Since I came to Tumblr I've been starting to follow a lot of furry artists and I thought to myself "damn tumblr made me a furry" but then I remembered about the Ring of Gyges
Gyges's ring has no special power over the wearer. The ring doesn't corrupt Gyges; it reveals what he was all along: someone who only ever restrained himself out of fear of punishment

Icelandic RING OF GYGES Release New Single + Lyric Video 'Nautilus'
Icelandic Progressive rockers RING OF GYGES have released the second single/video “Nautilus” from their forthcoming album “Metamorphosis” which will be released via ViciSolum Productions on May19. Helgi Jónsson (vocalist and guitarist) about the single/video:“Nautilus is perhaps the heaviest song we’ve written, but it’s also one of the most progressive. There isn’t a single measure of 4/4 rhythm…

Learning about the Ring of Gyges story is so weird because it influenced the creation of Lord of the Rings. But besides the golden ring that makes you invisible, that's where the similarities end.
The Ring of Gyges makes the wearer show their true colors because of the anonymity the ring gives them. It was to show that Justice is self serving and that we all act morally in front of society because of the social pressure to act morally. The One Ring doesn't represent that.
The One Ring doesn't temp people because of the lack of accountability it can give, but rather the vague promise of power. The One Ring tempts people so it can find its way back to Sauron. Its invisibility isn't a perk, it's a way for Ring Wraiths to see the wearer in the unseen world.
If there's any big modern story that best approximates the lesson in The Ring of Gyges, it's Death Note. Light immediately professes to be the god of the new world after his first kill. Light killed innocent people to keep his anonymity. Not to mention how Frodo is a Chosen one character, he was meant to have the ring and to cast it in the fires of Mount Doom. But the shepherd in the Ring of Gyges wasn't chosen. He found the ring on happenstance when he fell from a hole. It could have happened to anyone. Much like how Light found the Death Note. Ryuk even tells him that he wasn't chosen and that humans are funny for thinking everything is fated.
Anyone could have had the Ring of Gyges. Anyone could have had the Death Note.

Trinkets, Rings, 5: Enough rings and bands to wear three on every finger and toe while still having dozens to spare. Rings, especially magic rings are a very common item of jewelry in fiction and roleplaying. From a basic ring of protection, to the life saving ring of regeneration, the ring of the Nibelungs, the rings of the lantern corps, the ring of Gyges, any wedding ring ever depicted, the ring of Solomon, Sir Perceval’s ring, Aladdin’s genie housing ring, the nine rings of mortal men and the precious one ring of power, these small circular pieces of gems, metal, wood or bone always add more to the story than the sum of their parts. None of these rings are intensely magical in their own right but can serve as basis for a magical or plot relevant ring. When a DM rolls a d100, the bog standard ring of protection +1 they were going to give out now has a unique look and personality rather than just a mechanical benefit.
A ring that resembles the scales of justice bent in a circle. When worn it tends the focus the wielder’s judgment into a stark sense of good and evil.
A wide ring whose metal is streaked with a rainbow pattern that shimmers and shifts around constantly.
A simple silver ring that is set, not with a gem, but a bright white sphere of arcane force.
A finger-ring of translucent, deep green jade, carved to resemble a twisting vine of ivy.
A platinum finger-ring of a winged serpent devouring its own tail.
A set of four ivory finger-rings, the bands inlaid with a continuous mosaic of emerald, ruby and sapphire.
A tungsten ring painstakingly crafted to look like a centipede curled around the finger.
A jade signet ring depicting a raven with an arrow through its neck. Any dwarf who sees the emblem will develop an intense migraine for as long as they observe it.
A gaudy golden ring topped with an obviously fake ruby. The faint, ghost‐like face of a middle aged gnome floats in the ring’s phony jewel. He is smiling, but when he notices someone is looking at him, he winks!
Ring of Unspeakable Power: A small golden ring with a beautiful gem set in IT, it is a good looking ring, and IS definitely not CURSED, and whoever is wearing has no need to TAKE IT OFF. What silly person would think a ring could DO SOMETHING like that? It’s not like IT HAS any POWER THAT IS CORRUPTING YOU or anything, and though your friends are crying and begging for you to TAKE IT OFF RIGHT NOW, they probably just want to wear it themselves. After all, who wouldn’t? It is a very nice looking ring, after all. Anyone who isn’t wearing the ring believes it is cursed and a dangerously corrupting force that is causing the wearer to become evil, and anyone who wears it believes it’s just a nice looking ring, and the people telling them to take it off are just jealous. It was created by an enchantress with a love for practical jokes. The ring does not compel people to act against their alignment nor does it actually impose any sort of actual detriment, although it does detect as an evil, unhallowed and cursed object for curse detecting and breaking abilities and spells.

