Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation 4-5
Chapter 4: Fall.
Part 5
Prev || Next
Soon after walking around the festival while eating lunch with Kagiura, it was time for Hirano’s shift, so at the moment he is dressed as Oiwa-san.
He’s stationed in the area around the exit. In the middle of a passageway where it seems like there’s nothing scary, a fake pillar has been constructed to create a place for him to hide.
It’s an obvious place from the standpoint of the guests walking around, but that’s the point. If the places where they jump out and scare them are too unexpected, they might fall over or something. And this way, the guests will be able to see the SFX makeup.
That’s their plan of attack for this haunted house, and indeed, Hirano looks so terrifying as a ghost that popping up in unexpected places would be too dangerous.
He gives the guests two minutes of downtime upon entering the haunted house, but every time he slowly pushes his wig out of the way to show his face after the initial jumpscare, he gets a delightful scream from the two-stage trick.
Suddenly, he hears the pattering of footsteps.
Assuming they’re running, Hirano refrains from stepping out in front of them. He gets the feeling that the terrified guest is trying to escape the haunted house without letting themselves cry out.
Sure enough, someone is speed-walking a little behind the person they’re chasing.
“Hey, come on, Niibashi! I told you not to run!”
Wait, I know this voice.
It sounds familiar, and he realizes it’s Kagiura.
When he unthinkingly gives him a glimpse of his face, Kagiura looks his way and freezes on the spot.
“What’s with you? Come on, keep it moving.”
And after I told him not to come!
Hirano’s kind of uncomfortable being seen with long hair, and he reaches up his hand to take off the wig. It’s a little early to take a break, but naturally he doesn’t want his close companion to see him in drag.
“I think you even look good like this, Hirano-sa…”
To his disbelief, Kagiura had laid his hand on Hirano’s head. And now, when he tries to push the wig away from his face, he sees the made-up part that’d been hidden and lets out a loud yelp.
Seeing Kagiura play Hirano’s own trick himself is hilarious, and Hirano howls with laughter. He can’t help it, seeing someone play themself like that.
This time Hirano’s the one to close the distance between them.
Why don’t I give him a good, long look?
Kagiura had also started laughing, so Hirano had assumed he’d already gotten used to his appearance, but he screams again and suddenly leaps forward.
Hirano’s feet, clad in geta under his yukata, are particularly susceptible to surprise attacks. He can’t support Kagiura’s weight as he falls, so they go down together.
With a thud, they land in a heap right in the middle of the haunted house’s passageway.
The next guests, who’d caught up to them before they knew it, cry out at the sight of their entwined bodies laying atop one another.
“Huh…WAAAH-?!”
Startled, Hirano and Kagiura clamber to their feet, just as flustered.
Of the two girls who’d arrived, one had been walking a bit ahead of the other, and she’d been the one to let out a scream. For some reason, she grabs the other girl’s hand and drags her back around the corner they’d just come from, her voice coming out a little strange as she speaks.
“S-s-s-sorry! We didn’t see anything!”
“What’s wrong?” Apparently the other girl has not grasped the situation, and raises her voice in concern.
“N-n-n-nothing!”
Hirano thought her voice sounded a bit off, but figures, well, she’s probably just scared, since she just saw a ghost pull another guest down on top of him.
He sets his wig back in place while straightening the disarrayed hem of his yukata.
“Sorry, Kagi-kun. I screwed around too much. Go find your friend.”
“Fiiine.”
“Sorry, that was probably weird to walk in on,” he apologizes to the two girls they’d kept waiting.
“Not at all! We got to see something amazing!” The one girl replies, though Hirano doesn’t quite get her drift. She probably just means because Kagiura’s hot.
Tumblr media
“Ah, after all that, we ended up ruining the haunted house vibe, sorry.”
Hirano rummages around in Sasaki’s bag, which was kept to the side, and foists some candy onto the girls.
“I’ll give you this to make up for it, so don’t hold it against us.”
He covers the half of his face with the makeup, which had gotten messed up by the disheveled wig, so he doesn’t scare them. Unfortunately, handing them something in this manner probably just makes it even more like a horror movie. It’d be bad to scare them while apologizing, though.
“Eek! Okay!” Just like earlier, the girl’s voice sounds just a bit off as she replies.
When it’s time for the shift change, Sasaki, portraying Hanako, returns. It doesn’t take him long to notice his bag’s been opened, and he astutely notices the difference from how he left it.
“I kinda feel like some of my candy’s gone.”
“Oh, I gave it to some customers.”
“Why, what for?”
Sasaki adds, “I get them all the time, so it’s fine if it’s just a little,” but he still seems suspicious, and Hirano wonders just how much he should explain.
