The next morning came without a call from his mom. Helen did call them eventually to tell them that all the kids had slept soundly through the night and she was now making them waffles. They let the kids spend some more time with Nana as the three of them had a lazy morning to themselves. They slowly got dressed and ready to go. They intended to stay at his mom's house for the rest of their stay and were packing up their things.
Alex was tying his shoes as he looked over at Jo, who was sitting on the chair fixing her hair into a ponytail. “You ready to go get the kids?”
However, Jo didn't respond as she put a hand on her stomach. She had been rubbing her stomach all morning and his smile fell as he saw that she looked a little pale.
“Jo, are you okay?” Alex asked as Jo looked at him.
Her eyes went wide before she slapped her hand across her mouth and ran for the bathroom. Alex quickly got up and quickly followed her as they rushed past Izzie who was in the mirror putting the last touches of her mascara on.
“Oh my god,” Izzie said as Jo dove for the toilet just before her breakfast came up again.
Alex kneeled next to her, grabbing her hair that had fallen out of the ponytail and twisting it back so it wouldn't get in the toilet as he rubbed her back. “Oh, Jo”
Alex rubbed her back, wishing he could give her more comfort. Jo continued to heave until there was nothing left in her stomach and only bile was coming up. Finally, it stopped and Jo leaned her head on her arm over the toilet. Alex grabbed some toilet paper and wiped her mouth as Jo frowned.
“I think that’s it,” Jo said as she looked over at him with weary eyes.
Alex reached up to feel her forehead. “You're a little warm.”
“Damn it, I thought you all were over this,” Izzie said as she offered Jo a cup of water from the sink.
Jo rinsed out her mouth and then turned around to him with a pout. He pulled her in and she buried her face in his neck. He held her as she crawled into his lap and he wrapped his arms around her.
“I’m sorry, honey,” Alex whispered to her as he held her.
“Do you just want to stay here today?” Izzie asked as Jo shook her head.
“I'll be okay, the nauseous comes and goes. I just don't know what's going on. I thought I was over this for sure, but I've just been so nauseous the last couple of days,” Jo sighed as she tucked her nose into his neck.
“The past couple of days?” Alex asked, raising an eyebrow at her as Jo only shrugged.
“I didn't think much of it and I wasn’t throwing up until now,” Jo said as she closed her eyes and rested against him,
Alex just shook his head and Izzie sighed. Jo was never one to admit when she was sick and often hid it from everyone. She would choose to work through it, leaving Alex to drag home for chicken noodle soup and rest. The only reason she rested this time around was because it had completely wiped her out and they were on vacation.
“I think we should just stay here,” Alex sighed as Jo looked up at him with big brown eyes and a pout. “At least for today.”
“No, I want to see the kids and spend time with your mom,” Jo lamented with a frown. “I’m okay really. It comes and goes, but it’s gone now.”
“Why don't I call your mom? I'm sure she wouldn't mind keeping the kids for a little longer,” Izzie said, pulling out her phone before Jo could begin to protest, although she still did. “In the meantime, I’ll go get some stuff from the pharmacy.”
“No, I'm fine really,” Jo said looking between the two of them although they knew she was lying through her teeth.
“Jo,” Alex said as Jo just nodded, losing her fight as she buried her head in his neck. “Do you want to go back to the bedroom?"
“I think it's best if I stay here for a little bit,” Jo said with a little shake of her head.
“Okay,” Alex said, kissing her head.
After Izzie left Jo they stayed in the bathroom for a little bit longer. When she finally got the strength to get up she did seem better, but still curled up on the bed with him. He took her temp, but it was only a little high and not enough to be considered a fever. They put on the TV and Jo flipped through a few channels before finding a morning show that she liked. Alex ran his fingers through her hair, hoping it would help call the nausea.
Finally, Izzie returned with a small smile on her face that Alex thought was rude given the situation. She handed a small paper bag to Jo, when she opened it, she looked confused as she pulled out a box and Alex saw that it was a pregnancy test.
“Izzie what is this, Jo's not pregnant, she's sick,” Alex said as they both sat up Jo just stared at the box in front of her.
“I don't know, you might just want to take it,” Izzie said with a sneaky smile and a shrug.
“Alex,” Jo said, looking up at him, her eyes wide as she put a hand over her mouth in shock. “My period is two weeks late!”
“What?!” Alex said his jaw dropped as well before a large smile formed across his face and the excitement filled him. “We're going to have a baby!”
“You don't we don't know that,” Jo said, pointing in at him, her nerves in her voice. “It's probably just a fluke and stress from being sick.”
“I don't know,” Izzie said with a sing-song voice.
Jo looked between the two of them as they wore matching excited grins. She could tell they were convinced she was without a doubt pregnant. But Izzie didn't know her medical history. Alex must have read her face as his smile fell and he looked down.
“Um, Izzie could you give us a moment,” Alex said, glancing over at Izzie before he looked back at Jo, with his eyebrows knitted together.
Izzie had felt the mood shift and looked between them. “Yeah.”
Jo put her hand over her face as Izzie left the conjoined room. When the door shut, she dissolved into tears as Alex wrapped his arms around her. He held her as the box of tests fell from her hands.
“We tried for so long and got nothing.”
“I know.”
He pulled her into his lap, wrapping arms around her in a hug, and held her. Jo quietly cried, hiding her tears in her hands. But Alex pushed away her hands and held her face as his thumb rubbed her cheek. He waited for the tears to dissipate before he smiled.
“What if this time it’s positive? You don't have to look. I’ll look for you but we should try, Jo,” Alex said, a hopeful smile across his face.
Jo closed her eyes. not speaking yet, but she nodded. He pulled the test out of the box and got it prepared for her, waiting until she was ready to pull out of his arms. Jo sighed as she read over the test as well. There was an anticipation of sadness, but he clung to the hope that maybe maybe it would be positive.
Now that Alex thought about it he was sure if he was right. He certainly noticed that her breasts were fuller and that her stomach was slightly rounded. Her skin had been glowing the past couple of days, her hair was soft and shiny, and there was just something about her that Alex couldn't quite put his finger on. When he thought about it before, he chalked it up to her getting over being ill, but now he realized it was the pregnancy glow. Alex thought for sure Jo was pregnant.
“There's only one way to find out,” Alex said, letting a small smile grace his lips.
Jo stared at the little pregnancy test in her hand. She was also nervous about this. She had taken so many tests and had so many negative results. Jo wasn’t sure if she was strong enough to take another one. Then Alex put his hands over hers.
“You can do this Jo,” Alex said, giving her a small sure smile as she nodded.
Jo quickly took the test and wrapped it in toilet paper before she washed her hands. She retreated into Alex’s arms as he held her. He took the test from her and rubbed her back as Jo hid her face in his neck. She could hide in his arms forever, it was the one place she felt safe.
“Jo,” Alex said after a minute and when she looked at him, he had that wicked excited grin across his face.
Jo looked over the test and sure enough, there were two bold pink lines. “I'm pregnant.”
She was in disbelief as she turned around in his arms. Alex squeezed her tighter in a hug before he pulled her in for a kiss. It was like an explosion of fireworks on her tongue as he kissed her. The excitement filled her like beer fizzing over in the mug. She was actually pregnant this time. It was all their dreams come true and the best early Christmas present she could have gotten.
“We're having a baby,” Alex said, whooping with laughter as Jo giggled.
Alex leaned in and kissed her again and Jo completely melted in his arms, reaching up and putting a hand on your cheek as if she could hold him even closer. They kiss for several minutes just enjoying each other's lips and the excitement between them at the new baby. Then Alex pulled back and reached down, putting his hand on Jo's waist.
Jo giggled and shook her head. “I'm not even showing yet.”
“I know but our baby’s in there,” Alex said, his smile so wide and happy on his face and Jo couldn't help but share his smile.
Jo leaned against Alex as they finally made their way out of the bathroom. They were greeted with Izzie's happy smile as she wrapped her arms around them.
“Congratulations,” Izzie said as they hugged her back.
“Thank you,” Jo said as she pulled back.
“The kids are going to be so excited,” Alex said, smiling down at her.
“Maybe we should wait on telling them though,” Jo said looking between them. “I want to keep it between us for a while.”
“That's fair and once we tell them, they'll tell everybody,” Izzie agreed with a nod.
“Jo you're not going to miscarry,” Alex said, rubbing his hand up and down her back.
“We don’t know that,” Jo said, her eyebrows knitting together as she looked back at him. “And we can tell everybody later when I’m past the first trimester.”
“We can’t know the future, but we can hold onto the fact that you are pregnant right now and we can all celebrate that,” Izzie said, wrapping her up in another hug.
“Thank you,” Jo said with a sigh as she relaxed and smiled.
Izzie gave her another squeeze before she pulled back and smiled at her. Jo returned her smile with ease before she went back and settled into Alex's arms. He automatically wrapped his arms around her and kissed her head.
“Are you ready to go to my mom's yet? Or do you want to hang out for a little bit?” Alex asked his eyes looking at her with a bit of concern.
“No I'm okay, and I want to see her and the kids,” Jo said, her eyes sparkling as she smiled. Alex couldn't help but smile back as his eyes sparkled too and a little bit of excitement passed between them.
“Alright then well we should probably get going,” Izzie said as they collected their bags and headed off to his mom's house.
………………………………………………………………
The second they walked in the door all of the kids ran to greet them. Jo picked up Luna and cuddled her close with a sigh of relief. She had missed her baby and the thought of having another made her smile.
“I missed you, Little Moon,” Jo whispered against her cheek, giving her a kiss.
“Mama, car,” Luna said, as she pointed to the table where they were playing with Alex's old hot wheels collection.
“You three must be well rested,” Helen said as she got up to greet them all with a hug. “Did you enjoy your night off?”
“Yeah, we did, thanks again Mom,” Alex said as he sat next to Eli and ruffled his hair, despite his protests.
They spent the whole day at his mom's house talking with her and hanging out. They even got a chance to enjoy the snow as they ventured out to play. Jo loved the snow and playing with the kids as it recaptured a bit of her lost childhood. She loved watching Alex fool around with them and Luna’s free play. While Alexis could ride her sled all day and Eli worked hard on his snow creatures, each one more intricate than the next. They played until the sun went down and they all came back in and got ready for dinner.
Alex had been keeping an extra eye on Jo, she noticed it more when they were outside. He never let her stray too far from him, would follow her around, and be a little overprotective. Even the kids noticed as Alexis begged him to let Jo go down the hill with her, saying he could go down with Izzie or Eli for once as she wanted Jo. Alex protested, but Jo went down with Alexis anyway, but just twice. Although she had been fine, if not a little tired around nap time. She curled up with Luna for a nap and fell asleep in the upstairs bedroom.
