For the Ghost ask game: 9, 14, 20!
-@ghoul-slime
EEEEEEE OKAY LETS DO THIS 🖤
9. If you’ve ever been to a Ritual, what was your favorite memory of that night?
I haven’t been to a Ritual yet, sadly. I honestly got super into Ghost right after they had like three Rituals in my general vicinity that I absolutely would have driven to. One was the night before I left for DragonCon and my friend went and they got rained out and she was miserable. I felt so bad! But I’ve seen so many videos of the Rituals on TikTok that I feel like I’ve been to a Ritual if that makes any sense 😂 Birthday kiss with Swiss and Phantom is definitely up there as a favorite moment I’ve seen!
14. Which era of Ghouls are your favorite?
Prequelle Ghouls save me. Save me Prequelle Ghouls. Oh my god I’m obsessed with that era and it kills me inside knowing I will only be able to experience it in videos. But I will happily watch them over and over because have you SEEN THOSE OUTFITS?! My brain melts every single time. Especially when it’s just the like, black button up and suspenders AND THE TIES? I need an exorcism.
20. Which Ghoul/Ghoulette is your favorite?
I started off an Aurora girly, actually! A friend went to a Ritual and shared a video of her bouncing around playing her tambourine and I was like “hey who is that I vibe with their energy” and was introduced to Aurora. I even crocheted a mini Ghoul and put a friendship bracelet with her name on it and carried it with me to DragonCon!
And then, he came along. Okay, it wasn’t like super dramatic or anything like that, but Rain stole my heart and I’ve been a Rain girly ever since. Do I remember specifically when it happened? Nope. It feels like I’ve always loved him. But he really is everything to me. I love him so much. I love seeing art of him, reading fics about him (mean Rain make brain go brrrr), seeing photos and videos of him. Something about him is just so comforting and right. So, long story short, Rain is my favorite Ghoul 💙
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for indulging me bestie I love being able to ramble for a bit about this silly little band that I love so much 🥹

Ok @kwstarr here they are!!!
Thorn also known as Bright Eyes is originally this and here’s some stuff on them and their family!!!
Tumblr media
Little things about everyone:
- the entire family is made up of Eldritch creatures, Rich is a full blooded, Pallah is half blooded. Auz is 2/3 elditch 1/3 witch and Thorn is half eldritch and half human :>
- Thorn is adopted! They were left on the families doorstep when they were a baby and Pallah and Rich immediately fell in love
- pallah works as an arch mage under the dark queen and is very proud of their children! Seriously they are super intimidated but if given the chance she WILL show photos of his kids.
- Rich is a stay at home father most of the time, as a full blooded Eldritch he doesnt have a super permanent humanism form so he actually spends most of his time chilling in the void
- Auz is studying to be a teacher at a college so hes majoring in sigils and spells
- Thorn is studying to become a mage under the Dark Queen so their focus is summoning magic, transformation and dark magic
-Fun story! Pallah and Rich met when she accidentally summoned him and Rich ripped their arm off.
It was funny I promise because Pallah just went: “man. Well anyways-*grows another arm*”
Rich:….you…I will continue to annoy you now
Rich didn’t know how to deal with his feelings
- Auz is a deer eldritch! He can transform into a fucked up deer and mess with humans! :DD
- Thorn is a bat eldritch! They transform into a lot of different bat forms and people think they’re a vampire(thats why I made them Bright eyes lol)
-they’re all a surprisingly wholesome family and like they’re all evil but its just. Adorable man.
- they go to a college similar to monster high I guess but more prestigious! Thorns best friend is a slime named plum, Nate the Frankenstein and Forrest the ghoul(their lovely in redacted. Why? Because I DONT wanna make new characters thats why.)

Halloween Creepy Crawlies Love the MOD
Tumblr media
  Beyond Military Training
As Halloween approaches, it's not just ghouls and goblins that haunt the training grounds; some of the UK's spookiest, yet crucial, species call these areas home. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), responsible for enabling military training, also works diligently to sustainably manage habitats for the nation's most vital wildlife.   A Unique Responsibility The Ministry of Defence (MOD) oversees 169 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) across the UK, with nearly 20,000 hectares alone on Salisbury Plain. The MOD's unique ownership of more SSSIs than any other landowner, including renowned organizations like the National Trust, RSPB, and The Wildlife Trusts, results from the fact that most MOD sites have preserved themselves from agricultural intensification and the use of herbicides and pesticides since the end of World War 2.
