During the week between September 11 and the Wednesday morning when I went to Kennedy to get on the plane, none of these commonplace aspects of publishing a book seemed promising or even appropriate things to be doing. But—like most of us who were in New York that week—I was in a kind of protective coma, sleepwalking through a schedule made when planning had still seemed possible. In fact I was protecting myself so successfully that I had no idea how raw we all were until that first night, in San Francisco, when I was handed a book onstage and asked to read a few marked lines from an essay about New York I had written in 1967. Later I remembered thinking: 1967, no problem, no land mines there. I put on my glasses. I began to read. “New York was no mere city,” the marked lines began. “It was instead an infinitely romantic notion, the mysterious nexus of all love and money and power, the shining and perishable dream itself.” I hit the word “perishable” and I could not say it. I found myself onstage at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco unable to finish reading the passage, unable to speak at all for what must have been thirty seconds. All I can say about the rest of that evening, and about the two weeks that followed, is that they turned out to be nothing I had expected, nothing I had ever before experienced, an extraordinarily open kind of traveling dialogue, an encounter with an America apparently immune to conventional wisdom. The book I was making the trip to talk about was Political Fictions, a series of pieces I had written for The New York Review about the American political process from the 1988 through the 2000 presidential elections. These people to whom I was listening—in San Francisco and Los Angeles and Portland and Seattle—were making connections I had not yet in my numbed condition thought to make: connections between that political process and what had happened on September 11, connections between our political life and the shape our reaction would take and was in fact already taking. These people recognized that even then, within days after the planes hit, there was a good deal of opportunistic ground being seized under cover of the clearly urgent need for increased security. These people recognized even then, with flames still visible in lower Manhattan, that the words “bipartisanship” and “national unity” had come to mean acquiescence to the administration’s preexisting agenda—for example the imperative for further tax cuts, the necessity for Arctic drilling, the systematic elimination of regulatory and union protections, even the funding for the missile shield—as if we had somehow missed noticing the recent demonstration of how limited, given a few box cutters and the willingness to die, superior technology can be. These people understood that when Judy Woodruff, on the evening the President first addressed the nation, started talking on CNN about what “a couple of Democratic consultants” had told her about how the President would be needing to position himself, Washington was still doing business as usual. They understood that when the political analyst William Schneider spoke the same night about how the President had “found his vision thing,” about how “this won’t be the Bush economy any more, it’ll be the Osama bin Laden economy,” Washington was still talking about the protection and perpetuation of its own interests. These people got it. They didn’t like it. They stood up in public and they talked about it. Only when I got back to New York did I find that people, if they got it, had stopped talking about it. I came in from Kennedy to find American flags flying all over the Upper East Side, at least as far north as 96th Street, flags that had not been there in the first week after the fact. I say “at least as far north as 96th Street” because a few days later, driving down from Washington Heights past the big projects that would provide at least some of the manpower for the “war on terror” that the President had declared—as if terror were a state and not a technique—I saw very few flags: at most, between 168th Street and 96th Street, perhaps a half-dozen. There were that many flags on my building alone. Three at each of the two entrances. I did not interpret this as an absence of feeling for the country above 96th Street. I interpreted it as an absence of trust in the efficacy of rhetorical gestures. There was much about this return to New York that I had not expected. I had expected to find the annihilating economy of the event—the way in which it had concentrated the complicated arrangements and misarrangements of the last century into a single irreducible image—being explored, made legible. On the contrary, I found that what had happened was being processed, obscured, systematically leached of history and so of meaning, finally rendered less readable than it had seemed on the morning it happened. As if overnight, the irreconcilable event had been made manageable, reduced to the sentimental, to protective talismans, totems, garlands of garlic, repeated pieties that would come to seem in some ways as destructive as the event itself. We now had “the loved ones,” we had “the families,” we had “the heroes.” In fact it was in the reflexive repetition of the word “hero” that we began to hear what would become in the year that followed an entrenched preference for ignoring the meaning of the event in favor of an impenetrably flattening celebration of its victims, and a troublingly belligerent idealization of historical ignorance. “Taste” and “sensitivity,” it was repeatedly suggested, demanded that we not examine what happened. Images of the intact towers were already being removed from advertising, as if we might conveniently forget they had been there. The Roundabout Theatre had canceled a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins, on the grounds that it was “not an appropriate time” to ask audiences “to think critically about various aspects of the American experience.” The McCarter Theatre at Princeton had canceled a production of Richard Nelson’s The Vienna Notes, which involves a terrorist act, saying that “it would be insensitive of us to present the play at this moment in our history.” I found in New York that “the death of irony” had already been declared, repeatedly, and curiously, since irony had been declared dead at the precise moment—given that the gravity of September 11 derived specifically from its designed implosion of historical ironies—when we might have seemed most in need of it. “One good thing could come from this horror: it could spell the end of the age of irony,” Roger Rosenblatt wrote within days of the event in Time, a thought, or not a thought, destined to be frequently echoed but never explicated. Similarly, I found that “the death of postmodernism” had also been declared. (“It seemed bizarre that events so serious would be linked causally with a rarified form of academic talk,” Stanley Fish wrote after receiving a call from a reporter asking if September 11 meant the end of postmodernist relativism. “But in the days that followed, a growing number of commentators played serious variations on the same theme: that the ideas foisted upon us by postmodern intellectuals have weakened the country’s resolve.”) “Postmodernism” was henceforth to be replaced by “moral clarity,” and those who persisted in the decadent insistence that the one did not necessarily cancel out the other would be subjected to what William J. Bennett would call—in Why We Fight: Moral Clarity and the War on Terrorism—“a vast relearning,” “the reinstatement of a thorough and honest study of our history, undistorted by the lens of political correctness and pseudosophisticated relativism.” I found in New York, in other words, that the entire event had been seized—even as the less nimble among us were still trying to assimilate it—to stake new ground in old domestic wars. There was the frequent deployment of the phrase “the Blame America Firsters,” or “the Blame America First crowd,” the wearying enthusiasm for excoriating anyone who suggested that it could be useful to bring at least a minimal degree of historical reference to bear on the event. There was the adroit introduction of convenient straw men. There was Christopher Hitchens, engaging in a dialogue with Noam Chomsky, giving himself the opportunity to generalize whatever got said into “the liberal-left tendency to ‘rationalize’ the aggression of September 11.” There was Donald Kagan at Yale, dismissing his colleague Paul Kennedy as “a classic case of blaming the victim,” because the latter had asked his students to try to imagine what resentments they might harbor if America were small and the world dominated by a unified Arab-Muslim state. There was Andrew Sullivan, warning on his Web site that while the American heartland was ready for war, the “decadent left in its enclaves on the coasts” could well mount “what amounts to a fifth column.” There was the open season on Susan Sontag—on a single page of a single