because those cgi dragons are EXPENSIVE. this is a million dollar production that employs thousands of people. HBO is a company.
unfortunately, the corporate heads at HBO aren’t renaissance era aristocratic patrons, funding art for the sake of art. they are businesspeople, they are expecting the millions of dollars they put into the show to come back to them and then some. general audiences like protagonists they can root for. you can criticize them for how they did it but acting scandalized they did it in the first place is, dare i say, stupid?
and weep and wail all you want, but Daenerys Targaryen keeps the lights on and the bills paid at HBO headquarters and they know it. There’s a reason the Targaryen spinoff got greenlit instead of the Jon Snow one. There’s a reason house of the dragon opens with “172 years before daenerys targaryen” and not “172 years before Jon Snow aka Aegon Targaryen” “172 years before Stannis Baratheon” “172 years before Tyrion Lannister”
and the absolute lack of critical thinking towards book rhaenyra truly astounds me. if you were paying attention, maester Gyldan is a sexist FREAK. He talks about how “nubile” six year old girls are. I’m not saying book rhaenyra was a saint and it was a smear campaign, but come on. you’re convinced she had zero redeeming qualities and spent all day either eating or having sex. everyone talked big talk about how they understand how George is ✨criticizing the patriarchy✨ and then proceeded to swallow rhaenyra’s portrayal hook line and sinker with zero critical thinking involved.
oh no, did HBO try to turn an unlikable figure into a likable one general audiences can root for after the reception to their last “women be crazy” episode crashed and burned? i’m shocked. shocked, i tell you.

#elena of avalor#esteban flores#chancellor esteban#this gifset is entirely about his little sailing/archeology/adventure outfit#that's why it has pride of place in the middle#realistically i know that he is really not THAT much more underdressed than in any of his other outfits#but to me; he is still in a delightfully shameful state of deshabille comparatively:#his neck exposed because he has *gasp* no cravat and has unbuttoned his shirt two whole buttons#the yellow sash belt that clearly has no other purpose except to remind us that his waist is snatched#no longcoat to partially cover his hips and the back of his legs? the brazen audacity. I need some pearls to clutch#moment of silence for all of the cute little potential esteban fits we never got to see on the show#at the very least; we were owed a nice little Navidad look in the snowbound ep#maybe a nice green jacket and/or one with little embroidered poinsetta accents to match elena's dress?#a carnaval fit would've been gr8 too; even gabe of all people got one (tho esteban still has more outfits than him overall so it even outs)#i would say that esteban should have a dias de los muertos outfit too (maybe matching francisco's)#but that would require the writers actually putting him in said episodes to begin with#i mean; i get it#it's not like he has any lost loved ones that he might hypothetically want to remember on day of the dead--OH WAIT!!!#i mean word of god is that he's visiting his parents' altars off-screen; but it would've been nice if we could've seen this once#even if he's just shown briefly in the background#also i *hate* that the shuriki era uniform looks so good on him#i mean she's still a monster and was definitely a hell of a boss to him#but dang; the woman has quite the sartorial eye#and you'll never not convince me that her chancellor looking excellent in black#isn't the entire reason the palace guards wear black too#she knows how to coordinate a retinue#esteban flores: assigned goth at conquest#poor thing#lucky (or is it unlucky?) he carries it off so well

After sleeping, I do think it’s fascinating to look at how the Blue Egg being removed from play changed the dynamics of EVERYTHING.
Much as they yell about Honor, Green went in with intent and were first to directly deal damage to the Blue egg. Blue team was severely undermanned and despairing as their egg was taken all the way down to below 10% before Roier got away — Etoiles stopped when Aypierre ragequit, but Roier did not.
Blue Team fell into despair. Blue Team gave up.
And shortly after that, the Egg was considered dead and removed from play. The remaining players reassigned.
You can see a shift in certain Red Team members when they all realise the Blue Egg is actually gone - assumed dead. They know which team was attacking it, and it is not hard to assume in the heat of battle that Green were the ones that took it out. (And for all their talk of “just a statue”, it sure was Foolish and Phil - fathers to the two eggs combined into Blue’s stone egg - that landed the retaliating blows on the Green egg.)
When the whole event was done, Green accused Red of killing the Blue egg (even Niki, from Blue, said she’d assumed Cellbit had landed the killing blow, which he fervently (and correctly) denied). Red Team made it clear they had not. And both teams seemed to pause with that revelation. There’s an awkwardness there, before they quickly move on. No one really talks about it after that - or perhaps they did. I didn’t catch the remaining hours (the curse of needing sleep on a work night), so perhaps it was raised in conversation.
It does make me wonder, if Blue hadn’t given up, had reinforced their 10% health remaining egg and camped furiously to fend off people approaching from below, if they’d refused to give into the despair the Eye craved, that things might have gone differently.
(There’s something very sad about Chayanne and Leo’s egg being given up on by the people who know them but aren’t their parents, how one half of their parental pairs were once again absent when they were needed most, who’s presence could have (potentially but probably not) made a difference if they’d been there. Add to that Roier doing the most harm to the egg that partially represented his little sister — he’s been so certain the Eggs were all dead anyway, so he didn’t bat an eyelid at hitting Blue’s egg with a weapon named for his son..)
It makes me wonder how the game might have changed if they all had stuck to their verbal agreement and protected all the stone eggs with no attacks against them.
We’ll never know. But I do wonder.

breaking my silence
team bolas had the most advantage the first week of purgatory
#qsmp#soulfire had 3-4 constant people and a dream. badboyhalo and tubbo lost sleep clutching those two wins alone#green gay ninjas had the disadvantage of the rules while playing in the morning and had almost no people who streamed later in the day#which led to them having to stay on much later than they do and just barely clutch two wins after the rules were made more fair#bolas had teamwork and friendship and over four people who managed to come on everyday (usually in the afternoon too)#and they were extremely funny#getting flashback of etoiles staying on the qsmp for five hours and getting over 70% of the bar only to be defeated at the last few hours#all that hard work for nothing#had anyone noticed that soulfire actually ended up having less players on daily than bolas

reds current main advantages seem to be how many of them log on at the same time [it’s been consistently all the actually active team members, stream schedules permitting] and how late they stay on which counts for a LOT because of the contract points. plus the power of friendship and effective strategising has been really helpful. idk how much the other teams are doing but red is communicating and planning a Lot. cellbit even mentioned they weren’t going for the win today, it just kinda Happened because of how things ended up lining up. which is insane
so yeah i hope green gets a win soon so that everyone has at least one but from what i’ve gathered from the dash green is sort of all over the place so. :[
