Ursine Battle Royale!
(part 4)
"I'm telling you, Huck old buddy," excitedly exclaimeth Hokey Wolf one morning over breakfast, "I may have come up with perhaps the ultimate show in wrasslin' of the old school, one GUARANTEED to give modern 'professional wrestling' the dyspepsia!"
Which only saw That Oh So Merry, Chuckleberry, Huckleberry Hound respond with blushing modesty typical of him in a way, "Shucks, Hokey--and who did you have in mind as the combatants?"
"Why, none other than Breezly Bruin, The Terror of the Tundra ... and Square Bear from the Hair Bear Bunch, he of the Invisible Motorcycle and all other groovy schtick that the trio happens to be known for!"
"I get the idea, Hokey."
"And besides, I admit that the inspiration was a little on the tacky side."
"I believe you mean those attacks at Milwaukee's old Washington Park Zoo when a polar bear drowned three black bear cubs in their display pen for no apparent reason--"
"Only to have the zookeeper claim 'playfulness' as a patsy ... and to make matters worse, such happening no less than three times!"
"It just makes you wonder what exactly this world is coming to," wistfully remarked Huckleberry Hound over coffee and a malted waffle. After a short pause: "Hokey ... how exactly is it that you come up with such absurd ideas in the first place?"
"Huck, it's simple ... Money!"
Which left Huckleberry somewhat dumbfounded.
=============
Meanwhile, for some while, preparations on the part of both ursine camps in preparing the contenders for such an unlikely show of "wrasslin'" in Battle Royale form were well underway:
In Breezly Bruin's case, such entailed the gym and workout rooms of the Peter Potamus Travelling SCUBA Par-tay at its La Jolla complex aimed at maximising the performance of the divers physically and mentally. And as if the body bag and grappling moves weren't good enow, there were also swimming sessions in the evaluation pool of the troupe.
As for Square Bear, some unlikely sparring partners in the wrasslin' game were procured by Hair Bear from a "drive-through" wildlife park as was otherwise in its death throes (and, more likely than not, were actually at the wildlife park proper) ... lions and tigers and bears, oh my! as sparring partners, not to mention plenty of running and jogging on the Secret Surf and Dive Spot's beach.
Meanwhile, Pratt's Rainbow Gardens, the venue for such a display, was somehow caught unaware of what they wanted to stage, even with a pay-per-view hookup in the offing, thanks to master showman Hokey Wolf's flair and charm in seeking the old mazuma. Luckily, two show cancellations on short notice freed up the scheduling so that the Ursine Battle Royale! (as Hokey was promoting the whole) could actually be carried out, even with barely a month's time for to prepare for the whole.
And nothing could be weirder a show in the offing than this.

Grateful Dead Monthly: Jahrhunderthalle – Frankfurt, West Germany 4/26/72
Tumblr media
On Wednesday, April 26, 1972, the Grateful Dead played a concert at Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt, West Germany.
Tumblr media
Jahrhunderthalle was designed by architect Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer. It opened in 1963 as a multipurpose venue, hosting events, exhibitions, and conferences. It also hosted the ninth show of the Dead’s epic Europe ’72 tour.
Tumblr media
And what a show. When ECM and I discussed possible April GDM dates, this one quickly rose to the top of the list. He flagged this version of The Other One as “among the very best, if not the best.” And he directed me to an Live Music Archive review from clementinescaboose:
Tumblr media
“This amazing performance is possibly the finest of Euro ’72, though there are several other contenders including 4-14, 5-11, and 5-26. The whole show is great, and has long been a favorite of mine ever since its partial release on Hundred Year Hall. But the second set jam suite is, much like most of the tour, the highlight here.
Truckin kicks off this suite in great fashion, with an amazingly high energy jam with plenty of jazzy Other One teases. This is probably the best version of the tour imo. After a brief drums the band launch into an absolutely legendary Other One that is so in the zone it has to be heard to be believed. It’s always hard to pick “best” versions of Dead jams, but dare I say that this Other One is not only likely the best of the tour, but possibly the best of all time. The band is just locked in perfectly, Garcia especially weaving some serious magic. There are more than a few hints at a thematic jam (possibly Feelin’ Groovy) before things quite down and get spacey after the verse. Phil starts up a great theme that sounds very much like the band’s performances of Clementine from 1968. From here, things start to get pretty hairy, building up to a wildly intense Tiger, with Jerry shredding and Bobby throwing out Spanish jam teases underneath the wash of sound. The final 8 minutes many be the best part, however, as Garcia and company wind through a spellbinding jazz jam that flows and builds with jaw-dropping intensity, as the band comes crashing into the second verses. WOW!!!
Things come back to earth with a contemplative Comes a Time, and Bob and Jerry rock out hard on Sugar Magnolia. But this set is still not over, with an epically jammed, bluesy Lovelight and great versions of GDTRFB and OMSN to end this legendary show, which gets my highest possible recommendation.”
Tumblr media
Thanks, Ed. And thanks, clem. As clem noted, most of this show was originally released as Hundred Year Hall, the first official release after Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995.
Tumblr media
The entire show is now volume 9 of the Europe ’72 box set. Here’s the Spotify widget.
More soon.

