So, I just read/watched the movie of ‘The Great Gatsby’ and I hated how Tom and Daisy got away with everything, even though they were the reason why three people died.
For that reason, I wanted to create an AU to kind of fix that problem.
(Probably should have put this on top, but spoiler alert in a sense.)
In this AU, everything is the same except when Tom and Daisy settled into their new lives when started to go wrong.
It started very simple, things disappearing or being misplaced, to being hurt or almost killed, to finally seeing and hearing things that can’t be true.
What are they seeing and hearing? Well none other than George Wilson and his wife, Myrtle.
Yep, you guessed it. Tom and Daisy are being haunted by the ghosts of George and Myrtle.
(Gatsby is a ghost too, but I’ll bring him in later.)
After dying, both George and Myrtle learn a few things and were filled with anger by it, and decided to get revenge on them by haunting Tom and Daisy. Mainly:
Myrtle haunting Daisy because she was the one driving the car that killed her, and a bit of jealousy for being with Tom.
And George haunting Tom for not only sleeping with his wife, but also for telling him that she slept with another man and that said man was the one that killed her. Which resulted with him killing the guy and then himself.
(And I like to imagine that they switch up their haunts, with Myrtle teasing Tom and George just asking Daisy why she’s with a man who did so much wrong to so many people. But they mainly stick with the person that brought them the most pain.)
Now on to Gatsby, I made him a ghost because the guy deserved so much better.
But until like George and Myrtle, Gatsby is a bit more of peaceful spirit compared to those two. Sure, he’ll stop by their house to mess with them, but it’s mainly just guilt tripping them or trying to have a conversation with one of them because he knows how on edge they were because of the other ghosts in their house.
But he doesn’t hold any real anger towards them. What’s the point? He’s already dead.
He mainly hangs around Nick. I mean, why wouldn’t he? Nick was his first ever real friend. Nick didn’t want his money, went along with his crazy plan to get Daisy and didn’t want anything in return, helped him out when he was feeling nervous around Daisy after meeting so many years later, stayed the night with him after what happened with Daisy, listened to his TRUE life story, and was the only one that showed up to his funeral. (There was another guy who showed up in the book, but for this scene, I’ll go with the movie version of it.)
(I also would like to say that this isn’t a ship, but by now, what’s the point?-_-)
So Gatsby hangs around Nick and helps him out whenever he can. For plot reasons, Nick can’t see Gatsby, so he usually thinks it’s a stroke of luck. When, inaccurately, it’s Gatsby playing as his guardian angle (even though he’s not fully an angle) and trying to make sure Nick doesn’t end up in a empty life like his.