—Note: The previous 10 items are repeated for easier rolling on a d100.

A ring of brambles with a sphere of jade carved into the shape of a viper's head set in its center
A Randomly Coloured ceramic ring that when worn, changes the colour of the bearer’s eyes to match that colour.
A venerable stone ring engraved with Primordial runes.
A golden ring emblazoned with a sun-like jewel.
A ring whose setting is a deep milky onyx. Staring into the gem gives a feeling of awe due to the similarity to the night sky.
A ring embedded with four small gemstones, each with their own special gleam that helps to calm the bearer. The gems are a breathtaking ruby, deep blue sapphire, a crystalline citrine and an earthen quartz
A simplistic rose gold ring that looks beautiful and makes the bearer feel all warm and fuzzy inside. While wearing this ring, the bearer is unable to think that is anything is negative and puts a positive spin on everything they do.
A breathtaking ring with bands of platinum and amber swirling around the silver base.
A ring made from a multitude of insect carapaces, each with varying hues and textures.
A ring quite strange in its make. It appears to be a wooden band with a square piece of glass for a setting. Nonetheless, it is still a beautiful looking piece of jewellery.
A ring made of an oily dark metal covered in many rubies that seem to glint like the eyes of dozens of small predators.
A wax sealing ring bearing the insignia of a long dead thief.
A heavy signet ring of bloodstone bearing the crest of a recent usurper of the kingdom.
A food taster's ring, heavy bronze sporting a bezel made from an arc sliced from an alicorn.
An emerald finger ring with silky inclusions, set with rows of seed pearls and golden granulation.
A ring consisting of a band of gold set with an impressive tiger-eye.

A white jade ring, carved to depict tiger kittens at play.
A quartz ring carved to depict a flight of swallows.
A rings crafted from an alloy of adamantine and copper set with a black opal.
A plain brass ring of minimum value. Designed to draw as little attention as possible, the band’s only adornment is a tiny relief carving of a lightning blasted tree stump and the words “Even the mighty are destined to fall” engraved upon the ring’s surface.
A steel ring that has been heat-colored to portray flames along the length of the ring.
A silver band with an inlaid deep blue sapphire, surrounded by small, engraved runes.
A ring consisting of three intertwined bands of copper, silver, and iron.
A simple charm ring made from bone, carved to resemble a lizard set with hematite eyes biting its own tail.
A ring that appears to be made of ivory, but actually has a fleshy texture. It is warm to the touch and slowly pulses as if it possesses a heartbeat.
An iron ring etched with silver runes. When first donned, the hand on which the ring is placed tingles, as if being lightly shocked.
A ring crafted to resemble a falcon, head cocked to the side and wings outstretched around the finger. The eye is set with a blue diamond.
A ring made of woven bands of silver with a milky white opal affixed to it.
A gem with the emblem of a divine light etched into it is cradled in a golden ring, crafted with utmost love and attention. It seems to radiate a divine heat to it, making it warm to the touch. Knowledgeable PC’s know that those who typically wear such rings are devoted to the holy cause of The Church of the Silver Flame
A ring of mottled green and brown stone that always appears to be wet.
A thick granite ring set with a jacinth of inestimable beauty.
A ring composed of three separate bands; two emerald bands, and one glass band which contains a small amount of quicksilver that can be seen sloshing around within the glass band.
A glass ring decorated with fairy wings made of amber.
A jade ring inscribed with the name of a green dragon.
A large tarnished ring with an embedded compass.
A ring of twine that twists and winds when worn, digging into flesh.
An iron ring set with two wolf heads, one bulbous and one withered.