It wasn't till around dinner time when she was helping Izzie and Helen with dinner that the smell of the roasted carrots turned her stomach and sent her running for the bathroom. Alex was at the store getting a few last minute ingredients and Jo missed his comfort. She wished she could go and curl up in his arms like she always did after she got sick. Unfortunately, she had to go back to the kitchen. Jo sighed and went back to the room, the carrots had been moved to the dinner table and the kitchen now smelled of the roast Izzie had pulled out of the oven.
“Sorry, the smell got to me,” Jo said as she sat down on a stool next to the counter.
“Here my dear, this always helped me with my morning sickness,” Helen said with a knowing smile as she presented Jo with a cup of tea.
“Oh no, I think it's just the last bit of the cold that's hanging on,” Jo said with a shake of her head.
However, Helen just gave her a knowing smile and went over to her knitting bag, picking up the knitting needles, no doubt to make them a baby hat.
Jo looked over at Izzie with wide eyes, but Izzie just shook her head and laughed as she stirred the gravy. Jo looked back down at the tea as she took a sip. It did help her morning sickness and her nausea didn’t return for the rest of the night.
………………………………………………………………
Finally, they all sat down for Christmas Eve dinner. It was absolutely beautiful as Izzie and Helen had really outdone themselves.
“I think we should all be thankful for my mom and Izzie's cooking. Without them we'd be eating turkey sandwiches,” Alex said, raising his glass.
“Yes, thank you, Nana and Mommy,” Eli said with a big smile as Helen blushed and Izzie beamed under all the affection.
“Yes thank you so much,” Jo said, before looking over at Luna. “Luna, can you say thank you to Nana and Mama Izzie?”
“Please,” Luna said, reaching out for the dish of rolls in front of her, rather than listening to what Jo was saying as they all laughed.
“I'm grateful for such a wonderful family. I’m so proud of the kind and loyal you are, Eli. Alexis, I’m so proud of how hardworking and brave you are. Luna, I’m so honored to be a part of your life and get to love you. Jo and Alex, I couldn't ask for two better people to co-parent my kids with, and I’m so grateful that you’ve both come into our relationship with love and understanding. Helen, I’m thankful that you've let me be a part of your family as well.”
“Thank you for that Izzie,” Alex said, as Izzie smiled.
“Well, what are you guys thankful for?” Alex asked the twins.
“I'm thankful for Mommy and Daddy and Mama Jo, but especially Luna,” Eli said, looking over at all of them warmly.
“That's so sweet of you buddy,” Jo said with a smile. “What are you thankful for Alexis?”
“I'm thankful that I'm not sick anymore and I'm thankful for my stuffed animal… and my family of course,” Alexis added as a bit of an afterthought, but they all laughed.
“We're grateful you're not sick either,” Alex said with a nod. “I'm grateful for my lovely wife, my three kids, for my ex-wife being cordial with us, and I thankful that I have my mom,” Alex said looking over him her eyes sparkling and he knew she knew that he was thinking of the baby Jo just leaned over until did her head as he leaned in for a kiss.
“Ew,” Alexis said, sticking her tongue out and shaking her head as Jo giggled and Alex just laughed.
“You don't think it's you when I kiss you,” Jo said.
“Yeah but that's different,” Alexis said, rolling her eyes. “You don't kiss my lips.”
Jo smiled and grabbed his chin, pulling in for another kiss as Alexis complained even louder.
“Can we eat before I lose my appetite?” she said making a gagging noise
“Please, please,” Luna chimed in practically jumping out of her high chair.
“All right let's dig in, I know we’re all hungry,” Helen said, giving a roll to Luna who smiled.

Amber knew from a young age what the bottom looked like. Her father was an addict and at 3 years old, she witnessed her father smack her mother around. She tried to make things better, to get close to her dad but whenever she tried, he pushed her away from him. So as she grew up, she stopped trying. She stayed close to her mother and tried to help her as much as possible. When she was 3, Alex stole a car to make sure she got to the hospital after she had the flu and her fever began to spike higher and higher. That was the first foster home.
Over the span of 7 years, she was in and out of foster care with Aaron and Alex. It made her more and more anxious every time they got placed back with Helen. And then Alex left. They day he said goodbye, she acted tough, but all she wanted to do was beg him to take her with him. She was stuck with Aaron and Helen for years, being a caretaker for both. Most times, Aaron was lucid but every so often, there would be episodes. She was truant more often than not, helping her family. But she was smart. She caught things quickly, and while she may not be there, she always handed in her work. Aaron consistently said she was just like Alex; smart, strong and stubborn.
When she graduated, she took on taking care of them even more than she had. She worked part time at a diner, but after 9 months, she was fired  for missing some shifts. They relied off of the money Alex sent them, and she tried her best not to bother him and to keep her head down. And then Aaron broke. She was cooking dinner, chopping up peppers when Aaron, her big brother who had loved her her whole life, slammed her into the counter and tried to stab her. She fought him off, getting some minor cuts and one slice down her arm before she locked herself in her bathroom and called Alex after she called 911.
She went to the hospital with Aaron, got 39 stitches in her arm and then sat by his side the whole night. When Alex got there, she let herself go and sobbed in his arms for a solid half hour before they made the decision to commit Aaron. It was the worst decision she had ever had to make in her life. When she got home, her mom talked to her and essentially made her go to school, stating that she needed to do it for herself. So she did. She went to the University of Iowa, just like Alex and for med school, Boston University School of Medicine. She did her residency at MassGen and that’s where she met Max.
Max was in her intern class, had been an addicts kid just like her, and had the most beautiful eyes she’d ever seen. For the next 3 years, they worked side by side. She specialized in Pediatrics, he specialized in Cardio. They pushed each other but it worked. It worked so well that they married, and while she invited Alex, he didn’t show up. Neither did her mom. She was sad but she understood and she smiled through it anyway. Two years later, they had a beautiful baby boy named Cameron Alexander, after her favorite brother.
But then Max started the cycle again. And she was once again the 3 year old little girl watching her dad get high except now she had an actual three year old who was depending on her. He didn’t get a chance to hit her because the day he tried, she knocked him out with the frying pan in her hands. She moved out, and started to raise her son on her own. The court found her in favor for custody and she tried her best to keep the balance.
When her son turned 10, she decided she needed a change. So she picked up and moved to Seattle, where she knew her brother and her sister in law and their kids were. She needed family and when she called Seattle Grace, they were happy to accept another Karev.

(December 2003)
“Come on, I need someone to come with me. I can’t go back to Iowa by myself and you’re the only person who knows about my family. Besides, Lexie’s going back to Seattle for Christmas and I know you don’t want to hang out with Leah and Heather who are sticking around,” Alex tried reasoning with Jo. “Come to Iowa with me for Christmas.”
“You only want me to go because if I’m there, you’ll have someone to entertain your siblings while you go out and hook-up with some old fling from high school,” Jo rolled her eyes as she grabbed two beers out of the fridge and handed one to Alex.
“That’s not why I want you to come,” Alex frowned and shook his head. She really didn’t get it. She didn’t see it. She didn’t realize how much he cared about her and how close he was to slipping up and saying something stupid like I love you. Alex put a hand on her arm, grabbing her attention. “It’s just… no one should be alone for Christmas.”
Her eyes softened, “Alex I’ll be fine on my own. Really. You don’t have to worry about me. I’ve spent Christmas alone my whole life.”
“I know you’ll be fine on your own. I’m saying that you don’t have to be alone anymore. You’ve got people. You’ve got me,” Alex stated, his eyes genuine.
So, she went with him to Iowa. Because how could you say no to that? They decided to drive there. It was about a twenty hour drive without stops. They would trade off driving and stop at a motel to rest up for the remainder of the trip.
When they finally made it to Iowa, Helen Karev was so overjoyed to see her son that she almost overlooked the girl he’d brought home. When her eyes finally fell on Jo though, a bright smile stretched across her face.
“You must be Jo! Oh you’re so much prettier than Alex said,” Helen wrapped Jo into a hug, Jo meeting Alex’s eyes accusingly over her shoulder. “Come inside you two, Amber just made cookies, she’s been waiting for you all day.”
The pair made their way inside the house, Jo nudging Alex as they walked together, “So you talk about me huh? Or do you just mention every beautiful girl you pass on the street to your mom.”
Alex rolled his eyes, barely reacting fast enough to catch his sister as she barreled into him full speed.
“Alex! You’re home!”
“Hey Peanut, you’ve grown a whole foot,” Alex ruffled Amber's hair, a megawatt grin spanning his face as he wrapped his arm around his sister. “Amber, this is Jo. She's my annoying friend from Med School. Jo, my bratty little sister Amber.”
“Hey!”
“Come on!”
Both girls sent a glare in Alex’s direction, causing him to stifle a laugh as he looked between the two girls he loved. The love he felt for each was different, but he was more than sure that the warm feeling that bubbles in his chest when he looked at Jo was exactly that.
“Let’s get your bags into your room sweetie,” Helen called out from behind the trio. “Bad news about that though, since we don’t have an extra bed you and Jo will have to share your room.”
If looks could kill, Alex would be dead right now. Jo was glaring at him with a look that told him he’d be getting an earful from her once they were alone. For now though, she set a smile on her face and thanked his mom before following him down the hall and into his childhood bedroom.
“Have you ever watched those documentaries about serial killers where they show you where it all began,” Jo spoke as she set her bag down on Alex’s old bed, her eyes scanning the shelves that were mostly bare save for a few wrestling trophies and some family photos. “That’s kind of what being here feels like.” “Oh shut up,” Alex groaned as he laid flat across the bed, his eyes closing as he dragged his hands down his face. “Sorry about the room, I forgot about that. I’ll go sleep on the couch this week.” “No no it’s okay, I can sleep on the couch. You were nice enough to invite me out here, it’s the least I can do,” Jo reached for her bag, Alex’s hand stopping her as he looked up into her eyes. He could stare at her all day, but his goal at the moment was to make sure he didn’t screw everything up right off the bat. “Seriously Alex, I’ll be fi-”
“We can share, it’ll be fine. And I swear I’ll keep my hands to myself,” Alex smirked at the unamused look on Jo’s face. His own face dropped for a more serious expression as he sat up and met Jo’s gaze. “Really though, you should sleep in here. My mom has a tendency to… wander sometimes. You’re actually lucky you met her on a good day. I just don’t want you sleeping out there all alone if she decides to go off her rocker.”
Jo’s expression softened, one hand coming up to cradle Alex’s cheek as she looked over his face. He knew he probably looked pathetic, but he couldn’t move away from Jo’s touch, “You’re a big softy deep down, I’m learning more and more about you everyday Karev.” “Yeah whatever, I just don’t want you screaming bloody murder and waking up the whole damn neighborhood,” Alex pushed aside the all too familiar warm feeling building in his chest, his eyes moving to his feet as Jo finally stepped away from him. “I’m gonna take a shower, you think you’ll survive the crazies out there?” “Of course I will, I’m going to grill them about all of your dirty secrets so I can blackmail you until next Christmas,” a smirk played on Jo’s face as she made to walk out the room, eyes twinkling as she took in Alex’s shocked expression. “Mmm yeah I didn’t want to tell you but that’s the real reason I’m here. Sorry!”
