Jack and John looked Bob over thoughtfully as they sat on the other side of the interrogation table. He seemed so… different like this. And no, it wasn’t the thin orange jumpsuit, nor the massive cuffs needed for his wrists. It wasn’t the change of scenery, the drab grays and loneliness sharply contrasting the bright, public environments he usually staged his massacres in.

It was his calm, downcast, almost sad expression. The complete opposite of his sinister smile and gaze that stares into your soul. The way he slouched in his chair. His former sadistic air had just about dissipated and he looked like little more than a pathetic old man. He was almost a different man.

“So…” John started with a sigh, sitting forward in his chair. “You’re a cannibal?”

Bob’s gaze flicked up for a moment, before settling back on the table in front of him, humming out a quiet agreement.

“And how many of your victims have you actually… eaten?” he pressed, keeping an eye on the biggest’s every movement, studying his body language.

Bob seemed to think for a moment, counting on his hand before looking up at them again.

“I believe a bit of each… so, technically, all of them…” he finally said, his gaze lowering once again as he spoke.

“And how did this whole cannibalism thing begin, Mr. Velseb?” Jack asked.

The oldest heaved a deep sigh, emotion beginning to show deep in his eyes.

“That’s an… old tale, officers. One that I’m sure would be too borin for ya…” he said carefully, his expression just barely displaying distress.

“I’m sure a tale that ends with you as a man-eating serial killer is far from boring,” John reasoned.

“Hm… I suppose you have a point, but it’s a tale I’m not too… fond of, let’s say.”

“And why is that?” Jack questioned.

“Have you… ever been betrayed, officers? Either of ya?”

“Not yet, no,” the other ravenette answered, his partner grunting in agreement.

“Hm. ‘Yet.’ Bein realistic, I see… how else can I put this, then?” he seemed deep in thought for a few minutes before he continued.

“Have you ever done somethin you regret, but knew, in that moment, that you had to?”

“Well, yeah, of course,” Jack answered again.

“As officers, we usually have to make that decision on the field,” John affirmed, silently hoping that being a bit more open with Bob would encourage the same.

“Well… my story starts with a decision like that… or, well, the crimes did…”

He took a deep breath, finally locking eyes with the two.

“My story begins with me… and a friend. My closest friend, and maybe most loyal customer, a man named Corey, twelve long years ago. He and he were inseparable. Game nights, huntin, watchin football, every cliche thing two men could do, we were doin. And we loved it.

“He’d come by Boys ‘N Grills damn near every day at lunch, and we’d chat about whatever came to mind. Somethin new that caught our eyes, different grillin techniques, an idea about what to do after work, everythin.

“In fact, one day, Corey suggested we’d go hikin. He insisted it’d be a fun little adventure, and dammit, he looked so excited, how could I say no? Heh, it was endearin, almost cute as one of y’all might put it.

“We packed our things, and, around October 15th-ish, I believe, we set out in the woods. I remember it was right smack-dab in the middle of Spooky Month, and he was so excited for our ‘Spooky hike’, as he put it. And, I’ll admit, I was excited, too. It was nice gettin to go out and do somethin new with him.

“But, despite everythin we packed, our first mistake was leavin behind our compass. When me and him realized this, Corey assured me that we didn’t need it, that if we kept track of how many turns we made, we’d be alright. But that was our second mistake, trustin either of us to remember anythin while occupied with all the sights. After a while, all the trees started to look the same, and when I finally got scared of losin our way, it was too late. Corey kept insistin that we weren’t lost and could get back home easy, but I wasn’t sure… he should’ve listened to me…”

Bob trailed off, clutching his bandaged right hand. The searing pain from the bullet wound, when his hand had been shot to disarm him, felt like a little bug bite in comparison to the pain growing in what used to be a hollow chest. He wanted to focus more on the wounds outside than inside. He didn’t want to tell this story. But he had to, he knew he did.

“Hours turned to days… days turned to weeks… weeks turned to half a damn month we were out there. We were growin desperate after runnin out of food within the first few damned days… We couldn’t tell poisonous berries apart from safe and didn’t dare run the risk. We hadn’t brought any guns or fishin rods, and no matter how hard we tried, spearfishin always ended with us empty handed. We were lucky we didn’t see any bears or wolves out there, or I don’t think I’d’ve survived, either…”

“Are you saying that Corey died in the woods?” Jack interjected.

“If you’d let me finish, you’d’ve found that out… but yes… one day, Halloween, I think it was, somethin… happened to him. He couldn’t take it anymore. And, with the only weapon we had, a single damn pocket knife, he attacked me… caught me off-guard and cut me up real bad. The whole time I tried to fight him off, tryin to get him to snap out of it, tellin him we’d be ok, that someone would find us. Tryin to have the positivity that he’d had at the beginnin, but he wasn’t havin none of it. He kept talkin about how out there, there was no friendship. There was no partnership. There was no ‘us’…” his gaze turned to the mirror at the side of the room, “Just me, him, and hunger, and that one of us had to go, so the other could go on. I just wanted to get him off of me… I just wanted to stay alive, I…” he began to choke on his words, feeling tears trying to push past his defenses. He couldn’t cry, not here, not now. Not with two officers staring him down, probably more behind the walls. But at the same time, telling his story was hard, and it made breaking down so easy, the very last things that he wanted to do, he had to do in this confession. He took a deep breath to try to compose himself and force the tears back, trying not to hear the whispers in his mind, what the police could possibly be saying about him, and press on with his story.

“When we were fightin, I… I threw him against a tree. I didn’t think it was that hard, but… I was wrong… he wasn’t movin… he wasn’t respondin… he wasn’t even breathin… I wanted him to be paralyzed, I really did, because even that was better than the truth… but… I knew what I’d done to him… I’d broken his back, and I’d killed him… I don’t remember how long I cried, just that we’d fought around noon, and when my eyes finally cleared, it was dark. I’d killed my best  friend, officers… And… I was so hungry… I know I should have just tried to look for something else, but at that moment… I… I don’t think I cared anymore…”

“Don’t say it…” Jack mumbled quietly.