An iron signet ring of a vanished monarchy.
A plain brass ring of exquisite craftsmanship.
A thin platinum ring set with a perfect moonstone.
A large and finely wrought middle ring of unusual workmanship.
An elegant electrum ring with a clear blue crystal set into its center. Its shanks and gallery are fashioned to resemble gusts of wind.
An adamantine ring with a distinctive signet that is clearly recognizable as those worn by the sworn members of the Paladins of the Adamite Tower. These unique bands are made through an intense trial and are impossible to counterfeit. Wearing this under false pretenses gains the wearer the enmity of the Paladins. Otherwise, it signifies to anyone that the bearer is part of the well respected and widely liked paladin order and would impact a significant level of prestige and respect to the wielder and his companions.
A ring crafted of iron and brass and set with four gems. A pentagram is inscribed on its face, along with runes that are said to spell out the true name of the Lord of Hosts.
An ancient ring, cut and polished from a single agate, is engraved with the petroglyphs for "GOOD JOB."
A small Tabasheer toe ring.
A thin gold ring delicately engraved with sigils of loves. When gently caressed, the bearer begins spontaneously weeping.
An electrum ring with an opal that seems to harmonize with music being played or performed nearby.
A ring made of white metal with a name in Auran inscribed on the inside.
An antiqued ring with a protruding spike made of a demon’s claw.
A ring with a gilded band mounted with a cluster of lapis lazuli.
A gear-shaped ring made of an unknown but durable material.
A thick gold ring with inset obsidian cut to depict a soldier’s helmet.
A large gold ring with an opal gem in a clawed setting.
A signet ring, bearing the crest of a well-known noble family from a couple of provinces away.

A thin silver ring with a round centre stone that you can change the colour of by rotating the ring around your finger once.
A silver ring engraved with roses.
A gold engagement ring with the center stone missing.
A ring carved from black volcanic rock with small rubies all along its outside. It is warm to the touch and sparkles more than usual when reflecting firelight.
A ring of gold and silver twirled together, with a single large sapphire set in the centre.
A blue-gray metal ring bearing an engraved snowflake is cold to the touch.
A ring whose band of beaten copper sports a hint of green oxidation that marks it as unremarkable.
A dented gold ring, covered in scratches and blemishes. When someone tries to put it around their finger, the ring shrinks so that it cannot fit.
A bejeweled golden ring, with emeralds, sapphires and rubies set into the band. Concentrating on the ring causes the gems to glow brilliantly.
A simple steel ring inscribed with the phrase "Victory or Death" in runic script.
A brass signet ring bearing the sigil of a noble house that fell into exile a generation ago. The crest has nearly been scratched off.
A gold ring with script along the outside in a strange language.
Ring of Boundless Visions: A silver ring bearing a repeating pattern of open eyes along the inner and outer bands. When the bearer of this ring sleeps, deeply realistic and uncontrollable visions come upon them. The visions feel as if they are actually taking place, and the bearer is likely to react as if they were truly experiencing the events, interacting with nearby objects as if they were the items witnessed in the visions. Often, the bearer's visions will be nonsensical, containing impossible events, or confluences of recent events with fanciful imaginings. Sometimes, however, exact repeats of recent events will occur, or the vision will eerily resemble events of the near future. However, upon waking, the bearer will remember very little of the vision, if at all.
A tarnished ring bearing the signet of deposed royalty.
A handsome men’s ring plated in lustrous gold with silver-toned accents. The face of the ring features a rich onyx centre stone set with a grid of four diamonds. A key pattern, symbolizing unity and the eternal flow of life, borders the face of the ring. For a perfect finishing touch, an additional diamond adorns each side of the ring, for a total of six radiant stones.
An exceptional ring that features three proud lions plated in gold, standing out from their bold and regal blue hand-enamelled background. This band is also plated in gold and each of the shoulders is set with an ice-white diamond.
A slim silvery ring with a shiny, well cut, emerald set into it.
An intricately-carved, but otherwise plain red-gold ring.
A plain iron ring set with three small rubies. When held in total darkness, the rubies glow like faint embers.
A dark iron ring set with a piece of amethyst that never quite seems to be well-lit, even in direct sunlight. Tendrils of smoke and darkness seem to twirl in the crevices of this crude stone.
An ancestral ring, set with a gem of deep, sanguine claret. Knowledgeable PC’s can recognize the heraldry of the Von Carsteins along the band, a noble house infamous for possessing the dark gift of everlasting undeath.
A thick ring of oathgold, created using words of fury once spoken by Grimnir himself.
A band smelted from a fallen star found on the snowy steppes, the metal of this ring is dark and cold.
An ivory ring set with a mauve stone of this ring that flashes and sends a delicious tingle to the wearer's very core in the presence of hostile magics.
A small silver ring, with a ruby gripped between two silver claws that grow out of the band.
A ring made of cold steel with several sharp barbs protruding from it. It is crafted in the shape of a monstrous spiked eel whose mouth can open and close.
A ring of golden oak engraved with the image of a tree with nine branches.
A silver and copper wire ring set with a large cracked and dimpled opal. In sunlight, the opal slowly shrinks, the setting shrinking with it; in moonlight, it expands.
A thick copper ring studded with tiny mageglass daggers, the sharp facets stained red.
A thick ring made of smoothly polished granite and topped with an ironoak relief of the watchful moon at its zenith over a berry bush. It smells of crushed raspberries.
A gold ring with a thin band engraved with arcane symbols. It is set with a large and flawless ruby that glows with a faint red light. The gemstone is cut in a hexagonal shape and set in a complex metal framework that resembles a cage. The ring radiates a subtle aura of magic and intelligence.