The rest of the afternoon was relatively uneventful. Aaron came home from football practice with the same aloof attitude Alex had grown used to and he ended up playing Scrabble with the girls. He was amazed at how normal the scene seems, him, Amber, his mom, and Jo all sit around the dining table laughing as they all attempt to use made up words on the game board. He didn’t think that he'd ever felt this domestic in his life, the feeling was so foreign that he had to push down any newfound feelings that came with it.
“Aha! Mistletoe, that’s 15 points and that officially puts me ahead of you Alex,” Jo’s proud voice and smug look was almost enough for Alex to forget that he was now losing. The sparkle in her eyes was too distracting though, something he thinks his sister recognized based on her next words.
“We have mistletoe in the kitchen, maybe you can go stand under it so you can finally get Jo to kiss you,” Alex knew the grin on Amber’s face was one she learned from him, but he still hated it as both his sister and mother began to laugh at his expense. Jo however had a bright red blush covering her cheeks as she ducked her head down. “See! He totally wants to kiss you! And Jo does too!” “That’s enough from you Amber, let’s get to bed,” Helen motioned for Amber to stand as she herself began to leave the room. “Say goodnight to Alex and Jo, we have a long day tomorrow.” “Night, don’t stay up too late,” Amber called  over her shoulder, earning her a reprimand from Helen as the two made their way to their rooms.
Alex was hesitant to move his gaze to Jo, but when he finally did he found that she was already staring right at him. The two hadn’t had much alone time since arriving in Iowa, the quiet of the now empty room almost stifling as they shared a look.
“Ready for bed Princess? If you’re nice I’ll let you have the side further from the window,” Alex stood and held his hand out for Jo, who gladly took it as they walked down the hallway together. The warmth radiating from her sparked the same feeling in Alex’s chest again, a feeling he found he couldn’t push down as Jo stood so close to him.
“Why’d you bring me here? Why me and not anyone else,” Jo’s voice was quiet as she stared up at Alex, the two now back in his bedroom and standing in the middle of the room. Their hands were still intertwined, but there’s a gap between them still. “You could’ve brought anyone with you, why me? Why would you do that for me?” “Shut up, why wouldn’t I,” Alex met Jo’s gaze for a moment, before releasing her hand and moving towards his suitcase. “You’re lucky it’s freaking freezing here, otherwise I’d be sleeping naked.” Jo didn’t chuckle at his joke, instead she moved  silently to grab her pajamas and head to the bathroom. Alex threw himself onto the bed, pressing his face into the pillows as he let out a low scream. Everytime he thought things were going well between them, he screwed it up. Resigning himself to his silent suffering, Alex settled into the bed, getting as comfortable as he could before Jo came back. The bed was only a full, barely big enough for his adult figure, let alone two people.
“You better not hog all the covers, I’ll kick you in the middle of the night,” Jo’s voice startled Alex out of his train of thought, his eyes wandering over her oversized shirt and sleep shorts. He squeezed his eyes shut then, trying to think of literally anything besides the beautiful woman climbing into his bed and laying inches away from him. “Goodnight Alex.” “Night.”
Jo turned onto her side, back facing Alex as they both settled in. There were two minutes of awkward silence before Jo turned around and propped her head on her hand to look at Alex. His eyes were closed, but he could feel the movement of Jo’s body wiggling around the bed, his mind torturing him with the thought. He finally peaked his eyes open, looking at Jo through the darkness.
“What?” “I can’t sleep.” “You didn’t even try.”
“I’m cold. It’s freezing in here.”
“I told you to pack warm pajamas. You were the one who decided to wear a t-shirt and shorts to bed,” Alex sighed and extended his arm out to her. “Come here. I run hot.”
Jo slid over closer to Alex and snuggled against him. It was almost too much to be this close to him. It felt so right. She wanted more than this. She wanted so much more.  She looked up at him, “Alex.” “Jo.”
The moonlight streaming through the windows illuminated Jo’s face briefly, giving Alex a perfect view of her shining eyes and plump lips. It took every bit of self restraint not to lean forward and kiss her right then.
“Was Amber right? Do you really wanna kiss me?” Jo’s voice was impossibly soft as she stared at Alex, his heart stopping at her words. It’s now or never Karev…
“Yes.”
It took all of five seconds for Jo to surge forward and connect their lips. His hands reached out, falling to her hips as she pushed him onto his back and straddled him. After a minute, she pulled back with a grin, “About damn time, I thought I was gonna have to lay here and pretend I don’t wanna jump your bones this whole trip.”
“Jump my bones, huh?” Alex raised his eyebrows, amused. “That bad?”
“Yeah,” Jo admitted as she bit her lip nervously.
“Well lucky for you, I’m always down for anything,” Alex leaned forward and began to kiss her once again, pulling her flush against him. He moved his lips down her throat and found a spot that had her gasping for air. “I want you so bad.”
“Alex, we can’t,” Jo panted breathlessly. “Your family…”
“Why do you think my room is at the opposite end of the house?” He smirked teasingly. “We’ll just have to be quiet.”
Jo was very ready to give in but she stopped herself, “Wait. Tell me this isn’t just a one time thing. Tell me that I’m not just going to be another girl on the list of girls you’ve screwed over the years. Because if that’s all I am to you, let’s stop while we’re ahead. This friendship is too important for me to throw away just for it to last one night.”
Alex paused. She still didn’t get it. She was here in his arms, in his childhood bedroom and she thought she was a meaningless lay. To be fair though, that’s all she’d ever known. Jo hadn’t had a single second of anything real in her life. As much as he wanted her, Alex knew that she needed to know that he was in this. The sex could wait.
Alex reached up to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear. He looked deeply into her eyes and brought a hand up to caress her face, “Earlier tonight, before we got ready for bed you asked me a question. So I am… answering it.”
Jo waited for a few moments and watched as Alex’s mouth opened and closed dumbly, “I don’t hear anything.”
“Shut up.”
“Okay, but…”
“I’m serious.”
“Fine.”
“I love you.”
Jo’s breath caught in her throat as she heard Alex’s words. No one had ever said those words to her before. At least, not with this much sincerity. Jo’s eyes watered, “You love me?”
“I love you,” Alex repeated, taking her chin in his hand. His eyes scanned her face. “You are not a one time thing, Jo. You are my favorite person in the whole world. You could never be a one time thing. You’re everything.”
“I’m scared,” Jo confessed. “But I think I love you, too.”
Alex felt his heart flutter. His lips curved up into a smile, “Really?”
“Yeah,” Jo nodded. She took a hand up to his face and caressed it gently. Never in her life had she felt so completely vulnerable with someone, but also so safe. That’s why the next words that came out of her mouth were easy to say. “Make love to me, please.”
And so he did.
***
The morning after started off as a great one. Jo and Alex woke up in each other’s arms with goofy grins on each one of their faces. A part of Jo couldn’t believe that the night before hadn’t been a dream. But sure enough, when she opened her eyes she found herself in Alex’s childhood bedroom on Christmas morning, listening as his light snores filled the room.
She smiled and leaned over to press a light kiss to his cheek. Alex moved in his sleep and wrinkled his face as he slowly began to wake up. Jo looked down at the confused expression on his face, “Good morning.”
Alex rubbed a hand over his face, “Hold on, that was real? I wasn’t just having a really good dream?”
Jo laughed, “It was real.”
“Thank God, because I really want to continue what we started last night,” Alex wore a smug grin as he pulled Jo’s naked frame closer to his. “What do you say we skip breakfast? Because I don’t know about you, but I’ve got all I need right here.”
“Alex!” Jo shrieked in laughter as she slapped his shoulder. “We can’t. Your family is definitely awake right now and your little sister could bust in here any minute.”
“Ugh, I forgot we’re in Iowa,” Alex groaned. “I should’ve booked a hotel.”
“Oh stop it,” Jo rolled her eyes. “You weren’t going to book a hotel when you had a perfectly good bed right here. Besides, staying here with your family just means that you and I get to sleep together, in this small bed where we are practically forced to huddle for warmth, every night. And I don’t know about you, but I can think of tons of ways to take advantage of that.”
“I like the way you think,” Alex leaned down and kissed Jo, allowing his hands to roam her body. They kept that up for a few moments before things got a little heated. Alex was just about to roll over on top of Jo when the door swung open.
“Oh my! I’m so sorry,” Helen stuttered as she stood in shock in the doorway. She looked around nervously before closing the door and continuing what she was going to say from the outside. “I’m sorry, kids. I just--I wanted to let you know that Amber is downstairs making pancakes for breakfast and they should be ready in a few minutes. She wanted me to come get you so you could come down before they get cold. But um… I can tell her that you guys are still… sleeping or something.” With that, the pair heard as Helen walked away, her footsteps getting fainter by the second.
Alex and Jo had immediately separated when the door opened and were now wearing equally mortified expressions on their faces. Jo looked over at Alex with wide eyes only to find his face tainted with embarrassment. Out of all the people who could’ve walked in on the two of them, it had to be his mother.
“Oh fuck.”
“Holy shit.”
The two cursed simultaneously. It took them each a moment to process what had just happened and what it meant.
“Oh my God, Alex. Your mother! Your mother just walked in on us, naked, in your bed, about to have sex!” Jo flopped back down onto the pillow.
“I know,” Alex grimaced as he mirrored Jo and flopped down on his side of the bed. “This might just be my worst nightmare.”
They laid there for a moment in silence, each one trying to figure out how they could possibly show their faces downstairs after what had occurred. Alex and Jo finally made eye contact after minutes of laying there in discomfort. Almost immediately, the two burst into laughter.
Struggling to catch their breaths, the two decided to get up and get dressed. What was done was done, and they had to move on with the fact that Helen had caught them in a very unfortunate set of circumstances.
When they finally walked downstairs, Alex and Jo did their best to avoid eye contact with Helen and kept their heads down, worrying about the pancakes in front of them instead. Noticing the lack of dialogue, Aaron made a face, “What’s up with you two?”
“Nothing,” Alex attempted a nonchalant shrug.
Amber raised her eyebrow, “Only people who have something to hide say nothing when asked something.” She narrowed her eyes at the pair, who were desperately trying to ignore the uncomfortable glances that Helen was sending their way. “Mom said that you two were sleeping when she went upstairs to wake you up. But when she came back, she looked all uncomfortable. So, why are all three of you acting all weird?”
“Maybe she caught them having sex,” Aaron teased as he took a bite of his pancake.
When no one answered, Aaron’s eyes bulged, “No freaking way.”