Well, it’s not that big a deal, he concludes, and gives him the short version.
“It’s hush money.”
He doesn’t particularly want to tell him about his and Kagiura’s horizontal exploration.
“Sounds kinda sus.”
“Huh? No, it's wholesome. Oh yeah, give me one more piece. I’ll pay you back.”
“Uh, as long as it’s not one of the milk ones, I don’t really care. You can just have it.”
“Nah, I’ll pay for this one, since it’s for personal use.”
A strange expression crosses Sasaki’s face at Hirano’s request. The look in his eyes is enough to voice his doubt.
“Hm? ….I kinda feel like you’ve changed.”
His own countenance has changed quite a bit. His smile has stretched into a leer.
Sasaki’s just about the last person Hirano wants to be told that by.
“Huh? Where the hell did that come from?”
“Haven’t you become really considerate?”
Hirano has a hunch that if he doesn’t change the subject, he’s going to end up getting teased.
“No idea.”
Turning his face away as if to push the thought aside, he rummages around in his wallet.
“Here, compensation.”  He hands over some pocket change in exchange for the candy. There are plenty of other pieces in Sasaki’s bag.
If what he says is correct, and he really has become more considerate, that would be Kagiura’s influence.
Even if he’s seriously worried about him, he won’t make a difference just by unilaterally butting in—he’d learned this while living with him. He’s learned about joy and feelings of gratitude, as well.
Lately, he’s been thinking that his parents naturally understanding each other is probably the result of communicating their thoughts to each other before he’d been born, and sharing the feeling of treasuring their partner.
That’s why, he should communicate even with his platonic friends.
“Oh yeah, about what happened before summer vacation.”
Although Hirano is a bit self-conscious, it’s now or never, so he decides to broach the topic.
“Hm?”
“The incident behind the school building. Your injuries all better yet?”
Hirano had been so fired up to find the culprits and resolve the incident before summer break, that what he should’ve said to Sasaki has been a loose thread.
“You’re talking about way back then? They’re long since healed.”
“I see…thanks for helping my kouhai.”
He’d meant to say it nonchalantly, but Sasaki’s voice rises in undisguised shock.
“You saying something like that…wild.”
“Shut up.”

I had a sudden thought.
have you ever thought about Hirano's utterly delighted expression at Kagiura gifting him earrings?
the same earrings that Hanzawa suggested he remove from his ears before Kagi moved in? the same earrings that are kind of looked down upon by others as it lends more to a badboy image?
yet here is Kagiura, totally accepting of Hirano from head to toe, gifting him earrings because he knows he loves wearing them and it would be a shame for the holes to close up and at the same time, they also really suit Hirano
it'd be the same if kagi gifted hirano the same style of clothes he loves or hair dye - things that everyone tends to be intimidated by when they look at hirano, things that aren’t usually encouraged by others
BUT KAGIURA JUST GETS HIM. HE ENCOURAGES THE THINGS THAT HIRANO LOVES.
ANYONE ELSE AND THEY WOULD'VE LET THOSE EAR HOLES GROW BACK IN, BUT NOT KAGIURA. NEVER HIM
Hirano’s overjoyed expression is both a product of receiving an expression of love and of acceptance from Kagiura.
We’ve said before, “was Kagiura the first one to compliment/show acceptance of Hirano’s hair?” yes probably! but the OG acceptance award goes to the earrings scene.

Sasaki and Hirano, Compare/Contrast Brainrot
Okay like I saw a post about Sasaki and Hirano’s friendship and I just. Started thinking about it and now I can’t stop. Especially after reading Hirano to Kagiura.
I feel like they’re messed up (repressed is probably what I actually mean) in the same way but in opposite directions and that’s why they like…get along, but in the strangest manifestation of that phrasing? They care about each other almost from a periphery, from the vantage point of someone who understands, but, since they’re also still figuring it out, they don’t know quite how to interact with or guide the other?
And it’s killing me because--idk if it was just me--I kept going feral over every single time I was reading the manga and Hirano would go “oh yeah I do [insert fuckign batshit intimacy] with my roommate, this is a normal senpai/kouhai thing to do” and Sasaki literally always reacts with:
“.” (Huh. I don’t think that’s normal but who am I to judge these things. Let’s ask the local social barometer.)
“Hey Hanzawa, this [reiterates what Hirano said word-for-word] isn’t normal is it?” (Translation: “this would be inappropriate to do with Mya-chan even though I’m clawing at the walls just thinking about it”)
And Hanzawa, bless his heart, who is only a fraction more normal about social interaction than everyone else is just like:
“.” [W H A T]
“Sasaki, what. Of course you shouldn’t be doing that. W H Y ARE YOU ASKING ME THIS”
AND THIS HAPPENS MANY TIMES IN THE SPAN OF TWENTY CHAPTERS. I CANNOT EXPRESS ENOUGH THE HILARITY BUT ALSO CONCERN IT INSPIRES TO WATCH.
