In anticipation of the full moon, local residents and visitors of Greywood have begun to notice an alarming increase in creepy crawlies throughout town!

Where are these bugs and what can be done?

In Town, residents may be pleased or horrified to find that various insects have suddenly bloomed in population and are invading homes, businesses, public spaces and even your plumbing and vehicles. It seems nowhere is safe from these pesky bugs! There are occasional swarms in the sky of beetles and flies, earthworms are crawling out from the dirt and littering the sidewalk, even crickets and other insects seem to be persistently spawning inside nooks and cracks of homes and businesses despite best attempts to keep them out. Residents are encourage to contact local pest control services, witches for magical fixes, or attempt to clear out, relocate or eradicate the insects from their homes and businesses themselves! Whatever feels IC for your characters!

The Outskirts are experiencing the same, though perhaps more concerning are the sightings of something large moving through the woods - giant worms a few feet long burrowing beneath the earth and car sized beetles felling trees are flooding the news channels being broadcasted all over Greywood. If your character frequents the Outskirts or has made one of the rare homes there their own, be safe and mindful of this! Your wellbeing and safety is endangered even more than usual.

Deeper in the Greywood Forest, where the fog is thick and the town seems to melt away, residents should be extremely careful. There may be something even more dangerous lurking between the trees. Not only are the bugs still swarming en mass here, but giant bugs are more likely to be encountered, along with other giant magical insect creatures. Residents are encouraged to run if encountering one of these creatures, or for the brave and able, can attempt to encourage one of these insect beasts back into hiding or defend yourself by any means necessary.

Characters who are employed with the Greywood Fire Department, Sheriff's Department or Hospital may be alerted and contacted for assistance regarding managing the increase of bugs or aiding for any potential injuries caused.

How long will this last?

This takes place in-character from March 25, 2024 to April 8, 2024, after which we ask that no new threads be made but current and ongoing threads are okay to run until completion regardless of how long it takes. Participation is optional.

Can my character fight a giant bug?

Yes, they certainly can! Be sure to plot properly with your writing partner regarding action or fighting scenes and ensure any potential injuries, minor or severe are consented to with all parties and be sure to add any trigger warnings appropriate.

What kind of giant magical bugs are there?

Use your imagination! Feel free to have it simply be a giant version of a normal bug or use some kind of existing giant insect creature from fantastical mythology. If you have a more specific thing in mind and aren't sure, please contact the mods.

Is this part of a bigger plot?

This will be considered a stand-alone environmental world state change and not part of a larger plot arc.

EPILOGUE

It was deadly quiet deep within the Greywood forest, between rows upon rows of pine trees, their needles silver on one side and green on the other, the giants the forest got its name for towering high towards the moonlit night sky. Until a tremor shook the earth above their roots. Nocturnal critters startled, spreading out and running off in all directions, spooked. The silence was broken by a rumble of ground as it cracked open, a giant fissure tearing the grassy earth. Rancid stench of sulfur filled the air, low hanging branches and dry bushels around the site spontaneously catching on fire.

Out of that large fissure, a hand crawled out, grabbing for the jagged edge of the hole to pull a body up. What first emerged were long horns curving up and back, a ball of flame suspended between them. Fiery red eyes blinked to take the world in as the creature climbed out, flaring nostrils taking in fresh air, so sweet, so soothingly cold, unlike the stinking vapors emanating from below. The creature’s body was charred black, like a dark, rocky crust of a lava stone with deep gashes revealing a pulsing liquid fire beneath, down its arms and across the creature’s back. Under its hooved feet, dry grass caught on fire with its every step, thin, naked tail whipping behind it.

It spread its arms to the sky and condensed into a cloud of thick, black smoke, losing form, dashing forward and weaving between tree trunks with dizzying speed like a shadow. Miles ahead, a winding road cut through the forest, a large ‘Welcome to Greywood’ sign reflecting off headlights of a passing car.

An obnoxiously off-key voice sang over the turned on radio, chewing on a mouthful of Cheetos.

“Another hard day, no water, no rest. I saw my chance so I got him at last. I took his six-shooter, put two in his chest. He’ll never say a word no more. The devil got him good, for sure.”

