeful tone when ‘no child left behind’ is being barked by some monolithic cult demanding you adhere to their collective way of life.  

But wait Kappo and The Rev, this education system has lifted our nation to great heights!  Our forward thinking American ingenuity is what has shaped the 21st century, you dumbasses!  How dare you impugn the massive jump in quality of life and technological breakthroughs in travel and health and engineering and everything!?   The only reason you two bozo’s take this ridiculous stance is because of how uneducated you are, and how little of the complex nature of these studies you actually understand.  

This isn’t about whether science or technology exists, it’s about how it’s taught and to what measure and why!  

It true, Kappo and The Rev are not mainstream newsmen, or graduated scientists, or college professors, or industry magnates. That’s what makes it all the easier to make these points about our education system and it’s faults because we never fully bought into the idea to begin with.  We were forced to march alongside you as you strove for better grades and higher salaries.  We got up on time, and tapped dance from classroom to classroom like rats in a maze.  We underwent the same brainwashing attempt, and yes the reason we didn’t get so sucked up in it is because of our overall under-achieving attitude and basic inability to go along with the plan.

Yes, if you went to a psychologist and asked them about this little article they’d talk to you all about ‘oppositional defiant disorder’ or in layman's terms...

One of these fine doctors might label you a schizophrenic whose thoughts and behaviors don’t fit their mold of acceptable constructs. When the truest explanation often is you are much smarter than the doctor you are speaking to, and rather than wasting your time with college style book learning and kegstand party fucking, you applied your greater intellect into seeing past the blinders placed on your doctor.  You lived life, created art, delved into the depths yourself rather than having read about it, and diagnosed it in someone else.

Today, a child is awoke before dawn not to plow a field, or milk a cow or tend to chores for the family, or just laugh and play but to ride a giant orange bus to a publicly owned building with very strict rules. This child is kept for 8 to 10 hours a day they are lead by the nose, by bell and by threat of being held prisoner even longer, through hour and hour of sing-song indoctrination into this modern era American cult.  A school system dead set on teaching the half-truth, one sided, mind control to children uprooted and separated from their family.  

This family however, is so stressed by modern economic demands that it is all too happy to have publically funded day care for kids ages 5 to 18!  Even though they know that what the school teaches about history and many sciences isn’t going to serve them in any capacity other than to indoctrinate their child into this system where consent is planted via education into a populace, who then turn blind eyes to nearly everything that doesn’t interfere with their daily needs being met.  We’re talking about free daycare here, people!   

Truth is, you have to send your children to them or they will get you!  This is compulsory education now. For better or worse. You have to do it, or else.  Truth or not.  Those types of threats come levied from our government daily, we don’t mind!  We dummy up and do it.   

Sure, times used to be a lot tougher, and information was a lot harder to come by but school and universities were full of young people who WANTED to learn. They were not being forced to learn and in most cases were lucky to have the opportunity.  People from simpler times saw knowledge as precious, and they took personal care and upkeep on their own smarts and well-being.  When a person of the more curious persuasion got the urge to learn his way out of a lousy situation he walked ‘uphill both ways’ to school and back because he or she WANTED to learn the tools it took to think and decipher.   For every scholar there were several farm hands who had no need or desire for book learning, as their well-being was met in their daily work.  Homesteads built, food coaxed from dust, animals cultivated and life was lived without the need of anything but ‘the school of hard knocks’.  On Kappo and The Rev we call that ‘living in line with the curse’ and there is nothing wrong with it at all.

That’s not to say we don’t want to help those who want to strive to learn, nor inspire a generation of lackadaisical youth into unlocking their potential.  There is a wellspring of knowledge well within the grasp of nearly every un-impoverished toddler, and next to no excuses for ignorance anymore.  Other than the fact that we rely on the government to teach our children and our government is actively dumbing us down in the face of great gnosis.

The old ways were about reading, writing and arithmetic and little to nothing else, save for perhaps bible study.  The emphasis was on how to think, not what to think.  Once a person could read and write the english language he or she became the most dangerous prey of all.  A creature able to invent and think his way out of any given situation.  You added the ancient wisdom of arithmetic and it unlocked a wild potential in man.  Man is random, and man is chaotic and man is very capable of toppling the cruelest of opposition.  The original intent on our education system was very altruistic.