More detailed analysis under the cut, I just can’t stop laughing at the way the manga compares them:
Sasaki fascinates me because, as I take stock again, it feels like he’s got this dread when it comes to change (e.g. Ogasawara and his gf dating--thus changing his relationship with both of them, asking Miyano out--risking losing him, confessing that he’s dating a boy to his sister--risking her enduring and fervent disapproval). So much of his younger teenage angst was related to being reluctant to start or do things, and while it’s easy to assume laziness, I don’t think that’s the case? He says in the manga: “There’s nothing I can do, so how am I supposed to know what I want to do then…?” I get a sense that this trapped feeling contributes to his dissatisfaction and stasis more than a refusal to do anything at all. I don’t think he lacks capacity; he’s proven to be exceptionally clever and even studious when he feels motivated.
Considering the lack of interest his parents had in his life (let alone his hobbies/skills) and his sister’s overbearing scrutiny, I feel like it makes sense he’s struggled so much with his self-actualization. I feel like he perceives it as being caught between hot and cold extremes constantly; like no matter what he does, he’ll either receive indifference or loud chastising. So why bother at all? It would explain why he likes Miyano’s temperament so much, considering the latter quite literally is defined by his normalcy and even keel. When Sasaki wants to move forward in their relationship, Miyano seriously considers both their feelings, and thoroughly weighs the realities of what it would mean to be together before replying. While Sasaki wants to be closer to him, I think so much of his willingness to wait was the fact that Miyano wasn’t evading him. Miyano was being honest and thorough about meeting him halfway, without insulting his feelings or flat out ignoring him.
(Side note: I fully agree that Sasaki’s sister is a positive influence in his life, in that she actually gave a damn when he was downspiraling and miserable, and pointed out that all kids need limits and guidance. But she is loud and forceful about her acknowledgement, and I feel like this is very grating to Sasaki. For better or worse, it’s clear he has a hard time with such a direct and intense approach about what he should think and feel, and about what he needs. Sasaki shows indications of a kind of mindset where he thinks he needs to shoulder all the tough and heavy things alone, so it makes sense to me that he would be uncomfortable with his sister proclaiming how he is lost or bereft of attention/discipline.)
I think there’s also the fact that Miyano witnessed Sasaki at his most vulnerable--and instead of lashing out--offered him help and sympathy, real warmth and patience. Sasaki has always meant a lot to me as a character, maybe because he resonates in such a poignant way. He’s somebody who has lived under such emotional extremes, and as a result deeply values a sense of normalcy. Where one could argue Miyano is unassuming and ordinary, I think that’s part of why Sasaki likes being with him.  With Miyano, he doesn't have to guess at the distance between them; Miyano is earnest and careful about those differences, and is very direct about addressing them with reciprocity.
Now then, Hirano. I know very little about Hirano’s home life other than his being an only child. But to be honest, that does tell us a bit--paired with his subtle social anxieties. I will never forget Sasaki saying to Miyano ‘that’s because Hirano plays favorites with his kouhais’ about the gap between his behavior towards his younger classmates versus everyone else. While Sasaki’s petulance is uproarious, there is something to that. (I also love how this exposes Sasaki, lowkey, because he’s basically saying that he’d only do that with his favorite people, aka Miyano. But otherwise he could never be bothered to care about a rando, and that’s hilarious.)
I think Hirano--because he doesn’t really have a sense of how he’s supposed to relate to other people--tends to follow the same strict guidelines you might see in a rule book (DISCIPLINE COMMITTEE COUGH COUGH). Supposing he was taught--or simply feels responsibility towards younger kids as a result of reflective parental neglect--it would explain why he feels this rigid need to treat kouhais like little siblings. At first glance, and honestly when you consider his general aloofness, it doesn’t make much sense that he has a mothering sensibility otherwise.
Now then, because I realized this while writing and I have to inflict this on everyone else in rapid succession, this would explain his initial staunch discomfort with Kagiura’s affection. In the context of Hirano’s lifestyle/mindset:
Hirano → relationships with people? Don’t understand that, refer to following flowchart:
→ younger = responsibility, must protecc
→ same age = keep them in line
→ older = respect (but only if I feel like it HAIR DYE NOISES INTENSIFY)
Mind you, I don’t think this is limited to his platonic/friendship relations. I think this permeates into so many other aspects of his life, since sociality is inevitably a focal point for all human life. If he feels an uncharacteristic leniency and profound affection for Kagiura, then it must be because he's a kouhai he wants to protect, nothing more. He has no other reason or definition by which to ascribe to those feelings. Hirano doubly insisting he can’t be attracted to men is because he’s been so inundated in the widespread social signals, the social rule that has been long standing--and remains a pretty powerful message even now--that it’s unlikely (and that’s a gentle term) he’s attracted to another man.