issue of The Weekly Standard that October she was accused of “unusual stupidity,” of “moral vacuity,” and of “sheer tastelessness”—all for three paragraphs in which she said, in closing, that “a few shreds of historical awareness might help us understand what has just happened, and what may continue to happen”; in other words that events have histories, political life has consequences, and the people who led this country and the people who wrote and spoke about the way this country was led were guilty of trying to infantilize its citizens if they continued to pretend otherwise. Inquiry into the nature of the enemy we faced, in other words, was to be interpreted as sympathy for that enemy. The final allowable word on those who attacked us was to be that they were “evildoers,” or “wrongdoers,” peculiar constructions which served to suggest that those who used them were transmitting messages from some ultimate authority. This was a year in which it would come to seem as if we had been plunged at one fell stroke into a pre-modern world. The possibilities of the Enlightenment vanished. We had suddenly been asked to accept—and were in fact accepting—a kind of reasoning so extremely fragile that it might have been based on the promised return of the cargo gods. I recall, early on, after John Ashcroft and Condoleezza Rice warned the networks not to air the bin Laden tapes because he could be “passing information,” heated debate about the First Amendment implications of this warning—as if there were even any possible point to the warning, as if we had all forgotten that our enemies as well as we lived in a world where information gets passed in more efficient ways. A year later, we were still looking for omens, portents, the supernatural manifestations of good or evil. Pathetic fallacy was everywhere. The presence of rain at a memorial for fallen firefighters was gravely reported as evidence that “even the sky cried.” The presence of wind during a memorial at the site was interpreted as another such sign, the spirit of the dead rising up from the dust. This was a year when Rear Admiral John Stufflebeem, deputy director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, would say at a Pentagon briefing that he had been “a bit surprised” by the disinclination of the Taliban to accept the “inevitability” of their own defeat. It seemed that Admiral Stufflebeem, along with many other people in Washington, had expected the Taliban to just give up. “The more that I look into it,” he said at this briefing, “and study it from the Taliban perspective, they don’t see the world the same way we do.” It was a year when the publisher of The Sacramento Bee, speaking at the midyear commencement of California State University, Sacramento, would be forced off the stage of the Arco Arena for suggesting that because of the “validity” and “need” for increased security we would be called upon to examine to what degree we might be “willing to compromise our civil liberties in the name of security.” Here was the local verdict on this aborted speech, as expressed in one of many outraged letters to the editor of the Bee: It was totally and completely inappropriate for her to use this opportunity to speak about civil liberties, military tribunals, terrorist attacks, etc. She should have prepared a speech about the accomplishments that so many of us had just completed, and the future opportunities that await us. Because this was also a year when one of the student speakers at the 2002 Harvard commencement, Zayed Yasin, a twenty-two-year-old Muslim raised in a Boston suburb by his Bangladeshi father and Irish-American mother, would be caught in a swarm of protests provoked by the announced title of his talk, which was “My American Jihad.” In fact the speech itself, which he had not yet delivered, fell safely within the commencement-address convention: its intention, Mr. Yasin told The New York Times, was to reclaim the original meaning of “jihad” as struggle on behalf of a principle, and to use it to rally his classmates in the fight against social injustice. Such use of “jihad” was not in this country previously uncharted territory: the Democratic pollster Daniel Yankelovich had only a few months before attempted to define the core values that animated what he called “the American jihad”—separation of church and state, the value placed on diversity, and equality of opportunity. In view of the protests, however, Mr. Yasin was encouraged by Harvard faculty members to change his title. He did change it. He called his talk “Of Faith and Citizenship.” This mollified some, but not all. “I don’t think it belonged here today,” one Harvard parent told The Washington Post. “Why bring it up when today should be a day of joy?” This would in fact be a year when it was to become increasingly harder to know who was infantilizing who. 2. California Monthly, the alumni magazine for the University of California at Berkeley, published in its November 2002 issue an interview with a member of the university’s political science faculty, Steven Weber, who is the director of the MacArthur Program on Multilateral Governance at Berkeley’s Institute of International Studies and a consultant on risk analysis to both the State Department and such private- sector firms as Shell Oil. It so happened that Mr. Weber was in New York on September 11, 2001, and for the week that followed. “I spent a lot of time talking to people, watching what they were doing, and listening to what they were saying to each other,” he told the interviewer: The first thing you noticed was in the bookstores. There was a substantive discussion about what it is about the nature of the American presence in the world that created a situation in which movements like al-Qaeda can thrive and prosper. I thought that was a very promising sign. But that discussion got short-circuited. Sometime in late October, early November 2001, the tone of that discussion switched, and it became: What’s wrong with the Islamic world that it failed to produce democracy, science, education, its own enlightenment, and created societies that breed terror?” The interviewer asked him what he thought had changed the discussion. “I don’t know,” he said, “but I will say that it’s a long-term failure of the political leadership, the intelligentsia, and the media in this country that we didn’t take the discussion that was forming in late September and try to move it forward in a constructive way.” I was struck by this, since it so coincided with my own impression. Most of us saw that discussion short-circuited, and most of us have some sense of how and why it became a discussion with nowhere to go. One reason, among others, runs back sixty years, through every administration since Franklin Roosevelt’s. Roosevelt was the first American president who tried to grapple with the problems inherent in securing Palestine as a Jewish state. It was also Roosevelt who laid the groundwork for our relationship with the Saudis. There was an inherent contradiction here, and it was Roosevelt, perhaps the most adroit political animal ever made, who instinctively devised the approach adopted by the administrations that followed his: Stall. Keep the options open. Make certain promises in public, and conflicting ones in private. This was always a high-risk business, and for a while the rewards seemed commensurate: we got the oil for helping the Saudis, we got the moral credit for helping the Israelis, and, for helping both, we enjoyed the continuing business that accrued to an American defense industry significantly based on arming all sides. The question of course has a history, a background involving many complicit state and non-state actors and going back most recently to, but by no means beginning with, the breakup of the Ottoman Empire. This open question, and its history, are discussed rationally and with considerable intellectual subtlety in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, as anyone who reads Amos Elon or Avishai Margalit in The New York Review or even occasionally sees Ha’aretz on-line is well aware. Where the question is not discussed rationally—where in fact the question is rarely discussed at all, since so few of us are willing to see our evenings turn toxic—is in New York and Washington and in those academic venues where the attitudes and apprehensions of New York and Washington have taken hold. The president of Harvard recently warned that criticisms of the current government of Israel could be construed as “anti-Semitic in their effect if not their intent.” The very question of the US relationship with Israel, in other words, has come to be seen—at Harvard as well as in New York and Washington—as unraisable, potentially lethal, the conversational equivalent of an unclaimed bag on a bus. We take cover. We wait for the entire subject to be defused, safely insulated behind baffles of invective and counterinvective. Many opinions are expressed. Few are allowed to develop. Even fewer change. We have come in this country to tolerate