Despair drove Saghar Siddiqui, an unsung genius of his time, to seek solace in drink and drugs. Remembering Saghar Siddiqui on his death anniversary.
Muhammad Akhtar 1928-1974 (pseudonym) Saghar Siddiqui was an Urdu poet, in spite of his ruined and homeless alone life, he remained famous and successful till and after his death. when he died, he left nothing but a pet, his dog, who also died on the same foot path where Saghar died a year later.
Saghar Siddiqui was born in 1928 in Ambala (British India) to a well-to-do middle-class family. There are few historic records of Saghar's personal life. He rarely spoke to any one in this regard and most of what is known of him tends to be from witness accounts. Siddiqui was the only child of his parents and spent the early years of his life in Ambala and Saharanpur.
He was home tutored and received his early education from Habib Hassan a family friend. Young Akhtar was much impressed by Habib Hassan, and he got interested in Urdu poetry because of him. Siddiqui started writing poetry as a child. He moved to Amritsar(Punjab), in search of work and used to make wooden combs while writing Urdu poetry. For some time he used Nasir Hijazi as his pen name, but later he switched to Saghar Siddiqui. When 16 years old, he regularly started attending mushairas (poerty recitals) in Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Gurdaspur. In 1947, when he was 19, he migrated to Pakistan during the independence and settled in Lahore. In those days with his slim appearance, wearing pants and boski (yellow silky cloth) shirts, with curly hair, and reciting beautiful ghazals in a melodious voice, he became a huge success. He had some tragic turns in his life. Siddiqui continued to write poetry for the film industry and moved on to publish a literary magazine. The magazine was a critical success but a commercial flop. Disappointed, Saghar shut down the magazine. In his later life, he fell into depression, financially ruined and addicted to drugs.
Siddiqui chose to stay in cheap hotels, rather than settle into a house given by the government to refugees. He would pay the rent with meager amounts earnt by selling his poems to magazines. Sometimes he would have to sell his poetry to other poets for a few rupees. He would use the waste paper spread around to light fires to stay warm during winter nights. Some of these poems were re-sold by these people as their own work.
Within a decade of coming to Pakistan, he became disillusioned as he saw corruption and nepotism being rewarded at the expense of genuine talent. In despair, he turned to morphine, buying it from janitors of hospitals in Lahore. As friends and strangers continued to exploit him, Siddiqui fell further into despair and was soon turned out of hotels and had to live on the street as a beggar. He was often seen along Circular Road of Lahore, and in Anarkali Bazar, Akhbaar Market, Aibak Road, Shah Alami, and around the Data Darbar area. He would often hold mushairas on the footpaths, in candle light. He continued to write poems, though most of them are lost and unpublished.
In early 1974, Siddiqui was found dead on a street corner of Lahore. On 19 July 1974, he was found dead on a roadside in Lahore near alfalah building the mall, at the age of 46. His dead body was found one early morning outside one of the shops. He was buried at the Miani Sahib graveyard. His dog also died a year later, reportedly at the same spot. Despite his shattered life, some of his verses are among the best in Urdu poetry.
The sensitive and gifted teenager was excited by the prospect of becoming a citizen of a newly created country and at once got down to writing a national anthem for it.

28th January 2019
After a relaxing breakfast of bircher muesli and pancakes with maple syrup, we were picked up by our guide for the morning, Sujhi, and headed off to visit the biggest mosque in Delhi. It was the same routine with the shoes, but fortunately you could keep your socks on.
The mosque was built at the time of the Mogul Emperors and has a large square in front of the main building, with two tall minarets on either side.
Tumblr media
We climbed to the top of one of the minarets, via a spiral staircase, and the view was well worth the effort of the climb. Although the atmosphere is a little murky in Delhi, due to the air pollution, you could see for miles. There was also a flock of kites circling above the mosque, something you’d never see in the UK.
Tumblr media
From the mosque we took a rickshaw ride around the narrow streets of the local market, which was very interesting. Even though the streets are too narrow for cars, motor scooters and cycles bomb up and down, and make life difficult for the young lad who was pedalling us. The rickshaw had no gears and the boy was hardly heavy enough to use his weight to make the pedals turn. My 20 gear road bike back home, with its carbon frame, is in another world. The electricity supply to the various houses and shops was exactly how you see it in TV documentaries, completely jumbled and tangled up, with the odd length of cable left dangling down, with no indication whether it has been disconnected or is still live. Best to keep your hands by your sides!
