Phantom Troupe Drama CD English Translation-Track 13

CD : HUNTER×HUNTER～Next Episode Scene 3 幻影旅団 (Link)

Track 13 さらわれた団長 "The kidnapped Leader" starts at 47.15.

Disclaimer:

This is a fun bonus content from the 1999 anime that I decided to translate because I want others to enjoy it too (´꒳`)♡ Do note that some of the characters might act in an unusual comedic manner.

Summary:

This scene takes place at the Beitacle hotel after Chrollo got kidnapped by Kurapika. The troupe members decided to talk about their boss's bad habit. Killua and Gon are supposed to be listening to the whole thing too (which makes it funnier).

[Nobunaga] Boss…!

[Machi] This is because you’re..dense.

[Shizuku] That’s right. Boss is unexpectedly dense.

[Pakunoda] Yeah. If I don't bring it to him, he'll definitely miss out on his meals.

[Kortopi] He’s also greedy.

[Machi] Rather than greedy, he’s kind of possessive, isn’t he? That time I accidentally ate his pudding. After that, for two or three days, every time he saw me he said "pudding… my pudding…"

[Shizuku] Ah! The same thing happened to me too.

[Machi] Such a mild stalker, that guy.

[Pakunoda] But that part of him is cute.

[Nobunaga] That’s because you coddle him all the time, Paku. He’s always gonna be like that.

[Kortopi] Discipline is important.

[Pakunoda] Discipline..? He’s not a dog.

[Machi] If he were a dog, he would just come back on his own.

[Shizuku] Way better than boss, huh.

[Pakunoda] No way… Boss doesn’t need to be taken out for walks, nor does he wet himself.

[Nobunaga] Paku, you’re not making him look any better.

[Kortopi] More like dragging him through the mud.

[Shizuku] Ah! They’re here!

[Phinks] Explain the situation.

[Shizuku] In my case, it was almond jelly.

[Phinks] Huh?

[Feitan] What talk about?

[Machi] We’re talking about Paku coddling the boss too much, which makes him become more like a possessive stalker.

[Shalnark] I'm having trouble following all this.

[Nobunaga] In short, it's about how Boss sulks when Machi accidentally ate his pudding, and when Shizuku accidentally ate his almond jelly.

[Feitan] Straight up.

[Phinks] I get what you guys are saying. Back then, I had eaten his Azuki bar, then he stood by my bedside for three days and three nights.

[Machi] You too, Phinks?!

[Shizuku] I see that you have also been victimized by his unexpected side!

[Phinks] Why is the LEADER of the Phantom Troupe that upset over an ice cream in the first place? While he has us at his beck and call at all times.

[Shalnark] Well, that can’t be helped since we're his subordinates, but over an ice cream..? That’s kinda petty.

[Phinks] I know right?

[Pakunoda] Well, Boss is a person who likes ice cream!

[Kortopi] Pudding and Jelly-

[Pakunoda] Those too.

[Machi] That’s why I call him spoiled.

[Nobunaga] He cherry-picks the good stuff after al.

[Feitan] That, I understand. Boss the type to order from the secret menu at a sushi restaurant.

[Shalnark] Now that you mention it, he never eats the crust of a bread, right?

[Machi] That time, he ate only about five centimeters of the middle of a watermelon that had been split in half.

[Kortopi] Who only eats the strawberries on a shortcake?

[Shizuku] Ah. One time he snatched my food that I left out to eat last.

[Pakunoda] That also happened to me…

[Phinks] Not to mention he only ate the burnt rice of a stone-grilled bibimbap.

[Machi] Jeez. Our Boss is really hopeless, huh.

TL Notes & Commentary:

I've seen some people say "Chrollo eats pudding like a pig" which is half true. Kortopi called him 意地汚い, meaning "greedy, gluttonous, and piggy-like." More on how he hogs his food, less on how he eats it.

The almond jelly is 杏仁豆腐. A jellied dessert made of apricot kernel milk, agar, and sugar.

Machi actually says 粘着質ストーカ. 粘着 literally means “sticky”, so he’s really clingy and persistent. I think Machi is so done with danchou, hence the choice of words.

Random Chrollo Headcanons

It’s mentioned in one of the old hxh drama cds that he likes pudding, so he likely has a sweet tooth

He’s probably one of the least likely to get sick in the troupe

I feel like other members of the troupe question his fashion choices every day but don’t say anything since they’ve just accepted he’s like that

Will read anything and everything. Leave him with an IKEA furniture catalog or a novel by Tolstoy it doesn’t matter

I feel like as a child he showed his emotions a lot more but started to have that more stoic or calm demeanor when he started the troupe

He learned all kinds of etiquette rules just from books since those kinds of things aren’t necessary in Meteor City

I feel like he can’t swim

Loves going to operas at those grand opera houses (but he doesn’t like how suffocating some of the rich and upper class can be)

If he has a significant other, he'll likely put on a façade first before showing who he is like truthfully

something @pacificpikachu said got me on a train of thought that led to this, but i wanted to sort of sketch this idea out: mariya ise’s confident and casual, immediate confirmation that killua is in love with gon is surprising in one way, but in another, to me, it’s not surprising at all.

hunter x hunter has always been very different from other shonen with queer stuff.

