My Words: Cold, Ache, Hold, & Return
thank you @txstars for tagging me!! please enjoy selections from only my most indulgent wips because it worked out that nothing w even a veneer of respectability had these words 💖
cold
Jason set his laptop to the side when the water started getting cold and carefully lifted Otter’s long, wiggly body out of it with a towel fresh from his dryer. He dried him off, fluffing up his fur until it was sticking out everywhere and soft to the touch. Otter seemed to like when Jason took special care to rub the towel over his paws. They kind of reminded Jason of racoon paws — the way they were almost shaped like tiny human hands, just softer and webbed with claws that were, for the moment, tucked carefully away. Otter-Otter’s eyes definitely reminded Jason of his regular human eyes. They were big and brown and too-serious as he stared into Jason’s while he bundled Otter up in the towel to carry him into the guest room for the night.
ache
Jake had just said his heats were like having the flu, which probably meant that whatever he was feeling now was close enough to the flu to make this issue pressing, keep him out of the game tonight. Aches and pains or whatever, Jason figured. “You haven’t been around my fuck-me pheromones,” Jake said. He still sounded a little like he was trying to warn Jason off, but he hadn’t said anything close enough to a ‘no’ yet for Jason to feel like he should drop it. “I’m a beta,” he reminded Jake, who snorted out a slightly derisive sound like he thought Jason was being an idiot for stating the obvious.
hold
“I’m not sure I trust a twenty year old’s idea of ‘something good’, is all,” Joe said. He pulled a wry face. Maybe, like Wyatt, he’d heard Wyatt’s age spoken out loud like that and realized it kinda didn’t matter if Joe didn’t think he should be trusted with naming a baby; the powers that be had trusted Wyatt with raising one. He tightened his hold on her in his arms, instinctive, and tried not to think too hard about the way Joe’s face softened into something that wasn’t pity, just close to it. “Just don’t give your baby a name she’ll never find on a keychain, okay?”
return
When they returned to the hotel to hurriedly pack up before their quick flight back to Dallas, Otter was a person again, which Jason was relieved about. Maybe half because it meant he probably wouldn’t have to restrain a freaked out otter on the plane, but, whatever. Otter had no way of knowing how much his tiny sharp teeth hurt when he was, well, an otter, so Jason wasn’t going to hold it against him now that his teeth were stupidly straight and perfect and normal again.