Tumblr media
From here went to visit Mogul Emperor Humayun’s tomb. Dating from the mid-fifteen hundreds it was built under the guidance of his grieving wife. Humayun’s son subsequently built the Taj Mahal as a token of love for his wife, who died prematurely. There are marked resemblances between the two structures, and Humayun’s Tomb is regarded as a precursor for the Taj Mahal.
Tumblr media
We wandered around the site, and throughout the building, and the location of the tomb was particularly evocative, a single marble sarcophagus standing in the centre of an octagonal, marble-lined hall, with a large dome for the roof.
Tumblr media
There were hundreds of schoolchildren on outings to the site, and loads of them were keen to practice their English, with a “Hello, how are you?”, and one or two asking us if they could take a selfie picture with us. We didn’t want to disappoint so went along with it, however, it was a bit of a relief when we left the site and peace returned!
We then visited the Sikh temple in the old part of Delhi, and although it was nowhere near as big as the Golden Temple in Amritsar, it was still an interesting place to visit. Like Amritsar, they cook food each day and distribute it free of charge to anyone who needs a meal, and there were hundreds queuing for what may be their only meal of the day.
After we had been dropped back at the hotel, we had a wash and brush up, and set off on our own to visit the Lodhi Gardens. This was time set aside for our own purposes, so we headed off for the Metro train to take us to the gardens. This a large open area in the centre of Old Delhi, and contains the remains of several large tombs and mosques.
Tumblr media
We wandered around visiting the various buildings, and after we had seen enough we decided to wander back to catch the Metro back to the hotel.
As we walked, we noticed some young people playing cricket and paused a while to stand and watch. They saw our interest and invited me to take the bat, which I did somewhat reluctantly knowing how keen the Indians are on their cricket. However, I was bowled a dolly of a ball which was just waiting to be smashed for 6, I took a massive swing and missed, and was bowled out first ball. However, I called a no ball as it had bounced twice and stayed in to bat. I swung and missed at the next one, but caught hold of the third ball beautifully and it sailed back over the bowler’s head. I decided to retire then, and we posed together for photographs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then headed back to the Metro, pausing to watch some kingfishers diving from a tree into a pond which had some small fish swimming around in it. Kingfishers are quite common in Delhi apparently. We made one quick diversion to find a coffee shop, and had a refreshing coffee and cake. It was just like Australia and New Zealand all over again!
Tumblr media
Once on the Metro we decided to get off at the stop before we set out from, as it looked closer to the hotel than our starting point. Bad decision!! When we got out of the station at Kashmere Gate it was dark, and we couldn’t see any road signs to correspond with what we had been looking at on the map. So after several fruitless minutes we returned to the Metro to go to the next stop where we had started out. However, Kashmere Gate station is huge and we struggled to find the platform. However, we found it eventually and boarded the train for the one stop to Civil Lines station. The next problem then arose, which of the three exits do we take? We chose the wrong one and ended up walking in the opposite direction, until we realised and turned around. Still our surroundings didn’t look familiar and it seemed like ages before we saw the entrance to the station that we had taken earlier that afternoon. By taking the wrong exit we added about a quarter of a mile to our walk back to the hotel.
Eventually we landed back in the hotel, grumpy, hot and dusty for our efforts, and after a quick wash we went down to the bar for two large G&Ts, which tasted really delicious. We vowed not to make the same mistake the following day when we were planning to take the Metro to the archaeological gardens.

Travel Guide and Information for India first-timers|Travel and trips
India is all these things, and more. How can you prepare for the best travel and trips ? Start with our advice to travel to India for the first time!
Keep Calm
In addition to its beauty and wonder, India enjoys a reputation often deserved by its vendors, frauds and other problems. There are ways in which you can reduce the chances of overloading or cheating, but you will have some confrontations with scammers on your trip, so stay abreast of yourself and remember that agreements look so good that they are not usually correct. In particular, be careful of taxi drivers and coaches who insist on taking you to specific hotels, shops or travel agencies: Your commission will be added to your bill.
The most important advice for any time-saver in India is to try to calm down, no matter what happens. The frustration that floods easily in India, the ability to control it, breathe deeply and move on, is the key to enjoying your time here. If you’re stressing on losing some money or being cheated, choose a moment to think about the amount you’ve already lost and whether it’s worth worrying.
Slow down
Many people try to cram a lot into a visit to India and consume it later. To get the most out of your trip, focus on some places instead of trying to record as many as possible. You may be seeing a place or two places more slowly than just seeing a lot of places, but have no time to appreciate them. Spend a few days in one place, feel less stressed, gain a deeper understanding of where you are, and have more time to get to know people you know; exchanges with hospital residents will certainly lead you to the most memorable moments of your ttravel and trips.