Sustaining Biodiversity in Military Grounds
DIO's ecology and environmental engagement teams strive to ensure that wildlife and military needs coexist harmoniously on the Defence Training Estate. Among the eerie yet fascinating species that inhabit the Salisbury Plain Training Area are:   The Bloody-Nosed Beetle A peculiar insect, known for its defense mechanism of secreting a blood-red liquid when threatened, roams the grasslands and hedgerows across the training area.

Flickr.   The Wasp Spider A creepy hybrid of a wasp and a spider, the wasp spider has been known to spook even the bravest soldiers during training exercises. It's typically found in the south, but it is steadily moving northwards.   The Viper's Bugloss This plant is common across Salisbury Plain, providing ample nectar for pollinators. Its spotted stem resembles a snake's markings, and it plays a surprising role in seed dispersion.   The Elusive Nightjar A bird with excellent camouflage that's hard to spot in woodlands, the Nightjar has been monitored through bird ringing on Salisbury Plain.   The Ferocious Devil's Coach Horse Beetle Known for its predatory nature and its ability to deliver a painful bite if provoked, the Devil's Coach Horse Beetle curls its abdomen like a scorpion when threatened.   The Devil's Bit Scabious A pretty plant with lilac-blue flowers, the Devil's Bit Scabious earns its name from the way its roots appear, as if the devil has bitten them off.   The Mother Shipton Moth Named after a 16th-century witch, this moth features creamy-colored markings resembling the witch's face, and it resides in the ancient grasslands of Salisbury Plain.

Conservation and Military Coexistence
As the MOD and DIO focus on military training, they also embrace the importance of preserving these unique species. With initiatives like the Raptor and Owl Nest Box Project, the military contributes to wildlife conservation.   Balancing Spooky and Vital This Halloween, the Salisbury Plain Training Area is home to not only military exercises but also a remarkable array of wildlife. The spooky yet vital inhabitants of this region serve as a reminder of the importance of coexistence between human activities and nature.   Sources: THX News & Defence Infrastructure Organisation. It’s finally October and that’s exactly when ghosts, goblins and ghouls come out to play!
It’s been spread around the internet that CNET Korea will be hosting a fun Zombie Night to celebrate Halloween this month! Any resemblance to the world-famous movie ‘Train to Busan’ is not mere coincidence. Inspired by the flick’s tematic, the event will be held on the last Saturday of the month, October 26th. People all over the country will gather in front of Seoul Station in Yongsan at 8 p.m. and walk together to a delimited area nearby where different activities will be taking place. Everyone is free to join, there are not entrance fees and they are only asked to arrive properly dressed as zombies or in their chosen costumes.
The organizers prepared different zones where people can have different and fun experiences. Participants may visit photo booths with their friends to keep the moment in a photograph or even stop by make-up booths where professional artists will helping them become one of the zombies themselves. For those looking for a chance to use their logical brains and face a challenge, there will be two temporary escape rooms waiting for teams of six to unravel the mysteries. Joining forces with the event, some cafés and food trucks in the area will offer special and Instagram-worthy Halloween themed menus.
Participating in one of the activities gives them life bands (one for each attraction visited), but beware of the staff members in disguise zombies ready to steal them and make you one of them! Whether you’re very strategic or just athletic enough to end the night safe and sound with at least one life band, you get the chance to spin the wheel and earn prizes that go from candies and slimes to amusement park discounts and concert or movie tickets.
Can you survive? Ready, set, go.
* Both trainees and rookies are allowed to attend this event (including DE:CODE members)!
AND HERE GOES A LITTLE REMINDER: Halloween is a lot of fun, but some aspects of it can be triggering to our members. We kindly ask everyone to look into this post and use trigger warnings when needed, especially in SNS posts and edits so everyone can have a good time and enjoy the event!
To earn +2 POINTS TO DISTRIBUTE AS YOU WISH, write a four-post thread or a 250+ words solo about your muse enjoying one of the activities. For +2 CHARISMA POINTS, write a four-post thread with a muse you never interacted with. For extra +2 CREATIVITY POINTS, post a gifset or edit of your muse’s costume. Please tag all your posts related to the event with#rkzombienight and have them up by midnight EST at the end of October 31st, Thursday. Threads may be continued after the deadline, but after October 31st points can no longer be collected. Have fun!

The Sinners and Their Saints Chapter 24: Slime Part 1
Five months later...
"And so good people of Maine." The new mayor said to the crowd of people watching him speak. "Thanks to your votes and to the committee kind enough to clean up the damage caused five months earlier our city is once again safe and well built. And as your new mayor I promise you I shall ensure that it stays that way."