Watching the road, the man bobbed his head as he drove, until the headlights caught a figure in their beam and the car came to a screeching halt, almost colliding with whatever stood on the way. The man inside the car cursed loudly, the bag of Cheetos spilling all over his lap. As he grumbled and looked up, and all words were swallowed back down.

A pair of blazing red eyes were staring back, the grin below them sharp and blackened. Its form blurred, bursting into black smoke as it lunged forward, through the windshield. The man in the car barely had the time to whisper a quiet ‘fuck’ before all of the openings on his face were invaded by the black smoke, pushing its way in easily no matter how much he trashed and struggled behind the wheel. A few seconds later and it was over. The man recovered from a coughing fit and looked up in the rearview mirror, a red glow within otherwise dull, brown eyes dimming down to nothing. The car rumbled to a start again, the radio hiccupping to life again.

“The devil’s gonna make me a free man, the devil’s gonna set me free... So come on Lord, what you’re waiting for?”

Evacuated people had been cooped up at the University for almost twenty-four hours and after spending the night barricaded in the building, it was pushing into a second day. Exhausted, frightened, kept on their toes by the raging storm outside that wreaked havoc upon the town and was tearing it apart, people had slowly started to retreat for the night, unaware that a miracle was about to happen.

While all were sleeping, resting or just simply not paying attention while hiding indoors, the rain and the storm gradually passed - the water receded, leaving the streets and roads and flooded homes and businesses mostly dry. As a matter of fact, not only had everything dried off pretty quickly over night, but all damage done by the storm was taken back as if it had never happened. Greywood’s Historic Library had a roof again. Acacia Heights Country Club seemed like it had never been struck by lightning or had caught on fire. The Sapphire Sea was calm again, its lake shores clean and no longer pushed by raging waves. Everyone’s homes and businesses returned to their previous state, as if touched by some miraculous magic. How was everything fixed, no one knew or saw…

People will be expecting to come back to a town in ruins but what they came back to was just the usual places intact, only slightly wet from what now seemed like a very regular rainy night. No properties ended up being damaged after this event after all, and all residents are free to notice this and marvel at it!

Unlike the previous day, by noon of the second day the sun would be shining brightly, making it slightly warmer than usual for this time of the year, drying the last bits of wetness and puddles off the streets and roads of Greywood town. An order would come from the Town Hall to release the evacuated people held in the assigned buildings back to their homes, so everyone would be allowed to leave by lunchtime aside from anyone admitted to the Hospital, if the staff had estimated that they’d need to stay for observation and treatment longer.

By the end of the day, the winding stairway leading underground would be barred off by the SET team, access to anyone denied. As the volunteers and other members of rescue squads and authority checked out and explored the University’s perimeter, they would notice that a decrepit winding staircase leading up to nowhere had appeared in the middle of the University’s back courtyard lawn. Only three people out of everyone would be able to recognize these staircases. This site had also been taped off and closed for public access until further notice.

EPILOGUE

A harsh wind hit all of those still remaining nearby the portals, murals and the sarcophagus on the second underground level below Greywood Supernatural University. It was like something insanely large had flapped its wings and therefore slapped them all with an intense wave of air but it was only for a moment before it stopped with a shuffling rustle of what sounded like fabric or maybe… feathers. If any of them would turn to look, though it would soon be very hard to miss, the great white wings that had been displayed there all along were now… gone. All that was left of them were a couple of large, white feathers, still fluttering down softly until they've completely fallen to the ground. The great whirlwinds raging above the treetops of the Greywood forest retreated, dissipating into nothing but a light breeze. The Sapphire Sea grew silent again. Flooding water was slowly starting to retreat, like a tidal wave going back to where it came from, trickling away into earth and between cracks in the ground. Sharply outlined beams of sunlight peeked through the thick, gray clouds above town, illuminating the devastated buildings into patches of beautiful light. The rain calmed down to a light drizzle. Above the town of Greywood, a splendid arch of light appeared, a magnificent rainbow display. And as it formed, a large winged figure could be seen, ascending up to the heavens until its form was swallowed up by clouds, never to be seen again. "And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul There walks a lady we all know…" "And she's buying a stairway to Heaven."
