It is in fact morning over here in New York, good morning to you too. So far I appreciate the themes of generational pressure, tradition, and trauma. I haven’t had the time to go through it repeatedly like I have with the other stuff I analyze, but I think the dead people are representations of the kind of pressure people can face to live up to the expectations of those who come before them. Sometimes they’ll embrace it, like The Perfectionists, or reject it like Jay does. Worst case scenario they’ll fully crack under the pressure like Mark does.

Each character is a radioactive ball of defense mechanisms to protect themselves from the issues they’re avoiding, Jay does it by being defensive and abrasive, Mark lost his mind and adopted the HP persona to keep himself from dropping dead, Daisy is a people pleaser who tries to keep herself busy with different tasks like Just Dance or baking, and Remington is overly confident while dying on the inside due to feeling deeply disconnected from her own sense of self.

These coping mechanisms are why Remington and Jay are initially attracted to each other, but also reject each other. It’s the safety that comes with knowing someone will play with your loose screws, they can see the cracks and won’t be scared of them. Having a certain level of loathing towards one another also keeps an emotional distance where they can keep from being hurt, keeping their hearts locked up in chains. It’s building walls up around themselves so they’re safe, but it also has the downside of meaning they’re permanently alone on an emotional level.

Daisy I have to go over a bit in my head, but I think she’s an emotionally dependent mess who’s chronically lonely and is desperate for any sort of connection after Mark goes missing, but has a horrible fear of the past repeating itself so she never takes any risks in life. She’s just the “this is fine” dog while cookies burn in the fire that’s destroying her life.

That’s what I’ve got so far, I’ll refine my thoughts and findings as I have more time to go over all of it.

Yeah! I wrote it when I was 15 I think. It followed a gender bent version of Remy and Jay (but I'll just use Remy and Jay for this description) -- I think the plot is pretty much the same until the superheroes thing the musical has -- instead of camping out and doing reckless stuff with HP, Remy gets captured in a facility for high numbers. Dr. Morello is basically running two organizations at the same time (I think his daughter is taking care of the facility?), but Dr. Morello is essentially using the cottage as a front to send high numbers to the other organization. I think the therapy is also a weekend thing in the novel and not an extended stay? But yeah, once she's in this facility, Remy gets tortured through prolonged exposure to her voices until her powers surface, and by exploring the facility's dingy corridors she sees HP and another high number girl, who really wants to attack and eat her I think. Together, they bust out of the facility.

At the same time, Jay is doing the same thing she does in the musical -- seeing Remy's POV in dreams through Clara and Joyce's voices. Daisy and Jay head out to rescue Remy. At this point of the novel, I was having trouble finishing it up, so I'll describe the way it ends but I did have other more expansive ideas for it too lol. I think they meet up kinda halfway in the woods, have to fight with the other high numbers, realize Dr. Morello's behind all of it and go blow up the cottage? Or something of the sort. I think as I was planning this latter part of it, I also played with the idea of transforming into an animal/an earlier life if you were exposed to your voices for Too Long, but never did much with that. I think a difference between the novel and the musical is you are way more lucid when you develop Perfectionist powers in the musical lol, while in the novel it's more about turning to a more animalistic state (novel!Remy without her accessory kinda just behaved like a creature.)

And that novel was based on an earlier start of a novel I wrote when I was 13.....where Remy is a girl I think? I think Daisy and Jay are guys instead. And HP still existed. Remy and Jay were also childhood friends. I think Clara and Joyce were straight.

In both the novel versions, some funky details were also that animals fucking hate Perfectionists because they sense (and are jealous of? unsure) their "perfect" past lives (the reason Remy's parents sent her to the cottage in both is because she gets attacked by animals.) A lot of the 13-year-old novel version featured the protagonists fighting beasties. And in that early novel version, the way to ward off the animals was by using perfume lmao (because it was really artificially made? I think? I don't remember the 7th grader logic.)

he needs some super feral energy in his outfit that screams “i just killed a man, ripped out his intestines, and nibbled at them a bit bc i was hungy but won’t realize I did that until you tell me i did that for the 7th time in a row”
