The Value Of A Line, Heather Hansen

While I was researching I came across interdisciplinary artist Heather Hansen. She is a contemporary performance artist and a professional dancer. What I enjoy about her work is that her whole body is involved in the piece. She is not only creating a physical mark on a blank surface, but she is also asserting her physical presence to the viewer by performing. I would like to learn more about her process as I move forward with the theme of dance and body language. I think an art form like this would inform all of my electives. In ceramics the patterns and shapes made can be used as designs on plates and cups or turned into more sculptural pieces, in photography I could document the process of making the marks or simply investigate the marks by zooming in on certain points and distort them, and in animation I could depict an array of repetitive movements of the body through stop motion.

In my research for artists that work with movement, I was surprised to find so many artists who actually incorporated movement into the process. These artists completely immerse themselves in their work by using their whole bodies when creating. By taking this unique approach it's not just the finished piece that is the art but the process itself. The movements they make while creating are beautiful to watch and they will often record themselves while making it. Using movement in the process also makes the art much more fluid, expressive and spontaneous. I would really like to try out some of their methods of moving in my own creative process.
