Utena Tenjou, Wakaba knows, has raised a Ralts since childhood. The poor thing seemed to have had a rough life previously, and Utena has a soft spot for things she can protect. It’s her partner Pokemon, and it had since grown into a healthy Kirlia.
What surprises Wakaba is when Utena walks into Ohtori with a full-grown Gardevoir, graceful and elegant next to a girl wearing shorts who is best known for being able to outplay the boys in basketball.
“We talked about it, me’n Kirlia,” Utena admitted sheepishly as she stretched, her Gardevoir gently pushing on her back to deepen it. “And we both were hoping she’d be a Gallade! But… I guess we both spaced out and forgot to find a shiny stone in time.”
Hard to find a stone when laying in a coffin, after all.
When Utena challenges Sayonji the second time, her Gardevoir dutifully climbing the seemingly endless stairs by her side, the ring the prince had given her began to resonate strangely. By the time she reached the top, Utena was attired as a proper duelist, and Gardevoir almost seemed to be floating serenely as a mega-evolution.
Anthy’s Roserade looks on serenely, as unbothered by the duels as her mistress.
“I’ve had this little one since she was a Budew,” Anthy later confided to Utena as she made tea. “I almost wanted her to stay that way, she was so cute and sweet. But you have to let roses bloom, or else they begin to rot.”
“But a Roserade?” Utena wondered aloud, nibbling on a cookie. “I mean, she’s beautiful, but you seem more the type to stop at Rosalia.”
Anthy smiled her slight, gentle smile as light glinted off her glasses. “Oh, I just happened to stumble over a shiny stone one day. Quite the stroke of luck, really!”
Did the author forget that Gallade requires a male Kirlia and a dawn stone? Perhaps. Does it also still fit the symbolism and themes of Utena? Honestly, probably better than what I originally intended.
Gardevoir, according to the Pokédex, will create a black hole to protect their trainer. Utena’s Gardevoir does not do this once, even at The End of the World, when swords fly. Because Gardevoir will protect her trainer and aid her, but if her trainer makes a choice, she will honor it.
Roserade is perhaps Anthy’s, perhaps a gift from her older brother. Maybe she once had a Rosalia of her own. The flashbacks were pretty confusing. The shiny Roserade of the black rose arc just adds more confusion.
