A career as prolific as Yukihiro Takahashi's greatly exceeds what can be described in few words. His influence on video game music, alone, would merit a musicology thesis. His dexterous and contagiously energetic drumming set something of an impossible standard for music in 1980′s japan.
Takahashi was, himself, an occasional game music composer. His debut in the medium dates from 1987 with Ginga No Sannin, the Pax Softonica Famicom adaptation of an early Enix sci-fi RPG Chikyū Senshi Rayieza. The Battle Theme playing in the video is an arrangement of what is perhaps his most iconic and revered composition, Rydeen.
In the day we mourn his passing, I will be exploring the depths of the game’s cheerfully colorful galaxy at the beat of his legendary drum.

Ok, so this is both embarrassing and like, how it goes.
This track has a heavy #chiptune vibe because of its place on the record, but there’s a section that kicks in midway that has such a thick groove that I get stuck in it.
I make music that I want to listen to, maybe you’ll like it too.

hey y'all! it's been a minute, hasn't it?? I just started fooling around in FL studio and had a blast making this song. I used a Kirby's Dream Land 3 soundfont, some sounds from SMRPG, and a bass plugin that came with the entry-level pack. track is inspired by zouk/cadasse/samba/jersey club and the GOAT Tee Lopes, WHO LIKED AND REPOSTED MY MIX ON TWITTER AAAAAAAAAA!! I can't believe after making Meow Mix Mario Paint 17 years ago I'd still be celebrating VGM!!!
anywho, hope y'all enjoy!! take care!!

12 Albums of 2023
The nature of my current job means that I have pretty long periods where I'm doing hands-on but mindless work. Since I'm working with samples that can't be contaminated, being able to mess with my phone to adjust my music is out of the question, and so I entered the world of Youtube playlists and full albums, giving me hours of uninterrupted jams. Because of that, I've widened my music taste quite a bit and found a ton of new albums, so I thought it would be fun to highlight some of my favorites from this year!
TECHDOG1-7: Patricia Taxxon
Tumblr media
There isn't anything I can say about this album that encapsulates the experience of listening, except to assure you that about a third of the way in I could feel new neuronal connections happening in my brain. This album puts all of her talents on display, reaching an almost divine level of vibes. Drawing on all her experiences and previous work, this feels like a beautiful medley of all the things that made her previous albums so beloved. The lush quality of Taxxon's music is all-encompassing, stimulating the senses so thoroughly that I can't recommend anything but sitting back, closing your eyes, and letting the album itself guide you.
Note: Including TECHDOG1-7 is a bit of a cop out on my part, as this is a compilation of 7 albums released in succession by Taxxon. They're all great though, so you can't do wrong picking any one of them :)
2. Music for Animal Cafes: Nobonoko
Tumblr media
Though I find Animal Cafes to be one of many absolute bangers in nobonoko's discography, there's something to be said about this album in particular. It has all the brightness and joy present in their other works, and vibes spectacularly throughout its hour runtime. The established mood is jazzy and comfortable, and serves as a great entry point into the rest of their music.
3. SEPPUKU: chocomilk-chan
Tumblr media
At almost two hours in length, SEPPUKU is easily the longest album in this list (not including the TECHDOG compilation). It uses that time effectively, effortlessly changing timbres and textures throughout its run without ever losing its core. The harsh, almost crackly drum synths provide an effective foundation for whatever new components chocomilk adds on top, from lush chords to piercing chimes. This is an album that experiments with sound while focusing on maintaining momentum, smooth enough to chug along in the background and complex enough to intrigue anyone who wants to listen more deeply.
4. arc,regn: greenhouse (Halley Labs)
Tumblr media
I don't think Halley Labs has ever produced anything but great albums, and this is no exception. Right from the beginning, you're met with lush chords and masterful use of panning, which continues throughout the entire album like a lifeline. Not only is the music rich with complexities, catchy lines, and musical talent, but there is an obvious mastery of the medium itself on display. The album creates a world all its own as it weaves through new sounds and arcs. I wouldn't bother putting this on as BG music, as the layers of sound here are more likely to draw you in like it did me!
5. Pawprint Panic!: Napcast
Tumblr media
This album absolutely jams. Calling to mind indie DS-era titles, the bouncy and bright synths are kept moving by a groovy bassline and funky drums. Jazzy melodies soar overhead on toybox-esque synths and piano, maintaining a grounded but playful quality. Expertly unified, it truly feels like an OST dredged from the 00s golden age, imbued with an infectious rhythm and bangers that make you wonder how this isn't on every VGM playlist. Listen in an open room, because this album WILL make you want to dance.