Okay okay so, first hi hello how're you? I hope you're doing well. Second, I'm rewatching doctor strange and I had a thought
So for majority of it, he struggles with his hands obv and it makes me think. How would he react to an s/o with carpal tunnel and arthritis?
Every once in a while my finger will dislocate and I'm just oh okay and put it back. And when my carpal tunnel acts up It'll hurt a lot to hold anything remotely heavy
I can also repeatedly pop my wrist cause its funny to see my mom get grossed out. (In reality I'm just dislocating and relocating multiple times over and over lmao)
Pairing: Dr. Strange x Reader Rating || Genres || Warnings: T. Romance. If you're not comfortable with what has been requested, please do not proceed. A/N: I actually laughed out loud when I read your request. And I hope I got the aspect of it right! I hope you enjoy it!

"Well this is just fantastic isn't it?" You grumbled as you found your arms being tied behind your back by a magic-user thief attempting to.....well rob the New York Sanctum.
"Shut up." The man said. At least he sounded like a man, judging by the deepness of his voice. He wore a black ski-mask to hide his identity, so it could be a woman. The physique didn't really give anything away. Or he could be wearing a disguise. Or she.
Argh! Your mind was still a little slow since you hadn't had your coffee.
You still couldn't figure out how the thief had managed to sneak in despite the magic wards. Not to mention he(you decided it was a he) had managed to jump you. Then again, you had walked into the Sanctum kitchen half asleep and still groggy from waking up. From what you could detect, he wasn't a very strong magic user, so incapacitating him would be easy.
But you were wide awake now, slightly pissed off, and cranky as well. Not to mention the bruise to your ego at being caught unawares. So you would play it out.
And enjoy every second of it.
Well you were going to, if Stephen hadn't portaled in at that very moment.
"Welcome home, Honey." You called in a mocking voice, just as the thief turned to press the blade of a knife to your throat.
Huh, where did the knife come from?
Stephan froze up, though the expression on his face was one of pure fury as he glared at the would-be thief. Magic fizzled at the tips of his fingers. "You come any closer-" The thief let the threat hand his voice cold.
"What do you want?" Stephen asked, getting to the business part as usual.
"The Ring of Gyges." You frowned in confusion. That ring was at the London Sanctum.
"Ha! You're at the wrong Sanctum then, buddy." You couldn't help yourself as you let out the laugh, prompting both the thief and Stephen to glance at you.
"Y/n." Stephen called your name in a warning tone, knowing how much you loved to goad the enemy with your banter to draw their attention away from the prime target.
The thief glared at you. "My sources say its here." He insisted. "Well your sources are wrong." You said in a mocking tone. That seemed to tick him off, as he raised a fist and moved to punch you.
But you were much much quicker.
With a twist of your wrist, you managed to dislocate it, allowing the ropes to loosen. And with your other hand, you caught his fist. You grinned at his perplexed expression, raising your dislocated wrist, and watching in amusement at the horrifying look that morphed over his features as he stumbled back.
"Maybe next time, make sure your captives are properly incapacitated." You said. With a flick, your bones were back in place and you threw your leg out with all your might. Catching the thief across the stomach you watched as he went flying, crashing into a nearby table. He seemed to hit his head as he went since he instantly passed out.
Rolling your wrist to make sure it was alright, you turned your attention back to Stephen, who was looking at you with an amused look on his face, a smile barely concealed.
"I still find it amazing how callously you do that." He nodded towards your hand, to which you shrugged. "I've gotten used to it. Though he caught me on one of my good days. If he had tried to take me captive a couple days ago, I wouldn't have been able to do much." You admitted, thinking how your carpel tunnel had been acting up and even lifting a book had been difficult.
It didn't help that most books in the Sanctum weighed a ton.
Walking towards you, he took your hand in his. You watched as his scarred and trembling hands brushed against your palm and fingers. Allowing your eyes to meet his, you gave him a small smile. "We make quite the pair don't we?" You asked, referring to the state of his hands and your own issues with arthritis and carpel tunnel. He sighed before nodding, lifting one of your hands to press a kiss to the inside of your wrist, the one you had dislocated a few moments ago.
You smiled at his brief show of affection before turning to where the thief had begun to stir.
"I'm gonna put some coffee on. We're both gonna need it while we interrogate him." You stated before kissing his cheek quickly and strode off to the kitchen.