many such fixed opinions, or national pieties, each with its own baffles of invective and counterinvective, of euphemism and downright misstatement, its own screen that slides into place whenever actual discussion threatens to surface. We have for example allowed American biological research to fall behind that in countries where stem cell programs are not confused with “cloning” and “abortion on demand,” countries in other words where rationality is not held hostage to the posturing of the political process. We have allowed all rhetorical stops to be pulled out on non-issues, for example when the federal appeals court’s Ninth Circuit ruled the words “under God” an unconstitutional addition to the Pledge of Allegiance. The Pledge was written in 1892 by a cousin of Edward Bellamy’s, Francis Bellamy, a socialist Baptist minister who the year before had been pressured to give up his church because of the socialist thrust of his sermons. The clause “under God” was added in 1954 to distinguish the United States from the atheistic Soviet Union. “Ridiculous” was the word from the White House about the ruling declaring the clause unconstitutional. “Junk justice,” Governor Pataki said. “Just nuts,” Senator Daschle said. “Doesn’t make good sense to me,” Representative Gephardt said. There was on this point a genuinely bipartisan rush to act out the extent of the judicial insult, the affront to all Americans, the outrage to the memory of the heroes of September 11. After the June 2002 ruling, members of the House met on the Capitol steps to recite the Pledge—needless to say the “under God” version—while the Senate interrupted debate on a defense bill to pass, unanimously, a resolution condemning the Ninth Circuit decision. Land, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, “the secularists are going to have a harder time making their case.” One footnote on the Pledge issue, and the extent to which it intersects with the case the secularists are going to have a harder time making: a significant number of Americans now recite the Pledge with another new clause, which they hope to see made permanent by legislation. After the words “with liberty and justice for all,” they add “born and unborn.” All of these issues or non-issues are, as they say, just politics, markers in a game. The flag-burning amendment is just politics, the school prayer issue is just politics—a bone to the Republican base on the Christian right and a way to beat up on the judiciary, red meat for the “Reagan Democrats” or “swing voters” who are increasingly seen as the base for both parties. The prohibition on the creation of new cell lines from discarded embryos that constituted the President’s “compromise” on the stem cell question is politics. The fact that Israel has become the fulcrum of our foreign policy is politics. When it comes to any one of these phenomena that we dismiss as “politics,” we tend to forgive, or at least overlook, the absence of logic or sense. We tell ourselves that this is the essential give and take of democracy, we tell ourselves that our elected representatives are doing the necessary work of creating consensus. We try to convince ourselves that somewhere, beneath the posturing, there is a hidden logic, there are minds at work, there is someone actually thinking out the future of the country beyond the 2004 election. These would be comforting notions were they easier to maintain. In fact we have created a political process in which “consensus” is the last thing the professionals want or need, a process that works precisely by turning the angers and fears and energy of the few—that handful of voters who can be driven by the fixed aspect of their own opinions—against the rest of the country. During the past decade—through the several years of the impeachment process and through the denouement of the 2000 election—we had seen secular democracy itself put up for grabs in this country, and the response to September 11 could not have encouraged us to think that the matter was in any way settled. We had seen the general acquiescence in whatever was presented as imperative by the administration. We had seen the persistent suggestions that anyone who expressed reservations about detentions, say, or military tribunals, was at some level “against” America. (As in the presidential formulation “you’re either with us or you’re with the terrorists.”) We had seen, most importantly, the insistent use of September 11 to justify the reconception of America’s correct role in the world as one of initiating and waging virtually perpetual war. And we had seen, buttressing this reconception, the demand that we interpret the war in Afghanistan as a decisive victory over al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and radical fundamentalism in general. This was despite repeated al-Qaeda-linked explosions throughout Southeast Asia. Despite continuing arson and rocket attacks on girls’ schools in Afghanistan. And despite the fact that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs said in November 2002 at the Brookings Institu-tion that we had lost momentum in Afghanistan because the Taliban and al-Qaeda had been quicker to adapt to US tactics than the US had been to theirs. 3. In 1988, a few weeks after George W. Bush’s father was elected president, I wrote a post-election note for The New York Review about a trip the senior Bush had made to Israel and Jordan in 1986, when he was still vice-president. He had his own camera crew with him in Israel, but not in Jordan, since, as an official explained to the Los Angeles Times, there was “nothing to be gained from showing him schmoozing with Arabs.” Still, the Bush advance team in Amman had devoted considerable attention to crafting visuals for the traveling press. Members of the advance team had requested, for example, that the Jordanian army marching band change its uniforms from white to red. They had requested that the Jordanians, who did not have enough helicopters to transport Bush’s traveling press corps, borrow the necessary helicopters to do so from the Israeli air force. In an effort to assure the color of live military action as a backdrop for the vice-president, they had asked the Jordanians to stage maneuvers at a sensitive location overlooking Israel and the Golan Heights. They had asked the Jordanians to raise, over the Jordanian base there, the American flag. They had asked that Bush be photographed studying, through binoculars, “enemy territory,” a shot ultimately vetoed by the State Depart- ment, since the “enemy territory” at hand was Israel. They had also asked, possibly the most arresting detail, that, at every stop on the itinerary, camels be present. “This is in fact the kind of story we expect to hear about our elected officials,” I wrote in 1988: We not only expect them to use other nations as changeable scrims in the theater of domestic politics but encourage them to do so. After the April 1961 failure of the Bay of Pigs, John Kennedy’s approval rating was four points higher than it had been in March. After the 1965 intervention in the Dominican Republic, Lyndon Johnson’s approval rating rose six points. After the 1983 invasion of Grenada, Ronald Reagan’s approval rating rose four points, and what was that winter referred to in Washington as “Lebanon”—the sending of American marines into Beirut, the killing of 241, and the subsequent pullout—was, in the afterglow of this certified success in the Caribbean, largely forgotten. That was 1988. Fourteen years later, we were again watching the scrims being changed, but in a theater we did not own. The Middle East was not Grenada. It was not the Dominican Republic. It was not, as they used to say in Washington about the Caribbean, “our lake.” It was nitroglycerin, an unstable part of the world in which we had managed to make few friends and many enemies. And yet, all through the summer of 2002, the inevitability of going to war with Iraq was accepted as if predestined. The “when” had already been settled. “Time is getting short,” The New York Times had warned us in July, “for decisions that have to be made if the goal is to take action early next year, before the presidential election cycle intrudes.” That last clause bore study. “Before the presidential election cycle intrudes.” In case the priorities were still unclear. The “why” had also been settled. The President had identified Saddam Hussein as one of the evildoers. Yes, there were questions about whether the evildoer in question had the weapons we feared he had, and yes, there were questions about whether he would use them if he did have them, and yes, there were questions about whether attacking Iraq might not in fact ensure that he would use them. But to ask those questions was sissy, not muscular, because the President had said we were going to do it and the President, if he were to back down, risked losing the points he got on the muscular “moral clarity” front. “I made up my mind,” he had said in April, “that Saddam needs to go.” This was one of many