“I ate him… I ate Corey… I felt like some kind of savage animal… it was the most bitter thing I’ve ever eaten… it tasted like pennies and raw pork and was every bit as bitter as straight, black coffee… And that’s not even the worst part…” he trailed off, losing his battle against his own tears despite how hard he tried to stay composed.

Seeing him in distress like this, even if he was a wanted criminal, it almost made the two officers feel bad for him.

“What was the worst part, then?” John prompted him to keep telling his story.

“The worst part… was that they found us the next day… or, I guess… they found me the next day… Corey was nothin more than a broken, dismembered corpse… and I’d buried him, so, they never found the body… My best friend, he deserved better than that… If I’d just held off one more day, if we’d held off just one more day I wouldn’t even be here right now!”

“That’s only one killing, what about the other several over the years?” Jack interjected, standing up.

“Officers… by now you must have noticed the pattern…”

“Yes, of course we have. One to three killings, every Halloween for the past eleven years, this year being the only exception besides the years you were in prison. We’d assumed it was to disguise it as a show.”

“That’s… not quite the truth. If you remember, I told you that me and Corey fought on Halloween… I ate him on Halloween night… well… somethin must have happened that night… or maybe there was somethin in his body but… Every Halloween, I get hungry… so, so uncontrollably hungry. I spend the day fightin it off, and the night… well, you can guess…”

“Hm… well, what changed this year? Like Jack said, this is the only year, besides your prison time, when you didn’t successfully kill someone. And we got to you pretty damn late, so what was keeping you from killing someone?” John asked, leaning forward in his chair as his partner sat back down. “Did it have something to do with this?”

The brunette produced a golden amulet tucked securely in an evidence bag. The amulet had a large, circular charm with a similarly round, baby-blue gem in the center, and two flowing, feather shaped decorations on the bottom. He set it down on the table and allowed the fugitive to examine it, although a single glance showed Bob knew exactly what it was.

“Where did you get that…?”

“One of our coworkers found it while we were going through your things, checking for evidence in case someone tried to plead a case for you. Interestingly enough, it looks just like the amulet worn by the assumed cultists running around, like this one,” Jack informed Bob, placing an image of a cultist on the table for proof.

“We’ll give you a moment to collect yourself, maybe some time to let it out,” John offered, noticing how the man was still having trouble from his near-breakdown earlier, “And then, maybe you can tell us what’s going on with you and the cult.”

A whisper near the door caught the attention of the two, whipping around to see the face of one of the aforementioned coworkers, none other than Shotty themself.

“Psst, guys, we got it,” they whispered, motioning to the two.

Jack nodded as he and John stood.

“Stay put and let it out, we’ll be right back. And don’t try anything,” he warned before the two headed out, meeting up with their colleagues.

“How much you get outta that guy?” Cap questioned, peering into the one-way window at Bob, who was finally crying, now that he was under the impression that he was alone.

“A lot, but it was all how he came to be a cannibal, and his urges. Did you two get what we asked?” John asked the two.

“Yep! And can I just add, this is a great thing you two are doing, especially you, Jack. I’ve never seen you give someone a second chance before,” Shotty said as they handed the stack of papers off.

“What are you talking about? I’ve given plenty of people a second chance!” Jack argued, a little offended.

“Name one.”

“Every cop in this town?”

“There’s four cops in this town, excluding you,” Cap pointed out, “And you never needed to give John a second chance because he’s basically our boss! Oh, also, not to divert or anything, but we figured the big guy would appreciate this stuff,” he handed the two a pack of tissues and a glass of water.

“Good, thanks. You two are being… really considerate towards a criminal. Something going on?” Jack asked, a bit suspicious of their behavior.

Shotty rolled their eyes a bit. “C’mon Jack, not everyone is as mean as you. I mean, yes, he has killed, like, a lot of people, but he still deserves tissues and water. Not to mention, from what we understand, he can’t actually help it, sooooo…”

“Fair. Now, we got one more job for you,” John finally spoke up again. “We need you to go talk to the mayor about our plan. He’ll listen to you more than he listens to us, for some god-forsaken reason, so if you talk to him about it, chances are he’ll listen.”

“You got it, boss,” Cap assured him.

“We’re on it! To Evermore’s houseeee!” Shotty cheered as they and Cap left.

“Hey, wait, don't go to his-! And they’re gone… oh those two are going to get fired one day…” the brunette grumbled.

Jack chuckled quietly, shifting the papers in his arms and looking into the one-way window at a now calming Bob.

“Looks like he’s stopping, should we head back in?”

“Mhm. Time to figure out what’s going on with that cult.”

The two stepped back into the interrogation room, Jack clutching the papers to his chest and holding the door as John carried over the tissues and water for Bob, sliding them over the table to the oldest. Wiping away his tears as the door slammed shut, the killer sighed heavily, having just let out twelve years of pent-up emotions in the span of a few minutes. He took a long sip of water as John continued from earlier.

“So, now that we’ve given you some time, what can you tell us about the cult?” the brunette got straight to the point.

“Nothin… I can’t tell ya nothin,” Velseb grumbled.

“And why is that?”

“I made a promise… and I always keep my promises. A good man always does, after all…”

“Barely a good man…” Jack grumbled, setting the paperwork in his lap.

“Well, I’m a man of my word, that’s for damn sure. And my word says I’ll keep quiet about that cult. All I can tell ya is they’re far more harmless than they seem.”

“Somehow, I have trouble believing that,” John argued. “But, is there anything we could do that could possibly convince you?”

“For that, officers, you’d have to do the impossible.”

“Which is?”

“Find out how to cure whatever the hell is wrong with me…”

The partners looked at each other before nodding, a knowing look in their eyes.