fluffy-ish gunter/corrin fic excerpt i'm exceptionally endeared to, and i think you all will like as well ~ post-possession, pre-final-anankos fight. gunter just had to debrief the royals on some of more personal anankos memories.
unedited
-
“Do you want company, sir?”
Corrin would never voice these worries to the dusty air, but his hands were shaking badly again.
“Please.”
The quiet answering rasp almost broke her heart in that stone-still moment, and so gently, she moved to daintily sit next to him on that half-broken stone wall. Equally as gently, she laid her head on his armoured bicep.
“Do you know why I don't drink, Corrin?” It was in a tone of a man confessing, and so she stayed silent, eyelids closed and savouring the warmth of his muscled body. She thought she felt the faintest rasp of a strained, self loathing chuckle between those clasped black gauntlets. “I would have been in oblivion the entire time, my love. Twenty years at this point, and then some at the bottom of a bottle with my despair. Krakenburg, as you know now, would have doubtlessly taken advantage of that weakness.”
The last line, she almost thought she did not hear at all.
“I never forgot. Not for one day.”
Heartbeats stretched.
It was many moments later before he shifted again, wearily rubbing fingers one last time through his lined face.
Very slowly, he stretched, exaggeratedly, and slipped off of the stone wall as surely as he shed off the weariness and into a newer mask. The transformation did not take long; he turned, and one moment he wore the weight of the world on his shoulders, and in the next he wore a lightly amused expression she recognized as her old lecturer, teacher, and mentor.
She had never noticed how slinky her old man was. She had, however, realised with a new appreciation how artless of an actor he was. There was a sinewy grace about it that kept her watching. For the heavy black-armoured plates he preferred, he always moved with a dancer’s taunt precision. One of his hands flexed with a catlike stretch before he laid it against the stone wall.
A lone gauntleted claw of his began to sketch out a crude layout of the castle against the stone. Spindly light white lines began to lace each other as he scratched at the rough texture, and he drew the throne room that she was far too familiar with, and then a spider-webbed series of tunnels radiating outwards.
“Castle Gyges has many tunnels. You are familiar with some of them but it is with luck we have several routes to the surface.” The design was quickly taking on a complexity far beyond what she could keep track of. “Essentially, two main routes to take.”
“How do you know all of...”
At her words, Gunter gave a crooked, sly glance back down; too haunted to be called a true smile, and with his raised eyebrow framed by the shadows—the answer hit her like a bolt of lightning smiting down from the heavens. Corrin suddenly felt foolish, afraid that it would send her lover back to much darker memories from when he was under the thrall of the silent dragon.
“Oh.”
“Indeed.” He nodded back at the pictograph, thankfully too morbidly amused to care about her unintentional tactlessness. Gunter continued lightly in the odd intimate moment. “You might even say possession has its uses. Now, pay attention my dear. This inside ramp that you all took is likely to be structurally unsafe by now, with multiple levels prone to collapsing.” One of his armoured digits traced a line just inside the throne room, a spindly scratch ringing the room itself.
He was far too attractive like this, with his other gauntleted hand bracketing his other hip. The worst part, she decided then and there, was the smug little swagger with his legs crossed.
“There is, however—” And this time he tapped at another line slightly further away from the innermost rectangular room. “—a little known tunnel that is a path straight to the surface and far less likely to collapse on us midway and send us to an earlier grave." He chuckled darkly, glancing back at her with an odd fondness. “It will take longer, and there are traps—mine of course—but I'll show you where and how we can disable those.”
Oh he was pleased, Corrin’s stomach gave a little wobble-flop upon hearing his husky purr laced with pride, and it was her turn to try very hard to resist a blink or any kind of reaction.
He had been planning this betrayal for much longer than anyone had ever assumed, and she did not know how she would have responded to that knowledge, days ago. In the end, after a small huff, Corrin did not know what it said about herself that she didn't care, now. Only that they all arrived back with no more lives lost.
“You’re recommending the longer path, sir.” Murmuring with her chin across her arms, and knees tucked in, she swayed on the stone wall as she watched up at him back.
Gunter nodded with a professor’s approval. “There is also the element of surprise. Anankos is expecting you to be frightened, to opt for the quickest, easiest route.”
And for you to not give us help. Corrin thought.
The walls suddenly rumbled again, severe enough that pebbles clattered and echoed worryingly along the stone floor that stretched into the dark gloom beyond.
Gunter straightened, bracing himself off the stone and shedding yet another mask from that warmly suave lecturer she was intimately endeared to and back into the distantly cold knight, yet one who was a black-armoured protector. Now, she could only see the creased worry in the lines of his eyes adding to the bags under his eyes.
He stared upwards with a calculating look, restless gaze searching for any additional sounds or clues. The endless stone seemed even heavier and more threatening than usual, pressing down ominously.
“We need to get out of here now, milady. The quicker, the better. I would not trust this place past an hour… his power is growing again, even with Azura’s mitigations.”
Corrin nodded, reluctantly pushing off of the stone wall, and lingered by his side.
“… thank you.”
It was not the right words, could never capture all the tender, complicated nuances striving in her heart towards her lover. Instead, she buried her face in the crook of his arm, that unarmored tenderness of his muscles where she could feel his warmth against the dark cloth and leather, and savoured his masculine scent.
I missed you, so much.
A gauntleted hand closed around the back of her hair, and slowly stroked the strands back as he had always done since she was a child.

