Sunqua Peak: A Stab In The Dark

Skip this if you’re avoiding fractal spoilers or what have you

The story of Sunqua Peak is a little bit hard to fit together because you have to pick up a bunch of notes to fill in details. The letters are from a military man to his wife while he goes on a mission with (what seems to be) the Ministry of Purity. 

The wife he’s writing to is the final boss of the fractal, lashing out and wrapped up in grief from losing her family, The ‘spirit’ that asks you to ascend the peak seems to be the spirit of the pair’s daughter, Lan, judging by the childish way it speaks and the spirit’s characteristic misspelling/mispronouncing words, evidenced in this letter by her. 

So it’s a little story about the lone survivor of a wiped out family. The letters you find around the peak were carried there by Ai and seemingly dropped in her grief as she ascended? You can also complete an achievement to honour 3 graves, close to the final encounter. The graves are for the husband who wrote the letters, and Lan the daughter, and one other. 

Now here’s a bit I don’t fully get. 

Dessa acts strangely in this fractal. Rather than looking on as an observer she talks about things like they’re actually happening to her. This is the only (??) fractal where she doesn’t tell us to “be careful”. She hears the voices and feels ‘pressure’ from the spirit’s emotional state, and at one point, she recognises Ai as ‘the woman from the picture’. What picture is this! I don’t remember seeing one, how did she recognise her?

Near the beginning Dessa also says the area seems “odd, but sort of familiar”. How could Dessa sense familiarity from this person who lived 200 years before the present day. 

The 3 members of this family have a presence of sorts in the fractal: the letters are from the husband of Ai, Ai is the voice telling you to leave and the final boss, and Lan the daughter is now the spirit of the mountain. But there are 3 graves to kneel at with inscriptions. The third grave is dedicated to ‘CMD’

The August Beauty poem is also a book found nearby that seems to be written by the husband to one of the others. But what stands out here is C.M.D. That’s not a name where the gravestone’s name should be. 

There’s precedent for 3 letter acronyms in fractals before. Arkk’s inventions, the DDR and PDF. That is the only thing that comes to mind for the letters CMD, apart from it being a general contraction for ‘command’ in computers/programming. As an acronym. As in, Arkk the programmer who hacked the fractals themselves and created the Chaos fractal. 

Was the third grave.... edited by Arkk to display something else related to his fractal inventions? This is a massive guess, but why else would Dessa be having an emotional reaction, sensing a familiarity with this fractal about a woman losing her husband and daughter, if not because it reminds Dessa of her son?