The crowd clapped and cheered at his words. Unaware that underground a strange and mysterious reddish-black slime was bubbling up. Then out of no where the porthole from the sewers burst open and the slime came rising up and crashing down, flooding the area. The people screamed and fled for their lives. The slime began to flood the area and other parts of the city. At first the mayor sent several clean up committees to fix it but this slime seemed to be alive. But that only marked the beginning of trouble, random fires were started, domestic animals were acting wild, and some of the people were randomly attacking and killing others. Rational doctors suggested insanity but this was becoming a regular basis and lots of people were blaming the mayor.
"Good lord." He said looking at the chaos outside. "What have I gotten myself in to?"
"If you ask me a great big problem, a great big supernatural problem." He turned to see an old man walking in from the shadows.
"Ah! How the hell did you get in here?"
"I broke down the door."
"Security!"
"Don't bother I knocked out your body guards."
"What do you want? Why are you here? You're not apart of the angry mob who wants to tear me apart are you?"
"No I'm the person who may have the answers to your problem."
"What are you talking about?"
"Mayor Talbot do you believe in the supernatural or the paranormal?"
"What do you mean?"
"Devils, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, witches, ghouls, monsters, ect."
"Of course not! That's ridiculous! Those things don't exist."
"Believe me Mayor Talbot they're as real as God."
He tossed him a book. It had a brown, leather cover that was slightly torn.
"What is that?"
"If you doubt my words read that journal, my brother wrote it. Before he died in war he began studying paranormal creatures and wrote them down in his journal. There are photos and information that prove everything I just said was true. If you read this and you still don't believe in it then good luck with the angry mob but if you do start to believe then call this number."
He tossed him a slip of paper with a number written on it.
"Ask for Father Gardner, he'll know what to do, see you around."
"Wait a minute, who are you?"
The old man stopped at the door and looked at him.
"Pines." He said before leaving. "Stan Pines."
...
After the incident with Jasper being destroyed and humanity being saved from extinction you'd think the people of Maine would've been more grateful to the exorcists and vampire slayers but they weren't. You see during their jobs of exterminating monsters they had unintentionally caused some physical damage to the city. The former mayor was enraged along with everyone else in the town and they insisted that they pay for what they had done. So the former mayor sued both the Van Helsing Organization and the Holy Order and they threatened to have each member of both groups arrested if they ever tried to hunt monsters again. So the Van Helsing Organization was shut down, the Holy Order became a regular church, the vampire slayers had to be fired and look for the new work and the exorcists had to only do clergy work.
Manny and Steven had to go into hiding because they had exposed themselves as a devil and a vampire which caused the people to fear them. They were kept underground in the Van Helsing Organization and weren't allowed to leave unless it was an emergency. If they were ever caught then they would be arrested or taken away by the government for experimentation. For Steven he didn't mind because he was very easy going and understanding but Manny was restless and stubborn, he didn't like being locked up and treated like a freak. Not many had figured out that Dipper was a werewolf so he walked around free but he wasn't allowed to transform. He left with Pacifica to continue in their search for evidence against Gideon. Of course Connie got a job working as a dancer for a club, not a stripper club just a regular one where people could just enjoy dinner and a show. Aside from being good with a sword, Connie was a great dancer so she got paid well and she roomed with Sister Sadie at the Holy Order. Frida had decided to try and make it on her own, so despite objections from Manny she relieved him from his guardian job by removing his belt and left town to do missionary work.
Father Gardner tried to convince her to stay with him again at least but she insisted that she was tired of people always looking after her and that she wanted to take care of herself. She was sixteen and technically not Gardner's daughter so he couldn't stop her from leaving. But he still sent Dusk and Dawn to follow her, spy on her, and report to him if anything is wrong but not to let her know they were there. Solomon was becoming stir crazy, once his organization was shut down he had to start working as a plumber which he found boring and unsatisfying in life. Sister Nora just continued to run the church like she did before all this happened but from time to time she would pay Solomon or Gardner a visit to find out how things were going. Father Gardner went back to the days of a regular minister but he would still continue keeping an eye out for any paranormal dangers, law or no law he knew they had to be stopped if they attacked. You can imagine his surprise and joy when Mayor Talbot called.
"I appreciate you coming here Mayor Talbot." Father Gardner said to the man following him into the building.
"I must admit Father I'm still a little skeptical about all this but with my city on the verge of destruction I guess desperate measures need to be taken."
"Yes I've seen what's been happening to the city and I've been wanting to put a stop to it but unfortunately that order the former mayor made the judge sign has prevented me from doing anything."
"Well if you can help fix this city then I'll tear up that order."
"Worry not Mayor Talbot, I can definitely fix this problem. You see what you have is a paranormal problem therefore you need a paranormal solution to fix it. One can always count on well I can't say logical but an answer at least."