what's your take on platos ring of gyges?
Oh man fuck Plato all my gurlies hate plato.
The only thing I will grant him is he is completely justified in wanting to be handled so roughly by a strong woman; but otherwise fuck plato.
I think that the Ring of Gyges is a very good thought experiment!! but fuckin, like ok Plato uses this to set up one of two opposing arguments that he then folds into his shitass plan for an ideal society.
If I remember correctly, Plato's version is slightly different from the traditional telling of the story, but I feel like it just feeds into his view of intention and ordering of the spirit as being preeminent.
Ok, I'm getting my copy of the Republic I want to give an answer correctly b/c I know Plato disagrees with uhhh was it Thamystocles or something over how to interpret it.
Okay, so I am inclined to agree with Glaucon's view (he's the one who's telling the story to Socrates, Plato's super mega ultra smart self insert) where in the absence of any consequence, people will do what makes them happy, or what they want to do.
It might be because I've read Leviathan and have been tainted by the evil that is the modern field of Political Science, but I think that morals and laws and what have you don't come from some metaphysical place! It's just people agreeing to do things or not do things because they want to (it makes them happy) or they are being coerced not to (they don't want to be stopped from living a free life).
I am further willing to say that anonymity and the internet gives us something akin to the ring of gyges, and we can see the full breadth of individuals on it and how they interact with the invisibility of the ring!
Plato then proceeds to spend the rest of the book dicking around and dodging the question in an increasingly elaborate way before answering the different question "is the life of an unjust man worse than the life of a just man".
Anyway, yeah I think J R R Tolkein did the right thing in condemning the thing to Mount Doom.

