this website is REALLY good at circulating mythological misinformation and alternative narratives presented as fact about certain figures (medusa, persephone, cybele/great goddess types) and honestly i think we could afford to spend a little more misinformation energy on arachne

#would anyone like to make up a pre-ovid arachne myth? open invitation #bonus points if the implication is that ovid twisted the story to pit two women against each other #*flashbacks to reading that ann suter article reconstructing the prehistory of the procne and philomela myth*#look we just cannot say anything about that story prior to 431 bce #hmm thinking about possibly assimilating pallas (as in apollodorus bibliotheca 3.12.2) to arachne #see the problem though is that ill say something like that and then ill halfway believe it #bc it does make sense with what earlier fragmentary references to arachne we have and ovids patterns of altering established narratives #man id be so good at baseless speculation about lost texts/myths if that were still a legitimate thing to be doing #mine