“Mom caught you guys having sex?” Amber exclaimed. “I knew it! Aaron, you owe me ten bucks.”
“We were not having sex,” Alex shook his head at his siblings.
“That’s not what it looked like from where I was standing,” Helen muttered under her breath.
Jo looked like she wanted the earth to open up and swallow her, “Technically, we weren’t having sex.”
“Is that what the kids are saying nowadays?” Helen raised her eyebrows. “Whatever. As long as you two are being safe and having fun, that’s all that matters, right?”
“So… are you two together now or what?” Amber asked the question that everyone had been wondering.
Alex looked over at Jo and smiled softly. He placed his arm around her shoulder and planted a tender kiss on her forehead, “Yeah. We are.”
“Alex in an actual relationship?” Aaron grinned. “It really is a Christmas miracle.”
About two second later, there was half a pancake on Aaron’s face.

The Little Bit of Hope I Cling To - Part 4
Izzie goes to Grey Sloan in hopes of seeing Bailey, Meredith, or Alex. She meets Dr. Karev instead.
the end of the road
Tumblr media
Part 4
——————
The months following were smooth sailing, until they weren’t. Jo was about seven months in her pregnancy when it seemed like everything had gone to shit. Izzie got sick again and was back in a hospital bed undergoing multiple treatments and would be undergoing a resection for new mets that appeared along her small intestine.
Everything had been going so well. Izzie had been hired by Alex as a full time neurosurgeon at Grey Sloan, Geo was thriving in his school and enjoying have “cousins” to play with, even Piper—the damn dog—was happy.
That’s why Jo was so pissed. For months, she’d been working tirelessly on her fellowship research to find a breakthrough that could maybe save Izzie’s life and stop the spread of her cancer. Finding out that the cancer was back was like a punch in the gut for all the time Jo had spent trying to come up with a solution. It was made increasingly difficult by the fact that Jo had become friends of sorts with her husband’s ex-wife. They had forged a friendship from the most unexpected of circumstances and it was one that Jo was grateful for.
Jo’s impending motherhood didn’t help the situation either. She knew that she’d be going on maternity leave in a few months, but what would that mean for Izzie? Jo couldn’t just stop now. Not when Izzie needed her the most.
She’d been sitting in the attending’s lounge with her head in her hands when she heard someone shuffle through the door.
“Hey.”
Jo looked up to find Link standing in the doorway. She gave him a small smile, “Hey.”
“You okay?”
“Nope,” Jo laughed dryly. “I’m stressed and tired and my feet hurt and I just need to figure out this medical breakthrough so that a woman that I’ve grown to care about doesn’t die.”
“So... just another Thursday, right?” Link quipped sarcastically. He sat down next to Jo and put a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Look, I know you feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders, but it’s not all on just you. Whether you figure it out or not, it doesn’t make you any less of a good doctor. It doesn’t mean that you didn’t try your hardest. You are going to run yourself to the ground if you keep going at the rate you’re going, and I know that can’t be good for the baby.”
Jo let a tear slide down her cheek, “I know... I just wish there was something more I could do. I’m running out of options. She’s my patient and it’s my job to help her, but she’s also become the most unlikely friend. I just... I don’t want her to die.”
“No one wants her to die. But if she does, it won’t be your fault. It won’t be because you didn’t try hard enough. It’ll be because she had cancer and try as we might, sometimes the cancer wins. Regardless of who wins, you have given her time. Time she wouldn’t have had if she never would came to this hospital looking for old friends and instead stumbling upon you. She gets time and a chance to fight because of you. Don’t forget that,” Link pulled Jo in for a sideways hug. “Now, dry up those tears and go to her room and tell her what’s next in your plan to try to save her life.”
Jo chuckled softly, “Thank you.”
“That’s what I’m here for,” Link shrugged. “Seriously though, you’re gonna wanna wipe your face. You’ve got some mascara running down your face.”
“Shut up,” Jo rolled her eyes and stood to look in the mirror. Yikes. She did look pretty wrecked. She grabbed a tissue from the box on the coffee table and began to blot her face.
Satisfied with her appearance, Jo said goodbye to Link and made her way down to Izzie’s hospital room. As she approached, she saw Alex with Geo on his lap and Meredith talking to Izzie as she knitted a scarf. Smiling, Jo knocked on the door as she walked in, “Hey. I see you have some company.”
“Jo! We were just talking about you—oh my goodness... your belly looks absolutely precious today,” Izzie beamed brightly.
“Thank you,” Jo nodded gratefully and looked over at Alex who was staring at her with love in his eyes.
“Oh! You see, that’s the look. The one we were talking about,” Meredith pointed at Alex.
“What look?” Jo scrunched her face.
“The lovey-dovey look Alex gets on his face anytime you walk into the room. It’s like he worships the ground you walk on,” Izzie teased, a wide grin on her face.
“Yup,” Meredith nodded. “The look of complete and utter adoration.”
Geo looked in between Jo and Alex briefly before agreeing, “Uncle Alex looks at you like you’re the most pwetty thing ever to exist!”
“That’s because she is,” Alex ruffled Geo’s hair, causing the young boy to erupt into a fit of giggles. He looked up at Jo again, “How are you feeling?”
“Good... a bit tired and Link may have just witnessed me have a hormonal break down in the lounge, but mostly good,” Jo ran a hand over her swollen stomach. “Baby is kicking a lot today.”
“Can I feel?” Geo asked excitedly, jumping up from his spot on Alex’s lap. “Pwetty please?”
“Sure,” Jo smiled at the boy and guided his little hand up to where the baby’s feet were. “You feel that thump? That’s the baby.”
“Woah,” Geo’s eyes widened in wonder. “This is so cool!”
“It is pretty cool isn’t it?” Jo winked at him. “What’s even cooler is that in a couple months, the baby will be here and we’ll get to hold and cuddle him or her all day long.”
“I can’t wait to have a baby cousin,” Geo looked over at Izzie. “It’s something happy and we need all the happy so mommy can get better.”
“You are so right, Geo. A big part of your mommy’s recovery is going to depend on her being very strong. Happiness gives us something to hope for and it makes us oh so very strong,” Jo replied.
The three other adults watched the scene unfold with smiles on their faces. Izzie turned to Jo, “You are going to be a wonderful mother. I can tell.”
“Thank you,” Jo reached over and squeezed one of Izzie’s hands. “I wanted to come in and tell you that I’m actively making plans for what to do next. Right now, surgery is still our best option, but I’m doing everything in my power to figure out something else. Until then, you’ll continue with the IL-2 treatments to shrinks those mets down as much as possible. I want to do the resection in a week from today.”
“Sounds good,” Izzie nodded. “Enough about me, someone tell me something happy or funny to help me distract myself from the fact that I’m stuck here while everyone else is performing surgery. Ooh! Like have you guys figured out a name yet?”
“Not yet,” Alex shook his head. “We haven’t really had a chance to sit down and talk about names. Hell, we don’t even know if it’s a boy or a girl.”
That was true. Originally, Jo and Alex were going to find out the sex of the baby, but at the last minute chose to wait and be surprised. It was exciting and made it even more fun when people tried to place their bets on the sex of the baby.
“You better hope for your sake it’s a boy, because if you have a little girl who looks like Jo, that’s it. You’re a goner,” Meredith smirked
“Oh I can see it now,” Izzie laughed. “Alex freaking out because she’s going out on date when she sixteen.”
Alex scowled, “Shut up. We’re no where close to that so we’re not even going to think about it.”
“You see? He’s going to have a complete meltdown if that baby is a girl,” Meredith pointed at Jo’s bump. “What do you think it is Jo?”
“Honestly, I haves to clue. It’s changes every day. Today I’m feeling boy, but I’m a couple hours from now I might think it’s a girl.”
“Well, if you guys decide to go with the theme of naming your babies after a loved one, just remember that no one has named a baby after me yet,” Meredith grinned slyly.
“Shut up,” Alex threw a paper cup in Meredith’s direction, causing the three women to laugh.
***
“Helen, I swear I’m fine,” Jo insisted as she walked into the hospital, her mother in law trailing behind her.
“No you are not,” Helen frowned. “I know that I’m not entirely mentally stable, but Jo, I gave birth to three children. I know what labor looks like. You are having contractions.”
“They’re Braxton Hicks,” Jo tried to explain. “Besides, I am only thirty five weeks. I have a whole month before the baby is supposed to be born. I haven’t even gone on maternity leave yet.”
“Now I see why Alex called me,” Helen muttered under her breath. “Okay, fine. Maybe you aren’t in labor but you need to slow down.”
“Trust me, Helen, I would love to, but I can’t. I have patients to take care of and my research. I can’t afford to stop now. Not when I’m on the brink of something that could save many lives. Not when Izzie Stevens is finally getting discharged again today,” Jo said as Helen followed her into the attendings lounge.
Truthfully, Jo was in pain. She’d been having contractions ever since four in the morning, but did her best to ignore it. She was tough. She could handle a little pain and discomfort. It wasn’t time yet.
“Wait, is this the ex-wife Izzie Stevens?” Helen made a face at the information, while Jo changed into her scrubs. “Alex mentioned that his ex-wife was here getting treatment. You’re her doctor?”
“Yes,” Jo nodded as she pulled on the scrub top and fluffed her hair out.
“You are a saint,” Helen shook her head.
“She’s really not that bad,” Jo turned to Helen. “I’m going to round on her right now if you want to join me.”
“Might as well,” Helen shrugged. “I promised Alex I’d stay with you today.”
“Alex needs to calm down. Worrying like that is just going to give him more gray hair than what he already has. I am fine. The baby is fine,” Jo walked out the lounge and into the hallway in the direction of Izzie’s room.
Just as they were about to walk into Izzie’s room, Jo was hit by a powerful contraction. She took a deep breath and grabbed onto the doorway, exhaling in pain. She shook her head and proceeded into the room.
“Hey Izzie,” Jo greeted and smiled when she saw Geo. “Hello to you, too Geo. Aren’t you supposed to be in school?”
“Yes he is, but mommy decided to let him skip because she’s leaving the hospital today,” Izzie grinned.
“That’s right! I checked all of your levels and your most recent scans, and I feel very good about discharging you today,” Jo shared the good news. She turned and motioned for Helen to walk in, ignoring another contraction. “Iz! This is Alex’s mom, Helen Karev.”
“Hi,” Helen gave Izzie a wary smile.
“Oh! Hi, Mrs. Karev, it’s so nice to meet you,” Izzie shook Helen’s hand. She looked over at Jo. “I didn’t know that he introduced you to his mom.”
“Yeah, we met just a couple weeks before the wedding. Went out to Iowa to visit,” Jo recounted. “Alex called her and flew her out here to be the pregnancy police.”