"What do you mean paranormal solution?"
"What I mean is there are things that go bump in the night Mr. Mayor and we bump back There is a team of highly trained professionals who have taken out more demons, vampires, and other monsters than anyone else I know of."
"So just to be clear you do believe in it?"
"Of course don't you?"
"Uh...I'm not sure."
"Figured you'd say that. Not many politicians are open to the illogical. Let me give you the 411 on our team and a little warning for ya they may not be what you expect at first."
He followed him into his office and sat down. Gardner opened a filing cabinet and pulled out five files that contained articles and profile pictures on each team member.
"Your leading team are six teenagers?"
"Don't let their age fool you, especially the boys they're actually way older than they look."
"Who are they?"
He handed him the profile pictures and began reading the articles.
"Manny Rivera the devil, hot tempered and dangerous, yet he's a big softy underneath but don't tell him I said. He can change from human to devil, grow wings, has heightened senses, shape changing, and prokinesis. He is flame retardant due to being half devil and is immune to holy defenses such as holy water due to being half human. Word of warning don't make him angry."
"Wait he's a devil?"
"Don't interrupt." Solomon said. "The rock hard giant with fangs and a pacifist complex is Steven Universe the vampire. He can fly, is by far the strongest being God has placed on earth since Samson, and can see in the dark. He is immune to sunlight and does not need human blood to survive however he's deathly allergic to garlic so we can't have Italian food anymore."
"Hold up a vampire?!"
"Please let me finish. Then we have Dipper Pines our werewolf. Highly intelligent, chooses brains over brawn every time. Can transform into a wolf, has the strong senses of a canie, is incredibly fast, and can communicate with wolves. Very smart but tends to give in to his animal urges."
"Like what?"
"Howling at the moon and peeing on the floor. Apparently he's not housebroken."
"Uh....Okay."
"Frida Suarez the nun. Looks like an angel and has a voice to match but her personality is nun too holy, pardon the joke. Gifted with healing powers, medical remedies, mediumship, and excellent aim. She's a top exorcist and every unholy creature's worst nightmare. I should know I trained her myself from the time she was twelve."
"Trained her to do what?"
"Why shooting demons of course."
"Shooting? A shooting nun?"
"I did say she was nun too holy again pardon the joke. The spitfire with a timid heart is Connie Maheswaran the vampire hunter. Agile, quick-witted, reflexive, and determined. She is one of the best swords women this city ever knew and has become a master at hand to hand combat."
"Never thought a woman could do that."
"There lots of things in this world most people don't consider. Last one would be Pacifica Northwest the jewel witch."
"Northwest? As in Preston Northwest's daughter?"
"Yes and you are forbidden from breathing a word of this to him or the media if you do we'll find you and erase your memory of it. Anyway while she is an aristocratic heiress with the demeanor of an ice queen, she has the ability to track, summon, and control jewels and precious metals which she can use as weapons and defenses. She's not easy to work with but she's proven to be very helpful."
"With all due respect a lot of this makes little to no sense to me."
"Hmmm..Maybe you should meet some of them. Follow me."
He followed him down a stairway into a basement.
"So far only two of them are here, the rest of them are away doing their own business."
They walked down a corridor of different doors then stopped at one. Father Gardner knocked politely on to the door.
"It's open." Said a voice on the other side said.
He opened the door and they entered an apartment with the usual furniture, supplies, and other things. The lights were dim, it had different radios playing different types of music, while several bats were hanging from the ceiling.
"Yeah he really likes music and he likes bats so sometimes he'll let them in." Father Gardner said. "Careful one of them might crap on your head. Steven!"
"Yes?"
"Where are you?"
"Up here." Just then Steven swung down from the ceiling, upside down by his feet. "Hello."
"Ah! I hate it when you do that." Father Gardner said startled.
"Sorry I just find it easier to think when I'm upside down."
"Come down here and meet the mayor."
"Okay."
He then dropped from the ceiling landing on his feet.
"Mayor Talbot this is Steven Universe, Steven Mayor Talbot."
"Hi nice to meet you." He said cheerfully shaking his hand and unknowingly applying a huge amount of his strength to his grip.
"You're crushing my hand." The mayor gasped.
"Sorry." Steven said releasing his hand.
"Whoa! That's a killer grip you've got there." The mayor said.
"Thanks I get it from my mom."
"Steven the mayor and I have something we want to discuss with you so can you please meet us in the staff room in an hour."
"Sure see you there."
"Great." They left his room and continued down the hall.
"Well he's not what I expected in a vampire."