6. anemoia: kurokocchi
Tumblr media
This album is all about contrast. The piano melodies wouldn't feel out of place in a lofi jam or a music box, but thrashing beneath is a drumbreat that lends an almost manic energy to the songs. With simple, looping lines that encircle and chase the frenetic percussion, anemoia captures the essence of gleeful, uncontrolled anxiety. The bursts of sound and wild motion makes the album pass by in an instant, leaving you breathless with its memory when the final beat hits. Don't listen after a cup of coffee-- your heart might stop.
7. Mage's Cauldron for Sweet Dreams: Tottomori
Tumblr media
And now for something completely different! A reprieve from the endless list of high energy beats and breakcore that I just recommended, Mages Cauldron instead creates an overwhelming sense of calm, relishing in the stillness and silence. With sparse melodies and long stretches of quiet, Mages Cauldron soothes and placates, seeming to slow down time itself as it constructs its ambiance. Building as the album continues, you can see the forest take shape in your mind's eye through the melodies. This is an album to sit by the fire with-- let yourself be invited to the world it creates and relax.
8. Lucky Tiger: Telenights
Tumblr media
Ever listen to an album that just *vibes*? If you like that kind of music, Lucky Tiger might be your jam. With steady grooves, carefully placed pads, and a subtle yet confident mastery over sound design, Lucky Tiger creates an atmosphere like no other. The albums slides effortlessly back and forth between more ambient qualities and forward grooves, encouraging you to move along with it. Disparate elements from classical guitar to jazz sax to hiphop percussion hold hands, nothing overpowering the other as the album fuses these styles to create something all its own. Take a sip: it goes down smooth.
9. Sun Colored Eyes: Mabisyo
Tumblr media
In the same (vapor)wave as Telenights, Mabisyo delivers expertly with snazzy beats and a concrete atmosphere throughout the mixtape. This album serves as a highlight to the refinement of their production process, expertly blending samples and making great use of their sonic toolkit to elevate the experience. Each song builds on the last, adding more layers and using samples in entirely new ways that form a melodious, cohesive whole of all the disparate parts. TLDR? This thing bangs.
10. music for bugs - camiidae
Tumblr media
Light, airy, and with the cutest accompanying visuals I have ever seen, music for bugs wins my vote for most delightful album of the year. Laying the bells and piano with nature sounds gives the album a friendly and soothing ambiance, which carries the soft melodies and sparse chords. A great album for a nice walk
11. Meadow Theatre - Gumboot
Tumblr media
In the same vein as music for bugs, Meadow Theatre creates a naturalistic, quiet ambiance accented by soft, hiphop beats. Drawing from a myriad of samples and mixing them with elegance, the album creates the ideal environment for quiet contemplation, settling into looping sections at the end of each track that know just when to change things up before they overstay their welcome. It's a nice album to settle down with
12. Seasons - Kate Short
Tumblr media
Rounding out the list is the only non-instrumental album, which maintains a sweet and soft acoustic quality throughout. With poignant lyrics and a masterful understanding of space and silence, Short creates an album that glides along with poise. With lush instrumentals and a clear voice, this album becomes nothing short of transcendental

ULTRAVIOLET VISIONS: Perfect Dawn, Bandcamp Friday, and New Releases
Happy Bandcamp Friday UVF!!! I hope you've all been well and are ready for the start of the upcoming cycle of new UVF releases! We''ve got a ton of things to talk about in this week's blog, starting off with the long awaited announcement of the upcoming debut album from TRUMAN! and portal.rwb's (aka me!) new alias Lunar Data Garden!
"Perfect Dawn" by Lunar Data Garden
Tumblr media
The announcement was posted on the Lunar Data Garden's Bluesky page in tandem with the Blue Moon and the beginning of the next lunar cycle. The first single from the record "Back To You Pt. 1" will drop on the night of the New Moon, September 15th, and the full album "Perfect Dawn" will release on the night of the next full moon, September 29th. Lunar Data Garden (aka LDG) is a data safe haven, where any and all past data signals can be decoded and given a new life. The Garden is overseen by the two moons: Natura being the Lunar body of the natural world, and Digitura being the physical manifestation of the digital world. When the orbit of the two moons come together in parallel, we achieve an event of transcendental harmony, a Perfect Dawn. Lunar Data Garden has been a project that Truman and I have had in the works since December last year. After working with Truman on the "hello gravity! 떨어지는 (Deluxe Edition)" release on UVF, and after finishing "ULTRAVIOLET CATHARSIS", we have been working on and off on what we have titled "Perfect Dawn". The album is a beautiful blend of both Truman and I's respective styles, and embraces a very Y2K aesthetic. We started off by back and forth sending each other sample ideas and aesthetic images until we started to finalize what our sounds or visuals would be. The first glimpse of LDG could be found at the end of my Skylive 2023 live set, where I played the track "Secret Place" off Perfect Dawn, as well as officially announcing the collab between Truman and I. Over the 9 months, we have been dying to share what we think is a fresh new take on the Vaporwave genre and we can't wait for you all to hear! "Perfect Dawn" is scheduled to release on Friday, September 29th with CDs and Minidiscs available on ULTRAVIOLET-FUTURE.