“He did not ask me to be the pregnancy police,” Helen rolled her eyes. He’d mentioned that your due date was approaching soon and I told him that I wanted to be here to see you before you gave birth, so he came to Iowa and flew out here with me. He said he’d do the same once the baby was born. But it looks to me like he won’t have to make the second trip because you are having contractions every three minutes.”
Jo’s eyes widened as she realized that her mother-in-law had been measuring the time between her contractions, “They’re three minutes apart? They’re coming steady?”
“Yes, honey. Like I said ever since we left the house, you are in labor,” Helen reiterated and placed a hand on Jo’s shoulder. “You need to cancel the rest of your day.”
“No, no, no. I am not having this baby right now,” Jo shook her head stubbornly. “It’s two early. He or she has still got to cook for five more weeks. Their lungs still need a few more weeks to develop, they don’t have enough body fat to regulate temperature yet, and they won’t be strong enough to breastfeed. So, this baby is staying inside.”
“Um... Jo,” Izzie called out. “You’re bleeding.”
“I’m what?” Jo looked down to see a dark streak running down the leg of her scrub pants. She clutched her stomach in pain again. “Oh, crap. Call Alex and Meredith.”
“Geo, run to the nurses station and tell them that we need a wheel chair for Dr. Jo and that they need to page Uncle Alex right away. It’s an emergency,” Izzie instructed her son, who nodded and ran out into the hall. She carefully stood up from her bed and walked over to where Jo was leaning against the wall. “Okay, you’re going to be fine. Jo, how about you let me feel your belly?”
Izzie felt around for a minute before scrunching her eyes in concern, “Alright, keep in mind that I am a neurosurgeon and I’m not exactly sure that this is what’s going on, but I think your placenta ruptured. There shouldn’t be this much blood.”
“Is there anything I can do?” Helen asked worriedly.
“Just hold her up while I find Geo with the wheelchair,” Izzie rushed out of the room and found her son walking next to a nurse strolling a wheelchair. “Did you page Alex Karev?”
“Yes,” the nurse nodded.
“Okay, you also need to page OB and Meredith Grey. I think Jo’s experiencing placental abruption and she may need to undergo a crash C-section.”
“I’m on it.”
***
The following minutes were a frenzy of activity as Alex—who’d been elbow deep in a kid’s body cavity—was notified of his wife going into preterm labor. He got tagged out by Bailey and ran out to find Meredith standing outside the OR board, trying to figure out which OR they’d taken Jo to.
When they got to OR 2, both Meredith and Alex were happy to find that Jo was not alone. Standing there holding her hand was Izzie, who was muttering soothing words to her, “Everything is going great so far. You are doing good, the baby is okay, and Alex is on his way.”
“I’m here!” Alex announced as he came up beside Jo and placed a kiss on her forehead. “Hey, I’m here.”
“Oh thank God,” Jo breathed out a sigh of relief. “This wasn’t the plan. God, Alex this wasn’t the plan.”
“When the hell have our lives ever gone to plan?” Alex chuckled light. “It’s okay, because we caught in time and in a few minutes we’re going to have a beautiful baby.”
“Where’s Meredith?” Jo called out.
“I’m right here Jo,” Meredith walked up to where Izzie had been sitting my Jo’s head. “We got this, thank you.”
“Oh. Yeah... no problem,” suddenly, Izzie felt very out of place. For the first time in the months since she’d returned to Seattle, she felt like an outsider looking in. “Okay. I’m going to go sit with your mom, Alex. Keep her some company.”
“Thank you.”
***
A little over an hour had passed when Meredith finally came out to the waiting room on the Labor & Delivery floor. She wore a bright smile on her face, “Mom and baby are just fine. There was some bleeding but we got that under control and Alex stood over the peds fellow’s shoulder making sure that the baby was fine.”
“Oh thank God,” Izzie let out a sigh of relief. “They’re both okay?”
“Yes,” Meredith nodded. “The baby’s lungs are fully developed. She might have to stay in an incubator a couple nights to regulate her body temperature, but she’s healthy.”
“Did you say she?” Helen asked.
“I did. It’s a girl.”
Izzie laughed, “Oh my God. I knew it! Please tell me she looks exactly like Jo.”
“She’s a carbon copy,” Meredith joined Izzie’s laughter. “I would’ve thought Jo’s cloned herself if it weren’t for obvious mop of hair on her head that definitely came from Alex.”
“Can we go see them?” Geo pulled on Meredith’s scrubs. “Pleaseeeeee!”
“Yes, you can go see them. That’s why I came out to get you,” Meredith extended her hand out to the little boy. “Come on, follow me.”
They walked down the halls of L&D until they finally found themselves outside a room. Somewhere along the way, Amelia, Link, and Bailey had joined them. Meredith knocked on the door before walking in, “I brought some visitors.”
Jo and Alex looked up from the tiny pink bundle in their arms to see their friends—their family walk into the room. Alex grinned widely as he held his daughter in his arms and stood up to greet everyone. He was jittering with excitement, “Dude, I’m a dad!”
The room erupted into laughter. Amelia chuckled, “Yeah we know.”
There was a shuffling by the doorway as someone pushed their way through, “I’m here! I was in surgery. Did I miss it?”
Maggie burst through the door eyes wide, struggling to catch her breath, “Oh my God. It’s a girl!”
“Yes, it’s a girl,” Jo sighed dreamily, very clearly in love with the child in her husband’s arms.
“She’s absolutely beautiful,” Helen fawned over the small child. “I have a granddaughter!”
“Well? Are you going to tell us her name?” Bailey asked expectantly.
Alex and Jo exchanged a look before answering simultaneously, “Taylor Joy Karev.”
“TJ for short,” Jo added.
Izzie watched as everyone—her son included—took their turns meeting and holding the precious little newborn. It was a sweet moment, one that she thought she’d never get to see. It was... odd, seeing her ex-husband and his wife welcome their child into the world. It was odd being a part of the process. It was odd that they let her in after the history between her and Alex.
Jo must’ve noticed Izzie’s detached expression because soon, Izzie was being pulled out of her reverie by Jo’s concerned voice, “Izzie, are you okay?”
“I should be the one asking you that,” Izzie winked. “You scared me a little there. But of course Taylor had to have a dramatic entrance into the world, she’s a Karev after all. Already like her father in that way.”
“She’s been in this world for two hours and she already has him wrapped around her little finger,” Jo mused quietly, looking at her husband helping the Geo and the other kids—who’d been brought over from school—hold their newest cousin. “I don’t blame him, though... I didn’t think I could love anyone this much. I didn’t think I’d ever love anyone more than I love Alex, but this little girl... she’s everything. Absolutely everything.”
“I know exactly how you feel,” Izzie sat down on the edge of Jo’s bed. “When I saw Geo for the first time, my heart cracked wide open. It didn’t matter that I hadn’t given birth to him. I knew he was mine and I was his. Not a day goes by where I’m not grateful for every second I get to spend with him. Especially, since my cancer returned.”
Izzie paused and thought carefully about her next words, “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you. I wouldn’t alive right now. But I also, wouldn’t be here in this room, surrounded by friends watching my ex-husband hold his newborn daughter if it weren’t for you. You have helped me mend broken relationships and have given me a community again. And that’s all because of you. God knows they wouldn’t be as welcoming to me if it weren’t for your genuine care and compassion. So thank you, for giving me life back.”
About halfway through Izzie’s short speech, Jo felt a couple tears slip her eyes. She tried to wave it off as the hormones, “You’re welcome. Thank you for staying with me until TJ was born.”
“It was my pleasure and honor,” Izzie squeezed Jo’s hand lightly, marveling at the shift in roles. For the first time, Jo was in the hospital bed and Izzie was standing about it. “It’s weird seeing you in a hospital gown instead for scrubs.”
“It’s weird being in a hospital gown,” Jo answered. She observed Izzie for a minute. “Are you okay? You got discharged today and instead ended up getting me to an OR in time so that I didn’t lose too much blood.”
“I’m good. Honestly, I feel really good,” Izzie assured. “I know I’m not better yet and I know that I’ve still got to fight, but things like these... things like these remind me that I have so much to fight for. I want this. I want to be here and watch TJ grow. I want to see Zola, Bailey, and Ellis grow. I want to see my son grow and I want to have another kid. I want to marry someone that looks at me the way Alex looks at you, or Ben Warren looks at Bailey. So as long as I have left, I’m gonna keep fighting for those things.”
Alex—who’d heard the tail end of the conversation between the two women—walked up with baby Taylor resting comfortably in his embrace, “And we’re going to help you do that.”
Jo nodded in confirmation, “Anything you need, we’re here.”
“Thanks,” Izzie smiled and finally turned her attention to the small child. “Okay, it’s Auntie Izzie’s turn to hold this little one. Everyone else got a turn except for me.”
Alex handed the baby over and Izzie grinned widely when she finally got a good look at the little girl, “Oh, Alex. You are in so much trouble.”
“Why?” Alex scrunched his face in question.
“Because she’s gorgeous and looks exactly like her mother. And with the parents she has—ha, I cannot wait to see what kind of trouble she gets herself into,” Izzie laughed. “Let’s just pray she doesn’t take after you and your... wild side.”
“Oh God, no. Nope,” Alex shook his head. “She’s not allowed to even look at a boy until she’s thirty.”
“Okay,” Jo snorted in amusement. “You’re just terrified because now you finally realized that you ten years ago, was every father’s worst nightmare.”
“God, I’m gonna pay for that, aren’t I? This right here, this little girl is karma for all of the terrible things I did throughout the years,” Alex’s eyes were wide in terror.
“Yup,” Izzie hummed and cradled the little one closer. “I’m happy for you guys. Truly.”
“Thank you,” Alex’s face curved up into a crooked smile. “I’m glad you’re okay.”
“You’re going to stick around right? You’re not leaving Seattle or anything?” Jo asked.
“I’m sticking around,” Izzie took a deep breath. “Years ago, I told Mer that this was just a place I worked, but I was wrong. This is home. This is family."
***
Five Years Later
“TJ! Get your butt in here right now!” Jo yelled as she tripped on a pile of toys in the living room. She waited until she heard the pitter-patter of feet signaling her daughter’s appearance. “What have I said about leaving these on the floor. Someone can get hurt.”
“Sorry mommy!” TJ’s little eyes widened in apology.
“It’s okay baby, just pick them up when we get home later. Right now we have to go. We’re going to be late,” Jo reached out her hand and led her daughter out the house.
When they reached the car, she saw Alex fiddling around in the backseat. Jo smirked, “Having some trouble there?”
“I can’t get this stupid seat belt over her dress,” Alex grumbled. “Was this really necessary?”
“You know how Izzie is. Everything has to be perfect. Here let me do it,” Jo chuckled as she pushed Alex aside to look at the three year old girl that Alex was struggling to strap in. “Hi, Bella Mae. You look so beautiful. Mommy is going to help you get all strapped in because Daddy is having some issues.”