After all, He is So Good At Being A Normal Young Man. He’s in the discipline committee. He gets excellent grades. He’s a kind and helpful senpai. He keeps his classmates in line. Of Course He Likes Women, What Do You Mean Gay.
He’s basically that meme like: “'Men can be attracted to other men' actually statistical error. Average men only feel attraction for women. Sasamiya is an outlier and should not be counted."
Both Hirano and Sasaki hate change/unpredictability, but I really love how complex their differences are in regards to how they experience that and feel that. Sasaki hates change, but he’s not necessarily emotionally repressed? He’s able to express what he feels for Miyano because he feels it so strongly, and it comes naturally when he does. In fact, it’s so natural that he becomes impulsive--and that’s why he gets so anxious about moving too far or too fast by accident. He has the overthink override, where if the attraction is too strong he simply Can’t Shut Up About How Much He Loves Miyano or stop hugging/kissing him.
Hirano hates change in the sense that he’s so ensconced in this idea that This Is Normal Human Behavior, that he completely loses sight of how he actually feels about anything--because he rejects/suppresses anything he can’t coherently define in a scripted, linear way. And being asked to tread that unstable, unsteady ground is tantamount to throwing a cat in water with no warning. This is why it’s so sad but also HYSTERICALLY FUNNY to see him like “wym I have feelings for Kagiura. It's perfectly normal to start yelling with all the wounded rage of a scorned housewife over my kouhai not letting me wake him up for morning practice. That is what it means to be a senpai.” Because he has no blueprint for how he’s supposed to express a love that goes deeper than friendship (with a man no less), he defaults to these overly simplistic structures that can’t support the complexity/maturity of such adult human feeling and exchanges. They worked for him just fine before, so why won’t they work for him now?
Relegating Kagiura to the role of kouhai makes it easier for Hirano to conceptualize why he cares so much for him, but it also limits the scope of his view. He’s using it as an umbrella term in a sense: of course he doesn’t find every little thing about Kagiura infuriating/boring/troublesome. Being the older person means being responsible and chill about everything. But that’s the thing. He’s not indulging Kagiura the same way he indulges Miyano, despite him qualifying them the same way. With Miyano it’s super clear Hirano really does just see him as a baby duckling, someone to treat gently and usher around. His behavior around Kagiura is so astronomically different in comparison, it’s nearly comical to try to compare them:
It’s Kagiura’s birthday. Hirano, who probably hardly remembers people’s birthdays, deadass went around asking every person he was close to (like, 5 ppl) for advice. He agonized over it for days on end. He gets Kagiura tickets to a basketball game and an alarm clock, and spends the entire day with him. He asks Hanzawa if he can use party poppers to celebrate Kagiura on the day of, and to get around the rules when he’s told no he has everyone go hog wild with them at the Christmas party in a loophole maneuver to celebrate. Reminder to myself and everyone reading, this is BEFORE he even hears a word about Kagiura’s feelings.
THIS IS BEFORE EITHER OF THEM ARE IN ANY KIND OF INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP. HIRANO, WHO IS MR. “i only study or drag people to baby jail, what do you want,” SPENT ENTIRE DAYS PAINSTAKINGLY PLANNING ALL OF THIS. FOR KAGIURA’S BDAY. AFTER ONE OFFHAND COMMENT FROM KAGIURA OF LIKE mannnn having an xmas bday sucks ass, they just try to lump it tg with holiday presents booooo :///
That Hirano conceptualizes Kagiura as a kouhai has been established. But another angle that’s equally crucial is this equation:
Hirano → adore person? Devote Every Minute To Being Nice^TM
→ hate person? angry cat hissing sounds/smack with paper roll
→ mild dislike? Lowkey grousing/sarcasm/dismissal
→ neutral? (this is most people btw) refer to earlier chart for appropriate social etiquette
This is pretty much where Hirano gives himself away. Because even in his most inflexible rules for himself, we’ve never seen him convey so much feeling for anyone around him so helplessly. It can be argued that he might have in the past, but honestly, I doubt it. The feeling is so confusing and new to him that it leads me to believe so much of his difficulty accepting what he feels is related to its unfamiliarity. He can’t trust it as real precisely because he can’t control or neatly define it. (This made doubly disconcerting by the fact that he doesn’t have a typical social structure to work from either. If his parents, for instance, are anything like Hanzawa’s, it’s possible his conception of love between a couple is about devotion to remain together to fulfill a sense of status/purpose to create a new life. He would have zero concept of love that comes from the very depths of a person’s emotional being, a call and response that is as instinctive as it is fulfilling.)