NEW ALBUM RELEASES
This week's blog post happens to line up on Bandcamp Friday, so I thought I'd review and recommend some albums on Bandcamp you should all check out and support today <3.
"Peacock Tail of Rainbow Magic" is the latest installment in the Afterdeath Television discography. This album opens up with this beautiful, kaleidoscopic intro "Kill Your Ego Before You Enter" that is just filled with atmosphere and just feels like the audio equivalent to a breath of fresh air. The album is very much in this sorta "Prog Vapor" lane similar to a lot of newer releases from death's dynamic shroud. "Is It Love" is this epic blend of vocal samples from so many different sources that some how all stay together as a cohesive idea. I love the track "Compass Play (Sky Seams)" with its super groovy bass and infectious vocal samples. The track centers around this Demi Lovato sample until the song finally explodes around the halfway point into this dramatic break-beat filled climax. Overall, I love how effortlessly Afterdeath Television is able to blend so many different samples together and form something new in the end. Favorite Tracks: Compass Play (Sky Seams), Crystal Moon
"Dense Object Forest" by out://0f//bounds is the brand new release to come out of the side alias of fellow UVF artist, Two Circles. Dense Object Forest is 10 tracks of Ambient-Electronic VGM styled Vaporwave. The opener "Trailhead (花柄)" welcomes us into this new world with its bubbly arpeggio sample that ping pongs in between your brain. The 2-part self titled tracks feel like the background music to some kind of RPG where you're just standing idly by in some kind of forest village. I love the deep soothing chords in the track "Refracting Crystal Cavern" that are accompanied by this drum loop that just drives the whole thing forward and puts you in a trance throughout the whole experience. The track "Lamp Light Off" is such a beautiful way to close off this album and say goodbye to the little world that was created before it. It's main melody is like a lullaby putting you to sleep and having you reflect on your time spent travelling through this Dense Object Forest. I am always stoked to new music come from both out://0f//bounds and Two Circles. If you haven't checked out any of their work, I highly recommend you start here! Favorite Tracks: Trailhead (花柄), Refracting Crystal Cavern, Lamp Light Off
Other Bandcamp Friday Recommendations
"Species of Crystalline Genesis" by Life Silence Genesis is easily one of the craziest vapor-related releases I've discovered recently. Dropping back in April 13, 2020, this album features production from Claud Sheffner, Métropolita, and Palmer in this insane fusion of Plunderphonics, EDM, and Glitch Pop. I found this album just digging around through the Vaporwave/Plunderphonics tab on Bandcamp and was instantly hooked upon hearing the first track "I Know It". This track boots up with this EDM style riser and these Miley Cyrus vocal chops that glitch and distort while building up to this huge climax, where these high pitched vocals squeal as if at the top of a mountain. Many tracks through out the album feature samples that sound vaguely familiar until they become warped and contorted. The track "Minus Blossom" is another highlight track with its simple sample loop until we gradually stretch the sample into unfamiliarity in this grand glitchy Vapor-trap epic. I'm absolutely in love with how this album maintains balance through the chaos and how it's able to blur the lines between cohesion and incohesion. I highly recommend people check out this album as well as the rest of the music from this artist, seeing that they seem relatively unheard of. Favorite Tracks: I Know It, Deep Haze, Minus Blossom, Slow Decay, Sideways In Time
"Connections" is the most recent project to drop from fellow UVF artist, scarecrow_back in April this year. Easily being my Album of the Year so far, Connections shows scarecrow_ combining everything about their music into one jam packed, eclectic Vapor/Electronic odyssey. The production on this album is scarecrow_ at their best while continuing to come up with so many new and fresh song ideas. "Full Of Color" is exactly as described with its grand drums and bursts of glitchy vocals panning through your ears. "Conciliation Programme" feels like a celebratory opening after this world Full Of Color has been opened. I love how "...and Never Will Be" is a call back to their older release "Never The Same" with the use of the same samples as the insane track "Reality Breaker". "Combined" has this beautiful synth progression following this main Ariana Grande sample until the track breaks down at the midway point and shifts unexpectedly in classic scarecrow_ fashion with this break-beat section that closes the track off perfectly. "Relentless" has been a favorite of mine since it was showcased back with the teaser of the album. The beginning is so melodic and beautiful as this lullaby-like melody starts to build and fade away when the mid section comes in. The track slams through with these abrupt sample chops and transitions into this groovy dance beat. The track flip flops back and forth until these growling Dubstep-like synths come in that somehow still blend together with the earlier elements of the track. Honestly, I can't possible encapsulate any of scarecrow_'s music perfectly in a blog post so I highly recommend you all to check this release out for I'm sure you are going to be blown away. Favorite Tracks: Full Of Color, Conciliation Programme, Combined, Relentless
ULTRAVIOLET-FUTURE & portal.rwb
Thank you all for checking out this week's UVF blog! I've been on vacation from work these past two weeks, while simultaneously planning out the upcoming months for UVF releases, finishing up Perfect Dawn, and getting things ready to print the 1st Edition UVF Magazine, so it's been a super busy time for me. The only thing I ask this Bandcamp Friday is to support the label in any way and check out my solo music as portal.rwb/flx. I've been trying to balance running the label as well as continuing to make more music as an artist, so any support means a ton to me <3. Any purchases made today go 100% to UVF and get split 50/50 with the artists, without the cut from Bandcamp, or you can even tip any amount here on our Tumblr page! Make sure to also join us over at our discord to keep up with the community and to be in the know for any future releases on the label. Thank you all again, please support your favorite artists, and I hope to see you all in next weeks blog <3! -portal from UVF

Song Recs! Vgm Ost! (Part 1)
Have you heard of Elebits? (Eledees for all the PALs out there)
It's a cool game about capturing little light creatures because you're playing as a kid with mostly absent parents (because they spend so much time at their jobs working with the light creatures).