curious, almost petulant statements offered in lieu of actually presenting a case. I’ve made up my mind, I’ve said in speech after speech, I’ve made myself clear. The repeated statements became their own reason: “Given all we have said as a leading world power about the necessity for regime change in Iraq,” James R. Schlesinger, who is now a member of Richard Perle’s Defense Policy Board, told The Washington Post in July, “our credibility would be badly damaged if that regime change did not take place.” There was of course, for better or for worse, a theory, or a fixed idea, behind these pronouncements from the President—actually not so much behind them as coinciding with them, dovetailing in a way that made it possible for many to suggest that the President was actually in on the thinking. The theory, or fixed idea, which not only predated September 11 but went back to the Reagan administration and its heady dreams of rollback, had already been employed to provide a rationale for the President’s tendency to exhibit a certain truculence toward those who were not Americans. Within the theory, any such truculence could be inflated into “The Bush Doctrine,” or “The New American Unilateralism.” The theory was this: the collapse of the Soviet Union had opened the door to the inevitability of American preeminence, a mantle of beneficent power that all nations except rogue nations—whatever they might say on the subject—were yearning for us to assume. “We run a uniquely benign imperium,” Charles Krauthammer had written in celebration of this point in a June 2001 issue of The Weekly Standard. “This is not mere self-congratulation; it is a fact manifest in the way others welcome our power.” Given this fixed idea, as if in a dream from which there is no waking, and given the correlative dream notion that an American president, Ronald Reagan, had himself caused the collapse of the Soviet Union with a specific magical incantation, the “Evil Empire” speech, the need to bring our force for good to bear on the Middle East could only become an imperative. By June 2002, Jim Hoagland was noting in The Washington Post that there was a growing acceptance at the White House of the need for an overwhelming US invasion force that will remain on the ground in Iraq for several years. The US presence will serve as the linchpin for democratic transformation of a major Arab country that can be a model for the region. A new Iraq would also help provide greater energy security for Americans. A few weeks later in the Post, Michael Kelly was sketching an even rosier outcome, based on his eccentric reading of the generation now coming of age in the Middle East as a population poised by history to see the United States not as its enemy but as its “natural liberator.” “It is right to think that we are living in a hinge moment in history,” he wrote, and then argued against those who believe that the moment is not necessarily ours to control. “But it is wrong to think that the large forces of this moment act on the hinge to shut the door against American interests.” The contrary may be true, he wrote, if only we take the next step, which is “to destroy the regime of Saddam Hussein and liberate the people of Iraq.” This will be, he said, “when history really begins to turn on its hinge.” It so happened that I was traveling around the country again recently, talking and listening to people in St. Louis and Columbia and Philadelphia and San Diego and Los Angeles and San Francisco and Pittsburgh and Boston. I heard very few of the fixed ideas about America’s correct role in the world that had come to dominate the dialogue in New York and Washington. I encountered many people who believed there was still what we had come to call a disconnect between the government and the citizens. I did not encounter conviction that going to war with Iraq would result in a democratic transformation of the Middle East. Most people seemed resigned to the prospect that we would nonetheless go to war with Iraq. Many mentioned a sense of “inevitability,” or “dread.” A few mentioned August 1914, and its similar sense of an irreversible drift toward something that would not work out well. Several mentioned Vietnam, and the similar bright hopefulness of those who had seen yet another part of the world as a blackboard on which to demonstrate their own superior plays. A few said that had they lost relatives on September 11, which they had not, they would be deeply angered at having those deaths cheapened by being put to use to justify this new war. They did not understand what this new war was about, but they knew it wasn’t about that promising but never quite substantiated meeting in Prague between Iraqi intelligence and Mohamed Atta. They did not want to believe that it was about oil. Nor did they want to believe that it was about domestic politics. If I had to characterize a common attitude among them I would call it waiting to see. At a remove. Like most of them, I no longer remembered all the arguments and inconsistencies and downright contradictions of the summer and early fall. I did remember one thing: a sequence of reports. It was June 1 when the President announced, in a commencement address at West Point, that the United States military would henceforth act not defensively but preemptively against terrorists and hostile states in possession of chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons. It was June 6 when the secretary of state advised NATO in Brussels that NATO could no longer wait for “absolute proof” of such possession before taking action. It was June 10 when Thomas E. Ricks and Vernon Loeb reported in The Washington Post that under this new doctrine, according to Pentagon officials, the United States would consider using high-yield nuclear weapons on a first-strike basis. The use of such weapons would be reserved, according to these officials, for deployment “against biological weapons that can be best destroyed by sustained exposure to the high heat of a nuclear blast.” Some bunkers in Iraq, the Post was told by Stephen M. Younger, the director of the Defense Department’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency, are in fact “so incredibly hard” that “they do require high-yield nuclear weapons.” I never saw this mentioned again. I never heard anyone refer to it. Not even during the discussions of nuclear intentions that occurred six months later, after the administration released a reminder that the US reserved the right, if it or its allies were attacked with weapons of mass destruction, to respond with nuclear as well as conventional force. But let’s look at where we are. The idealists of the process are talking about the hinge of history. And the Department of Defense was talking as early as last June about unloosing, for the first time since 1945, high-yield nuclear weapons. Sean Penn recently released Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff. It is, ostensibly, a novel. Sarah Silverman compared Penn to Mark Twain and E.E. Cummings. A Kirkus reviewer equated him to Kurt Vonnegut and David Foster Wallace. Salman Rushdie declared it a book that Thomas Pynchon and Hunter S. Thompson would love, possibly because he longs for the good old days when people wanted him dead. It’s telling that all these figures of comparison are incapable of disagreeing because they’re either famously reclusive or dead. Having recently read Bob Honey, I am confident in declaring it the literary equivalent of renal failure.

Perhaps the only thing you need to know about Penn’s book is that the brief first chapter, about three elderly people getting murdered in their retirement home, is called “Seeking Homeostasis in Inherent Hypocrisy.” Penn writes like he’s looked up every single word in his thesaurus except “dictionary.” He uses unnecessary terms, then provides 70 footnotes to explain the definition of the unnecessary terms, because he assumes that his readers aren’t at his level of intelligence. In a way, he isn’t wrong.
Here’s a typical sentence, in this case describing a woman: Effervescence lived in her every cellular expression, and she had spizzerinctum to spare. Penn thinks that if less is more, then more must be incredible. He writes novels like they’re a high school essay he’s desperate to pad.

So, about those murdered old people. We’re introduced to Bob Honey, a successful but disaffected middle-aged white man who is brave enough to be suspicious of some aspects of modern American life. Bob worked in waste management, and while selling his services in Iraq during the American occupation, he became convinced to kill elderly Americans for the government because … well, there’s no actual explanation, because Penn has taken the creative approach of not giving his hero any personality or traits. Penn then boldly satirizes the Iraq War by pointing out that it was sometimes violent, and holy shit you guys, some people may have profited from that violence. It’s an interesting observation if these are the first words you’ve read since 2003.