“Actually, Mr. Velseb, there might be a way,” Jack informed him, placing the stack of papers on the table, sliding them over to his fellow ravenette, who gave them a skeptical look.

“What’s this?”

“Paperwork. Paperwork to get you transferred from prison to a rehabilitation facility. This could be the key to your new life, Bob. With enough effort, we could help you completely get rid of your cannibalism… curse, in a sense. You’d never have to eat another person to satiate yourself again. In a few years time, you could be living a normal life, maybe even have a family,” John explained, gently pushing the papers more towards the unwilling cannibal.

“As nice as that’d be, officers… I’m afraid my reputation has been set in stone. No matter how many years of rehab I go through, I’ll always be Bob Velseb, feared and hated serial killer… no one will trust me to be in a store, no one will trust me to be alone. I’ll be monitored by everyone, no matter how many years go by. I’ll never have a normal life, nor a family. It’s too late to change that fact. However…” he began to think further about it, “your offer is temptin. Even if I can’t have a ‘normal life’, it would be nice to not have to deal with… whatever the hell happened to me. Do ya really think it’ll work…?”

“As long as you cooperate, then I think anything is possible, including helping you,” Jack reasoned, “but we need the information only you can give us.”

“You’re askin some pretty sensitive information… these people you’re investigatin, they’re not doin anythin wrong. I know they seem odd, maybe even creepy, but in all honesty, it’s more like a lil family thing. But that’s about all I can tell ya…”

“I know you can tell us a lot more, Mr. Velseb, and we can’t give you the papers until we have everything we need. It might seem a little unfair to you, but we can’t give you any sort of reward until we get what we asked for.”

Bob sighed a bit. He hated it, but understood. He’d either have to break his promise, or live out the rest of his life with an unbearable ‘curse’ in prison, most likely solitary confinement. Frankly, one option was far preferable to the other.

“Hm. Fine, I’ll tell ya what it seems like ya need to hear.”

The two cops glanced at each other before leaning forward a bit, signifying that they were listening.

“The cult isn’t quite what ya might be thinkin it is. The cult isn’t some high-and-mighty ‘our god is the only real god’, sacrificin, blood-thirsty, cliche cult from every doomsday movie. But, one thing’s for sure… that thing, whatever the hell it is… is real. I’ve looked into the depths of the hole it’s in, and I could almost feel it lookin back at me. They wanted me to meet it, but… they were kind when I refused. They seemed to understand, they let me in anyway. The leader, he told me that they didn’t like makin people uncomfortable. That they promoted comfort and happiness in the cult. As a matter of fact, they wanted me as a scout so they could help me overcome what I went through. I help them, they help me.

“They’re like a big family, the leader actin as a dad, in a way. Said somethin bout how he has a kid at home so it’s nothin new to him, I dunno. They meet every now and again, in that house on that hill. There’s a hole in the floor there that leads right to it. I’ve never seen it personally, but some of the members described it to me. Said it looks like a giant, pinkish, broccoli lookin thing, who’s head fades into darkness above, millions of baby-blue eyes formin the stars. A huge mouth that doesn’t even look like it’s connected with huge teeth that are on the outside, and long, kinda fluffy tentacles. They’ve told me what it’s like to look into it’s eyes, or, ‘the stars’, as they call it. They’ve said it makes ya almost numb, then their memories start blurrin together. I never get a straight answer of what happens after that, except that they ‘wake up’ feelin happy and calm, and that they’re already out of the hole when they come to. In fact, it can completely change someone’s attitude and everythin. I’m actually pretty close with someone who used to be bitter and spiteful, accordin to him, but after seein that thing, he was one of the calmest, kindest people I’d ever seen.

“Maybe that’s why I agreed to their deal… maybe I thought that thing could fix me. It seems like it changes people for the better. Bout everyone there either acted like that man, or was cheerful and sweet. I thought, if nothin else, it could make me happier. But, I got scared. I wussed out. I didn’t wanna see that thing, it sounded terrifyin. But, I guess in doin so, I kinda distanced myself from them, and the odd things that they liked…”

“What kind of things?” John asked, intrigued by his descriptions.

“Well, for the most part, affection. Especially ticklin. I don’t know why, but that seems like the thing everythin is centered around in that cult. I’ll run into people who can’t so much as say the word without lightin up in the face like a Christmas tree, or people who can say it so casually that they have full-blown conversations about it. I’ll walk past two or three tickle fights each meetin, ones that, half the time, end up bein very one-sided. Sometimes I’ll even let loose and join in. Though when that usually happens, I practically get dog piled and tickled until I can’t stop laughin for damn near an hour…” he chuckled a bit to himself, “It’s fun, though… I have to admit, they’ve got a damn good idea.”

“Tickling?” Jack asked in astonishment. Something so innocent from people who he’d thought just a few minutes ago were dangerous.

“Idea?” John echoed Bob’s words, more focused on the goal of this cult.

“Mhm. Spreadin happiness through a love of ticklin. It’s said that if you don’t already like it, seein the monster makes ya love it. I, personally, don’t mind it. But it’s not a strange, super-obsessive kinda love, it’s more like a sorta… what’s the word that he used…? Hyper… hyper… hyper-something-or-other… ah, hyperfixation, yeah. Basically, it’s almost always in the back of their minds, even when they don’t know it. Accordin to them, havin this shared love, bein able to confide in each other and be genuinely vulnerable with each other is actually really nice. And they wanna share this with the town. Simple as that.”

“That’s… really it? No hostile takeover bid? No ominous prophecy? No blood sacrifices?” Jack questioned, still in disbelief.

“Didn’t I tell ya at the start? No, none of that cliche doomsday shit. They just want to turn this small town into a happy family,” Bob reiterated, slightly annoyed.

12th Annual Pigz in Z’Hills State Championship is in the books!

