@ astonmartinf1 A special lid for Lance’s home race, featuring QR codes linking to places close to his heart. 🇨🇦
Mont-Tremblant – the town in which Lance’s love for outdoor sports was formed. In Winter, he’d ski and snowboard.
Lester’s Deli – a local deli which serves the best smoked meat sandwiches in Montreal. Lance has eaten at the family-run fixture since he was young.
SH Karting – the karting track at which Lance first starting competitively racing go-karts. Where his love for the sport began to take shape.
The Bell Centre – The venue Lance would go to watch his hockey team – The Habs (Montreal Canadians).
Lower Canada College – The junior school Lance attended. Where he met his closest friends, some of who are at the race this weekend.
Park – Lance’s favourite Asian restaurant. A must-visit for Lance’s trips home to Montreal.
Gibeau Orange Julep – a fast food joint that Lance would hit after hockey practice. Lance’s home-town guilty pleasure.

I did it. I finally did it. Almost on a whim, I hopped in my car in New York City and headed straight to Montreal to visit Gibeau’s Orange Julep. I made it from the Big Apple to the Big Orange in just under seven hours and arrived with just minutes of daylight to spare, the final rays of the sun giving the orange a glorious glow. And I was back early the next day – blessed with brilliant, severe clear skies – for more photos and more orange julep! Yep, the drink recalls an Orange Julius – which I almost sampled at a legacy DQ I visited in Quebec. (My post about it is coming soon!) But no, orange julep is different. The recipe of Gibeau’s hearty concoction is a family secret. Aside from orange juice, theories abound about what gives the julep its unique taste and consistency. Pectin? Egg whites? Powdered milk? A hint of vanilla? Whatever is in this concoction, it’s downright delicious, and as I write this, I find myself craving it and planning my next visit, which happily will be in August. So how did the Big Orange get here anyway? We have Hermas Gibeau to thank, who began selling the frothy family drink in 1932. A small orange-shaped stand soon followed, and they reproduced, a seasonal sight across the Saint Lawrence River Valley. In the mid 1940s, the first Big Orange, smaller than today’s but just as iconic, went up, only to be demolished less than two decades later for the expansion of the Autoroute Decarie ahead of the 1967 Montreal Expo. His business felt the squeeze, but Gibeau’s business would not be reduced to a pulp. He opened an even larger orange in the mid 1960s, the one you see today. It remains an outpost of American roadside sensibilities north of the border. Classic car nights are held here, and until the early 2000s, rollerskating car hops would deliver your julep, hot dogs, poutine and other casse-croûte to your car’s window. Nostalgia has always been king here. In 1977, the Montreal Gazette wrote that this was a scene fit for Fonzie himself! Well, “Happy Days” are here again – they actually never went away – at the Orange Julep. #retrologist (at Gibeau Orange Julep) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfU8LyVrO42/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Petition to Get “The Orange” by Wendy Cope Printed in Big Letters on Gibeau Orange Julep
The day before I flew home to Vancouver, my boyfriend, Will, asked me where I wanted to go for something sweet. Before he could finish asking his question, I told him I wanted to go to Gibeau Orange Julep, Montreal’s infamous fast-food joint and landmark, most known for their orange creamsicle in beverage form. It is my most beloved spot in the city. The colossal, circular, tango-painted restaurant is located in the middle of the highway, and can easily be spotted from the stairs St. Joseph’s Oratory, or on a plane when you’re about to take off or land in Montreal.
The drink itself tastes like the first day of Spring in Montreal. The first sip is when the snow is all melted and the clouds in the sky all hide to make room for the sun to make its solo appearance. When the drink is half full, the concrete is finally visible and every few inches there’s picnic blankets full of Twisted Teas and people at the park. The last few droplets is when white squeaky-clean white sneakers are out, and the trendiest, most colourful outfits are no longer obstructed by big, dark puffer coats.
To me, Orange Julep is a symbol of friendship and adventure. The first time I went was the first time I ventured out of my university’s bubble, it’s right next to the SPCA where I adopted Shrimp, if my friends and I wanted to raid a for-profit thrift store I would treat myself with a sip of the Julep since it was right across the Value Village, and if I was venturing out of the city to go up north to a friend’s cottage I’d make a little pit stop to the giant tangerine.
Fittingly, “The Orange”, a poem by Wendy Cope, perfectly encapsulates my feelings for Orange Julep, as it’s a piece of poetry about appreciating the beauty in the mundane and importance of sharing these moments with friends. The highway monument might be just a fast-food joint to some, but to me, it holds a special place in my heart because I’ve shared a drink and meal with every person I love at Gibeau Orange Julep.
“I love you, I’m glad I exist.”

To start, despite the presence of white space between the letters and words, the viewer can clearly make out the semi-circle form, a result of experimenting with the notion of space and white space to generate both legible texts to describe the area and a recognisable shape. The semi-circle shape, combined with the orange colour of the fonts, clearly refers to the restaurant Gibeau Orange Julep, a well-known roadside attraction in Montreal's Mont-Royal neighbourhood. By juxtaposing the vivid orange round forms with the cool toned quadrilateral and sharp lines for the other elements, the Orange Julep reference becomes the focal focus of the design while also emphasising its significance in the neighbourhood as a Montreal symbol.
Second, the round shapes are exclusively utilised to convey the importance of food to the area, that makes it a gastronomical centre with a varied range of cuisines and unique meals. The use of perspective produces dynamism, which is a key component in indicating movement. Furthermore, the names of restaurants and their menus are written inside the small figures that float around the composition, providing a sense of rhythm. It also suggests movement or action, which the viewer's gaze follows unconsciously. It can be a factor of liveliness, as established by shape psychology, which argues that the circle is positive and represents harmony, something that is undeniably evident when looking at the Orange Julep nightscape.
Finally, its distinctive design and structure in a real-life modern setting interrupts the monotony of everyday life, allowing pedestrians and customers to engage in an experience that will entice them to return. Identifying a popular attraction that also acts as a restaurant and coincidentally depicts the intersection as a gastronomical centre leads people to associate the location with Orange Julep, where they may or may not opt to stop by on occasion. Using the Decarie highway, which extends beyond the painting, and a sign that states a street name in the foreground, the observer can better comprehend where the Big Orange stands in real life.
