FEDS Paper: Equilibrium Yield Curves with Imperfect Information

Hiroatsu Tanaka I study the dynamics of default-free bond yields and term premia using a novel equilibrium term structure model with a New-Keynesian core and imperfect information about productivity. The model generates term premia that are on average positive with sizable countercyclical variation that arises endogenously. Importantly, demand shocks, in addition to supply shocks, play a key role in the dynamics of term premia. This is in sharp contrast to existing DSGE term structure models with perfect information, which tend to rely on large supply shocks to generate time-variation in yields and term premia. With imperfect information, a shock to productivity is a supply shock, while a shock to signals about productivity that do not lead to actual changes in productivity acts as a demand shock. Nevertheless, an increase in economic activity generates more information about productivity, regardless of which type of shock it arises from. Moreover, a decrease in economic uncertainty leads to a decline in term premia as longer-term bonds are risky on average. Inavember Day 4: Chatacter in Daily Life

"Oh yeah?! Well your hair fucking sucks! Who even let you dye it?!"

It had started out as a small thing. An offhand comment, a snarky quip back. Neither of them expected this to turn into a full blown argument. Yet, here they were, in the middle of the street, yelling at each other. And it was about who would pay for their date of all things.

The frigid November wind was no match for the cutting words of the pair as they exchanged verbal blows. Passerbys glanced worried at the couple, wondering if they should intervene, but ultimately deciding to let the couple argue it out.

"Oh shut your pretty mouth. If we're dissing each other's hair, then what about yours?" Hiroto taunted. Being 2 cm taller than your boyfriend had it's perks, and Hiroto was definitely abusing that privilege. He was on his toes, leaning over Atsuya. "Your hair looks like you stuck a fork into a socket this morning, looked at it and said 'yea, looks good.' I can't believe your brother even let you go out looking like that."

Atsuya sputtered in anger, searching for a suitable action to do to convey his anger and fustration at his annoyingly pretty boyfriend. "W-well at least I don't have daddy issues." He stomped his foot, almost childishly.

Hiroto recoiled, face a comical expression of disgust and offense. "Well, I have money to pay for our dates because of my dad." He retaliated, crossing his arms with a huff.

"Exactly!" Atsuya jumped at the chance. "That's why I should be paying for this date!"

"W-wha?"

"since you have all the money in the world, and I don't, I should pay for our date today." Atsuya proclaimed, smugly. "That way, my sacrifice is more meaningful and shows that I love you more. So there."

There was a moment of silence, Hiroto trying to face the fact that his boyfriend had outsmarted him. "F-fine. But only this one." He grumbled, snatching Atsuya's hand. Atsuya let out a victorious whoop, but was quickly silenced by Hiroto kissing him. Oh well, still a win in his books.

Japanese female cavalry

Chancellor Tôin Kinkata (1291-1360) once mentioned in his journal a  “predominately female cavalry” without giving further explanations. Since he noted that they were from western Japan, it may imply that women from the west, regions far from the big capital cities, were more likely to fight in battles. Another hypothesis is that it could be a metaphor, aiming at degrading the army by feminizing it. 

Even if we can’t know the truth about this particular case, female cavalry fighting on the battlefield remains within the realm of possibilities. Epic accounts such as the Heike Monogatari recount that Tomoe gozen served as a general under Kiso Yoshinaka at the end of the 12th century. Women forming cavalry forces were also reported during the Sengoku Period (c. 1467 – c. 1600).

Archeological discoveries also provide fascinating elements that could imply a wider involvement of women in armies than what was previously envisaged. When the skeletons of warriors who fought during at Senbonmatsubara (1580) were discovered on the site of the battle, it appeared that roughly 30% of them belonged to women. Japanese archeologist Suzuki Hiroatsu explains that it is common to find bones of women or children where castle sieges took place, since they usually participated in the defense. He, however stresses the fact that there was no castle on this site and concludes that “these women came here to fight and to die” and could have been part of the army. Excavations conducted on other battle sites across Japan gave similar results.