The 12th Annual Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ & Blues Festival on March 4th & 5th , was thrilled to host its first large event, since COVID, more than two years ago. More than 4,000 people came out to enjoy the two-day festival at the Zephyrhills Municipal Airport. 12th Annual Pigz in Z’Hills State Championship is in the books! Music flowed from the AdventHealth Pavilion with blues on Saturday with performances by Memphis Lightning, The Kid Royal Band, Jimmy Griswold, and TC Carr. Successful events were added to Friday night and included a Kidz Grillin’ Competition, Cornhole Tournament, amazing music performed by ChuckRiley’s All-Star, and a local band, the Sandspurs. At any one time, hundreds of people were gathered to listen, dance, and eat award-winning barbecue purchased from the professional and backyard barbecue teams competing at the event.“We’re thrilled to see this event back in action. We, at the Chamber, are ecstatic to finally feel some sense of normal since COVID hit some two years ago,” said Melonie Monson, CEO of the Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce. “Being named as the Florida BBQ Association State BBQ Championship was an exciting honor and brought 56 teams from all over the state to compete and vie for the 2022 State BBQ Championship.” As usual, the festival was built around a Florida BBQ Association-approved barbecue competition. Fifty-six competition teams, both professional and backyard competed for top honors and trophies in four standard categories of Chicken, Pork, Brisket, and Ribs. Professional teams have the added incentive of potentially winning $10,000 in prizes. In the professional barbecue division, Accutech BBQ of Sarasota, FL. under head cook John Fries took top place overall winning the coveted 2022 State BBQ Championship. Hot Wachula’s of Bartow, FL., led by Matt Barber took Reserve Champion. Backyard division winners were Matty B’s of Plant City, FL. under Matt Bowers in first place, Sloppy Hogs of Naples, FL. took second place under Todd Bender. Three local teams finished high in the ranking; Bahr’s Smokin’ Butts under head cook Kevin Bahr finished 4 th Overall and 2 nd Place in Pork. Daryl Coleman ofColeman’s BBQ took 1 st Place in Ribs and 5 th Overall, and Dr. Rick Moore of Smoke Show took 1 st Place in Brisket. Monson stated, “It was great to see our local teams compete with the big guys and show off their skills and the great BBQ being made right here in Z’Hills. “ For the 12 th Anniversary celebration, the Chamber continued some great events on Friday night and the Kidz Grillin’ Competition was the highlight. This was made possible by many local businesses and premier sponsors, Bahr’s Propane Gas & AC and Chick-fil-A Zephyrhills. This event was put on by the chamber’s new foundation, The East Pasco Chamber Foundation, and hosted 25 kids ranging from 4-15 years old. “Sponsors from all over helped donate money, supplies, and goodies to make this event free for each competitor”, states Monson. “The Kidz Comp was my personal highlight of the weekend. More than five BBQ teams stepped up to mentor each competitor. It was so much fun to watch mentor and child figure out their rub, talk about how to cook the pork loin and encourage them every step of the way. I think parents and siblings had as much fun as the competitors.” Each kid walked away with a goodie bag full of great prizes with items donated by; Sonny’s BBQ, SouthState Bank, Light the Grill Catering & More, The Home Depot, Rural King, Hot Wachula’s BBQ Team, along with the meat which was donated by Publix of Zephyrhills. The Kidz Competition was judged by locals as well. Guest judges included, Scott Amole, owner of the Zephyrhills Chick-Fil-A, Councilman Kenneth Burgess, Scotty “Santa” Paulsen, Pastor Ken Ringeisen, and Councilwoman Jodi Wilkerson. “The evening ended with our winners being honored”, states Monson. “Twelve-year-old Devin Brown placed 1 st , with local cooks Aryana Coleman in 2nd , and Daniella Gutierrez taking 3 rd . Each child was recognized during the award ceremony with a medal and the top ten received certificates. The winners took home amazing trophies along with many cheers from the crowd. It is wonderful to see the impact Pigz has on our community.” The community festival offered fun for all ages with inflatables at the Kidz Zone, sponsored by Suncoast Credit Union, three cornhole tournaments, a business expo showcasing more than 60 vendors, along with concession vendors of all kinds. Also included was access to the Military History Museum, which is a must see in Zephyrhills. Local entrepreneurs from Rhino Smash, created the official 2022 State Championship BBQ Sauce, which is still available for sale at the Chamber office. Veteran Mike Schuerman won the raffle prize, which was a one-of-a-kind set of cornhole boards, donated by local artisan Bob Case. “As always, our Pigz committee did a bang-up job organizing this event. Our volunteers worked tirelessly throughout the day to make everything go smoothly,” concluded Monson. “Our logistics team lead by Bob Hartwig worked for days again this year to lay out the entire venue ensuring everyone was set up and happy. I can't express how thrilled I am to see the positive results from everyone’s hard work.” Over the years, the Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ & Blues Festival has distinguished itself to be a qualifier for four prestigious championship contests: the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational in Lynchburg, Tenn., considered the Super Bowl of BBQ contests; the American Royal World Series of BBQ in Kansas City, the world’s oldest contest; the Sonny’s Smokin’ Showdown Invitational of Sanford, Fla.; and the World Food Championships, in Orange Beach, Al. FIREWORKS IN RED, white, blue in the skies. Night sky is clear, that big sky country, open in all direction, stars unimpeded, a fighter takes to the air to watch over the festival celebration on fourth of July. THE JEALOUSLY AND ZEALOTRY of brother John knows no bounds, it’d be like him to send forth someone to intervene. No fun allowed in the Valley, there ought to be darkness and despair, break from tradition so the citizenry fall into submission. So fuck him. Getting Swole and Moving up 

I’ve been transferred!  I’ll probably be ending here in the MacGregor Ward.  I’M SO EXCITED!  So I've had a goal to serve in the Hermann Park ward because 9 months ago our member took us to the museum and we passed by the actual Hermann Park and it’s HUGE and beautiful. I was even willing to give up a car because it’s a bike only area.  Turns out that Hermann Park ain't even in the boundaries of the Hermann Park ward.  It’s in MacGregor.   Blessings!