Sasaki feels an intense desire to be close to Miyano, and thus acts accordingly because he trusts his feelings. On the other hand, he has trouble measuring the distance between himself and others. (e.g. he thinks he will lose his friends if they date, his sister acts like a parent but is also a kid and that makes it hard for him to know how to interact, he struggles to convey himself properly to Miyano when he brings up escalating to dating). Hirano, on the other hand, doesn’t realize the intensity of his affection and heartfelt proximity to Kagiura because he’s so busy tying himself up in knots over what he’s supposed to feel and think that he doesn’t trust his feelings. Rather, he is only given away by how obscenely his actions expose him. Comparatively, he has less trouble measuring the distance between himself and others when it comes to anyone but Kagiura.
(Perhaps obviously, Kagiura has Sasaki’s whole ‘if I don’t hug/kiss/bark at him I’ll die’ emotional expression and Miyano has the cautious measuring of distance between people and difficulty accepting gay like Hirano.)
God they’re both so quintessentially queer it hurts me. One can’t shut up about his love, and the other literally cannot open his mouth and express his feelings or he’ll die.
NARRATIVE FOILS EVERYONE
(Also unsure if it’s me but wow. They are so. Autism. And that also kills me akhfjldghjgdsfhkdfjhg)

Finished reading the latest chapter translation of *Hirano to Kagiura* and I'm just so-
Tumblr media
It took me 30 minutes to just read the whole thing with how much I was fangirling, it's honestly hilarious how I can become so un-serious once a particular BL I've been reading comes out with a new chapter for me to fawn over. 😅
We've got some new developments in ways of more sprinklings of information about Kagi-kun and Hirano's progressing relationship. The Brick™ realized that Kagiura was into him way back then, and Kagi's smile is just so teasing yet soft towards him, this scene alone melted my heart with how they interacted.
Tumblr media
The next day, Kagi's button comes undone and when Hirano passes by, he's then handed a sewing kit by Niibashi (Kagi's best friend) and then ensues some more revelations for readers. There's a lot of flipping cute scenes in this damn chapter (I have too many of them backed up on my phone alone lol), but the main focal point of this release was most likely an introspection into Hirano and Kagi's differing love languages. Kagi emphasizes more on physical touch to get his affections across to the person he loves, which is shown with a majority of his initiatives of the 10-second rule he places on himself to touch Hirano (with the blonde's consent, of course).
Tumblr media
Hirano, on the other hand, prefers to spend quality time with the people he cares about. That's clearly shown throughout the majority of the manga, but it's given emphasis in this particular chapter as Hirano makes the observation that while Kagi might have his heart racing whenever he's near or touching the blonde, Hirano doesn't have that same experience.
Rather, it's in the way his actions allow him to optimize the time he has with his kouhai, such as tutoring him during exam season and trying out basketball and letting Kagi help him to get better in the sport. It's in his nature to always make way for Kagi and that's probably been cultivated to the point that he's unconsciously giving so much time to be with Kagi, though he has yet to fully realize the implications of having those actions interpreted within a romantic sense.
He's also given more of a push towards his ambiguous relationship with Kagi when Miyano makes an off-hand comment about how a BL character kept thinking about how he wanted to see the person he loved, and Hirano's thoughts always seem to end up with him thinking of Kagiura. He ***realizes*** this, and instantly gets pissed. 😂
Tumblr media
Feelings are hard to decipher, so I relate to Hirano on this point. At least The Brick™ has come to numerous revelations that will point towards the direction of his feelings. It's buried deep in there, but he truly does love Kagiura so much, he's just so deep into it that he hasn't yet deciphered it as such. It's so obvious in the way he takes care for Kagi and how much he gives his time, how willing he is to give into Kagi's whims, and how he brightens so much to the point of being blinding. Progress has been made, and he just needs a lot more time before he finally realizes it.

Hirano to Kagiura light novel translation Epilogue
Epilogue: Good things
Prev ||
I know, I know, I'm a day late. But we're finally here! We've reached the end of this way-longer-than-expected journey 🙌 thank you all so much for sticking with me this long, even as the official TL was released. It's been a blast 💖 I'll be drawing the name for the giveaway after this, so stay tuned!
Cleanup for the cultural festival goes by much quicker than the preparations had.