Escape the crowds
With more than a billion locals, many parts of India are full. The noise and chaos may be pleasant, especially if there is a festival in the city, but it is easy to reach the saturation point. Luckily, India has many quiet havens, so plan for a relaxing holiday on your trip. To keep the batteries charged, spend a few days or weeks in the city, followed by a few days or weeks in the countryside or in a small town. For internal peace (outer), head south to the back and coasts of Kerala, north to the hilltop stations in India or the Tibetan-influenced Himalayas in Ladakh, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh
Travel Guide and Information
Keep your health
India has a fairly bad reputation among travelers for the so-called Delhi belly (stomach upset). No one wants to get sick, especially if you are on a shorter trip, so you should take steps to avoid the dodgy tumor. Never drink tap water, avoid any food that may have been washed in it. As a precautionary measure, avoid eating ice cream, ice cream salads, and fruits that you have not only peeled. Let your stomach adjust for a few days before embarking on a huge food feast in the streets. Whenever you buy street food, apply the same hygiene standards as you would anywhere else. Do the food cooks freshly cook or have they been there for a while? Is procrastination busy with many customers or is it just attracting fly huts?
Many Planning Advice get vegetables while they are in India, which is not a bad idea, because eating too much meat will do much more harm than poorly cooked vegetables. In addition, many Indians are vegetarians, so it may provide the country’s best choice in the world of vegetarian foods. If you eat meat, make sure you cook well, and stick to kiosks and restaurants packed with locals (the best standard for hygiene standards).
When you are on the road, you may find that you are forced to use some less than a healthy toilet stop, but these should not be health risks. Toilet paper is rarely provided (although it can easily be installed from hotel rooms!), But the way the left hand water jug favored by many locals can be good if you carry the soap with you so you can wash your hands properly afterwards. Antibacterial wipes and antibacterial gel are also useful to keep your daily bag clean at the last minute before eating with your fingers.
Choose the perfect route
India fills a lot in a huge area, and you will not have time to see it all in one trip. Think about what matters to you, what you love to do, how much time you have, and plan your trip accordingly. Be realistic about how much you can fit. Instead of trying to see the entire country, you might get more of your trip if you focus on the south or the north. However, domestic flights — or long fun trains in the air — are plentiful and inexpensive so you can jump from north to south if you want to taste both worlds. The track section at the top of Lonely Planet guides to India can be of great help, but here are some possible ways to get the ball:
Classics: India’s most popular tour is the classic Golden Triangle. If the time is short, this is a great introduction to three of the best destinations in India, Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, and you can press it in a week if you do not mind moving every other day. Start in Delhi with sights such as Humayun Tomb and Red Fort, before you reach Agra and tour the Taj Mahal, Agra Castle and Fatehpur Sikri. Then go to Jaipur to explore the pink city and castle in Amber, before returning to the magnificent Delhi markets to spend a final shopping tour before traveling home.
Religious sites: If you have temples, you will find them everywhere, but in northern and central India, you will be really spoiled for choice. There is the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the geographically carved edifice in Khajuraho, the rock-carved Sunkunari Temple, and a collection of Jin temples filled with white marble and milk in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The temples in the south are another thing again, with towering Juboram towers covered with statues; there are stunning examples in Hampi, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Tiruvannamalai, and beautifully decorated temples of caves in Ajanta and Ellora, and Elephanta Island near Mumbai.
The Magic of the Mongols: Islamic architecture lovers will find some wonderful monuments in Delhi, the home of the Red Castle, mosques and minarets in Qutb Manar Complex and Humoyan Tomb. Nearby, you can enjoy the magnificence of the most magnificent Mongols in Fatehpur Sikri and Agra, the home of the Taj Mahal, before exploring the magnificent Mughal fort complex in Rajasthan, including the Jaisalmer, the magnificent Arabian Castle.
Beaches and waterways: Head south to enjoy the best beaches in India. I drink Bilburi (puffed rice, noodles, green mango and hot sauce) on the beach of Jerju Chubate in Mumbai before heading south towards the sand and sun in Goa. Choose between the beaches of Goa: Arambol, Vagator, Palolem and the best places, or try the beaches of Kovalam and Varkala with black sand in Kerala, as well as the lesser-known golden sands in the north of the state. Kerala is also famous for its backgammon areas, where you can rent a houseboat or boat and let the world slide smoothly. Similarly, there is the beautiful Dal Lake in Srinagar in Kashmir, where, Planning Advice depending on the security and political situation, you can see how the mountains rise in fog from the window of the nut window to a traditional wooden houseboat.