Tuesday we had exchanges with all the sisters in the zone. I went with Hermana Faucett.  She's only been out for 6 weeks and is super fluent in Spanish.  Super inspiring.  I’m going to have to try to learn Spanish again. I lost the fire for awhile. We also put together a family history night and tried so hard to get some non-members there.....Didn't work out so well but our ward showed up.  They're awesome.  Saturday, we got a text from the Silverlake sisters saying that a little girl that we had taught the lessons to was getting baptized so we ended up going to Pearland for the baptism. It was super fun to see all the members from Silverlake again. Sunday, John came to church!!  He is a less active that we have been teaching pretty much these past two transfers and he finally showed up! Super excited for that. This week I've learned about how God just doesn't take situations away or magically make opportunities appear.  He is more like a "spotter."  When you're bench pressing and it’s really hurting and you physically/emotionally/mentally can’t lift it anymore.  He just puts two fingers on the bar and takes away just enough for you to lift the weight.  Don't worry mom, I’m not learning this because I’m the one suffering AND I know I’m not swole enough to come up with that analogy on my own.  We just had a super amazing sunday school lesson from someone who is swole :)

Need a good laugh? A couple of big comedians will be bringing the funny to two different South Florida stages this weekend: Chelsea Handler and Arsenio Hall. Handler is bringing her “Sit-Down Comedy Tour” to the Fillmore Miami Beach Friday night at 8 p.m. Every ticket comes with a copy of the comedian’s new book, “Life Will Be the Death of Me.” Click here for more info.

Summer is almost here and we’re already feeling the heat in South Florida. You what that means, right? The 7th annual Grillin’ and Chillin’ cookout is this weekend at Peacock Park. The free event pops off this Saturday at 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. The menu will include everything from traditional fingerlickin’ grub to Caribbean, Latin and Korean barbeque. Elton John + Lasers = Epicness

Random FAITH fella headcanons

Father Garcia used to be a boxer in his youth. Never in any professional capacity, just as like a side hobby and for exercise, still using it to keep fit now.

Even now, John will still just randomly bleed sometimes for no apparent reason. It's not even particularly demon related, it just happens sometimes.

Lisa actually has something of an interest in spiritualism outside of Christianity. Not so much into the occult or, of course, satanism or anything. Just kinda things like psychics and fortune telling and such.

John eats A LOT. Not necessarily to excess, just that he's a big guy with a big appetite. Any time he gets grillin' he buys enough food for a whole cookout and ends up eating most of it himself.

Gary, when not doing his whole demon cult thing, looks like an absolute disaster of a man. Hawaiian shirts, cargo short, socks and sandals, the whole thing. I just know he looks like a dweeb.

John has an amazing singing voice. Lots of practice in church choir and performances and that kind of thing. He loves singing and is always humming or mumbling a tune to himself. If not a hymn, then some 80s pop song or something. His voice is general is pretty clear and powerful, whether it be singing, public speaking or... Other vocal exercises.

Best Times to Visit Austin and What To Do

One of the best things about living in Austin is all the outdoor food and music festivals. Once spring hits there is SXSW and PGA TOUR’s Dell Technologies Match Play tour with non stop crawfish boils and swim time. Here is a list of my favorite events in Austin when you are not coming for a bachelorette or bachelor party (unless you want to tack it on around these)!

SXSW

SXSW , a two-week conference and party, is actually my favorite time of year. My New York City x West Coast world’s collide in my own town, and it’s SO cool! WHERE else do experts from the food, film, tech, music, and politics gather together in such a close nit space over two weeks- not even in NYC or LA. If your company is able to shell out thousands of dollars for a badge, you have access to see speakers like Kevin Systrom and Mike Kreiger from Instagram, Julia Kramer from Bon Appetit magazine who decides the “Hot Ten” best restaurants each year, producer and musician T Bone Burnett, comedian Kathy Griffin, marketing guru Bozoma Saint John.The Taco Meet up is also really cool as you get to try about 5 of the best tacos from around Austin.

If you don’t (like me!), there is still SO much going on and a lot of free parties and panels that brands through that are considered “unofficial.” A few of my favorites included: Outdoor Voices annual “A Brunch of Jogger’s,” Facebook’s concert showcase with Toro y Moi and later Ghostland Observatory through their other division Oculus, GOOP’s pop-up store and event with Brahmin bags (it does help if you have friends to get you in that work at these places), Malverde’s rooftop shows during music week above La Condesa, South x San Jose Free Concert Series in their parking lot with pop-up shops, panels by local entrepreneur’s and companies like: Bumble, Kendra Scott, Planoly, Packed Party.

The tip is to follow them on instagram, facebook, or subscribe and you’ll get all the invites and details! I was also lucky enough to see the preview of Hulu’s Shrill with Elizabeth Banks and Aidy Bryant, thanks to a friend who works for the theater here in Austin. Sitting on the same row as these actresses and producers and watching their work for the first time with them is an unmatchable experience. Texas Monthly, Yeti, Uber Eats all had music events and parties, and Rainey is another good place to check out activations and free stuff. Lastly, Wanderlust Yoga has free yoga for the whole two-weeks at Republic Square Park and a few great local brands like Juice Society, Fit Joy, GT’s Kombucha, Culina, and Cara Caulkins Communications hosted a Festival Recovery Lounge at a lovely Clarksville home to help those kick back into gear.

PGA TOUR’S DELL TECHNOLOGIES MATCH PLAY TOUR

Usually, the last weekend in March, this golf tournament takes place right by Austin 360’s bridge which has a great view of Lake Austin. Pro’s like Bubba Watson, Tiger Woods, Kevin Kisner play on the lovely course from Wednesday – Sunday with lots of local bbq, tacos, wineries, beers, Grey Goose lounges. It’s very intimate walking around and you’ll see the same folks and friends jaunting. There is also a lot of local fun going on with Save Muny more locally if you don’t make it out there.