“Daddy habbin’ issues,” Bella giggled quietly. “I wike my dwess.”
“I like your dress too,” Jo complimented the little girl. Jo smoothed down her daughter’s dress as she buckled her into the car seat. Bella was her goofy, energetic kid. Rather than being a carbon copy of her mother like Taylor was, Bella took after the Karev side. Alex constantly talked about how Bella reminded him of his sister, Amber when she was a little girl. Bella and Alex had the same big brownish-greenish eyes and crooked grins. “Alright, Bells. You are all set.”
“Tank you, mommy!”
“You’re welcome,” Jo kissed the little girl’s forehead.
Finally, Jo turned over to the little man that was sitting in between his two sisters. Wyatt Alexander Karev was a cubby two year old that was the perfect blend of both Jo and Alex. It was hard to determine where features of one parent ended and the other began.
Wyatt gave Jo a cheesy smile, “Mama!”
“Hi munchkin! You look so handsome,” Jo ruffled his little curls.
“Tanks mama!”
“You ready?” Alex asked as he rounded the car.
“Yeah. Let’s go,” Jo nodded and thanked Alex as he opened the door for her and helped her inside the car.
When they arrived to the venue, Alex and Jo hurried to take the kids out of the car and walk in the direction they had been told. Standing outside the room, Jo knocked on the door.
“Come in!”
The family of five walked in to see Izzie standing in an ivory gown with a giant smile on her face, “Oh thank God you’re here. I was worried you’d be late.”
“I can’t be late, I’m the maid of honor,” Jo pulled Izzie into a hug. “You look amazing. Decker isn’t going to know what hit him when he sees you.”
“Jo’s right. You look hot, Iz,” Alex grinned widely. “You’ve still got it.”
Izzie rolled her eyes, “Thank you.” She let out a shaky breath. “I’m kind of nervous.”
“Do you want to make a run for it?” Alex asked. “I’ll tell Mer to gear up the getaway car. We’ll leave the kids with Maggie and Amelia and the the four of us will be out of here before anyone notices.”
“No I don’t want to make a run for it. Can’t a girl be nervous? Weren’t you nervous to get married?” Izzie made a face.
“Nope,” Alex shook his head.
“Seriously? You didn’t get nervous? Not even when you married me?” Izzie’s face was painted with disbelief.
“When I married you, it was so last minute, I didn’t have time to be nervous. And when I married Jo, I’d never been more sure of anything in my life. Also, our wedding day was a mess and we had sex in a shed next to corpse and practically missed the entire thing,” Alex answered simply.
“Fair enough.”
“Just take a deep breath. You’ll be fine,” Jo placed a comforting hand on Izzie’s shoulder. “You two love each other and Decker adores Geo and Gabe.”
“Speak of the little devils,” Izzie chuckled as her sons barged into the bridal suite.
Geo had grown a lot in the past five years. At eleven years old, the boy was almost as tall as Izzie. His brown hair darkened a bit and started to curl slightly. He looked more and more grown up everyday.
Gabe had been adopted about four years ago at the age of three. Like Zola, Gabe had come to Grey Sloan for a surgical procedure as a toddler through the African exchange program that Alex had spearheaded. Gabe had needed surgery for a cardiac defect that Maggie had operated on. When Izzie heard that one of the little boys from the program was an orphan, she went to go meet him for herself and fell in love. The now seven year old was a boundless spring of energy that brought so much light and laughter into their lives.
“Mom!” The two boys gasped when they saw their mom standing in her dress. “You look so pretty!”
“She does, doesn’t she?” Jo smiled. “It’s almost time to start so you guys need to go find Decker and get ready, okay?”
The young boys gave their mom a hug and another compliment before making their way out the room. With a couple minutes left before the ceremony started, Izzie took another deep breath.
Meredith walked into the suite, “Okay. Our flower girls, Ellis, TJ, and Bella are ready. The ring bearers are with Decker and the groomsmen. The guests are all here. The priest is just waiting on you.”
“Let’s get you married,” Jo grinned excitedly and followed Meredith as she led the flower girls to the aisle.
Finally, it was just Izzie and Alex left, waiting outside the double doors for their turn to enter. Izzie bit her lip nervously, “Are you sure this isn’t weird? You walking me down the aisle? I mean you’ve seen me naked.”
“You know how many people I’ve seen naked?” Alex huffed a laugh. He extended his arm for Izzie to take. “No. It’s not weird. The past few years have been some of the best of my life. And not just because I married Jo and had three kids. Having you back has been great. You’ve become family. I’m so excited for you to get married and I feel honored that I get to be the one who walks you down the aisle. So, just shut up and start walking before I have to kick you down the aisle.”
And with that, Izzie realized that it had finally come full circle. Five years ago, she’d returned to Seattle with very little hope to cling to. Today, she had a family, a support system that was celebrating her as she finally got her happy ending. It might seem strange or unconventional to others, but she wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
The end.

Hi guys! I hope you enjoyed the final part of this series. I loved writing this story. I'll confess, Izzie Stevens has never been one of my favorite characters, but writing this redemption arc and beautiful ending for her character, while preserving jolex is something that I wish we would've seen in canon. Let me know what you thought of this and don't hesitate to follow me on Tumblr @iamtrebleclefstories for more content!

“Alright,” Izzie said as they all piled into the car. Alex drove this time as Jo claimed the passenger seat next to him, with Izzie in the seat behind her. “So that each of us can have a bit of alone time in the hotel room, why don't the two of you go out on a date and I'll hang out at the hotel. Then when you get back, I'll go hang down at the pool, or the bar or something, so you guys can have the rooms to yourself.”
“You don't have to do that, Izzie,” Jo said, turning to look back at her.
“Oh really, so you two can be quiet?” Izzie asked, raising an eyebrow at them.
“Hey, that's not my issue,” Alex said looking over at Jo as she gasped and leaned over to slap his arm.
“Excuse you and who's the one making me scream,” Jo said looking pointedly over at him. “And I recall you being very vocal as well.”
“Okay!” Izzie said as she held up her hands and stopped the augment before it got out of control. “Let’s just stick to the plan.”
“Alright,” Jo and Alex agreed with a nod as they looked over at each other and shared a smile.
The three of them got back to the hotel and Alex and Izzie started packing bags for the kids as Jo got ready for their date. Alex drew the short stick and had to drop the bags off at his Mom's house, but he took advantage of seeing the kids again and gave them extra hugs and kisses before heading back. They were doing good when he left, as they were helping his mom set the table while she made dinner. Although he was still nervous about leaving them overnight. He knew realistically that his mom was a good caregiver, but memories of the past came up. However, his mom was in a better place, and they were in good hands.
Alex made his way back to the hotel room and smiled at the thought of what awaited him. He loved it when Jo dressed up. She was always naturally beautiful, but there was something about the sight of his wife in a dress and heels that sent him wild. Alex opened the door and looked around only to find that the hotel room was unusually empty, but the light in the bathroom was on. He knocked on the door and waited a second before she replied.
“We’ll be out in a second,” Jo shouted back to him.
“Okay,” Alex said, but he still opened the door to see Jo and Izzie in front of the mirror. Jo was putting the finishing touches on her eyeliner while Izzie was curling her hair with the curling iron. Jo was in her tights and a bra while Izzie was in a robe and pajamas. Jo turned so she could set down her eyeliner and Izzie followed her with the hair curler, before taking out the cirl and twisting it so it set.
Jo caught his eyes in the mirror and shouted with a laugh. “Get out, I’m not dressed yet!”
“It’s nothing I haven’t seen less of before,” Alex said with a smirk as his eyes never left her body.
“I said, get out!” Jo yelled but she also laughed as she threw her eyeliner at him.
“Alright,” Alex said, taking one last look at her before he closed the door and heard the lock click as the girls giggled.
He could hear the two of them talking in the bathroom, although he couldn't make out what they were whispering about. Alex shook his head as he went into the other room. Never did he think that Jo and Izzie would be such friends. He didn't even think that they would like each other at first, but here they were. With Izzie helping Jo get ready for her date with him.
Alex reluctantly went back into the room and decided to dress up as well. He changed into a nice shirt and combed his hair. Then he trimmed his beard and massaged some oil into the hair. It was still a little coarse, but Jo never minded, except for when it was rough on her thighs. He fully intended to eat her out tonight, so he added a bit of beard softener to it.
He was done getting ready before Izzie and Jo had even stopped giggling in the bathroom. So he patiently waited on the couch, pulling out his phone and scrolling through social media for a little while. The teenagers on the Peds floor had gotten him addicted to TikTok. He had even made a few videos. They were all Peds and surgery related and he had gotten to know a few of the other pediatric doctors on the app as they had all networked.
After what seemed like forever, the bathroom door opened and Jo came out to greet him. He smiled and got up, brushing out his shirt that was a little wrinkled from his suitcase. The sight of his wife was a beautiful picture in front of him. Jo's hair was in soft curls and her eyelids glittered with dark eyeshadow. Her lips were bright with the red lip gloss that sparked. Jo had always preferred lip gloss over lipstick and he loved how soft and perfectly kissable her lips were.
She was in a black sleek dress. It hung to her hips and her breasts with a v-neckline that dipped low and left little to the imagination as her cleavage spilled over. He found it hard to take his eyes away from her breasts. The end of the dress was short, very short, going over the curve of her hips before it stopped. It made her legs look longer, especially with the heels she was wearing. She was stunning and he couldn't take his eyes off of her.
“You look beautiful,” Alex said as his eyes sparkled for her
“Thank you,” Jo blushed as she looked down and smoothed her skirt.
“But now I feel underdressed,” Alex said as he looked down at his wrinkled shirt.
“You look very handsome,” Jo said, and he could tell from her expression that she was equally enamored with him.
She looked at him with eyes full of love as she came forward and wrapped her arms around him. She put her hand on his neck as they leaned in for a kiss. Alex eagerly hugged her hips before moving his hands down to her ass as he squeezed her. They were only interrupted by a whistle from Izzie as she broke them apart.
“Alright you two love birds get out of here before you get nasty in front of me,” Izzie said, wrinkling her nose and shaking her head.
“Thank you so much for helping me get ready,” Jo said as she grabbed her purse.
“Of course, it's always fun to do someone's hair and Alexis never lets me do more than a ponytail or braid,” Izzie said, going over to the couch as she grabbed her blanket and curled up, ready for her own night of fun.
“I know and Luna sees Alexis protest and now doesn’t like it when I try to do her hair,” Jo said with a soft pout.
“Are we leaving or not,” Alex asked looking between the two of them as Izzie sighed, and Jo rolled her eyes, but grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the door.
“Please call if you need anything,” Jo said as he helped her into her coat.
“Don't worry about me, I’ll be having my own fun,” Izzie said with a wave of her hand, and they left the room.