Suddenly however, the country was overpopulated with young, virile minds ready to take the world by storm!  They had taught man to fish, metaphorically and by the middle of the 19th century America was bursting at the seams with educated protestants, who could pour forth from every backwater of the country to take shape as ‘the greatest generation’ at any given time.  New ideas were burning up society like wildfire and the modern era was launched!  With it brought some of the most heinous, brother on brother bloody violence that ever took place.  With each passing iteration of ‘the war to end all wars’ the country limped through the civil war, world war 1 and 2, Korea and by the end of the Vietnam conflict the better part of a centuries worth of the best and brightest had been snuffed out.

At the end of the rabbit hole for our students was institutional violence and murder… War.

Time after time it ended us up in the same place, playing the same political games, and earning the same cruel divide and conquer fates. We’d given our consent, in our so called ‘democracy’ which we were never taught in school was actually a ‘constitutional republic’.  Under it’s own hidden hierarchies and occult connections.

What followed when it came to education was peacetime Fabian Socialism at it’s finest.  For now, gone were the ideas of full-scale bloody overthrow and in came the ideas of slow, methodical change brought on by generations of incremental measures.  Mankind isn’t easy to tame but it can be done with GIANT repeated lies and subtle slips and changes to social control.

When a text book repeats that a provable ‘false flag attack’ is in fact truth, and uses it as justification for institutional murder the student is instantly warped and becomes suggestible.   Couple this alongside teachings about unprovable, unrepeatable ‘big bang evolution’ and suddenly that student is a member of your new age religion.  Launch a bunch of phony bologna ‘space’ missions that the public was primed for and you’ve got nearly everyone eating out of your Nazi mind-controlled hand.   From there you’ve basically captured us all, save for a good cold war between allied nations and a nice ‘broken window’ military conflict to grow the military industrial complex.  All you have to do is every decade or so kill off a few thousand citizens who get ‘too big for their britches’ and the rest of us will follow suit.

We say separate church and state and while yes, mother church doesn’t openly have her slimy hand in our affairs, she absolutely has and does guide and interfere via our learning institutions.  (For more on that check out connections between certain American universities and jesuit or catholic influence.  You’ll find many of our leading health institutions are actually well infiltrated, if not created by your old friend the Pope.  Not to mention the ‘Masonic’ Children’s Hospitals everywhere…  the inversions going on are really quite staggering.)

We’ve lost an immense amount of wisdom and knowledge that comes from reading and understanding the ancient texts.  It’s not like we can trust mother church to teach people much about the God of all creation.  So why would we trust a school?!  

People have lost hold on what is true because of the dog and pony show being wagged before them but perhaps ‘people’ aren’t meant to find, individuals are.  The things of God, the seemingly hidden true nature of our existence provides such a wonderful testing ground for us human beings.  It would seem that it gives our creator great joy that such a veil is placed over the truth, and that such odd measures must be taken for a person of flesh and blood to understand the true workings of his reality.

Proverbs 25:2

It’s so like Kappo and The Rev to dedicate this time to this sort of expose.  Because, ultimately in the end we don’t hate educators, or impune the very real desire to teach young minds to learn and grow.  We wish nothing more than children to have the time and accessibility to materials that cover every spectrum of thought. ��We don’t wish for any final conclusion to be drawn that de-legitimizes or denigrates the very real and powerful work of academics world wide, even though a closer look at some closely held theories casts doubts, at best.  However we have to pay attention to what the allowable spectrum of thought is, and why we seem to be narrowing it, all the while saying our minds are opening (awakening).

We all want our children to be able to work and thrive and add value to our shared world.  We want to give them the tools to free themselves from the ignorance and pain we came from.  You wouldn’t give you child a hammer that smacked them in the head every time they drove their tenth nail, that would be a ludicrous tool to use. You wouldn’t hand your buddy a circular saw that had a wonky way of chopping off your fingers at random, that wouldn’t be very nice of you.  You also wouldn’t teach your child a one-sided, narrow world-view that while giving them tools to play nice with, doomed them to repeat the past.

You can teach a man to fish, but then you’re supposed to let him go fish for himself.  Not then coerce the man to fish for you and split the take.  Guess that’s the difference between ancient proverbs and modern thinking.

Stealing The Railroad

“You’ll never make good money doing hair for the rest of your life. That’s not a career for you, you need to go to college, get a business degree. I can see you doing secretarial work in an office setting or something.”

