So, from what I understood, the way the Pokémon were given out in Sekiei School/Academy was through interviewing the incoming pupils and then assessing what Pokémon would fit them the best. That's why the was a specific order in which students came to fetch their partners, and why the teacher showed specific pokeball for Liko to pick.
Y'know, that's actually kinda sweet. In a way the student tells what they're like and then the school will realise who's the perfect partner waiting for them. And we can see the decisions were done well with Liko & Nyahoja and with Ann(e?) and Mijumaru. They were like, perfect fits.
it's different from Professors giving out Pokémon and letting the trainers choose. I feel like this is, in some way, a good choice for those who struggle with deciding things themselves. Those who know what they want, can go start their journey with Professors. Those who want to take things slow, can go to school and start that way. It's cool! This, ofc, is me assuming that Professors giving away Pokémon to starting trainers is still a thing here. I mean. In Paldea it's also the school headmaster, Clavell, who gave the first Pokémon. But that was a decision by us. :D
But yeh, this is what just came up on my head, thinking about how differently Liko got her Pokémon from usual showcase.

Some character notes from the first two episodes. Writing them down for future reference.
- Amethio seems to speak politely in general. When he approached Liko the first time, he referred to her grandmother as “obaa-sama” and called Liko “Liko-san” so he used suffixes both times.
- He also later used “kimi” when talking to Liko.
- Zir and Conia both refer to Amethio with the “-sama” suffix. Amethio does seem to be the bocchan type, so he might be a kind of heir or from an important lineage? The way they talk to him and seem to report to him and follow his orders makes me think that they might be indebted to him or his family. They seem loyal towards him.
- Amethio is reporting to someone who is expecting results in the preview for episode 3, so this indicates that he is following orders from someone else. This person may be the one who told him about Liko’s grandma and the pendant in the first place.
- Zir seemed to be worried about his Saidon after his short battle with Liko. Amethio’s Soulblades also immediately jumps to protect him from Nyaoha’s attack towards the end of HZ002, so it seems Amethio’s partner Pokemon cares about him. When Nyaoha was about to fall down from the ship, Amethio sent his Armorga to rescue it. While he took Nyaoha as hostage, it’s interesting that he was quick to save a Pokemon in danger (Amethio also told Conia to let Nyaoha go earlier in HZ002 when it jumped towards him to attack him in the face). Amethio doesn’t seem to hurt Pokemon needlessly so far and I’m curious how he’ll treat Nyaoha in HZ003. He doesn’t seem to be doing anything bad in the PV at the very least.
- For now, it feels like The Explorers want to avoid escalating conflicts to battles? When Zir sent out his Saidon against Liko in HZ001, he didn’t order it to use a move and Amethio only considered a battle when Friede showed up (and Friede does seem more experienced in battles since he has a Lizardon so it feels more even in this case).

so... hz ships.
right now, they’re kinda nameless. well, not exactly, with the use of japanese portmanteaus being popular. but, just to be a bit more ‘mainstream’ at least in pokémon, they deserve ‘_shipping’ names.
how about we give them some?
i did not make all of these ship names. i made some of them, but some were taken from my friends or may have gotten usage already.
let’s start off with, from what i’ve seen, one of the most popular ships in horizons, ameliko. since i don’t ship this, i’m unfamiliar with the fandom, and have no idea if they already have a name. but i’ll still give them one: pendantmissionshipping. i don’t really like it, since it’s probably not gonna end up a huge part of their characters like it is now, but it works.
next, let’s do likoroy, or royliko as some people call it. let’s start off with the fact that it literally cannot be horizonshipping. it can’t. the name’s taken, it’s been taken since the old bulbagarden shipping list. so, there’s the alternative newhorizonshipping, and it’s probably the most similar that we can get since ‘horizonsshipping’ just sounds stupid.
alright, ann x liko. it was the most popular liko ship during hz001 and hz002, but recently it hasn’t been as popular compared to other ships. the recommended one is aiboushipping, ‘aibou’ means partner in japanese. sidekick, one and only. i think it fits quite well.
the last ‘main’ liko ship is dot x liko, which i don’t really have any idea for. i do like the name ideas of superfanshipping and guruminshipping, and i think those fit best out of the ones i’ve seen recommended. i’d love to find better names for them, since i do enjoy them as a pairing.
since there aren’t many ‘main’ roy ships besides likoroy, let’s move onto my favorite platonic soulmates, furiame. the recommended name for them is freedexplorershipping, which, oh my god, fits perfectly. it’s both obscure but not absolutely ridiculous, and it’s literally perfect for them.
one of the other friede ships, friede x murdock, is one i did make a name for, which i’m very much proud of. capncrunchshipping surprisingly isn’t a taken name, and it makes sense for both characters and their jobs on the ship. rn, this may jst be my horizons otp, half because of the name. airfryershipping is another name i enjoy.
orla x mollie is definetly the most popular yuri ship in horizons up to this point. they’re just.. oh my god. i suggest the name heartstruckshipping for them, since it again, makes sense for the characters’ jobs. and it’s just a gorgeous ship name, they deserve a gorgeous name.
there are other ships, like friede x mollie, or amethio x spinel, or one of the many rarepairs i’ve already made, but the last ship i’ll talk about is zir x conia. since the name ‘explorershipping’ is taken, explorersshipping could work, as i’ve seen recommended. it doesn’t sound as goofy as ‘horizonsshipping’, and it works for them.
but, i really wanna see what other people think could be their ship names!!