………………………………………………………………
Alex never thought of himself as being the kind of man who would be in a lovey-dovey relationship. Who would be obnoxiously gross and romantic with their wife, but here he was. He was sitting at the table next to her holding her hands across the table and smiling at her just because she was so energetic as she talked about the latest technology introduced to the maternity ward. She was so beautiful when she talked about something she was passionate about. He tried to pay attention to what she was talking about as well, but he couldn't help but get lost in her eyes. He just smiled, enchanted with her words and Jo definitely noticed.
She paused, catching his smile with a smile of her own and a little glint in her eye. Alex couldn't help but reach forward, moving to the chair next to her. He never dropped her hand as he reached up to hold her cheek and kiss her. The smile was still on her lips as they kissed. She quickly moaned as he let his passion take the lead and tilted his head, pressing his lips against hers as she opened her mouth inviting his tongue in.
His hands quickly went from holding her hand to trailing along the edge of her inner thigh. His hand inched up higher as he teased the skin there until Jo pulled away from the kiss prompting his hand to still on her thigh.
“Come on let's go back to the hotel where I can properly show off the lingerie I wore for you tonight,” Jo said with a mischievous and sexy glint in her eye as she smirked and closed her legs forcing him to get trapped.
She looked around and flagged down a waiter to get their bill. They quickly paid, skipping out on dessert, something they usually never do before they raced back to the hotel room. Alex gave Izzie a fair warning that they were on their way up as they continued to kiss in the elevator. They stumbled down the hall of the hotel as they kissed, not really paying attention to where they were supposed to be going.
Alex fumbled to put the card into the lock and had to tear himself away from Jo’s lips. She whimpered at the loss of his lips and trailed her lips down his neck, making him moan as he finally fit the key card into the door. They finally push the door open and stumble into the room.
“Is Izzie still here?” Jo asked as they looked around for her, until a little alert pinged on his phone.
“She’s already at the pool,” Alex said with a nod as he put his phone on the desk along with both of their coats.
“Oh thank god,” Jo said as she quickly captured his lips again in a heated kiss as she pulled at the buttons on his shirt.
They didn't even make it to the bed as Jo pulled him to the floor to fulfill her needs. As they tear each other's clothes off. He did find enough time to appreciate the lingerie she was wearing as the black lace across her breasts and hips left little to the imagination.
They did make it into the bed for a few more rounds and before they finished in ecstasy with several orgasms between them. Finally, Alex pulled the blanket over them as Jo curled up against him and laid her head on his chest. He smiled as he wrapped his arms around her and her eyes fluttered shut.
“We should get a sitter more often,” Alex said as she smiled, opening her eyes again.
“Well it's been a while, we had to make up for lost time,” Jo said, further nestling into his chest.
“Well, I'd say we definitely made up for it,” Alex said with a little chuckle as Jo laughed as well. Things went quiet again as Jo closed her eyes and he ran his hands up and down her back.
“We should text Izzie that it’s safe to come up,” Jo said with a yawn, not even bothering to cover her mouth as she just snuggled back into his chest. “Oh, and we should get the lingerie off of the floor.”
“Already done,” Alex said as he kissed her forehead and Jo smiled.
He knew she was exhausted and as he started to run his hands through his hair. He wondered how fast she would fall asleep. However, the ringing of his phone interrupted them as they both looked up and saw his mom's picture across the screen.
“Oh no,” Jo said, sitting up on her elbows as Alex reached for the phone.
“Hey Mom, what is it?” Alex asked anticipating that she was calling for them to come get one of the kids, but instead, she greeted him with a happy tone.
“Hello dear, nothing wrong, but the kids just wanted to say goodnight to you. They already called Izzie as well,” Helen said as they both let out a sigh of relief. “I wasn't sure if you two had already gone to bed for the night so I'm glad I reached you.”
“Yeah, Jo and I are just doing some… reading together,” Alex said as he struggled with his words and Jo lightly slapped his chest.
“Oh reading,” Helen said, seeing through his words. “I hope I'm not interrupting anything.”
“Well, are you going to put the kids on or not Mom?” Alex asked as he frowned.
Jo slapped his chest again and whispered to him. “Stop being rude to your mother!”
“Sorry Mom,” Alex said as Jo nodded and laid her head on his chest again.
“It’s okay honey, I was just teasing you,” Helen said with a laugh and he never thought that his mom would be joking about his sex life with his wife. “Anyway here's Luna, she's been dying to talk to you, hey Luna say hi to Mommy and Daddy.”
“Dada,” Luna's voice came through the phone as Alex put it on speaker so Jo could hear it as well.
“Hi, little Moon,” Jo said in a sweet voice as she perked up to speak to her daughter.
“Hi Mama,” Luna said, followed by a string of babble that was eligible to either of them.
“Oh, are you having a good time at Nana's house?” Jo cooed to her.
“Nana mama, nana baba,” Luna babbled again going on and on.
“That's great, Luna, are you settling for bed?” Alex asked her, he loved his baby girl's babble talk.
“Yes, we read lots of stories,” Helen interrupted. “Isn't that right, Luna?”
“Yeah,” Luna said in the cutest voice and Jo and Alex couldn't help but laugh.
“We love you Little Moon, good night,” Jo said, blowing her a kiss through the phone.
“Yes we love you, Luna good night,” Alex said, smiling as Jo laid her head on his chest.
“Ni-ni,” Luna said to them before making kissing noises and they could only assume was her kissing the phone as they laughed.
“Oh Luna, don't eat it,” Helen said with a little laugh as she quickly stole the phone back from Luna. “Just give me a second and I'll give you to Alexis and Eli.”
“Okay,” Alex said and soon enough they were talking with the twins.
“Hi Mama Jo, hi Daddy,” Alexis and Eli both sat at the same time, the twins were occasionally in sync that way.
“Hey you guys, did you have a good time?” Jo asked them.
“Yeah, Nana made us hot chocolate with marshmallows and we watched a whole movie! Now we're reading stories before we go to bed, but we wanted to say good night to you and give you kisses,” Alexis asked, making a kissing noise just like Luna had but further away.
“Oh that sounds like a really fun night,” Jo said with a happy sigh.
“It sounds like you guys got spoiled,” Alex said with a laugh as the twins giggled.
“Nana's the best,” Eli said with a laugh.
“Well I'm glad you guys are enjoying your sleepover,” Alex said with a smile.
The kids continued to talk about their night as he looked down at Jo only to find that her eyes were closed and she lightly snored on his chest. He was surprised that she had fallen asleep already, but he must have worn her out. Alex kissed her head with a smile as she continued to snore.
“Alright well you three should be getting to bed now Jo and I are headed to bed too,” Alex said adopting his dad voice that he had perfected over the past two years with the kids.
“Okay Daddy,” Alexis said with a sigh. “Good night, I love you.”
“Good night Daddy, Good night Mama Jo, I love you,” Eli said to them.
“Good night, we love you,” Alex said back to them.
“La La,” Luna added saying I love you in her own little way before he heard the smacking of her lips as she no doubt tried to blow them a kiss.
“Mama Jo, you gotta say goodnight to us,” Eli insisted with a tone of sadness.
“She’s already asleep buddy,” Alex said, in a soft tone.
“Oh okay, goodnight Mama Jo, I love you,” Eli whispered to her.
“Good night to you both,” Helen said as well.
“Thanks, Mom, and call me if anything,” Alex pressed her.
“Don't worry Alex,” Helen said with a reassuring tone. “The kids are alright and I promise I won't go crazy on them.”
“That's not what I'm worried about,” Alex assured her with a frown. “I just don't want one of them to get scared or have a nightmare and wake up with us not there.”
“I’ll call you if that happens and have you come right over, but it’ll be alright,” Helen said with a light tone and he finally believed her. “Good night my sweet boy.”
“Good night, Mom,” Alex said as they finally hung up.
He put the phone down and looked down at Jo who was still fast asleep, her lips slightly parted as she started to snore. He smiled at her and wrapped his arms around her. Then he closed his eyes, breathing in the scent of her shampoo as he finally drifted off.

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 15X15
I liked this episode for the most part. It wasn’t as strong as it could have been, but it was good. At the beginning of the episode we find out there’s been a fire at Catherine’s party and then are taken back in time to five hours earlier. Catherine throws shade and says she didn’t want a party. Says the woman who specifically asked for a party. She was a real jerk to Jackson and all of her family and friends this episode.
There was great fashion in this episode that I really enjoyed! The wardrobe department really outdid themselves. I loved Maggie’s green jumpsuit with the gold jewellery. It was stunning! Bailey and Catherine’s outfits were also amazing! Jo’s outfit is also gorgeous! I love the safety pin top with the pink jacket! I like Amelia’s outfit too. That grey silver blouse looks really nice on her. In the evacuation scene at the end there’s a woman in the background wearing slippers, a funky patterned hair towel, and a bathrobe with cats on it! It’s epic! Maggie’s purse, which we catch a glimpse of at the end, is Devine!
Jackson shows off his privilege when it’s revealed he’s so privileged he doesn’t even know how to make a candle stand up straight in its holder. There’s some great African Art in the background of Jackson’s place that I really love. Bailey had some great lines in this episode. Some of my favourites were, “You shoulda lead with limo!” and, “She’s your problem now.” I love Bailey. She and Catherine spend most of the episode enjoying themselves in Catherine’s limo and it’s amazing! More of this please! At Catherine’s encouragement Bailey buys her $799 blender with her golden butt cork money! Haha! Catherine confides her fears in Bailey and Bailey speaks the truth to Catherine! I love her!!! Also Bailey listing a robot attack as a possibility is my new favourite thing!
I hated pretty much everything surrounding Meredith and DeLuca dating. There were a few moments that were enjoyable to watch but most of it was just cringeworthy. We find out that Meredith and DeLuca are officially dating now. Yuck. She tells Alex and she looks a scared kid whose misbehaved. Spoiler Alert: If you feel or look that way when you tell your BEST FRIEND that you’re dating someone you should NOT be in that relationship.
Alex then calls Meredith on her BS about DeLuca. He thinks the fact that they’re dating is laughable. It is. Alex speaks for all of us here. But he’s still supportive of her as her friend and he hopes he makes her happy. Because Alex is a great best friend. I love their friendship. Helm is a true idiot in this episode. If more than one person has the same last name you include their first name as well. That’s just common sense. And Alex’s Mom Helen Karev appears! Welcome back!