Five years and many hurdles into my career, I knew my industry a little better than the toxic person with whom I had been sharing my life. The words of my ex boyfriend were ignorant and untrue, but I couldn’t completely discredit them.I was working for a money laundering scam in the form of an outdated unisex business model located in a dead shopping mall. I went from assisting one of the areas top professionals, benefitting from paid on the job education, and servicing some of the most prominent local business women to sitting in a dimly lit, 30 year old mall salon that hadn’t changed since the day it opened and charges extra for a wash. My haircut price went from an unjustifiable 35$ to an even more unjustifiable 15$. Based on everything I learned in beauty school and continuing education, that’s assbjckwards. 

Where did I go wrong?

I had no idea. I still have no idea. 

All I knew was that 15$ haircuts were never going to put me on a cruise ship and evolving from apartment living to home ownership seemed foreign. “Working” 70 hour weeks seemed like it would have yielded greater reward. I didn’t know what I wanted but I knew I didn’t want what I had.

All the salon business workshops offered all the strategies for growth and success. Business owners from around the world will offer their professional advice on how to increase professional value and become a successful stylist. Industry trade shows in fashion capitals will attract dreamers and doers from every avenue of beauty. 

At an international beauty conference, less than half of the tens of thousands of people in attendance will actually make a successful, lifelong career out of doing hair for a living. So who “makes it” and who doesn’t? Who succeeds and who fails? What sets the doers apart from the dreamers? Susie Fields Carder hit the nail on the head in her industry focused book, “Passion”, published by Milady.

Passion is the key ingredient for success in the beauty industry. Passion was all I had left in me despite my dramatic professional decline in the first five years. I had a passion for bettering myself by bettering others. Seven hair salons in five years of “bettering” people made me no better. Where do I go from here? You know what really needs to be better? The industry doers. The employers. All the people I met along the way who somehow managed to discourage me through their business practices and strategies for success. The men and women who are technically and socially skilled enough to build a reputation and booking that demands an entrepreneurial shift in their careers, also need to have an in depth understanding of business administration.

I was delusional for certain segments of the first five years. I swore that I was doing fabulous in life with my $10,000 education in under a year. All my friends from high school who took the college route were jobless, in college debt with outdated vehicles, and living at home while I was in my own apartment supporting my loser boyfriend driving a brand new car that I financed without certainty. I had a fun cool job that paid enough to support myself and life was perfect. Why would I ever need a college degree? All those years of hard work for negative reward sounded horrible. 

Being the daughter of a woman who holds a B.S. In economics and provided a good life for a family of five on her six figure salary, I had to stop discrediting a college education. Especially seeing as how that college education paid for this cosmetology license. Statistically and historically, college educated Americans are higher earning than the uneducated working class. This information was hammered into my brain from a young age but the rebel in me wanted to think differently. I needed to learn how to think differently in a way that actually benefited my situation. 

When the wheels finally started moving in the right direction, I came to the conclusion that what I wanted was to make more money. To make more money I had to charge more money. To charge more money I had to attract a higher earning demographic, a college educated demographic.

College educated people of all ages were intimidating to me, because despite what I said about formal education being unnecessary, a portion of my subconscious believed that college educated people were better than uneducated workers like myself. A small voice inside my head was telling me I had failed in not earning a college degree like my mother. 

An even bigger voice convinced me that it wasn’t too late. And this wasn’t my ex’s voice pulling at me. This was my voice of passion that I had discovered years earlier in Susie’s book.  At 24 years old with no kids, manageable debt, and a foundation of hair cutting skills to work with, the world was mine for the taking. I was the only thing holding me back.

“You attract you” was some of the most memorable advice and knowledge acquired from my early years of hairstyling. One of the business workshops at the annual beauty show was focused around how to build the clientele you want. “Be the person you want to see in your chair, like people attract like people”. I knew this strategy to be affective and credible from my knowledge of the law of attraction. I distinctly remember the speaker reiterating, “if you’re wondering why all of your clients are assholes, take a good long look in that mirror of yours, it’s because you’re an asshole.” 

I was a fan of the humor and the theory even though my clients were not assholes and neither was I. When everything clicked for me mentally, I concluded that in order to attract the college educated target market, I had to be able to think and communicate on their level of understanding. I had to be like them. I had to be college educated. 

Theodore Roosevelt said, “A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education he may steal the whole railroad.”