"Well he is half human Mr. Mayor."
"I suppose but still don't you think it's a little risky leaving his door unlocked? After all he is half vampire."
"Yes but he doesn't drink human blood and he maybe strong but he wouldn't hurt a fly and he understands that he can't be seen in public so locking him up is completely uncalled for."
They arrived at another door. This was at the very end of the hall, was made entirely out of steel, and was locked by a code you had to put in.
"Now this one we have to keep locked up."
"What?"
"You'll see."
Gardner punched in the code and the door opened to reveal another apartment. Likke Steven's it had the right furniture and stuff but this one had some broken and burned stuff.
"Manny is a lot more restless than Steven and more hot tempered. He's sneaked out of here once or twice so we have to keep him locked in his room."
"Um why is some of his stuff broken or burned?"
"Sometimes when he gets real angry he'll smash some stuff or set them on fire luckily this room is flame retardant so we don't have to worry about him burning the place to the ground."
"Is he safe to be around?"
"As long as you don't make him angry."
"Don't you people knock?" An annoyed voice asked. Manny walked in from his bathroom. "Who's the guy in the suit?"
"Manny this is Mayor Talbot."
"Is this the guy who wrote that order saying I had to stay locked up?"
"No this is the new mayor and technically that order said you had to stay out of sight we chose to lock you up because you snuck out."
"I wanted to see her and maybe get some air or a good drink."
"You know that's not allowed."
"Ask me if I care? Anyway why is this guy here?"
"Well the city is having a problem and he is considering asking us to fix it."
"What's the matter? Cops can't help?"
"It's a paranormal issue."
"Not interested."
"Manny."
"Every time we help these people all they did was complain and now Steven and I have to live underground for the rest of our lives."
"Manny if we do this he might consider removing that order."
"And if he doesn't I will have wasted my time for nothing."
"Look just come to the meeting and maybe we can work out a deal."
"Fine but only because I have nothing better to do right now."

The Downward Climb: Plumbing the Depths of Lordran
This is a psychological essay about the lower geography of Dark Souls 1. It was originally published on Haywire Magazine last year. All the cool impressionistic photos that accompany the article were taken by Haywire editor Josh Trevett.
Tumblr media
Many folks have pointed out the world of Dark Souls resembles a map of the psyche, but little has been done to cartographize this terrain. If we begin with the basic premise that the hub world, Firelink Shrine, is the starting point of a psychological unfolding, then the next assumption is to see upward trajectory as aspirational and emancipating, and downward trajectory as reflective and inward. This latter leaden path is rarely the first one selected by the player, a little harder to find and more treacherous, but its symbology is quite rich. When the Crestfallen Knight of the Shrine mentions this direction, it’s with sardonic caution.
As in dreams, each successive layer of descent in Dark Souls indicates deeper and deeper domains of the psyche. The further down you go, the more fantastic the landscape becomes, and the more primal the mythological material. We shall look at these stages in terms of successive depth, but keep in mind that it is impossible to make progress in the game solely by going down. At certain points, one must take a break and reach upward for a while in order to plumb further down again. So this essay is structured geographically, rather than directly following gameplay trajectory – and while some of these stages can be skipped, they cannot be meaningfully reordered.
The expected path of descent begins in the township. The chosen undead opens a door and takes a long ladder down to the poorer part of town, where the houses are much smaller, and fires go unchecked. Thieves threaten to murder and rob anyone brave enough to walk through the derelict streets. This area is the “wrong side of the tracks,” where the undesirable things go: the criminals, the hungry, the desperate. As a psychic landscape, it is only partially unconscious. It still has order: houses, people, and a clear direction to follow. It lies in shade, indicating that it is on the threshold of escaping consciousness. The downward incline at this point is gradual, but clear. The people who live here are violent and not wholly integrated into the relatively civil upper undead burg, but are nevertheless part of the same city, acknowledged by the ego to be functioning psychic components.
The incline briefly plateaus in the chamber of the Capra Demon, who ambushes you in a tiny room with his rabid dogs. The player is cornered by relative realism – it as though they are trapped, ambushed, mugged – threatened by very “real” dangers. The discomfort and fear of navigating the psychological shadow is here at its most rational: projecting the fear of the Other onto real people in a community. The Capra Demon is a creature of Capricorn, which symbolizes the limitations of matter, and the business of the superego: obligation, societal order, infrastructure, systems which can empower or disenfranchise. Here is Dark Souls doing realism: a reasonable situation (turning a wrong corner in a bad neighborhood) is punished by a cruel and unfair encounter (dead end ambush with dogs). This battle is touted as a milestone in Dark Souls for its difficulty, and it is likewise a milestone in the psychological individuation process. Here you are confronted with the cold, hard facts: opportunist humans in a damaged and impoverished society. But you see that this is not the source of your suffering. And by overcoming the devil of external, organized materiality, you receive the key to the next challenge: the internal materiality, the personal body.