CRAWFISH BOILS! Austin has an overflow of breweries, distilleries, BBQ joints, and outdoor music venues. You’ll find that right at the end of March and beginning of April that these places are dishing out the mud bugs with live music! Perla’s, TLC, The ABGB, and Scoot Inn to name a few.

AUSTIN FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL

C3 puts on this Austin Food & Wine Festival that showcases chef demos, wine tastings, and mostly local Austin and San Antonio chefs showing off their goods at the big Grand Tasting event held at Auditorium Shores with live fire pits, too. You’ll see cooking demos from some national big wigs like Jonathan Waxman, Nancy Silverton, Sarah Grueneberg, Aaron Sanchez, Andrew Zimmern. There are also evening events at Auditorium Shores like Grillin and Chillin where Tim Love hosts an outdoor dinner that you get to learn how to use a grill for. Rock Your Taco is always on Saturday night at Fairmarket with all kinds of taco creations from about 16 chefs and live music.

HOT LUCK FESTIVAL- Memorial Day Weekend

To kick off summer partners, Aaron Franklin (Franklin BBQ), James Moody (Mohawk and Guerilla Suit), and Mike Thelin (Feast Portland). This is extremely different than Austin Food & Wine. It’s all about the music and some baller chefs from all around the country doing their thing in a laid back atmosphere (even at Wild Onion Ranch) where it feels like it’s just a bunch of friends coming together to eat and drink. It’s everyone’s favorite chefs and restaurants flying in like Sara Kramer & Sarah Hymanson from Kismet in LA, Alon Shaya from New Orleans, Chris Shepard from Houston, Christina Tosi from Milk Bar all hanging with OUR favorite Austin chefs. The weekend food line up for 2019 is here. What makes it so great if you aren’t into diving into an entire food event is that you can still be a part of the fest and attend to music shows and feel the energy of the weekend. Some of these spots still have some creative chef snacks there, too and tickets are a much lower price point if you just want to dip in or even last minute. AUSTIN CITY LIMITS If music is your beat, ACL Music Festival is just ask exciting for you as SXSW is for me. The city is again flooded with musicians and awesome shows that play not only two weekends back to back at Zilker Park but also at music venues around town for smaller private late night shows at spots like Stubb’s, Scoot Inn, Mohawk,etc as well as surprise pop-ups at Continental Club and I even saw Arizona at a Chipotle! Each weekend, there are 3 days of full line ups for Friday, Saturday, Sunday with headliners such as: Paul McCartney, St. Vincent, Metallica, Blood Orange, The National, Sofi Tukker, Nelly, Odesza, Chvrches, etc. If you want to step up your game, go for the VIP tickets. You get your own double decker viewing area of the main stage, unlimited drinks, sparkling waters, lunch and dinner, braid bars, clean bathrooms, etc. People also love to come for all the local food and beer tents at ACL Eats. Torchy’s Tacos, Salt Lick BBQ, vegan cookie dough from Skull + Cakebones, Amy’s Ice Cream, Blender’s and Bowls, Austin’s Pizza, Juice Land, The Mighty Cone. It’s super hot- do not forget a hat or sun screen!

TEXAS MONTHLY BBQ FEST Each year the Top 50 Barbecue restaurants (according to Daniel Vaughn at Texas Monthly) come to the Long Center to put on a 4 hour BBQ festival with around 30 booths serving smoked meats, mac ‘n cheese, pie’s, beer, big red, whiskey, and Desert Door Sotol. There is live music and great bands to sit and sway too after you start experiencing the meat sweats. This past year was the first time Franklin BBQ did not attend the fest because he did a more exclusive ticketed private dinner at the shop the night before. Some of my favorite ‘cue included: La BBQ, Micklethwait Craft Meats Lamb Chorizo Kolache, Snow’s BBQ, Louie Mueller’s Taco, Truth BBQ, Texas Pie Company that served 4 kinds of pie in one boat!