Breaking down everything they’d worked so hard to make was disappointing, but even the wistfulness of the demolition process was a part of the joy.
That, Kagiura thought, was probably what he’d say if he were a bit more sophisticated.
Since becoming a part of the executive committee, being that frenzied during the preparation period was unavoidable. For as much as he’d relied on Niibashi for the paperwork, he planned to work just as hard leading the cleanup efforts.
Thanks to that, his lower back is quite sore.
As a result, his arrival at the dorms is no later than usual.
He’s not sure when, but at some point the kinmokusei hedge had started blooming.
“Hey, welcome home.”
“I’m home. You’re back early, Hirano-san.”
The haunted house had been a large-scale production, so he would’ve thought cleanup would take a long time, but Hirano’s presence in the dorm suggests he slipped out early.
“Did you have something you needed to do?”
“Yeah.”
When he hands him something without saying another word, Kagiura blinks in surprise.
“Hm? Candy?”
“You didn’t get to be scared properly at the haunted house.”
Was that even a problem?
Kagiura had been troubled by not only knocking Hirano down, but by being seen like that by students from other schools. Whether he’d been scared or not wasn’t the issue.
But apparently Hirano had been worried about it.
“It was scary enough, though, that special effects makeup,” Kagiura remarks nonchalantly.
“That’s what got you scared, though. You totally missed out on the best parts of the haunted house. Well, you can have this as an apology. Your throat’s been giving you a hard time lately, right?”
“.....”
He’s always like this, he thinks.
He always meets me where I am with so much kindness.
“Wait, do you not like candy? No, you were eating some brown sugar candy the other day.”
“.....I like it.”
Slowly, Kagiura’s heart grows hot. He shouldn’t be feeling this warm over this, yet here he is.
The act of being considered by Hirano makes him happier than anything. Though, he does also like candy.
“Oh, good.”
“I like it!”
The meaning of this phrase, the true meaning, is too much to convey no matter how many times he says it.
“I got it the first time.”
Hirano’s side profile as he laughs, flustered, is stunning.
And words completely fail him.
They head to the dining hall a little earlier than usual. While Kagiura is eating his dinner, the chair next to Hirano’s is pulled back.
There aren’t that many people he’s gotten close with while living in the dorms. Their visitor is none other than dorm leader Hanzawa.
Usually, Kagiura’s part of the late crowd thanks to club practice, so it’s rare for them to cross paths.
“Where’s your roomie?”
Kagiura startles at Hiranos nondescript statement.
I wonder if I get called the same way.
It sounds intimate, relaxed.
“He was so busy with the cultural festival that he’s crashed out. I couldn’t wake him up, so I just left him there.”
Traces of exhaustion also tinge Hanzawa’s voice, so it feels like Kagiura’s eavesdropping on a private conversation, and he almost wants to excuse himself.
Having finished his salad, he silently confronts his Chinese stir-fry. But before long, his chopsticks stop in mid-air.
There’s tons of peppers.
Hanzawa, always keen to subtleties, quickly takes notice.
“You’re not going to eat them?” He asks.
Simultaneously, Hirano says only “one piece.” How kind.
“...Okay, fine.”
He can manage just one piece, so he restrains his protesting stomach and somehow swallows down a pepper. Hirano’s eyes crinkle at the sight of his efforts.
“Good job.”
“I did my best. But, I can’t eat anymore…”
“What am I going to do with you?”
Hanzawa’s eyes widen at the intimate exchange. Have they forgotten he’s sitting right there?
The usually well-mannered Hirano reaches his chopsticks over the table to Kagiura’s plate, a gentle smile on his face.
After Hirano finishes eating the remaining peppers, and Kagiura expresses his gratitude with a “thank you, Hirano-san!”, Hanzawa finally pipes up.
“Nothing’s going on between you two, right?”
The tone of voice in which he asks Hirano this question is indescribably awkward.
“What’re you talking about? We’re just bros being bros. Right, Kagi-kun?”
“Bros…that’s one way to put it…”
With Hirano smiling at him so breezily, he can’t quite bring himself to nod along. His reaction ends up a little half-hearted.
“Am I wrong?” Hirano’s expression shows not a hint of foreboding, but Kagiura’s reaction raises some eyebrows. Hanzawa, who’d observed them both, whispers “Maybe so,” under his breath—but then he shakes his head as if to correct himself.
On the other hand, Kagiura says, “No, you’re not,” with a bashful smile.
He’d been called a friend, by Hirano. By the friend closest to his heart.
Joy gradually blossoms through him; when he speaks his words are from the very bottom of his heart. He’s probably grinning ear-to-ear.
“I’m really glad I met you, Hirano-san.”