think about how niuya was posting her killugon ship art on twitter openly during production and faced no consequences. the staff has always been open about “shipping” them. it’s no a coincidence. there’s literally a drama cd from 1999 of leopika called moody restaurant that’s literally just leorio and kurapika fucking while roleplaying as a waiter and customer at a restaurant. that’s real.

there’s a huge difference in staff/official attitude toward all of it from something like........ sorry im just trying to think of a random example here not trying to shit on anyone. idk narusasu or something like that. you know? it’s really openly noooot the same thing

and another thing iseven aside from the fact that’s always had lgbt characters in his work, togashi has been open about being a fudanshi since the early 90s, people just didn’t talk about it then. he first cited patalliro as an influence in an author’s note about yyh. he’s cited mineo maya. mineo maya was one of the only male BL authors from the first wave of shoujo BL back in the 1970s. like togashi, he is now happily married and has a biological daughter, but he frequently expresses himself through drag and takes photos, and is open about how much he enjoys exploring gay love and gender nonconformity through fiction. he doesn’t identify as gay, but he sure as fuck isn’t cishet!!

like togashi has always been open about the impression maya’s work made on him and it confuses and shocks western fans because of the cultural difference. western fans approach hxh from a very post-2010s queer rep perspective. but togashi has never included queer characters out of the western conception of representation. he has always included them because he likes writing queer characters and he wants to. that’s it.

and once you realize that, you also realize how a character like hisoka and killua can coexist. if you think that the only reason a writer would include a queer character would be to perform A Social Good, it makes no sense that you can have a character like hisoka, who some fans see as reinforcing negative stereotypes, and this hugely empowering and affirming character like killua at the same time. the answer is simply that togashi wasn’t thinking about only creating positive queer characters when he wrote hisoka, because he wasn’t doing it as a social good or as a chore. he is influenced by old BL and he writes queer men into his work because he likes writing them. that’s it.

god. big fucking rambling post. i guess my point is that hxh has always been an openly queer series and it just doesn’t go about it the same way we expect openly queer series to do today.

It’s been a while since the last time I open Tumblr. I hope you guys are in good condition!!

So…recently I was lurking around YouTube for some HxH old contents—specifically 1999 ver. CD Drama—and my KuraNeon trash was overly joy when I discover this video.

These past two years I was learning Japanese (but yeah my Japanese still sucks LMAO) but I can catch a bit about what Kurapika said starting from 23:36

So he was kind of reading the dialogue from the HxH manga and was mimicking some characters, which are Neon, Machi, and Kikyou Zaoldyeck.

Around 24:19 if I’m not mistaken, he said “If I were to play boss (role), it would be PikaNeon.”

I DON’T KNOW WHY BUT I’M SO HAPPY TO HEAR PIKANEON CAME OUT FROM HIS MOUTH :’))) not to mention Kurapika’s 1999 seiyuu, Yuki Kaida, was perfectly mimicking Neon’s voice there.

Summary:

Shalnark, Phinks and Feitan are helping an old lady to get to her destination. This is right before they meet the rest of the troupe in the hotel. (The origin of the Mooncake Trio.)

[Feitan] Finally we got off. Train too crowded. I hate.

[Phinks] What’s the hotel called again?

[Shalnark] It’s Beitacle Hotel. I think it’s that way.

[Old lady] Excuse me. Which way is the Ivone mansion??

[Shalnark] Huh? Are you talking to me?

[Phinks] Sorry, Granny. But we’re not from around here. You should ask someone else.

[Feitan] Get out of here or I make you suffer.

[Shalnark] Hey, don’t threaten her. She's just an old lady, you know.Grandma, we apologize, but we really don’t know.

[Old lady] It's right across from the Beitacle hotel. Didn’t you just point that way?

[Shalnark] Ah! Haha.

[Feitan] So, why Shal carrying granny on his back?

[Old lady]. I’m sorry for the trouble.

[Shalnark] It would take more time if we walk together.

[Old lady]. It’s fine. Listen to the elderly.

[Phinks] Then, I’ll gladly take one.

[Old lady] Here, you too.

[Feitan] Me? I no do anything!

[Old lady] It’s alright. Just take it.

[Shalnark] Well, we’ll get going!

[Phinks] *Munch* It's sweet! No good. It’s too sweet for me.

[Shalnark] Hmm. Sweet foods are not my thing either. Let’s just give them to Machi or Shizuku later.

[Phinks] Ah. Right.

[Feitan] *Gulp* It too sweet but...

[Shalnark] Hm?

[Feitan] ...it not bad.

TL Notes & Commentary:

The old lady actually called Phinks いかちい / 厳つい "rugged/stern look." Used to refer to someone with a scary face and seems unapproachable. And yes, Phinks was oblivious to the fact that he does look rather unfriendly.

It was really hard to purposely mess up Fei's grammar yet also make it sound adorable in a way, so I hope it turned out okay!

9 days ago I restarted Hxh (hence the newfound hype)

I've currently binge watched 99 and 2011 version +hunterpedia and episode previews compilations

What's left are:

-musicals/stage plays

-cd dramas (HxH R)

-manga (even if it may be going back on hiatus next chapter)

-the film

-theory crafters

If anyone knows where to find the subbed CD dramas I'd be thankful (either English French or Spanish)

I'll be updating if I ever find more/watch stuff from the list