Now, you might be thinking, “OK, that doesn’t sound very profound, but it’s still reasonable to critique the Iraq War, right?” To which I’d respond that Penn refers to the Pentagon as “the five-sided puzzle palace,” then provides a footnote that clarifies he means “the Pentagon.”
From there, we learn that the American government feels threatened by old people who don’t buy enough branded products. The only real plot point is that the NSA, a covert section of the EPA, and a bunch of conservative foundations are working together on these old people murders because the removal of the flatulence they contribute to the environment allows businesses to pollute more. Way to tackle America’s problems head on, Sean Penn.
After agreeing to help the government kill old people for no good reason, Bob’s wanderings of America and the world eventually cause him to reach the incredible realization that killing people is bad and that, holy shit, America might be bad too. So Bob tries and fails to kill a Trump stand-in while rescuing his 20-something girlfriend who has all the character development of a calculator with “BOOBS” written on it. And that’s it. Penn wrote a series of incoherent angry tweets about America, then stretched them out to novel length with shit like this:
Behind decorative gabion walls, an elderly neighbor sits centurion on his porch watching Bob with surreptitious soupcon. Bob sees this. Feels fucked by his own face.

Sean Penn Never Learned What Satire Is
The idea that the government is killing old people doesn’t have a point; it’s just there, because it’s something bad people would do and grr, the government is bad. The whole book is full of that kind of vapid pseudo-criticism. Sean Penn is a man who looked at the world and its many issues in all of their incredible complexity and reached conclusions like maybe the media … might be influencing what we think about! Have you considered that marketing might be … trying to manipulate you? What if politicians … sometimes lie? And technology … could it have … downsides? It’s baby’s first hot take, written at the tender age of 57. Here, for example, is what Penn has to say about millennials:
Adderall and advertisers’ chickens had come home to roost. Bob felt from feline millennials the transmissions of Instagrams blitzingly blazing from all directions … No one spoke to anyone, and when they did, it was more about those anthropomorphic arrows than it was the natural air of organically human traverse … An age group so lost to letters and steeped in transactional sex, it seemed of them that they distinguished little between an active orgasm and an acted one.
Wow, sick burn. Penn careens from “selfies are dumb” to two paragraphs on gun control to a brief aside on why hunting is bad to long stretches during which nothing happens and no point is made. It’s as if Penn thought that slam poetry was the result of getting one’s penis slammed in a car door.

12 Month Reflection
Mastery Journal Reflection 
    After 12 months in the Full Sail University Entertainment Business Master of Science program, I believe that this program has been a great experience for me personally and professionally. As an older student looking to change career fields, the study of entertainment business has been fascinating and taught me a great deal about the music field that I had not studied previously. Since I am also a job hunter, this course has also directly helped me to look at myself and my skills from the perspective of the business owner or potential investor, which in general means that I need to look at how I can impact the bottom line financially for a future employer. While this is not a new concept, it can be a bit of a shock to some people in the arts or entertainment business, but it is critical to understanding how a business operates.
Final Business Plan - March 2017
    After 12 months of coursework to study the major aspects that are involved in starting and running an entertainment business, I’ve finished writing my own business plan for ROXON MUSIC.  At the start of this degree program with Full Sail University, one of our assignments was to develop goals for each of the courses. My goal for the Final Project Business Plan course was to “Develop a realistic, workable business plan.” The business plan that I developed ended up being 31 pages that cover everything such as the company description, industry analysis and trends, target market, competition, marketing, operations and management, office and equipment requirements, and detailed financial projections for the start-up costs and first three years of operations. I believe that I have met my goal, and now have a realistic and workable business plan.
    The broad topic areas that make up the business plan include more detailed information and that reflect the research and some other business products that we developed in this course. Examples of my research include using the US Patent and Trademark Office to determine the viability of my company name, creation of a logo based on industry best practices, and using resources such as the US Census, various music Performance Rights Organizations, and the many references available from the Full Sail University library such as Lexus Nexus. One area of the business plan that was probably the most valuable and most important to any business is the financial section. In this course, we wrapped up our plan by stating realistic assumptions of the cost of starting and running a business, as well as looked at ways to obtain financing through either debt financing with a loan, or offering equity in the company to prospective investors. By covering everything from leasing office space, furniture, utilities, salaries and wages, employee benefits, taxes, marketing and advertising, health care, and calculating our cost of goods sold, I feel that I have gained a greater understanding of not only my own potential business, but of any business.
Business Plan Development - February 2017
     For the Business Plan Development course, my original goal was to learn the components of a good business plan. Now that we I am in the final week of this course; my goal has been met by writing a business plan and filling out the financial spreadsheet assignments. By producing my own business plan, I feel that I have real world experience in describing my business with enough detail to describe it to potential partners and financial backers. By delving into the details and financial requirements of starting and running a business for the first three years, my perspective has grown so that I can better understand the many details involved in the business world.
    Specifically, I have learned how to approach starting a business, how to write job descriptions, and that there are a lot of details in starting a company. Beyond the attractive parts of business such as creating products and hiring talented people, this course has required me to research and consider the day to day aspects of running a business. Deciding on how much to pay for a lease, picking out an appropriate business telephone and data plan, and shopping for office furniture may not be on the top of my fun-to-do-list, but I have to work through these issues if I am to start my own business. While working on the financials of my business, the bottom line of profitability has become a visible, tangible thing that I can see and then affect by adjusting my income and expenses. This type of insight has been very helpful in thinking about my future business plans, and has answered a lot of questions with specific information that now I can better calculate accurately. 
    Thanks to this course, I know that I can apply the business and financial concepts to my future employment, as well as my own personal finances. By understanding more about how businesses operate and seeing the many factors that impact on their bottom line, the course should also make me a smarter investor. If I start my own business, this increased understanding of costs will also give me a clearer picture when analyzing my competitors.
Entertainment Media Publishing and  Distribution - January 2017
     My on-line course with Full Sail University this month is Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution. When I started this Master’s degree program, I tried to establish goals and identify what I would learn from each course. For this course, one of my goals was to discuss music publishing with music composers and publishers. Having completed just the first half of the course, I would say that I’ve partly met that goal, because our textbook and other readings have included real world examples and experiences from others, so in a way, we are learning from composers and publishers in the business.
     In addition to learning some of the basics of traditional music publishing through agents and publishers, we’ve also started to explore publish on demand (POD) services. Our review of POD providers such as CDBaby has taught me that the media landscape continues to change, and will continue to change in the future. Certainly, this can be a great benefit to musicians, writers, film makers, and other media creators, but it also can be a minefield for the unwary. Learning more about the actual music and entertainment business world of today has made this degree program invaluable in exposing me to current trends, and given me a glimpse of what the future might bring. 