It has a soundtrack that I really like, that kinda comes in 2 flavors
Vibey Synth Stuff and Darker Bluesy Stuff
And I very much enjoy these two flavors, so I'll be listing some of my favorite songs (or maybe all of them) from this soundtrack (composed by Naoyuki Sato and Michiru Yamane)
As usual, songs names are linked, followed by things I like about the song.
Vibey Stuff
Story Mode Menu
Very sparse synth chords, cool distorted violin sound
Tutorial
Pretty piano, awesome breakbeat-ish drums (plus a solo), very washy compressed sound (especially the ride)
Editing mode
Cool marimba-ish sound, piano pad, kinda got a samba feel tbh
Extras menu
My favorite on the soundtrack
6/8, compressed-ass drums, cool pad on the 1 during first section
Sparse second section with interesting chords, cool as hell drum fills leading back into first section
Multiplayer mode
Kinda radio-ish at the start, quick EP flutters, mellotron-ish violin, synth in right ear
Options menu
Very soft and calming, piano w/delay in right ear, CAJON
Mission results and Final results
Love the bouncy feel in the first one, love the sleigh bells in the second, love the sub bass in both
Mom & Dad's room
Kinda between both styles. Cool horns and ambient EP. Feels kinda shiny
The silent kitchen
Plucky bass, has a background pad that seems a bit off tune but in a good way
Quiet in the living room
Very plucky EP, same pad as previous I think, the ep with a delay effect near the end reminds me of Minecraft
Shadow in the garage and My town
Intro kinda makes you think it's the other genre haha, cool organ, cool groove, cool marimba in the second one, the speed of the second one makes me think of Spain by Chick Corea
World without weight and The secret room
The synth pad makes me think of the soundtrack of the game Monolith, kinda odd chords sometimes
Totally topsy-turvy and Big to-do in town
First one is simple and calm, love the delay synth/EP near the end, second one is more energetic and groovy and has a marimba solo (kinda)
To the amusement park! and An Elebit state of mind?!
First one hits hard, cool lead synth, reminds me of DSCO by Sweet Trip, second one is more subdued + cajon again
Fancy some candy? and Puzzle panic
Rare instance where the first song is the slower one
Has my favorite chord change in it, first has weird-ass funky bassline, second has less-weird-but-still-funky bassline
A spaceship fantasy
Ambient dnb shit pretty cool
Shopping in style and My favorite hero show
Kinda evil and funky but the second one is more triumphant in the main section
Me and my little war and Me, Elebits, and fate
Zora's domain called
Cool and sparkly and then a waltzy thing
Sky, sea, and land (bosses)
Takes the melody from the trailer video
Vs the zero Elebit
Cool bass. can't figure out what it reminds me of (Black Sunshine by White Zombie? TF2?)
In the next post I'll cover the other half of the soundtrack plus any stragglers that don't fit either bill.

Lately Kind of Yeah - Espers (VULP-0151)
Part of the Lately Kind of Yeah archive series.
Espers sees LKOY return to a VGM-influenced synth sound through the generative, evocative landscape of titles from "Time Chaser" and "Ghost of the Asteroid". My personal favorites of this near-2 hour adventure are the sparkling, progressive "Flux Frozen" and decisively groovy “The Menu Altar”. Words from the artist: "Espers compiles nearly two hours of electronic demos and sketches, divided into a few sections with material dating as far back as 2008. Tracks 1–26 consist of assorted finished songs with the inclusion of limited releases 'Indicator' and 'Rabbit Troop', while the back-half runs through a number of shorter ideas for the sake of collection and interest. Quianna Fick again provides cover artwork following the previous electro release 'Phthalo'."
