Beast Wars: More than Meets the Eye AU part 1.5

Cheetor (Rodimus): once one of the youngest member of the Maximals, he slowly managed to rise the ranks thanks to his skills and became the second in command. When Optimus Primal sacrificed himself to save Cybertron and reformatted it into a technorganic paradise. He wanted to become the new Prime, but the Matrix rejected him and chose his former friend Lio Convoy, turning him into Lio Prime. At the same time however, the Matrix showed him the path for the legendary Knights of Cybertron, thus convincing him to search for them in order to “bring a new golden age on Cybertron” (and not to convince them to let him became the new Prime in place of Lio). He then started to recruit a crew to help him in this mission, but only a bunch of misfits, weirdos and other similar people decide to take part. He’s similar to Rodimus, personality-wise, but a little bit more responsible towards his crew. He has a Transmetal body that granted him a flight mode.

Big Convoy (Ultra Magnus+Fortress Maximus): originally a friendly Maximal, millennials of war, the loss of his friends and PTSD broke him down into an aggressive loner who still one of the best, if not THE best, Supreme Commander ever existed. He is very serious and even more rule obsessed than Ultra Magnus, to the point that he once put half of the crew into jail for having started a party without his permission. He also believes that Violence is the best answer to certain situations, and since his body is filled with weapons you can imagine what happens in those situations…

Waspinator (Rung): if you search “unlucky” on a Cybertronian dictionary you find his face, and you find out that his name is a synonym for it. Nobody knows where he came from, even him, and why he ends up dragged into dangerous situations that always ends with him injured. During the Maximal-Predacon war he drifted from the latter, where he was treated poorly, to the former, where he was treated a little better. He also had a lot of misadventures, from getting possessed by the spirit of Starscream and gaining a jet mode to being stomped by an awakened titan. One day he got fed up of the war and decided to become a NAIL, living for a while on a neutral colony and becoming a psychologist. He ended up on the Lost Light as an accident: he believed that they were going on a space cruise to celebrate the end of the war. On the good side, he now has lots and lots of patients, some of which didn’t tried to kill him during the war.

Rampage (Cyclonus): former member of Galvatron crew (Beast Wars 2 Galvatron, not G1), he was contaminated by the anglomois, becoming an unkillable beast of destruction under the control of Unicron. After helping Optimus Primal defending Cybertron, the Oracle healed him, or at least the body. He spent some time traveling all around The planet in search of his former crew members with the objective of killing them as a punishment for what they did and then kill himself. He stumbled upon Inferno while searching for Hellwarp and battled each other until Transmutate used her power to escape the capsule where she was trapped. When he recovered he found himself on the Lost Light, much to his annoyance. He hates being forced on a mission he believes to be pointless and being surrounded by a bunch of people that either hate or fear him. The only bot that treat him well is his “adopted daughter” Transmutate that he choose to protect after he saw how the other crew members treated her. He has a crab and a tank alternate mode, plus many cannons and other similar weapons of mass destruction. He also used to be unkillable, but now he is mortal again, but nobody is that crazy to try to kill him.

Via the official BotCon Discord channel we have more never before seen toy concepts from the days of the Transformers Figure Subscription Service, this time based on Galvatron!

It’s Decepticon Day! March 4th… March Forth… No takers?     Anyway, I wanted to show off an unused… or rather later altered… concept for an infamous Decepticon Leader that had at one point been considered for an exclusive. What’s his name again? Pretender Galvatron!     When we made Oilmaster for BotCon 2015, we knew that we wanted to redeco/retool him for Optimus Prime. And that we wanted to use the Masterforce Grand shell for his adversary. However, Megatron wasn’t my first pitch, it was Galvatron with the inner figure based on his cartoon colors and the shell in his toy deco. The inner figure was a recolor of the HFTD Breacher figure… I liked the idea so much that I made a hand-painted version so I could show exactly how I wanted the deco to work (which stems from the final production of SG Galvatron not getting the abs that I wanted). It also allowed me to show how the Construct-Bots cannon would work… and make sure a  label saying “translucent” was attached to avoid miscommunication there as well.     Ultimately though, the decision was to make the adversary a Double Pretender to match Optimus Prime. And, of course, that an Optimus should be fighting a Megatron. So the TFSS Pretender Megatron with Spacewarp was made instead. A toy which I like just as well; it’s a pity we couldn’t make both!     I’ve read claims that these concepts are something new and created on the spot. In response to that I left all the scuff marks and storage damage visible on Galvatron and didn’t try to hide them from the camera as I did with Optimus Primal.

Also to provide a response to the murmurs about why we didn’t use any of these great ideas if we had them… I have folders with hundred of ideas, and I’m just showing off the ones I’m proud of. But I’ll go ahead and show one of which I’m not proud, if that helps. Go ahead and enjoy the terrible sight of… Galvashark! (Made before eHobby and Takara Toy Mall revealed Hellwarp… who coincidentally uses the same colors. But for a different character of course.)

One last thing… Jim Sorenson recently told me that he used the mock-up for Pretender Galvatron as a basis for his Beast Wars Uprising Pretender story. Where the Decepticons were human and the Autobots were the monster suits. So that’s fun, and I love the nod that I somehow had managed to stay ignorant of for this long!