     For my own future, this course has given me a confidence boost, as well as the knowledge of resources to go out and possibly become a musical artist myself, or to start a musical business that can deliver musical products to an audience. Another important aspect of this course has been the wide range of topics covered, which gives me as a student an in-depth background to enable me to consider the many factors involved in running a business. This is critical to the success of any entrepreneur, and I can only imagine that there are plenty of well-intentioned artists that only focus on their art, and fail to pay attention to the business side of entertainment business.
Advanced Entertainment Law - December 2016
     Months before taking this class, my goal for the Full Sail University Advanced Entertainment Law course included researching the roles of music copyright organizations such as ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. Now that we are nearing the end of this class, I have to say that my goal only touched on a tiny part of the amount of material we have studied in this class. In fact, other courses over the past nine months have exposed us to these copyright issues, so in a way I could say that my goals were not met in this course, because they were met before this class started. I have worked in a variety of music related jobs for several decades, and have been aware of some of the legal issues related to my job, so this course was a fascinating fact based study that has been very rewarding. 
    Beyond basic copyright information, the Advanced Entertainment Law coursework has delved into many types of business liability, intellectual property, studied relevant course cases and decisions, and contracts. This course is not intended to make us members of the legal bar association, so, instead, it has focused us on a wide range of legal matters that affect every type of business in the real world. The study of court cases via reading decisions, as well as projects that required us to learn from legal blogs, were very effective methods of expanding our knowledge and awareness of various legal aspects of starting our own business. 
    For my own business plans, it will be critical to always obtain permission before using any intellectual property that belongs to others. From our study of how to obtain a trademark and copyright, I feel confident that I can submit the proper documentation and follow the correct procedures to run my business in accordance with applicable laws. Our study of liability will enable me to take the steps needed to consult with legal advisors and other professionals to cover any serious legal issues, injuries, and other pitfalls of being a business owner. By having discussed business contract issues in this class, I plan to always be very careful in drafting, signing, or reviewing contracts on behalf of my business or for myself. The importance of signing contracts is important for all of us, whether it’s at work or for our personal lives. 
Project and Artist Management - November 2016
    Back in April, I stated that my goal for the course on Product and Artist Management was to “Discover the responsibilities of managers.” Now that I am near the end of this course I have to say that it has enabled me to meet that goal, and has also taught me a lot more about product management than I anticipated. Maybe I was just more interested and focused on the artist management side of the course, but the product management half of the class has been very eye opening. Along the way, I’ve learned a lot about how to not only develop products, but how to brand them, market them, and how to target products for a niche or specific audience. The importance of developing relevant products not only improves the business bottom line with generating revenues, but also enables a musician or other artist to connect with their audience in unique ways.
    Connecting with fans and customers was highlighted in this week’s discussion board video titled “The Future of Social Commerce & Direct Distribution” (2015). A couple of key thoughts from this video that made sense to me about product management was to “be where your fans are,” and that using social media to connect with fans was “the next best thing to being backstage.” As a musician, these two concepts make a lot of sense to me, so I will try to use their message in my own business and in my music teaching that I do now. Another aspect that resonated with me was the reminder that show business is all about the business of the show, with a big emphasis on the word “business.” Sometimes in working with musicians I’ve seen people that are more interested in being artists than being business people. While there is nothing wrong with being more on the starving artist side of the spectrum, the reality for most of us is that we need to pay the bills and take care of a family, so the simple idea of making the music business all about the business side of things is important. 
    In addition to studying business and management, this course also dealt with leadership, which is critical to success in any group setting. In the articles “What Kind of Leader are You” (Martin, 2015), and “Six Leadership Styles” (Benincasa, 2012), I enjoyed looking at how the two authors described either three or six types of leadership. The best tip from this reading for me was to use situational leadership, which means to use whatever type of leadership works best in a particular situation. While there might be a time and place for the democratic leader to slowly gather input, and build consensus, that same leader in other situations will find that an authoritative leadership style is called for to get the best results. As a product or artist manager, I hope to be this type of flexible leader that can recognize that different styles of leadership will be needed, and to use the knowledge gained from this course in being a more effective leader.
Negotiating and Deal Making - October 2016
    At the start of my program with Full Sail University I wrote out a short list of goals for each of the twelve classes during the year. For this month’s class in Negotiating and Deal Making I anticipated that I would study and learn the basics of negotiating for business. In addition, I also looked forward to being able to apply some of my work experience to understand how the knowledge of negotiating might apply at work and to reflect on my experience to better understand negotiating with others. So far, I think that the course has met my expectations and added to my understanding of how people interact and work with each other.
    Our study of negotiating has helped me understand several principles of deal making, and been helpful to my work too. The idea of anchoring a negotiation by making the first offer or statement regarding money such as the price of a car was a new idea to me, but it makes sense to set the tone for the following discussions by taking charge and setting the stage for the specific terms that need to be decided. This simple concept should be very helpful to me in the future as I look to seek a new job in the coming months and to agree upon a salary. It’s likely that I will be moving at the same time to wherever this new job will be, so I plan to use the lessons learned in this class to make an offer to buy a house or even buy a new car.
    Several other important concepts we studied (Deutsch, Coleman, Marcus: 2014) were to be aware of bias in dealing with others and in ourselves. The “illusion of transparency” seems to be a common bias that I have seen many times, which simply means that many people tend to think that they are far more transparent to others than they really are. Similar to people that wear their heart on their sleeve or that have no filters to what they say or do, the illusion of transparency means that in dealing with others that this person’s thoughts or goals are not transparent to others, but because they think they are transparent it affects how they deal with others. Another bias that we’ve probably all seen is the “exaggeration of conflict”, where one side (or even both) perceive that they are very far apart or very different than the other negotiator. It is very helpful to recognize these types of biases so that we can better explain them or account for them in our deal making and move on to the actual differences and not the exaggerated perceived situation.
Digital Marketing - September 2016
    This month my course at Full Sail University is on Digital Marketing, and today I completed a Lynda.com course titled Facebook Advertising Fundamentals. My original goal for this course was to learn how to employ digital marketing effectively, and in this Facebook based course I found several keys that highlight the flexibility of digital marketing advertising’s capabilities. According to instructor Megan Adams, Facebook advertising can be used to target your potential customers in many ways, which includes location, demographics, interests, behaviors, connections, and in other customizable ways to hit your target audience. With Facebook being an international media platform, using the location alone to target your customers is a great way to focus your advertising goals on your local community, an entire nation, or globally. 
    Another point made by the course was that Facebook advertising is scalable to match your business budget. While the sky may be the theoretical limit in some areas, most business owners will have limits on their advertising budgets that they have to keep in mind. The Facebook options to use even a very small amount of budget in advertising creates an unlimited number of ways to reach specific audiences with a minimal budget. The ads can be scheduled to run for as little as a single day in a single city, so this makes Facebook an easy platform to use for a first-time advertiser in the social media realm.  Like the normal use of Facebook, their on-line tools to create ads is also very user friendly. With the huge number of people that interact on Facebook every day, advertising on Facebook to either engage customers, build new relations, or just to drive interest in a business would be valuable tools for any business considering to advertise on Facebook.  