Rent the Other ‘Brady Bunch’ House in Studio City for $12,500 a Month
ABC Photo Archives/ABC via Getty Images; realtor.com
The “Brady Bunch” house currently being restored to its former groovy glory for an HGTV series isn’t the only home with a tie to the iconic ’70s sitcom.
There’s another home—also in Studio City, CA—that served as the home of Mike Brady and the boys before they moved in with Carol and the girls in the first episode of the series. Now you can rent this pad with a Brady connection for $12,500 per month.
This one is still owned by the same family for whom it was designed by Paul Williams and Howard Frank back in the early ’60s. Located in the bucolic celebrity enclave known as Fryman Canyon Estates, the home has been exceptionally well-preserved. Furthermore, we think it’s cooler than the more famous Brady house, located about 2 miles away.
A solid glimpse of this home appeared in the show’s first episode, titled “The Honeymoon.”

Like the more familiar home the blended family wound up sharing, this home’s exterior was used for establishing shots in scenes where architect Mike Brady is nervously preparing for his wedding. His sons and housekeeper Alice attempt to calm him down, and you see him in front of the home, running to and from his car.

Perhaps the family should have stayed put in this glorious home. After all, it offers four bedrooms: one for the parents, one for the boys, one for the girls, and one for Alice.
It also has four bathrooms, so the boys and girls wouldn’t have had to share in that odd Jack-and-Jill arrangement.

The icing on the cake? This home sits on a spacious, 4,016-square-foot lot with gorgeous landscaping and a pool!
Think of the pool parties and the pool rules Mr. Brady would have set forth for the kids! Plus, there would have been plenty of room for Tiger and Fluffy to avoid each other.

We’ll probably never know why this home wasn’t used for the rest of the series, but show creator Sherwood Schwartz reportedly lived in Fryman Canyon and was friends and neighbors with the owners of this home before he moved to Trousdale Estates.
One thing is certain: If it had been the “Brady Bunch” house, there’s no way anyone would have been able to rent it for $12,500 per month.
The original homeowners passed the stylish property on to their children. It’s now in a family partnership and has been a rental property for more than a decade.
Dan Weiser of The Agency, who’s represented the home over the years, says it’s popular with families, especially those who like to entertain, since the grounds are so spacious. It’s also in the coveted Carpenter School District, which boasts public schools among the best in the nation, Weiser adds.

What makes the home a true standout, he says, is the abundance of storage space. There are multiple walk-in closets, cupboards, bookcases, drawers, and shelves, some of them cleverly hidden behind wood panels.

The home sits back from the street, behind mature foliage, and it backs up onto Wilacre Park, a nature conservancy. Fryman Canyon Estates is known for its mountain park and hiking trails, but this home is hidden from prying eyes.
The home’s “swanky midcentury modern feel” also appeals to style aficionados, Weiser adds. It’s conveniently located near the studios in the San Fernando Valley, as well as the entertainment hubs of Hollywood and Beverly Hills.
It appears that Carol and Mike Brady missed out when they moved from this midcentury modern masterpiece to the more generic split-level currently being remodeled by HGTV. Oh well. That’s showbiz. Their loss is a lucky tenant’s gain.
