Breeding is fun, until it isn’t

A blog post today! It’s been a while, isn’t it? I haven’t been very active recently besides reblogging here and there. Even my influential sires series has been neglected. 

The reason for that is well, it’s breeding season! My favourite season of the year, perhaps. 

Breeding season in The Netherlands is hectic. There are stallion inspections, stallion shows, mare inspections, foal inspections, and of course, foaling and inseminations. Every week there is some kind of event that has an impact on the breeding season of that year. 

The system of approval in Europe is a good invention if you ask me. It becomes a vicious cycle of sorts; with an approved stud your foal gets (better) papers, papers have meaning in turn. With papers having more meaning, people find them more important and it becomes less marketable to sell a horse without papers, in return making it less attractive for people to breed without papers and therefore studs contributing to ‘backyard breeding’ less desirable. In the end, far less horses are kept as studs without needing to be so: if your stallion isn’t good enough to be approved, the majority of people just geld them for ease of keeping. 

There are some downsides, of course. I don’t always fully agree with the reasons why a stud doesn’t get approved. If you look at the KFPS for example, their gene pool is limited and they often are quite picky over things such as small white markings. Those stallions often do also get gelded, which limits the genetic diversity possibly even more. 

So why are papered horses so important? It simply makes it easier to track the history of your horse. Backyard breeding still exists here, you can never really eliminate it. However, the amount of poorly bred horses without any medical background is really a lot less. Of most horses, their background is known and recorded, family lines are thoroughly picked through and it’s easier to match your mare to a fitting stud if this much information is available on both your mare and the stallion you want to use. 

To use an example in KWPN breeding: certain lines are known to pass on difficult personalities, such as Jazz, Gribaldi and more. You are aware of this when you have a mare out of these lines and the choice is up to you if you want to put another sensitive line on her or if you want to breed a more easy-going foal by matching her to a line that is known to pass on a good, workable character.

But besides character, I would say the main upside is simply just medical. Papers with a pedigree doesn’t necessarily make a horse better or worth more, but what it does do is give you a complete rundown of their medical history. If you notice a lot of horses having soundness issues from a certain line, it’s safe to say that this line is passing something on you want to stay clear from. In Friesians, this is perhaps the MOST important aspect of breeding. Given all the genetical issues they already struggle with, you want to be sure you’re trying your damnest to breed a healthy foal.

Our mare, as an example, has eczema. We manage to breed healthy foals out of her — DNA tests confirmed and everything — simply because my family only matches her with sire lines that show no sign of health issues frequently passed on. She is DNA tested and so is the sire we used.

But sadly though, this doesn’t always guarantee success. Like I said, breeding is fun until it isn’t. Our mare gave birth to a beautiful young colt a few weeks ago, perfect as he looked. An improvement on his full sister in personality, long legs and a strong body. It’s ecstatic.

However, that didn’t last very long. After not being able to poop at all, he was rushed to the nearest clinic. They were supposed to flush him and we’d have him back. That would unfortunately never happen. Despite being about a week past her due date, our sweet mare had given birth to an incomplete foal; his bowels found no connection to his anus, and therefore it would’ve been impossible for him to live. They did what was best for the colt and euthanised him that same day.

Now, we have a beautiful, lively Dutch Warmblood filly as an orphan by her side. She accepted her immediately. The orphan unfortunately lost her mother quickly after birth. In some ways, it feels like it was meant to be. She is black, just like our Friesian, with long legs and a sweet character. It’s still bittersweet, though, as at the end of the day she won’t stay with us. I’m not going to watch a sister of Syb grow up; I’m not going to be able to train her in the future. And ultimately, our Uk knew she lost a baby. He was euthanised by her side and she stood by him calmly until they removed him and introduced Pup. At the end of all this, we’ll have empty hands and a mare with one less baby.

It would’ve been so perfect. A full, healthy sibling to Syb. But it wasn’t supposed to be. And that’s where breeding can be tragically sad.

Deux de l’Ain

Les Aindinois vont par deux. Francis Rigon et Jean Dumont ont en commun d'avoir 80 ans, de résider dans l'Ain et d'avoir participé au Tour de France 1969. Né en Italie, Francesco est naturalisé en 1964 ; après un parcours de coureur amateur il commence une carrière professionnelle en 1969 avec l'équipe Frimatic-De Gribaldy où il fut équipier de Joachim Agostinho. Son fils Franck est président du Comité Départemental Olympique et sportif de l'Ain.

Jean Dumont est né à Ambérieu. Il se distingue dans les courses contre la montre en amateur, au Grand Prix de France et au Grand Prix des Nations amateurs 1964. Il intègre en 1965 l’équipe professionnelle Peugeot - BP- Michelin et ses porte-drapeaux, Eddy Merckx, Tom Simpson et Roger Pingeon né lui aussi dans l’Ain à Lagnieu. Il totalise cinq participations au Tour de France de 1967 à 1971 dont une 16 ème place en 1969.

Vandaag mocht ik wederom een combinatie redden van alle zadel ellende en zo de week goed afsluiten. Op aanraden van vriendin Estelle schakelde Shelly mijn hulp in voor haar en haar sensibele 12 jarige merrie Flo v. Jazz X Gribaldi (en dan nog Jet Set D X Rex Magna)…. en nee mensen, Shel is niet levensmoe, maar krijgt het niet zomaar cadeau van Flo’tje.💪🏾😜 Na behoorlijk wat zadelpijn en zadel ellende is Flo behoorlijk veranderd. Ze is veel gevoeliger en geeft het ook snel aan als er iets niet optimaal past. En gelukkig heeft ze in Shel ook een fijne eigenaar getroffen die daar naar luistert. We begonnen met de zadelevaluatie en namen de maten op van Flo voordat we begonnen met passen. Shelly en haar moeder hadden voorafgaand aan deze afspraak hun huiswerk al goed gedaan. We namen verschillende merken mee en deze Frank Baines beauty met Cherry patent mock croc accenten was hét droomzadel van Shelly. Ze durfde niet te hopen dat dit zadel mee zou komen. En toeval bestaat niet, het paste direct op Flo alsof het er voor gemaakt was. Een klein beetje bijvullen en het lag als gegoten. En door dat geweldige TreeClix systeem aanpasbaar in de toekomst zodat ze er een flinke periode mee vooruit kunnen. Voor Shel was het echt een verademing om eindelijk comfortabel en pijnvrij in het zadel te zitten. Flo is je dankbaar lieve Shel en namens team Akash Saddlery heel veel plezier en geluk gewenst. We zijn trots dat we een kleine bijdrage hebben mogen leveren in het vinden van eindelijk een passend zadel voor jullie beiden.
