was on a roll writing & then went down a wikipedia rabbit hole. but to absolutely nobody’s surprise there is not a truman capote work that reflects even an au version of gabriella montez so i’m not sure what author to replace him with. i refuse to just cut it bc it’s suchhh an iconic line

been debating the setting of my hsmdale au. arguments below!
riverdale: perhaps the obvious answer, but i don’t want this to be a 1-to-1 recreation; the different characters, themes, etc of hsm will influence the plot. also i know nothing about the northeast.
albuquerque: where hsm is set. on the one hand it would be kinda funny but on the other i just don’t know if it fits the Vibes. there’s also nothing tying hsm to albuquerque specifically in terms of themes, sets, events, etc other than the U of A redhawks basketball team.
salt lake city: where hsm was filmed (& as such, where hsmtmts is set). listen, as someone who was raised in a different high-demand religion, mormonism & critical mormon studies absolutely falls under my special interest territory, & it would add a whole other dimension to the themes of the town not letting you leave, an evil at the heart of town, etc.
fictional town: has the benefits of being very malleable & could, unlike the real cities, be a small town as riverdale is. but there’s also no history / preexisting emotional connection to the setting to add depth there – so much of riverdale is about subverting the wholesome, all-american image built by the archie comics.
