Kirk saying this at the beginning of The Search for Spock doesn't mean a lot considering the fact that in TOS he puts his life in danger a considerable amount of times to save other people.

BUT !!! The fact that he ends up risking/losing three things that he considers more valuable than his own life -his son, his career and the Enterprise- and he still thinks it's worth it because Spock is back... INSANE! It's true love, baby!