6 places you should go to enjoy Diwali in India
Diwali is one of the most important festivals celebrated in India. This festival of lights symbolizes several things, like the triumph of good over evil, hope over despair and so on. Before Diwali, there is a clean-up drive at almost everybody’s homes, all over India and during the 5-day festival, there are numerous rituals that are performed, each unique in its own way. Diwali is celebrated in the honor of Lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana who returned to the Kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Diwali celebrations differ all over the country. While lighting lamps and bursting crackers form the main part of the festivities, there is much more to this festival. Here’s a list of places that one should visit to catch the celebrations during Diwali in India.
1. Jaipur:
Tumblr media
To understand the celebrations of Diwali in Jaipur, one has to experience it. The pink city is adorned in varied colours and the lights that will greet you will be like none that you have seen before. Apart from the houses being decked up, the entire markets are decorated with lights. One can also see musicians on the streets of the city. The markets here sell over a thousand types of earthen lamps in many shapes, sizes and colours. The decked up markets are flooded with traditional clothes and handicrafts. What more, the best illuminated market wins a prize. Apart from a feast to the eyes, you can treat your palate to delicious sweets and food items.
2. Varanasi:
Tumblr media
Varanasi, also known as Banaras is considered as one of the holiest cities in India. It is always abuzz with some kind of celebrations, and Diwali in Varanasi is something that one shouldn’t miss. On the occasion of Diwali, all the Ghats in Varanasi are lit up with thousands of diyas, and the mesmerising view certainly earns Varanasi the title of ‘City of Lights’ in Diwali. Fireworks can be seen and heard all night long and to truly be a part of it, one should rent a hotel near the riverside. The Special Ganga Aarti on the illuminated ghats is a different experience altogether.
3. Kolkata:
Tumblr media
Kolkata has its own style of celebrating Diwali. Kali Puja coincides with the festival of Diwali. Goddess Kali is worshipped on this occasion and you will get to witness unique offerings made to her during this fest. Apart from sweets and flowers, fish, meat and even a buffalo calf is offered to the Goddess. The city is lit up with lamps, bulbs and candles all over. A dazzling show of fireworks is a part of the celebrations too. Kolkata, also known as the city of joy, lives up to its name during Diwali.
4. Amritsar:
Tumblr media
A Punjabi adage goes ‘Dal Roti Ghar Di Diwali Amritsar Di. (There’s nothing like homemade food and Diwali in Amritsar.’ This is indeed true. Diwali here, coincides with the celebrations of Bandi Chhor Divas, a Sikh festival. It marks the return of Sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, who freed himself and Hindu Kings from the prison of Islamic ruler Jahangir and arrived at the Golden temple in 1619. The Golden temple glitters even more as it is draped in lights and the lake is lighted up with countless oil lamps and candles. Fireworks and festivities during Diwali in Amritsar is certainly a memorable experience.
5. Goa:
Tumblr media
Diwali in Goa and its surrounding areas begins on the day of Naraka Chaturdashi. While cleaning the houses is a norm all over, people decorate their front doors and windows with kandeels (lanterns). Paper made scary-looking effigies of Narakasura, filled with grass and firecrackers, symbolising evil are made on Naraka Chaturdashi, and then burnt down around four in the morning the next day. While you can observe the traditions in Goa, you can also enjoy a vacation by visiting the beaches and casinos in Goa.
6. Kovalam:
Tumblr media
Kovalam in Kerala has made it to the list not coz of the fervor of Diwali here, but because Diwali is not a major festival at this destination. While the entire nation participates in the celebration of the festival of lights, celebrations in Kerala are low key. So if you want an escape from the hustle bustle of Diwali celebrations, Kovalam is certainly the place to be. As celebrations are on a very low scale, you can enjoy the picturesque beauty of the location.
As mentioned earlier, Diwali celebrations differ in different parts of the country, and of course there are many more places that you could visit apart from these popular ones. Feel free to tell us where you’d rather celebrate Diwali this year!
Tip: If you want a closer feel of the celebration in a particular city (or village), opt for a home stay. Believe us, it’ll be a memorable experience.

5 Great International Destinations for Budget Travelers
One of the most important determinants of an international travel budget is the destination you choose to visit. Some countries are always bargains, while the price of other destinations may rise and fall with the nation’s economic climate, political situation, and exchange rate.