Do you have any shoujo manga recommendations? I recently read Sasaki and Miyato and realised that I have been severly missing out!
Sure!! Thanks for asking me!
First, in case you haven't read it yet, Sasaki and Miyano has a spinoff that starts six months before the plot of Sasaki and Miyano called Hirano and Kagiura also by Shou Harusono.
Tumblr media
This one focuses on Sasaki's friend, Hirano and his new dormmate, Kagiura. I know Sasaki had extra stories with them but the spinoff gave them an actual story. It currently has about 23 chapters and a light novel with the light novel being the first thing that happens chronologically. No anime for it as far as I know. The back of the first volume has a timeline of where events fit (this came out when Sasaki was up to Volume 5)
Tumblr media
Speaking of novels, Sasaki and Miyano has two novels, one focusing on the characters' first year and one on their second year. I haven't read them yet so I'm not sure what exactly happens in them but if you can, check them out!
OK, now for other recs!
Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku by Fujita
Tumblr media
This one is really cute! An office worker and otaku named Narumi Momose got dumped by her boyfriend when she got outed as one. Feeling awkward about running into him at work after the bad breakup, she quit her job and got a new one at a different company. This time, she's determined to keep her secret under wraps as to avoid another incident. However, this may prove to be hard when she finds out her childhood friend and fellow otaku Hirotaka Nifuji works at the company and almost outs her on her first day. She meets up with him after work to catch up and when Narumi tells him about her recent breakup, he asks her why not date an otaku. Specifically him. She rejects it at first but when he says he can help her in life, video games and with her booth at Comiket, she agrees.
There are three couples this series focuses on. The second couple knew each other since high school and have been dating for about a decade and work at the company with Narumi and Hirotaka. The third couple is the younger brother of Hirotaka and a gamer who goes to his college. It's a lighthearted comedy about office worker otakus and navigating their relationships. A lot of references to anime, video games, BL, GL, you name it. Like Sasaki, this was a webcomic posted on pixiv so the pacing and layout feel similar, at least to me. There are 11 volumes (6 volumes if you go by the English translation bc they combined two volumes into one for 5 of them and then the last one is by itself). I mainly got into this one bc Hirotaka was aesthetically my type. I remember seeing the first volume cover at kinokuniya when only the Japanese version was out and being like "I need to find out what this series is bc I need to meet him"
Kimi Ni Todoke by Karuho Shiina
Tumblr media
This was a series I read when I was in high school. High school freshman Sawako Kuronuma has been feared and misunderstood by her peers all her life due to her appearance. It was so bad that her classmates call her Sadako since she looks like the character from The Ring. She had resigned to her fate of never making a friend until popular boy Kazehaya starts talking to her. The more time he spends talking to her, the more her world opens up and she starts making friends and experience things she hadn't been able to before this point. As they spend more time together, love blossoms between the two characters.
There are 30 volumes and 38 episodes. I read up to volume 18 and then stopped because that was the most recent volume at the time and I kinda forgot about by the time more volumes came out. But that was my fault not the manga because this series is really really cute!! A term I've coined for myself when I read this was whenever Kazehaya and Sawako were being cute together, I'd exclaimed "THESE ADORABLE LITTLE FUCKS!!" because they are so adorable to each other. The friends Sawako makes are really cool and fun in their own right. If you want some really cute, tooth rotting sweetness, I recommend this series.
Princess Jellyfish by Akiko Higashimura
Tumblr media
Tsukimi Kurashita is a jellyfish fanatic that lives in Amamizukan, a woman only apartment building that houses other woman with their own fixations. They are considered NEETS and have a strict rule of no men allowed in their living space. Tsukimi's love for jellyfish came from going to a jellyfish aquarium with her mom before she died of an illness when Tsukimi was a kid. She goes to a pet shop regularly to visit a spotted jellyfish she's taken a fancy to that she named Kurara. When she sees that the employees put a moon jellyfish in the same tank, she fears for its life as the moon jellyfish will kill Kurara if not taken care of. However, her fear of talking to normal people lead to a misunderstanding with the employee until a stylish person comes to her rescue and they take Kurara back to Amamizukan. The next morning, Tsukimi finds out the stylish person she brought back to her home is an illegitimate son of a politician and cross-dresser named Kuranosuke Koibuchi.
There are 84 chapters and 11 episodes of this series. I read up to about chapter 74 before stopping for the same reason I did for Kimi Ni Todoke. It's a really fun time. The characters are funny and sweet, the situations are entertaining, it's just a fun o' time. And the art is really pretty!!
