For @archduke-enver-gortash- thank you again for the patience, Romeo, and for letting me play with Zeke! This was originally for OC Kiss Week, but ultimately was only finished this weekend. I had a ton of fun working on this. I got lost in about four different kinds of nature sauce just planning it, as you can see...
Extra doodles and process stuff below the cut <3
The height difference kept cracking me up. Some silly doodles in honor of all the times I thought "this can't be a comfortable pose" while sketching.
Initial concept work. On god the novel cover comment is said with full affection for the design of childhood favorite talking animal books. The pencil in the first one is also being used to censor "Bhaal"- I'm too lazy to take a new pic, that's from showing a friend who hadn't finished the game.
Sketch -> lines -> most of color
Pre-fill version of the final thing. The white has its own charm, and it was hard to commit to one or the other.
Despite what the initial list had, here are the actual final wreath components. As intended, at least.
Zeke: queen of the night flowers, ferns, moon vine, short-tailed shrew bones (I just really really like venomous shrews), cockroaches, foxglove
Kas: yarrow, wheat (and grass), barn swallow wing, acanthus (of the unrealistic illumination kind), California poppy, aconite/wolfsbane, giant silkworm moth

Balaerra looks at you in disbelief, scoffing at the question. “Zeke? He is pathetic. That is what I think of him. He believes himself so much better than others, yet then falls so easily under that pig’s boot. And for what? I can not see anything of worth being gained from that ridiculous… partnership of his with Gortash. If you could even call it that. Even he realizes it, yet he goes back anyway. Fool.”
She goes back to working on her potions, believing the conversation to be over. As you continue to stand in front of her, she rolls her eyes. “Fine. I will admit he is quite intelligent. If he calms himself down long enough to use that intelligence is another matter, of course... His tenacity in following a lead no matter what is also…admirable. I suppose.” She struggles to say the compliment, annoyed at being made to say it.
She lets out a frustrated sigh, looking to you. “What does it matter what I think of him? What is the point of these questions? He will self-destruct soon enough. Best to stand out of the way so you don’t get caught in it. Then when it’s all over, we can be happy that he at least took that pig he is so attached to down with him.”

pt2 to the being gortash's equal thoughts. as jaheira says, the primary reasoning behind his offer before the coronation is that he needs someone to bask in his glory. but the sheep he herds are not the subject here. he needs someone worthy, an equal, to witness his tyranny. someone who truly understands his reign, the terror he inflicts, the justice he executes. being beheld by another spurns gortash to new heights--to grasp, to conquer the things that are meant to be his. (meaning his equal is actively making gortash want to ruin them even more by just. watching themselves be ruined. amazing. totally not a doomed fate at all. :/)