See Also on Kiplinger: 20 Best Travel Sites to Save You Money
The good news for travelers on a budget is that there are many economic options that offer great value for hotels, transportation, and activities. Here are some of the cheapest destinations to consider in 2017.
The Golden Temple in Amritsar. iStock
India
From tea gardens of Darjeeling, to the white sand beaches of Goa, to the tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh, and the Great Living Chola Temples (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) in Tamil Nadu, India has something for everyone. Take a cruise on the extensive system of coastal canals in Kerala, or stroll the temples of Varanasi, an ancient city considered holy to both Buddhists and Hindus.
The price of travel in India is hard to beat. The cost of living ranks near the bottom of Numbeo’s 2017 Cost of Living Index. When I was backpacking in India, I was able to get by on a budget of $200–$250 a month (and the exchange rate has only improved since then for Americans).
This kind of travel budget is hard to imagine anywhere else in the world. Granted, there were trade-offs. The hotels I stayed in cost only about $6 for a double, but the quality varied greatly.
Food quality and prices also run a wide range. You can get a bite from a street stall for 50 cents or less, while a vegetarian meal in a simple restaurant usually costs $1–$2. As with any destination, if you want to spend more, you can usually find more expensive options, too, unless you’re in a very small town off the beaten track that doesn’t see much tourism.
The Himalayas in Nepal. iStock
Nepal
Advertisement
Nepal is ranked a bit higher on Numbeo’s list, but it is still an extremely affordable country for travel. In my experience, a typical meal of delicious momos (steamed meat or vegetable dumplings) or traditional noodle soup costs about 75 cents.
Of course, costs are variable, especially depending on the types of activities you pursue. The Nepalese Himalayas are full of opportunities for outdoor recreation, including trekking, mountaineering, and whitewater rafting.
If you are an experienced hiker, you can buy a map for less than $5 and strike out on your own, but less advanced hikers may feel more comfortable with a knowledgeable guide. According to EliteTrekkers, a service that matches trekkers to guides and porters, hiring an experienced guide costs $28 per day.
See Also on Kiplinger: Travel Insurance to Protect Your Vacation
Keep in mind that more technical trips to summit different mountains come with a very different cost, requiring the use of a guide and experienced team of support crew members. Expect to pay $60,000 or more for a trip to the summit of Mt. Everest, including gear, permits, food, and accommodations in Kathmandu before and after the expedition.
San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. iStock
Mexico
Mexico is the 10th cheapest country in terms of cost of living, according to Numbeo. For travelers departing from the U.S., Mexico is particularly attractive because the cost of airfare to your destination is often very affordable. While flying to India out of the United States can cost around $800 round trip, I consistently find round-trip flights to Mexico from major U.S. departure cities such as Houston for as little as $200. Of course, prices depend on your travel dates and where you are flying from. Traveling during low season will lower your prices significantly.
Moreover, Mexico has a fairly developed tourism sector with a wide range of accommodations to fit most budgets and comfort levels.
Many Americans already know the beautiful beaches of Playa del Carmen, Cabo San Lucas, and Puerto Vallarta, but there are many other must-see destinations in Mexico, including the monarch butterfly reserves of Michoacan and Copper Canyon in Chihuahua. My favorite colonial towns include Zacatecas, Guanajuato, and Taxco. These towns were historically rich from the silver mines, and preservation efforts have left them with a beautiful architectural legacy.

A Christian Orthodox church in Old Orhei, Moldova. iStock
Moldova
Moldova, a country in Eastern Europe that shares a border with Romania and Ukraine, is also among the 10 cheapest countries, according to Numbeo. This former Soviet republic offers a rural, off-the-beaten path appeal, as one of Europe’s least visited countries, according to Lonely Planet.
The countryside is made up of large forests, rolling hills, and vineyards with plentiful wine-tastings. Moldova is also home to numerous historical ruins and monasteries sure to interest history buffs. If you’re looking to travel cheaply this could be the European destination for you.
The Acropolis in Athens, Greece. iStock
Greece
With it’s sunny island destinations, delicious food, and iconic historical sites such as the Acropolis, Greece offers plenty to do for travelers. While Greece continues to experience economic problems, prices are especially low for Western travelers. Greece made Rough Guide’s list of 20 cheapest countries to travel to now.
See Also on Kiplinger: The Travel Tipping Quiz
According to Lonely Planet, a budget traveler staying in dorms and eating at local markets can get by on around 60 euros ($65) a day. Compared to many European countries, that’s a bargain. If Greece has always been on your list of places to see, now may be the time to go.