unit 19 police saying they need to train police and army to arrest them, I believe the Australian army and police trained enough and ready to do what they like them to do but there is dirty secret behind unit 19…to keep it open for ever.I have no idea why UK and US police went direct to unit 19, why they didn’t work with the federal police or direct with the commissioner since they came to Australia, I believe they are not police and they came here to protect the other four Australian police in unit 19 after they started to be known to everyone else by doing nothing more than spying big names and organizations, ***I was and still victim to the local police, as you see Thomas and his three friends were officers in Liverpool police station, that is why they told UK police to handle the whole investigation about corruption to Liverpool police, now Liverpool saying there is no end to what they are doing and they need years and years to end it, unit 19 is not a police station to be used for unlimited investigation, if they like to stay here for years and years without arresting anyone they have to find solution for me and my children now, why they didn’t realize since they started they will take tens of years to investigate corruption and why they didn’t try to find solution for us since 2003, they turned my life to hell there is no privacy or freedom in my life, they control all my life, they spying me everywhere 24 hours a day to satisfy the criminal Steven and Nick, its hell …there is no connection between me and what they are doing in unit 19, refusing to involve me in any matter they isolated me dealing with me as hostage, refusing to arrest Steven or to do anything to get me out of this hell, I am very respectable, educated and religious person I was Accountant & Tax Consultant in Australia and Finance Specialist & Auditors in my country, Steve and his family destroyed my life, they didn’t like me to get any job for long time.My two children very educated and respectable two men, both of them have master degree and both of them in very good positions…why no one cares about us trying to protect criminals like Steven and his family, who exactly behind Steven and behind unit 19 police corruption… Of course, I can’t move from Liverpool without arrangement with unit 19 police for our safety me and my children, in year 2008 formal prime minister Mr, Kevin Rudd bought two flat units for me and my children, but I have no idea who took them or where they are until now, as I heard Mr Thomas which he is leading investigation about corruption took them for himself, at this time the plan was to move from here to the new flat unit with a few honest police from unit 19 to be far from the local police because most of them working with unit 19 and with the criminal Steven Maxwell, that is why I couldn’t get any justice until now, investigate where is those two flat units and why Thomas took them for himself…as I heard they are in expensive area…I am in hell here, I am really very sick from the Gas smell in my home days and nights, thousands of people from police and government with huge from the public watching me days and night in my home for years now, its clear conspiracy from them all …  I will give you very quick idea about some from unit 19 people; you all have to know who is managing and directing unit 19, to see who from between them all will work for justice to be done for me and my children, or who will arrest Steve or anyone from their list which they are talking about it since 2003, (1) the mean four police in unit 19, formal police officer Mr Thomas with another three retired police came to unit 19 in year 2003 only to investigate and arrest the criminal Steven, they all over 70 years old, Thomas was the one helped the criminal Steven to use my sister in law in court trial in year 2002 to pretend she is me, that is why he connected Steven crimes by unlimited and unrelated investigation about corruption to hide his corruption saying he will never allow anyone to arrest his friend Steven, as you know Steven was arrested in year 2005 because he used my sister in law in court trial to pretend she is me to revenge from his half-brother Dr. Campbell to stop him from marrying me, officer Thomas was behind this conspiracy and helped Steven to escape from Australia after Liverpool court sacked him from his job as registrar, now Mr Thomas seriously ill, but he wants to destroy me with everyone else before he dies.(2) the formal police deputy Mr Nick Kaldas, after he retired from his job as deputy he moved to next door block, works very hard with UK and US police to satisfy Mr Thomas and Steven’s family to return him to his job as deputy or commissioner, after he retired he was applied for better position in the United Nations he wanted Mr Thomas to make everything easy for him to get it, he is in war with me believed that is the only way to get what he wants through Steven and Thomas with UK John, Nick also, seriously ill, he says he will force me to go to the hospital to donate my heart to my brother in law, as I know Nick Kaldas has a huge health problems in his liver, kidney and lunges, that is why he pretend he will force me to donate my heart to my brother in law which he arrived to Sydney a few months ago and he also seriously ill, Nick Kaldas and unit 19 police and public became like a wild animals in unit 19 out of control, as there was no law or other police and government to protect me and protect all Australia from them all, Nick Kaldas wants me to donate my hear it means he wants to kill me…to take my organs to survive because he has many organic diseases, he doesn’t like to die, wants to be commissioner or police minister….!!!(3)  as I said there is four police officers from UK, one of them his name is John working very hard to fabricate everything to close unit 19 without arresting anyone working with Nick Kaldas and Thomas also to protect the criminal Steven, of course nothing for free, there is huge secret behind all unit 19 police in general and behind UK police in particular, they have very strange behave, if you ask them to arrest anyone they panic and scare, until now I have no idea why they are here, saying the queen and princes William and Hurry sent them, but if they refusing to end their investigation and will not arrest anyone why they sent them, they attack my children also John went to my ex-husband asking or forcing him to re union together again by force to close unit 19, of course to be easy to kill me. (4) the second UK officer his name is Ben, I have no idea what exactly he wants from me, as I heard he asked unit 19 police to force me to marry him to take me to UK with him to close unit 19 without arresting anyone, of course I refused because my life in danger here, that is why he is very angry and wants to destroy my life. (5) The third UK officer Anthony wants to stay in Australia, he went to Steven’s family in unit 21 asked them to remove the spy cameras secretly from my home to say there is no cameras in my home and there is no connection between unit 19 police and me, and now one torturing me or anything else, they like to stay in Australia for ever under the name of investigation about corruption without arresting anyone, just to spy people and know everything about corruption and taking huge wages for doing nothing, another officer came from UK after the other three officers, he is Indian back ground I am not sure about his name maybe (James), he wants to fabricate everything as I heard he is very aggressive man, unit 19 became business to anyone to come to corrupt as they like and pay them huge wages, without even investigating who they are, (6) Another police officer from US his name is Dave, refusing to return to US, also he is very aggressive man, all UK and US police doing nothing insist to stay in Australia refusing to arrest anyone, no idea why they all here if they will not arrest anyone, but who sent them, everyone wants to know, urging the queen with US president with NSW and Canberra police and government to investigate what secret behind all those people all what they are doing here, protecting criminals torturing and humiliating me use Gas to kill me …working hard to close unit 19 without any justice and escape from Australia without arresting anyone or to stay here forever, all unit 19 spying each other trying to spread any news they hear.(7) the criminal Steven’s family sister and their uncle living in unit 21, but they stay the whole time with unit 19 police; they can’t hide any secret from them, they dealing with this matter as they were commanders not criminals, in general all police unit 19 can’t hide any secret from anyone even from the public, if you arrange anything secretly with them they spread it immediately trying to find anyone to stop them, top of barbarism in unit 19.(8) there is many from our community from Coptic priests and bishops, with the Egyptian ambassadors from Sydney and Canberra, Steven and some from unit 19 have team only here to bribe people, they bribed all to work hard with all the above people to fabricate everything, to work with them against me to keep me isolated, our Coptic bishop Daniel with Fr. My Two-Week Vegan Test Drive

*Disclaimer: I’ve been eating honey, which is technically not vegan, throughout the two weeks.

After watching What the Health two weeks ago, I was totally totally disgusted by meat. I certainly don’t agree with everything they said, or even a lot of what they said, but I’ve always known the meat industry in this country was pretty awful, so I decided not to eat meat for a while. Then I thought why not take it a step further and go totally vegan, just for a two-week trial run and see how it goes. I kind of decided this about 11am, after I’d already had a vegan breakfast, but I didn’t take my weight or have time to get any blood work done. I emailed my amazing sister-in-law (She and my brother-in-law were totally vegan for a while and now try to eat vegan at least when they’re home and cooking for themselves.) to get some recipes and tips, and she went above and beyond what I was expecting with a ton of recipes, great advice, and some of her favorite vegan blogs to follow (I will include this information at the bottom of the blog.).