Skip and Loafer by Misaki Takamatsu
Tumblr media
Mitsumi Iwakura moved from her small town on the outskirt of Ishikawa Prefecture to Tokyo to start high school. However, she gets lost going to school on the first day due to the culture shock and seems at a loss at what to do. That's when she meets Sosuke Shima who was late to school himself and travels with her to school. The series follows Mitsumi as she experiences school life in the city and meets lots of new people and makes friends with Sosuke along for the ride.
There's currently about 59 chapters and 12 episodes of this series. I started reading it when the anime was announced and I had a fun time reading it. I really enjoyed Mitsumi and seeing her learn and broaden her horizons as she goes to school and hang out with Sosuke and everyone else. It's a nice story!

High school student Uenoyama Ritsuka is a guitarist in a instrumental only band with college students Akihiko Kaji and Haruki Nakayama. When going to his usual hiding spot for lunch, he finds Mafuyu Sato sleeping with a guitar with broken strings in his arms. Uenoyama offers to fix it and when he does and plays a note, Sato begs him to teach him how to play. Uenoyama is reluctant but gives in when Sato persists. After spending some time together, Uenoyama finds out that Sato has a beautiful singing voice and invites him to join his band.
There are 9 volumes, 11 episodes and a movie, with another movie on the way. The series focuses on three relationships. The first is the relationship between Uenoyama and Sato, the second between Akihiko and Haruki and the third between Sato's childhood friends Hiiragi and Shizusumi. The art is really pretty and the characters are so good!! I really enjoyed the story a lot! My favorite character is Hiiragi and I can't wait for the next movie to come out because they're gonna cover his story then and I wanna hear him sing!! (Also his seiyuu is Fumiya Imai AKA seiyuu for Akito Shinonome so double reason why I wanna hear it) Also, Imma use this as an excuse to post a page I really wanna see animated bc I can hear it so clearly in my head.

Bloom Into You by Nakatani Nio

Yuu Koito, lover of shoujo manga, always dreamed of being confessed to and experience that heart pounding feeling she sees happen in her books. However, when she's confessed to by a guy in middle school, she feels nothing and rejects him. Now starting high school, she's left confused on what her lack of feeling means. When she sees the student council president Touko Nanami turn down a boy, she asks her for help with her situation. But when Nanami confesses her love to Koito, will she feel that spark she's being hoping for? There's 8 volumes, 13 episodes and 3 light novels starring a side character. I'm up to volume 6 of this one and I'm really enjoying it!! The story is engaging, the charatcers are interesting. I like that Yuu isn't a pushover, she's a bit snarky and doesn't let Touko push her around. And I like how Touko comes off as a competent student council president but she has a more vulnerable side that she only shows Yuu. They pair nicely with each other.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun by Izumi Tsubaki
Tumblr media
OK I know you know this one already but this wouldn't be a rec list made by me if I didn't include it. This is my favorite series ever. It's mecore. Me-coded. Me. Second year high schooler Chiyo Sakura finally gets the courage to confess her love to Umetarou Nozaki, a guy in her grade. However, she messes up the confession and says she's his biggest fan instead of "I like you". Nozaki, in response, gives her his autograph and then invites her to his house. She accepts but once they get there, he has her do inking on a manga he makes. Turns out, Nozaki is a manga artist under the pen name Sakiko Yumeno and he's had his eye on Sakura for a while because he wanted to bring her onto his team as an inker. She agrees to join so she can get closer to him.
There's currently 14 volumes, 12 episodes and an OVA split into six 5-mintue parts. This series has me dying of laughter with every chapter. The characters are fun, the story is fun, it's just a fun time! There are three main couples with some side couples and duos that get their own time in the spotlight as well. The main ones are Sakura and Nozaki, Sakura's friend Yuzuki Seo and Nozaki's screentone assistant and first year Hirotaka Wakamatsu, and Nozaki's background artist and third year theater club president Masayuki Hori and "Prince of the Drama Club" Yuu Kashima. Other characters like Mikoto "Mikorin" Mikoshiba, Mayu Nozaki, Yukari Miyako, Ken Miyamae, and Mitsuya Maeno all bring their own brand of fun to the table. This series made me laugh so much I couldn't read it in class to slack off because I'd laugh out loud and disrupt class. I've yet to read another series that made me do that. I cannot recommend this series enough. Please read AND watch it if you have not already. Nozaki is starting to gain awarness. I lose my mind whenever I see it happen. I wanna see it happen. It's been 13 years!
Imma put an honorable mention here because I haven't read or watch it yet but I've heard Horimiya written by HERO and illustrated by Daisuke Hagiwara is really good. I wanted to but just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Tumblr media
That's all I have for right now! If you've already read/watched all of these already, lmk and I'll list some more!! Hope you enjoy! ^_^