Tumblr media
The digestive tract, the toilet, and the sewer are all classic dream symbols of the body – in particular, the aspects of the body that inspire disgust, revulsion, rejection. So we can see how the sewer is a more sophisticated and yet more blatant metaphor for repressed psychic contents. This is where Dark Souls begins its toilet humor. Remember: the Capra Demon represented a “breakthrough” moment. For the first time, the player goes underground, burrowing into a solid wall, and gets a sense of how huge is the house of unconscious material. This revelation has reframed the unconscious as an elaborate, dark maze – though it retains the tight passages of its previous form. The tight passages indicate, as above, the trepidation and constraint one feels when exploring this uncomfortable side of the psyche.
Here we have the animalistic scramble of hungry hollows as they await their supper from the mother-figure of the butcher, who intimidates with large castrating cleaver. Directly below the mess-hall there is a small thick pool (is it mud? waste? grease?), which we briefly trudge through in the tightest quarters yet. Thick beams support a low ceiling. Dogs outmatch your agility in the soup. This is perhaps the first time that a weapon with an overhead swing is useless. Claustrophobia and inertia emerge as a theme and a threat. On the other side of this small but intense pool, a genuinely optimistic native of the swamp is trapped, inert, in a barrel, and rescuing this fellow allows you to learn pyromancies. The main encounter with fire in the previous stage was a useless hazard; here, it becomes our ally, Laurentius. It is our first vague indication that the birth of fire lies somewhere at the bottom of this unconscious realm. We accept this pyromancer as our friend (we recognize the part of ourselves which is native to the swamp) and in doing so we are given our first opportunity to make use of fire, the animating force which created and consumed the world.
The sewer is obviously not in great condition: wads of slime and blocked passages suggest an ailing intestinal tract, or that the digestive role of the psyche is in disrepair, disrupting fluid communication to the more primal unconscious material which lurks below (symbolized by Izalith et al). If we hunt around we find the disturbing revelation of the preacher presiding over a throng of rats. Let’s take moving downward to be moving into the past, into that which is buried. So to find a holy man / father figure commanding a group of rats which he empowers against us, on a rampart overlooking the arena of confrontation… there are a number of ways to interpret this, and I leave you to your imagination.
The son (pyromancer) and father (trident) figures are minor scenes, skippable fragments of trauma in our memory-maze of abjection, but the mother recurs to us throughout. Julia Kristeva introduced the idea that the original object of abjection is the mother, because that’s the first form from which we differentiate ourselves. “We must abject the maternal, the object which has created us, in order to construct an identity.” This is a major keynote of this dungeon. In addition to the butcher, the image of the mother is given to us as a big mama rat, and by leaping creatures with frightening, boob-like heads. Literally they are “basilisks”, the sight of which immobilizes the player (but the frog is also an interesting comparison, as it is a classical symbol of Venus, feminine beauty – except here it has been corrupted).
Tumblr media
At bottom, we encounter the image of the mother rephrased as a malformed dragon. It is a great gaping and tooth-filled yoni. This is a particularly revolting and primal form: the “devouring mother” who threatens to overwhelm the player, consuming our being back into her body, into dormancy and total dependence, like Laurentius in his barrel.
As others have pointed out, this creature is a descendant of the everlasting dragons. Those dragons, who exist outside of time, symbolize the Mother in her highest conceivable state: the matrix of creation from which all phenomenal experience is derived. The image of a dragon represents a cardinal pattern within that matrix, currently unmanifest within the primary sphere of our experience. The Gaping Dragon, this distant descendant, has been corrupted within the psyche of the chosen undead by a poisonous relationship to the Mother. If the Capra gave us the keys to the body, we find that the body’s memory extends back to the point in which it was surrounded by the Mother. And here the Mother still lurks in a dank chamber, transformed by repression and lack of sunlight into a corrupted state – a one dimensional feeding machine. So, like many dragons of mythology, it must be slain so that the process of self-understanding can proceed. The key the dragon gives us brings us to the first wide-open unconscious arena.