A lot of people think they’ll be “starving” if they follow a vegan diet, and I expected to be more hungry than normal, but I wasn’t at all! I was a little hungry when I got home from work, which I usually am, so I had a handful of pistachios before going to the gym, but I never felt hungry or deprived at all yesterday.

A lot of people also expect to experience more gas and bloating with all the added vegetables and beans, but I did not experience a difference during my first day.

I weighed myself this morning at was at 120 (with clothes). Will do the same at the end of the two weeks. Blood pressure around 9am was 97/66

Breakfast: Plain soy yogurt with fresh blueberries, chia seeds, and a drizzle of honey, gala apple

**One of my clients brought in a back of salty snacks because she thought she was getting cheddar flavored, turns out it was jalapeno cheddar, so she brought them to me because she knows I love hot foods, and she hates them. I can’t eat them because of the dairy in the ingredients :( **

Lunch: Vegan bowl with brown rice, half an avocado, salsa, black beans, and half an orange bell pepper

Dinner: Cheese-less pizza! It’s not as bad as it sounds - it’s actually quite good! I ordered traditional crust with pineapple, and the waitress didn’t even look at me funny when I ordered it without cheese, which I had totally prepared myself for. I had to say no to my fiance’s birthday cake when we went back to his parents’ house to celebrate his birthday :(

Day 4:

Breakfast: Vegan biscuits and gravy

I used my recipe for 2-ingredient biscuits, which calls for self-rising flour and heavy cream, but I subbed cashew milk. They didn’t turn out as well as when I’d used heavy cream, but they were fine with the gravy. I used my normal gravy recipe but subbed cashew milk for regular milk and used Morning Star sausage patties the I ran through the food processor to crumble them. After looking at the package, they patties were made with egg whites, so again, not 100% vegan TECHNICALLY, but for my purpose of doing it, I figured I could get away with it.

Lunch: Peanut butter sandwich, handful of almonds, and a Larabar

Dinner: More Cheesecake Factory salad and some pretzels

Breakfast: Smoothie with half an avocado, ½ cup blueberries, ½ cup coconut milk, and half a scoop of vanilla protein powder; gala apple

After work snack (about 5pm): pretzels and salsa (yeah I know it’s a weird combo) and some almonds

Dinner: Yet again more Cheesecake Factory salad; this time I added more garbanzo beans and balsamic vinegar; coconut ice cream bar for dessert

Lunch: Vegetarian burrito from Q’doba (flour tortilla, brown rice, black and pinto beans, roasted chile cord, salsa roja, guacamole, and shredded lettuce)

Blood pressure: 96/41

After work snack: tablespoonful of peanut butter; snapea crisps

Dinner: Homemade vegan vegetable soup (vegetable broth, V8 spicy tomato juice, cabbage, yellow squash from my grandma’s garden, seeded jalapenos from my friend’s dad’s garden, and green beans from my garden)

First day off of vegan diet: A huge piece of cake my *future* mother-in-law made for my fiance’s birthday that I’d frozen for this very day :) I didn’t even wait for it to completely thaw, and it was DELICIOUS!

My response to What the Health‘s claim that vegan is the only way to go is this: yes, a vegan diet is healthy because mostly you can only eat plant-based whole foods. You are very limited in snacks because so many traditional snack food contains dairy and/or eggs. A lot of desserts and breakfast pastries are also a no-no on a vegan diet, so there go a ton of calories a lot of non-vegans are getting on a daily basis. Therefore a person on a non-vegan diet who then makes a lifestyle change to become a vegan is very likely to drop weight as he or she will be cutting a lot of calories because their diet will be limited. The person will also likely have better blood work results and feel much healthier 1. Because he or she will be getting more vitamins and minerals because they will likely have to increase their intake of fruits and vegetables, 2. Because that person will end up having to switch out a lot of processed foods for whole foods,  and 3. Because he or she will likely lose weight.

My final thoughts on my two-week vegan test drive are that a vegan diet is totally doable, but it definitely has its challenges, especially when out to eat or eating at a relative/friend’s house. I never felt more hungry than I normally do, and I felt the same during and after my workouts. I also never experienced a difference in bloating/gas during the vegan test drive. I did not experience a significant weight change or notice a difference in my blood pressure (I’ve been monitoring it throughout the two weeks but not always recording it).

While it is a doable diet, it needs to be done right, and those following a vegan diet, especially strictly, need to make sure they are getting all the vitamins and minerals that are essential to our health. It is very important to learn which veggies, legumes, and grains, when mixed together, provide a complete source of protein, and sometimes it may be necessary to supplement with protein and/or certain vitamins (including B12). It is AMAZING how many processed foods and snacks are made with some form of dairy. I had to say no to a lot of my favorite snacks, even chocolate, because of their ingredients.

For me personally, I can see how it would be hard to follow a strict vegan diet for an extended period of time. I struggled with cravings for ice cream and my favorite snack foods that were out of my diet because of dairy. The cravings were worst when I was hungry and/or bored, and I also think my brain was telling me I wanted these foods because I knew I couldn’t have them. My fiance is not into going vegan, and we eat with his parents (also not vegan) a few times a month, and it would just be too difficult and not worth it to me (I don’t have any religious beliefs that restrict what I can eat) to permanently become a strict vegan. That being said, I will likely maintain a mostly vegetarian diet, as I’ve never been a huge fan of meat, and after What the Health, I’m even less of a fan. I will still make some of my favorite vegan dishes just because I like them, but I won’t be strict about it. Plus I’m really excited to dig into that piece of my fiance’s birthday cake that I stuck in the freezer for myself when my two-week test drive was over!