Silly Little Summaries HZ001-HZ005
So I've seen other people reviewing episodes of Horizons and I really wanted to do the same but I don't have the time for full reviews. So instead I'll be writing very short, very dumb summaries of each episode in bunches of five. These are written with love of the show in mind and are just for fun so don't take them too seriously now. Without further ado here are the first five "reviews":
HZ001: Cat Girl starts school and is promptly attacked by Tofu and kidnapped by Pirates + she acquires Leafage.
HZ002: These Pirates are the good kind but Leafage gets yoinked + Tofu fights Mr. Doctor Professor and his partner Spongebob.
HZ003: Cat Girl reacquires Leafage and becomes a Pirate + proper introductions for John, Swiss, and Merryweather
Alternate Title: Cat Girl gets her p*ssy back
HZ004: Friede Jr. finds Hungry, a flag, and a dream
HZ005: Friede Jr. is still Hungry + Swiss can’t sew but bugs can

Might as well do a tier list of the Horizons episodes too(Ones that I’ve watched)
HZ004: My favorite episode so far. Loved all of the Fuecoco content and his interactions with Roy were cute
HZ009: Really enjoyed the introduction to Paldea, as well as Alex and Fidough. Good episode for both Liko and Sprigatito. Also loved the drawing of Sprigatito and Fidough Alex made
HZ011: We got to learn about Mollie’s past and her desire to help all Pokémon and not just ones that can make it to Pokemon centers, a goal I respect. We also got Paldean Wooper debut!
HZ005: While I do have some problems with this episode(Liko winning off screen and her becoming a damsel), it’s still an episode I enjoyed
HZ012: A great end to the dub episodes on Netflix for now. We got good development and I loved the growing forest scene
HZ001: Still have a problem with the crazy pacing but it’s not bad for a first episode. Loved seeing Ann and Oshawott of course as well as indigo academy. It’s a shame we barely got to see it though. Maybe we will in the future even though that doesn’t seem likely
HZ003: Good episode. Rockruff got to shine and so did Liko. Onia fawning over Sprigatito was funny and relatable and I loved the visuals during the cap and ceruledge battle
HZ002: Honestly I only really liked seeing the Pokémon in this episode. It was ok. Didn’t enjoy Liko being a damsel and acting like a Y/N character(Sorry but it’s true 😭)
HZ006: Decent episode. Roy got Fuecoco and joined the rising volt tacklers. The ending scene was good and I loved the visuals during it
HZ007: Got annoyed how they kept falling asleep during training. I know they are low experienced Pokemon but it could’ve been handled better imo. But we did get some good development at the end as Liko and Roy realized just spamming the same attack is useless and annoying to the watcher
HZ008: Dot introduction and it was meh for me. Found Dot kinda annoying this episode. The team shopping was enjoyable and I like how the cloth ended up working. Also Spoink was a cutie
HZ010: Now I loved Nemona’s introduction and seeing Pokémon like Smoliv and Pamwo but that’s honestly it. The rest of the episode was boring and I didn’t care for Brassius tbh

Pokemon Horizons got to a good start, in my opinion. Unlike the past generations, it has a different, unique, and all new vibe to it. It's taking its time to introduce us to the brand new protagonist Liko and other new characters and getting to know them without it feeling too rushed. I'll definitely keep watching new episodes every week.