Those who are not fortunate enough to live between the damp stone walls of a pestilent sewer must make their home below it: on rickety scaffolding above a valley of shit. Blighttown is the scourge of Dark Souls, its repugnance reaching a gameplay-disrupting level. Here, by a large leap, we reach a finer metaphor for the repressed psyche: the dark cave. We again retain the dimness of the above levels, and the constraint of passage, but now it is far more dangerous, situated upon a treacherous structure which could give way at any moment. The lattice of understanding we have built for this level of consciousness is pathetic. An undead dog runs in a hamster wheel to power a continuous elevator, in mockery of the inventions of the surface/ego. The ladders which further our descent are hard to see, but resting at this precipice is not possible due to the endless intrusion of bloodsucking mosquitoes.
The style of enemies have changed dramatically: rather than typical desperate and confused hollows, we have obstinate dart blowers and ogres. Already these beings have mutated through prolonged drought of humanity, but the situation gets worse as we go down. The infested ghouls are contaminated past the point of human, consumed by hunger, madness, rage, and soon we find horrendous semi-humanoid “cragspiders”, beings who are hopelessly malformed and animalistic in their behavior.
Tumblr media
These creatures follow us to the very bottom of an enormous shit-valley, where at last the arena opens wide, and again we adjust our understanding of the repressed psyche to a more sophisticated and expansive scope. This is a moment where the attitude toward the repressed changes. No passages restrict our movement here, only the muckiness of the omnipresent poisonous waste, a metaphor for depression and torpor. In the distance we see an enormous spider nest, which summons conflicting feelings. It inspires fear and foreboding, but the idea of “nest” also suggests, for the first time, home. Things have gotten a bit brighter down here, and the white spider’s nest faintly glimmers almost like a castle in comparison to the sludgy wasteland. It is an indication of beauty and architecture buried in the abominations of the deep unintegrated psyche. We are reminded there is something here to retrieve.
Like any well-designed boss, Quelaag is philosophically emblematic of the environment. She is a grotesque sight: from the waist-up she is a naked woman, and from the waist down she is a gnarly, fiery spider. The mythological motif of a feminine being with the lower half of a beast is a common one (mermaids, deer-legged or chicken-legged demons). It describes a complex in the psyche which hasn’t fully formed into autonomous realization, but is partially “embedded” in the undifferentiated psychic environment. I’d prefer to ignore the fanservice intro to this battle, but it does reveal a few key things about the character: her relation to desire, and her incongruous placement in the general thematic palette of Dark Souls. In addition to the cutscene, it’s her general design — her character model, moveset, and item drops — that portray her as someone who has stepped out of some other, more sensational franchise.
She and her 6 sisters are something like multivalent capitulations of anima, the otherworldly spark of inspiration. Quelaag herself is the base corruption of artistic impulse into superficial thrills: a creature that is half hot girl, half horrible beast, and when u beat her u get a badass sword. The Fair Lady is the atrophied, unappreciated anima. She is an even more feeble archetype than Quelaag: she is the most helpless of all damsels, incapable of speaking in common, sickly and immobile, easily deceived and killed – she is at the mercy of the player, essentially. The only other sister with a name is Quelana, who is encountered before the spider’s den, inconspicuously resting against a wall in the filthy basin. This is the only sister who retains her sanity, and who becomes your ally, teaching you the most powerful flame sorceries in the game. Her spells are primordial, essential fire – long predating the invention of pyromancy, which is to say, before intellect and science sought to control this raw, libidinous power. She is difficult to see in the dark swamp, and won’t appear at all unless the player has reached an eminent level of mastery over fire.
The arson fire of lower undead burg marked our initiation into the downward climb, and became more important in each successive layer of subconscious darkness, and the flame took on more complex forms. The lad we rescued from the sewer represented indirect knowledge of fire, passed on through cultural traditions, and was our first integration of this animating power. This next plateau introduces us to the sisters, beings born from the flame, and if the player is able to engage with Quelana, they receive a higher integration: explicit tutelage from a master, from a daughter of fire.
Tumblr media
After Quelana and Quelaag, the brief womb of the spider nest, we are born again into yet another renovation of the unconscious: an expansive hellscape. There is no sign of human habitation down here: no more semi-conscious undead or ramshackle structures, only ruins, monsters and mountains. To formalize this new chthonic threshold, we are given our robes of initiation – or rather, we seize them from under the nose of a giant, mourning beast. The Ceaseless Discharge is the sole son of chaos, and we find him looming over the corpse of his unnamed sister, which bears the robes. When the player takes these robes, Ceaseless attacks in a rage.