We also find out that Betty has recovered and that her parents who suck are taking her and Leo to go and live with them. We never see a Social Worker or a judge or a lawyer in any of this. Super unrealistic. Betty’s parents continue to be insensitive jerks throughout the entire process. Also the man they cast to play Betty’s Dad has clearly never picked up a baby before. Jennifer Grey was phenomenal as Betty’s Mom, but the actor playing her Dad was poorly cast. Betty leaves without saying goodbye and it breaks Amelia’s heart. Back at the party we find out that Maggie’s nemesis KeKe wrote an article about her but made herself the star. That bitch. She’s the gift that keeps on giving. Alex shows up checks Jackson on his privilege and then goes to play some ping pong! I love him! Meredith and DeLuca arrive at the party. As they are standing in the hallway we find out that for once Meredith’s house is empty because her sisters and children are elsewhere. DeLuca then declares that he doesn’t want to go to a party in Catherine, Tom, and Amelia’s honour because Meredith’s house is empty and he wants to go back and have sex with her instead.
Remind me how I’m supposed to like this guy? He actively dislikes being around her family and friends and is super selfish all the time. Ugh. Amelia is Meredith’s Sister in Law. She’s there to support her. She’s also a friend of Catherine’s and Jackson’s. Richard is the only father figure she’s ever known. Her and Tom are on friendly terms. She’s going to this party to support them. She loves them. They are her family and DeLuca has no interest in being a part of that scene for some reason.
Tom and Teddy arrive at the party and are making out in the foyer just as an upset Amelia and Owen show up. Cue the drama. We find out that Tom surprised Teddy with a trip to Palm Springs before the baby comes. Which is really sweet! He really cares about her. Awww! Owen decides to be a jerk to everyone in response. While at the party we see Meredith talking to Ellis on the phone! She calls her Elle Belle! I love it! She’s such a loving Mom. She is nothing like her parents. I’m glad we’re learning more about Bailey and Ellis this season. We find out that Zola and Bailey are at a sleepover and Ellis is with her babysitter Tanya at her place and both Maggie and Amelia are at the party which is why her house is currently empty.
Amelia walks up to her and she tries to tell Amelia about her and DeLuca but doesn’t get the chance because Amelia’s upset about losing Betty and Leo and how Owen’s being a complete jerk. Meredith’s is supportive because she loves her. Next we see Teddy rightfully upset because of how awkward and difficult Owen is making everything. Tom comforts her and Jackson overhears him making a joke at exactly the wrong time and his reaction of, “Why?” is perfect and hilarious. Jo and Helen arrive and converse in the hallway with Alex. He tells Jo he didn’t see her calls because he was playing ping pong! While they’re talking Helen wanders into the party.
Owen continues being a jerk as Amelia attempts to talk to him on the balcony. He asks if she’s okay as if that’s normal. Why would Amelia be okay right now? She’s sad and angry. They both are. Amelia says some really important and truthful things and Owen completely doesn’t listen to or hear her. She calls him on his crap and it is fantastic! Yes! I am here for this! And Bokhee’s in the background! Hi Bokhee!
Owen continues to be selfish, makes everything about himself, and ignores what Amelia is saying. Why are they together? Then he completely gaslights her like an asshole. Run Amelia Run! Teddy and Maggie talk about the article and Teddy is very confused by Maggie’s response and it is hilarious! Teddy’s response to herself is, “I do hate this party.” Teddy is great. I love her. Meredith speaks the truth to Amelia about Teddy. However, I disagree that Amelia should have to make peace with it. She doesn’t have to make peace with the fact that the person she loves is in love with someone else. Neither did Cristina or Beth. Teddy shouldn’t have to put up with this either. She does have another option. She can step away which is what she eventually decides to do.
Alex and Jo finally find Helen talking to DeLuca on the balcony. She knitted them wedding present scarves! My heart is bursting! We then see more of Bokhee who is there with her husband Jay. I wonder if Jay is her husband in real life or an actor? Bokhee tells Jay in another language that based on his actions DeLuca is in love with Meredith. I think it’s interesting that the use of the word ‘love’ is always one sided from DeLuca’s end. He says it but she doesn’t. Other people say it about him but not her.
To me that indicates that he’s in love and infatuated with her but she’s just having fun dating him. That can only end in disaster. DeLuca doesn’t seem very concerned that his mentor isn’t doing well. He seems very self absorbed these days. Meredith does seem happy though which is nice. She’s been sad for a very long time. Owen, Jackson, and Richard have an “I hate Tom Koracick” club meeting by the food table. Jackson is so self absorbed he makes inflammatory comments about Tom which only eggs Owen, whose been drinking quite heavily, on further. Recognize the signs Jackson! Sheesh. Jackson says Tom took advantage of April during a vulnerable time. However, we the viewers know that Tom did not take advantage of April. Jackson believes that because he’s never asked her about it.
Richard’s pissed because Tom keeps making flirty comments to Catherine which is valid. But the party is partly in his honour so raging on him right now is in really bad taste. At this point Owen is super jealous of Tom and Amelia has totally figured that out. When he goes on about Tom to Amelia she defends him because they are friends and tells him that he was there for her after her tumour. Owen is further pissed off that Tom was there for Amelia after her tumour but Owen wasn’t there for her by choice. Even when Megan urged him he wouldn’t go. He has no one but himself to blame for the mess he’s gotten himself into.
He calls Amelia insecure and completely gaslights her again! The difference is that Amelia is now sober, clean, and sane. She can finally see Owen’s behaviour for what it is. Wrong. Amelia calls out on this and reminds him that she encouraged him to go to Germany and that was only 7 months ago not 7 years like Owen seems to be pretending. Now he’s acting like she’s crazy for speaking the truth. What were hearing from Amelia is wisdom not insecurity.
She tells them she’s done and that they’re done. You go Amelia! You do you! This is Amelia at her best. It’s been a long time coming. She deserves stability and happiness and she’s not going to get it with Owen. I hope her and Link get together. After Amelia says this and leaves Owen acts all offended as she doesn’t have the right to leave him. What an asshole. Aw Jo and Alex are wearing  the scarves Helen made them! I hope Meredith gets a scarf. Alex and Jo are worried his Mom might be able to split from reality. His line, “She shouldn’t have needles,” is the best. It’s not funny but it is. We cut to a scene with Meredith and DeLuca making out in Jackson’s guest bedroom. Yuck. I hate this scene. She’s setting boundaries and he’s pushing them. No does not mean convince her which is what he’s trying to do.
DeLuca gets a call from Carina, but ignores it. If Carina’s calling this late from Italy he should answer it. It’s probably important. Be an adult not a horny teenager DeLuca. And then Richard walks in on them! Why does this always happen to Richard? Meredith and Derek. Maggie and DeLuca. Now Meredith and DeLuca. He has the worst luck. As the saying goes, “If a relationship has to be a secret you shouldn’t be in it.” Meredith looks like a kid whose been caught doing something she shouldn’t like she did when she told Alex.
She tells Richard that Alex knows as if that makes a difference. She’s making excuses. If you have to do that and you’re this embarrassed you shouldn’t be dating that person. She does seem happy though which is good. They leave and go back to the party. DeLuca for some reason thinks it’s weird that Meredith is flustered. Why does DeLuca think it’s weird that Meredith is flustered after what just happened? His reactions make no sense.
Also why didn’t the staff take the spring rolls back out of the oven? That’s what they are paid to do. Maggie is still pissed about the article so Webber gives her some Webber Wisdom on taking her anger and making it productive. Then Alex’s Mom smells the fire but Alex thinks it’s in her head. Now we’re back to Owen and Teddy. He’s pissed that she’s taking this vacation and tries to make it about her putting the baby in danger. She points out in response that they have hospitals in California too.
Not only do they have hospitals in California, but Megan, Nathan, and Addison live there. Addison’s is one of the foremost neonatal surgeons in the country. If Teddy went into labour in California. She would have excellent care. He’s way out of line here. She wants to take a nice vacation like a normal person. He doesn’t get a say in this. Then he calls Tom a dirt bag even though he doesn’t know him at all.
Tom comes over and he and Owen start to argue. Catherine and Bailey finally arrive at the party and Jackson chooses this moment to be an oblivious ass to both Alex and Helen and Teddy, Tom, and Owen. Tom calls Owen on the fact that he’s done nothing to get to know him even though Tom and Teddy have been dating for several months now. Owen completely ignores this fact and starts yelling at Tom as if he knows anything about him.
This culminates in Owen telling Tom he’s not a father when he knows absolutely nothing about him in a room full of people at a party in his honour. Wow. Just when you thought Owen could not be more of an asshole he is! Tom’s finally had enough at that last comment and punches him hard. I don’t condone violence but I understand why Tom punched him. I think I would’ve too in that situation. He is a father. He lost a child. He’s not preying on Teddy. He will be in their baby’s life. Those are the facts and Owen is being an unforgivable asshole here.
To which Amelia responds from afar, “Okay. I’m done.” Yes Amelia. You go! You deserve better. And so does Teddy godammnit! Alex, Jo, and Helen are leaving just as Helen spots the smoke and points to the very real fire. Alex is so excited his Mom is right and she’s not hallucinating. I love him! His smiling face as they evacuate is the best! After the building’s been evacuate we find out from Ben that DeLuca and Meredith started an almost fire in Jackson’s oven with those damn egg rolls! Hahaha! Turns out the tray was plastic not metal.
The party breaks up after that and Alex comes over and introduces him Mom and Meredith to each other. It’s a beautiful and so well done. I think it’s interesting how DeLuca is framed out of the shot. They keep emphasizing how DeLuca doesn’t want to be a part of Meredith’s family or group of friends. But she does seem happy though for the time being so that’s good.
Maggie’s still has her glass of wine! We get some hot and sexy banter from Ben and Bailey! Catherine apologizes to Jackson by having the two of them and Richard and Maggie go get trashy foot and eat it in her limousine as they drive around town to celebrate. Catherine takes Maggie’s side on the KeKe/article issue and it’s awesome. They decide to spend the time after each of her scans, good or bad, like this. It’s very sweet.
Owen returns home to find that Amelia’s there because Betty’s parents brought Leo back! They decide at Betty’s request to give Leo back to Owen permanently so that they can help Betty stay sober, recover, and heal. Betty tells Amelia she wants to be a real teenager and make normal mistakes. She says goodbye to Amelia and hugs Owen, Amelia, and Leo one last time and then leaves with her parents.
Then we cut to Jo and Alex’s loft and he’s set his Mom up on the couch for the night. They’re still worried about her. Awww and there’s a picture of Meredith marrying Alex and Jo on their nightstand! We cut from there to a scene of Meredith and DeLuca arriving at his house. Carina pulls up in a car and she and DeLuca start arguing in Italian. This is why he should have picked up her calls. This is not the fun time Meredith came for.
Oh and it’s DeLuca’s Dad! This is why he should have picked up Carina’s calls! As Meredith says, “The bad times are going to find you all on their own ...” Now let’s take a look at next week’s promo. Oh it looks like they’re developing Jackson and Link’s friendship! Cool! It also looks like we’re getting some good jolex scenes and we get to see more of Alex’s Mom! It also appears that Amelia does in fact call it quits with Owen and call him on his BS! Yes! Finally!
Until next time.
Au revoir!
