Tara Bodhisattva(多羅菩薩)
I acquired this beautiful statue more than 15 years ago. I was told that it is very old, dating from the Ming Dynasty. Although it is considerably damaged, the gilding is still partially intact. And it still conveys the Buddhist craftsman spirit and the wishes of the people of that time.
This is a Green Tara of Tibetan Buddhism, a beautiful young girl. She was born as an incarnation of the tears shed by Kannon. If someone is suffering, she runs there and saves them. In Japan, she is revered as the Tara Kannon or the Tara Bodhisattva.

In a mother’s womb were two babies. One asked the other: “Do you believe in life after delivery?” The other replied, “Of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.” “Nonsense,” said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?” The second said, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat with our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now.” The first replied, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after delivery is to be logically excluded.” The second insisted, “Well, I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.” The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover, if there is life, then why has no one ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery, there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.” “Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.” The first replied, “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists, then where is She now?” The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by Her. We are of Her. It is in Her that we live. Without Her, this world would not and could not exist.” Said the first: “Well, I don’t see Her, so it is only logical that She doesn’t exist.” To which the second replied, "Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focus and listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear Her loving voice, calling down from above." ~ Útmutató a Léleknek #buddha #compassion #mother #enlightenment #love #dhamma #chenrezig #ommanipadmehum #baby #motherlove #buddhism #medicinebuddha #omtaretuttareturesoha #greentara (at Kathmandu, Nepal) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChMY0NGsFPW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I haven’t posted on this page for a while but as a diversion between archiving old sketchbooks I thought I’d join in with this sineater drawing challenge based on a set of folk prompts through October/ (thanks @sineateruk for this inclusive game ). I was encouraged, (nay provoked!), by my friend and fellow artist @spells_against_civilisation to play along. I’m desperately short for time with my workload so I may not manage every day and many of these will be echoes of old work like this today - my lino block of Forest Tara, a female Buddha who represents active compassion. I love that when male Buddhas are represented they are generally shown with legs evenly crossed but Green Tara, Bodhisattva of active compassion, is shown with one foot already down to step into the suffering of the world. She is an embodiment of the Wisdom of compassion and nature. After that is today’s actual drawing (which may be part of a series of very fast, intuitive, un-researched ten minute mawkish and poorly observed mixed-media drawings to add to this project. I’m not sure who she is or what she represents but she seems to be casting runes under a tree at night; (as one does…) #sintober2022 #sintober22 #wisewoman #wisewomantradition #tara #greentara #foresttara #linocut #linocutprint #bodhisattva #sineateruk #drawingchallenge (at Liverpool) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjL0OfiMX1J/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Green Tara is a female Bodhisattva in Tibetan Buddhism. She is revered as a deity who embodies compassion and provides protection, assistance, and guidance to those who call upon her. Green Tara is often depicted as a seated or standing figure, dressed in the garb of a Buddhist monk and holding a lotus flower in her left hand. Her green color symbolizes her connection to nature and her ability to heal and soothe the natural world. In some depictions, she is shown with seven eyes, representing her all-seeing awareness and her ability to help in all directions. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Green Tara is considered to be a manifestation of the wisdom of all the Buddhas and is associated with activity, success, protection, and overcoming obstacles. Devotees typically recite her mantra and perform rituals to invoke her blessings and protection. Net Weight: 5Kg 7 years old. 100% handmade in Nepal by local artisans. . . #greentara #goodfortune #compassion #statues #antique #woodstatues #innerpeace # https://www.instagram.com/p/Cohn-Ddjxix/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