    By starting to learn about the advertising process on Facebook, I could use this knowledge today in my position at the Army School of Music, since I am one of the administrators of our Facebook page. However, we currently use this page just to keep our students and their families informed of current activities, and being a part of the Department of Defense we are not really advertising. On a personal level, I would strongly consider advertising on Facebook if I start my own business. Just having a personal business page on Facebook would be one way to advertise without a budget, so it is likely that when I did move forward to spending on advertising that running the business and connecting it to that Facebook page would be worth my time and money.
Entertainment Business Finance - August 2016
    Before taking the Full Sail Entertainment Business Finance Course, my goal for the course was to explore and study business finance concepts. From the readings and assignments this month I believe that I’ve accomplished that goal. Mostly I feel that I gained an understanding of the basics of business finance, and have learned some new concepts to use in analyzing the financial health of a business. The assignments to develop a list of startup cost categories was very helpful, as was the pro forma financial plan that covered an entire first year of starting a company. Several other things I learned were how a company offers an initial public offering, and how to look at a company annual reports and other financial statements. 
    My study of The Walt Disney Company, Time Warner, and the IMAX Corporation was a lot of fun, and taught me that there is a lot more to these companies than I previously knew. For Disney, I learned that they have different ownership situations with the Disney parks in other countries. From reading the Time Warner annual report, I found out that their holdings also include HBO. Studying the Imax corporation revealed that they are based in Canada, and that they not only operate their Imax theaters, but that they also lease other theaters, as well as produce video software, cameras, and other related items. This course met my objective of learning how businesses use financial management to determine their costs and analyze their overall financial standing.
    Looking at company financial reports has been helpful in my investing for retirement, and made me a more confident stock investor. Professionally, this course has also opened some doors to information that applies to my current job as a teacher. Another positive aspect is that this course has enabled me to understand more about the time value of money.
Business Storytelling and Branding - July 2016
    In my mastery timeline, I stated that my goal for this course was to create a brand. I’ve done a lot of work towards that goal by learning the definition of a brand, and have developing some possible brand names for my own music company. Along with creating a name for my brand, I have learned how to research the US Patent and Trademark Office website to make an initial determination whether my brand name would be a good candidate for a unique name. This process is clearly just a first step on the road to creating a business proposal, but highlighted the importance of following the proper procedures with branding and trademarks. 
    We explored a good deal of material on branding and business storytelling, and learned some of the ways to tell the brand story by using archetypes. This part of the course I found very valuable not only for my Full Sail coursework, but also incorporated some basics of branding and archetypes with my own students in teaching them where I work. Understanding the basic concepts of branding and storytelling was a great addition to my ability to help my students in their own profession. 
    One of my goals was also to analyze the world’s strongest and most recognized brands in order to apply their best practices to my own brand if possible. This is a way to do what Greene describes as “internalize the details” in his 2012 book Mastery. My research showed that, according to Brand Finance magazine, Disney is currently the world’s most powerful brand in 2016. To get a closer look at this powerful brand I produced a sample video for a proposed marketing campaign using the Disney brand. 
    This course has met my goals and led me to understand at least a little bit how companies use storytelling and branding to both establish their brand identity and to continue or update their corporate story. Learning that a brand is defined by the customer makes it clear to me that any company must constantly be careful to nurture its image. The importance of a brand’s image is a lesson that I will try to remember in my own job and when I have my own company.
Project and Team Management - June 2016
    This month’s course at Full Sail University online is Project and Team Management. Before starting the course, I wrote down my expectations. My main goal was that I hoped to learn some best practice strategies for managing people effectively. Now that we are finishing this class, I would say that I’ve picked up some good information along the way on managing people based on their personalities, strengths, and their weaknesses. One great assignment we completed was to write a conflict resolution plan, which enabled me to learn several techniques, and then write them into a conflict resolution plan.
    That project met my expectations, because I learned that one of the most important parts of team management is to create harmony and foster a positive environment for your people. One simple part of creating the desired environment is to use team-building techniques that allow your people to meet one another and to then work more effectively together. From the team building techniques that we used in this class, I plan to apply them to my professional career as a fun way to build cohesion and make everyone involved with the work place to feel like a part of the team, and if possible, part of a family.  When faced with team members that are in one place or if they are remotely located, the team building techniques are simple to use and should pay big dividends in personal relationships and to create a positive spirit for everyone involved.
    One key to leading and managing others is to know their strengths and weaknesses. The assignment I just completed used a real-world business project that I created, and then I had to look at the characteristics and strengths of my team members. What made this assignment fun was that I was assigned workers like Madonna and Hulk Hogan! This exercise turned out to be realistic because it forced me to find each person’s strengths, and then decide on what role in my project would benefit most from their strengths.     My leadership style is definitely much more on the side of John Maxwell than that of Robert Greene. The kinder and gentler style of Maxwell fits both my personality and the field of music. To create music, normally with groups of people, requires much more personal contact with others than just building mechanical widgets on an assembly line. Since music deals with emotions and the feelings of both the listeners and the performers, I think it is much more effective to be able to approach the people making the music as an ally instead of as a conqueror that only uses people to achieve some egotistical end. If we consider that leadership is at least partly all about problem solving, one great way that Maxwell illustrates this part of leadership in his Developing the Leader Within You (1993) is by saying “Many years ago I decided to focus on helping people solve problems rather than helping solve people’s problems.”
    I was happy to see that one of my classes from Full Sail University would be on Executive Leadership, since most of my work experience in the military and in music has been as a leader of one type or another. One of my goals coming into this particular class was to learn how successful people lead.  After reading most of the Maxwell book, I’d say that it contains a lot of short vignettes that do just that. So far, my favorite example that Maxwell uses is Napoleon, who he describes as follows: 
     Napoleon Bonaparte, a leader’s leader, knew every officer of his army by name. He liked to wander through his camp, meet an officer, greet him by name, and talk about a battle or maneuver he knew this officer had been involved in. He never missed an opportunity to inquire about a soldier’s hometown, wife, and family; the men were always amazed to see how much detailed personal information about each one the emperor was able to store in his memory.
    While Napoleon was not a musical leader, and I am not an Emperor, I think that military leaders that follow his example will find that their soldiers will trust them more, work harder for them, and for sure will get along better. My own experience in commanding four different military bands has shown this to be true, and I’d say that any leader that works hard to get to know their followers or band members, will have more success and make better music.  
