Plot Summary:

Hellboy, Bruttenholm, and Susan travel to Florida to investigate what might be a case of spontaneous human combustion, only to find something far, far worse.

Reading Notes:

(Note: Pagination is in reference to the chapter itself and is not indicative of anything found in the issues or collections.)

pg. 1 - I’ve really been enjoying the almost cold open approach to these stories, jumping in on an aspect of the overall story more like an episode of The X-Files or something like it, showing people affected by the plot in the first couple of pages.

pg. 2 - Also, I love how shadowy the characters and setting are from Paolo Rivera, Joe Rivera, and Dave Stewart. It makes the spontaneous combustion even more creepy.

pg. 4 - Bongoland is a real place. So is the plantation that we’ll see later in this story. The approach of incorporating real weird locations and history into these stories adds a bit of authenticity, like with incorporation of existing myths and folklore into the narrative.

pg. 5 - The investigation of spontaneous human combustion also makes this feel a bit like an X-Files episode.

pg. 6 - I think it’s kind of interesting that it’s clothing here that’s igniting, rather than specifically the skin. It suggests that something external is lighting them on fire.

pg. 8 - That it’s not a clear haunting is something different.

pg. 9 - The mystery deepens a bit here as we get revelation that these kinds of deaths have been occurring for at least a hundred years. And I like that Hellboy is trying to work through various different creatures that could possibly cause the problem. It’s actually consistent with his suggestion that it could have been swamp gas.

pg. 10 - A horrible chapter in North American history. This definitely seems to be setting the story up for something about vengeance.

pg. 12 - Nice to see Susan using the trishul to focus her visions.

pg. 14 - Hellboy’s turn to be set ablaze. The interplay of fire and shadow is beautiful.

pg. 16 - It seems like everything they were talking about during the history of the area is just fuelling the fire.

pg. 18-19 - That it’s the land itself, and not haunting, is interesting. This is actually the kind of thing that some people consider to be a “true” haunting more than ghosts. An emotional or psychic scar on an area “recorded” into it like a record. This seems more intelligent and active than that, but it’s still a neat difference from the norm.

pg. 21 - This is gorgeous.

pg. 22 - Hellboy wearing gift shop clothes is hilarious.

Final Thoughts:

It’s quite nice to see Paolo Rivera doing another Hellboy and the BPRD story after handling the line art for 1953: Beyond the Fences. With inks from Joe Rivera, the Riveras’ artwork has nice clean lines and beautiful people that draws on that idyllic Rockwell-esque feeling that many people of a certain age in America tend to have when looking back on the ‘50s. That “cleanliness” and “wholesomeness” that people think of works perfectly as something to bounce off the actual horrible events of history to make it feel more jarring. To shock people into realizing that it’s not really all white picket fences and puppy dogs. That the country was built on some horrific events.

d. emerson eddy has never spontaneously combusted. He has been on fire before, though. He doesn’t recommend it.