What’s the point of trying if it just proves that I’ll never be good enough? Ezekiel and Jenkins
set before the last scene of the season 2 finale Ezekiel  grinned to himself, relocking the door behind him. The Library's security was fine, if it wanted to keep you out. He'd had to argue with it--quietly, when no one was around to hear-- for something of a challenge, since it kept inviting him in.  Breaking into the vault that housed the really cursed stuff--an emerald the size of his head, a black diamond from some island that absolutely didn't exist anymore, the original ring of Gyges-- was exactly the kind of relaxing afternoon he needed to distract himself. It had been three weeks since the trip to England, three weeks of trying to find anything that would keep him from climbing the walls in his need to fix something everyone kept saying couldn’t be fixed.  Well, maybe they were right. The time machine was shattered, and piecing it back together wouldn’t fix the magic that had powered it. Anything was better, though, than moping. So, the Gem vault. It wasn’t like there was anyone to scold him for it. That done, it was off back through the Annex to see if the Clippings book had literally anything of interest, maybe swipe one of Stone's chocolate bars just to remind him not to get complacent, bother Jenkins...
He drew up short at the sight of Jenkins's desk. It was gleaming, newly polished, and empty.  Ezekiel hustled forward, poking at the air above the desk, running his hands over the sides. There had to be something going on, something invisible, a secret compartment the old guy was finally deciding to use...
"If you want the desk, I'd say you're in a place to...what do they kids call it? Dabs it?"
"Uh, Dibs, Jenkins. Dabbing is... you know." With a furtive glance over his shoulder to be certain that neither Cassandra nor Stone was watching, Ezekiel moved his arms.
"Ah. The traditional greeting amongst the druids, of course," Jenkins said. "Now, I.."
"You what. Have to go somewhere? You?" Ezekiel tried, and failed, to hold back the laugh--no, the chortle.  "You don't go places. Explain about the druids thing?"
"Well perhaps I should." He did not elaborate. “ Go places,” he said after a long moment.
"Yoooouuuu don't mean you're leaving the library?"
"That is what I said," Jenkins sighed. "Perhaps you need your hearing checked?"
"You. Leaving the Library, though?" Ezekiel frowned. "Why?"
"Perhaps because I am bored."
"Pfft, you don't get bored."
"Perhaps I need a vacation," he said.
"While we're still .." Ezekiel stopped himself, and then continued anyways. "Still short staffed?"
"Mr. Jones, the point?"
"I just... there has to be something else we could try."
"Try?" Jenkins said, drawing himself up to his full height. "Try? What's the point of trying if it just proves it'll never be enough?"
Ezekiel took a careful step back. "Jenkins..."
"Don't, Mr. Jones. Just... don't. I'm not someone who needs to be coddled.  Do you know what these last few weeks have been like for me? Trapped within my own mind, and then..."
"I mean, yeah." Ezekiel said. "The spell got all of us, so..."
"You're mortal. It's to be expected, for you. Not for me. I'm meant to be above that. There's a reason I try not to get involved, and now that I have, I need to go."
"So you're running away."
"I am not running away," Jenkins snapped. "Do you have any idea, any idea at all, what this is like? I couldn't help Mr. Carsen or the Colonel.  I couldn't stop my father from betraying our family, I couldn't save Aur--"
"Enough," Ezekiel said. "Do you think you're the only one who's watched his friends die? Over and over? No matter what you do? Because you're not. And running away from it... it doesn't help. Trust me. Lying to yourself won't bring them back."
"Surprisingly emotionally intelligent of you," Jenkins said quietly.  "But when..."
"I lied. To Eve, to Cass, about the time loop." Ezekiel  shrugged, looking at the card catalog built into the steps instead of at Jenkin's face. "It was easier if they didn't know.  Every time I told them they kept looking at me, and I didn't want them to look at me like that. Like I needed..."
"To be coddled." Jenkins sighed.
"Sure, I guess. Anyways, playing like I didn't know ... that was for them. They don't have to try to fill in the blanks. But it didn't help me. Running away, it won't help you, either. So....Stay. We don't have a Guardian. We need you."
"I'm no guardian." Jenkins said. "but I'll...think about it. That's all I can promise."
"Good enough for me. Oh and, uh... you won't tell them, right? Stone and Cassandra?"
"I'll take your secret to my grave," Jenkins said.
"Great, that--hey."
Jenkins gave him back his own annoying grin, though it faltered. Ezekiel  knew how he felt.

Asinhell will perform live for their first concert at Naestved Metalfest 2024
Tumblr media
"Michael Poulsen (Volbeat, Asinhell) states, "The first time I stood and played death metal in Musikstalden in Næstved was in 1991. 33 years later, it has now become time again to find the death metal axe and be part of Næstved Metalfest with a new band, Asinhell. I'm looking forward to sharing horn and the love for metal with you all and my good old friend and arranger Michael Hvolgaard Andersen with whom I did my very first interview at home from the boys' room. See you out there and let the metal flow." "

Reading about the Ring of Gyges (Politeia, by Plato) is such an odd experience, because it feels so easily applicable to today's day and age. The Ring allows Gyges to become invisible and do however he pleases. Our usernames allow us this anonymity as well. Difference is that Gyges was the only one with this ring, while the internet is something that so many people have, allowing them to be cruel with a group, only making the anonymity greater.
The internet is to us what the Ring was to Gyges. We wear a mask of impenetrability that hides our own vulnerability, and while we keep the name of Jekyll, we indulge in the life of Hyde.