    Chapter six of Maxwell’s book addresses the attitude of the leader, and here I think he’s touched on my favorite aspect of leadership. To make this clear, he flatly states this as “Our attitudes are our most important assets,” and goes on to explain that “Our attitude may not be the asset that makes us great leaders, but without good ones we will never reach our full potential.” That positive type of approach to leadership feels much more comfortable to me than Greene in his The 48 Laws of Power (1998), where his law 11 suggests one way to treat our followers as “Never teach them enough so that they can do without you.” Greene’s negative approach to things comes across as being merely self-serving, instead of cooperative in most cases. This seems to detract from the teamwork approach that I think is required by a successful musical ensemble.
    From reading about leadership from both Greene and Maxwell, I plan to use the advice of both of them in the future to some extent, but for the most part will rely on Greene’s positive approach. Maxwell’s laws seem to be a manual on how to be a dictator, which can be valuable for the rest of us as lessons on what to beware of when working with others. My goal is to work in a music related field in the future, and to do all that I can to be an effective, positive, Maxwell style of leader.

Today I’m an active duty soldier in the US Army, but that won’t last forever! I am hoping to learn some very specific details and valuable information in subjects such as marketing and business plan design, taught by Full Sail University in the Entertainment Business Master’s degree program. At the same time, I also want to be inspired and exposed to new creative ideas that will help me move on down the road. Hey, wait a minute, I’ll be a student and a teacher at the same time, how do you like them apples?
    While my goal is to complete this degree program the best I can, that’s just one step on a longer journey in my life. Probably like any kind of journey, it likely includes starting out while carrying certain items, taking them with me, and then acquiring some new items along the way. While that almost sounds like a scavenger hunt or a trip to the grocery store, well, that kind of describes life! I’ve heard it said that “Life is what happens to you when you are making other plans”, and love the line from James Taylor’s song “Secret O’ Life” (1977) that states “The meaning of life is enjoying the passing of time”, so it seems to me that these are universal themes that have some amount of truth in them.
    To look at this another way, I don’t want to live my life to achieve X or to purchase and own Y, and then one day have the realization that maybe life is more than just one goal or just one more Ferrari in the garage. Of course, I’m willing to achieve some goals (and to have a Ferrari in the garage!), so here we go, buckle up, hold on tight, let’s get started and role this puppy down the road of life!

Is Ontario’s New $30,000 Logo Worth It?
According to recent news, taxpayers spent $30,000 on the Ontario 150 anniversary logo that’s being drawn and quartered by “critics”. But is the criticism deserved? Not really, and here’s why.

John St. is one of my favorite agencies. In 1996 when I graduated from Durham College’s Advertising program, my goal at the time was to be like Bill Bernbach (or Donald Draper) and become and Ad Man - coming up with amazing ideas for massive companies and seeing my work in TV commercials, print ads, activations and even end caps in stores. Life in the ad industry wasn’t quite as glamorous for me though, and I spent months buying radio ad space for various agency clients. It bored me to death and the commute/daily grind wore me down, so I moved onto other things - and while in a roundabout way I’m still in advertising (social media), I never ended up drinking Martinis for lunch with other ad guys at John St., McCann or JWT like I dreamed of all those years ago.
One of my classmates, however, kept at it and worked her way up through various agencies, and she brought to my attention today that the new logo for Ontario 150 is from John St. So why do I like these guys? Well, if you’ve seen their “Kids Read Mean Tweets” campaign for The Canadian Safe School Network, you’ll see why their work stands out to me. 
According to CTV, this logo was approved last April, but the cost came out recently;  and has since been reported rather unbiasedly by media channels. Yes, the same media who frequently also take shots are our Liberal Government. They’re saying that this logo cost us taxpayers $30,000.

Not a “Great” Logo
Is it a great logo? In my opinion — not overly, but I’ll say that with the caveat that truly great logos are few and far between. This one is just fine. It’s one of those logos you’d pass on the street, see and not think twice about. It’s inoffensive, simple, playful, and yes, youthful. It’s far better than the blobs used for the 2015 Pan-Am Games and light years better than the London 2012 logo, which while scary, I’ll admit, grew on me as the games wore on, and for all intents and purposes was a success from a merchandising perspective 5 years ago — even if it cost $625,000 for all the work on it.

Based on social media though, you’d think the Ontario 150 logo was designed by Donald Trump or maybe had a secret swastika or Crying Jordan  embedded in it. Twitter, radio and newspapers are going off about it. “It’s not clear, it’s not clean — it’s not balanced.”  That’s Richard Powers, the national academic director at the Rotman School of Management talking to the Toronto Star. I guess the  Toronto School of Art was unavailable for comment? I think Richard is undoubtedly a smart man, but if you look at any Olympic logo, major event logo and even some company logos in the modern era, clean, clear and balanced is decidedly old fashioned and ultimately boring and forgettable. No agency hangs it hat on rehashing simple 1960′s designs for basic logos and if they did they’re out of business. Companies don’t want basic anymore - they want edgy and leading edge. They want something that is memorable and stands out in a sea of sameness. In my opinion, Richard's synopsis was a mail-it-in-critique that I found hard to believe was used in a major newspaper. It’s almost like the Star asked everyone in advertising to slam it, they all declined to out of professional courtesy, so they tried to quote the next best thing - an “academic”.
Criticism is Money-Oriented
Most of us regular people on social media are calling it childish, weird and most disturbing of all “costly”.  Yes, the logo is getting bashed most, not for it’s basic design, but for it’s reported price tag — a mere $30,000. In other words, John St. was paid $30,000 for the initial design, 42 separate digital pieces, five separate, fully animated logos, a complete branding guide, the trademarking costs, and the agency hours to produce it all. That’s a far cry from what the media, who is touting the logo itself as costing $30,000, is reporting. Of course, if the media reported all the details or even the truth, they’d never have a story to begin with. Overall, the government is spending $100 million on the province’s 150th celebrations and infrastructure projects — so 0.03% of that is spent on this logo and everyone is losing their minds. Is it taking away Canadian jobs? Not at all, John St. is a Canadian agency based in Montreal and Toronto. So while it wasn’t outsourced to an American, British or worse, a Chinese design firm, it also It wasn’t doodled by some unpopular politicians kid either.

In my experience user generated content (UGC) for logos, packaging and marketing material is hit and miss  - it sounds like a great way to get cheap labor and ideas, but practical application is always underwhelming, and unless there is significant motivation to build something really good (like say a $30,000 prize?), the entries usually are far below what a trained student or professional would create. Also, the attention span of people for these contests is fleeting, meaning ads and promotional materials would need to be created to keep awareness high. In the end the government would have likely ended up spending far more than $30,000 just to advertise the fact that they’re having a contest to design a logo in the first place. I’m not even touching on the legal aspects, intellectual property searches on entries, and unbiased judging considerations - or their costs. It’s also worthy to note that it’s how embarrassments like the hot-at-the-time “Raptors” team name came about in the 1990′s (runners up were “Bobcats” and get this, “Dragons”). For every great user-created idea like Skydome, there’s a “Boaty McBoatface”.