Ceaseless is raw, untamed energy, hastily crammed into a form that spews excess and emotion. In the lore of the game, he was with born with wounds inflamed by lava, and his sisters gave him an enchanted ring that kept the lava from hurting him. He “foolishly” dropped the ring and it sprang into a centipede demon – though the game suggests that he lost his entire hand in this incident. The player can wait for Ceaseless to get his injured stub-hand stuck in the cliffside during the battle, and then knock him off the cliff in a few hits – this is the most well-known boss exploit in Dark Souls. At first encounter, the player is overwhelmed by the unrestrained emotions in the deep unconscious – they are huge, ugly, intimidating, and dish out a ton of damage. If the player gives way to this intimidation, by keeping distance from this boss, the fight becomes much harder. One must either run up right next to the boss, or lure the boss to the gate and take advantage of the exploit. By doing the latter, we are taking this difficult and childish emotion and bringing it toward the surface. It is already crippled and nearly immobile, and once we see its injured hand (indicating its lack of strength and utility), we can trap it and conquer the beast. Only in doing so will the lava below harden, permitting our progress, because the “Discharge” has stopped: the malformed, unprocessed emotion has been listened to and released.
Now we see that we are not among nature, but among ruins; there was at one time an awareness of this psychic level, but it has been lost long ago. It is crawling with Taurus and Capra demons, foes that were at one time represented critical discoveries but are now found in multitude and will be conquered repeatedly. Lava burns the feet, and statues come alive, signifying that the psychic terrain itself has become hostile to your exploration, and boundaries have started to dissolve between enemy and environment. Here we can go no further until we have also gone Up. That is to say, one cannot venture infinitely inward without stretching the other way a bit. After the Lord Vessel is acquired in Anor Londo, we can return to the lowest levels of the mind, where form breaks down into undifferentiated soup, and we find the contamination at the heart.
Any lower than this and individual personalities are lost. The personal is replaced entirely by the archetypal as we seek a nameless witch. The placement of enemies is no longer biographically descriptive. The few NPCs who make it this far below are the most heroic, and have until now kept their optimism and idiosyncrasies. But they too find themselves overcome, and surrender to the ugly heart of nature, leaving the player with no model for a course of action.  At the same depth we find four legendary kings who are now indistinguishable as a single spectral force, and a barren lake of ash where the player becomes incongruous among the boundless silence. So when the Bell of Awakening is rung, a few floors above, after the defeat of Quelaag, it marks an important boundary. Perhaps not the moment of awakening, but the surrender of individual grievances, as to fully reckon the roots of Lordran’s collective sorrow. By the time we reach that bell, finding it covered and nearly immobilized by rotting spiderweb, we know first-hand why the Crestfallen Knight sits around Firelink Shrine, unwilling to make the descent.

All the Ghouls love me Halloween shirt
Tumblr media
The heat of the new season All the Ghouls love me Halloween shirt . of Game of Thrones has piped down and I understand that the premiere episode was quite underwhelming for a big part of eager fans. But however you criticize this tv show you know it is one of the best series in the history of small screen book adaptations.Because it has a very strong and loyal fan base, the merchandise endorsing it comes in all forms and shapes. So, apart from being fans of the cold-blooded intrigue and boobs, we are also fans of t-shirts (duh!) that feature, in an original way, characters, memes, or any other kind of design alluding to Game of Thrones. All the Ghouls love me Halloween shirt, hoodie, sweater, longsleeve and ladies t-shirt

And if you are animal symbol fan, you can also get a t-shirt with what can only remind you of the Game of Thrones direwolf.I hope you’re staying focused, given that we have reached Hump Day successfully. EVENT REPORT: Heating up with Anime Figures at Wonder Festival Summer 2019
Wonder Festival, WonFes for short, is the biggest figure convention in the world. Held twice a year (once in summer and once in winter), the festival is held for only one day at Makuhari Messe, just a short train ride out of Tokyo into the neighbouring Chiba prefecture. We sent our Japan Correspondent, Daryl Harding, to check out all the newest figures on show on the hot and humid summer day.
Out of the big anime conventions to go to in Japan – the others being Comiket and AnimeJapan – Wonder Festival was the only one I hadn’t gotten a chance to go to yet. Ultimately, I only really expected a bunch of figures in a room, but what I found when I walked through the door was a love letter to figures and the entire industry, with some of the usual anime fun as well.
    GARAGE KIT HALL
Walking in, I was greeted by one of Makuhari Messe’s halls, filled to the brim with tables and stalls set up with everything from Gunpla to figure painting, model creation, and so much more. While I would have loved to spend more time in the Garage Kit area, I quickly got distracted by the Wonder Showcase.
The Wonder Showcase had a huge booth of figures shown off in past festivals. Celebrating its 20th year, the booth had an array of figures that were both original and based off established series on display. Some personal favorites shown off here were Kitsunetsuki, Wakker, Fuhehe, and Land of the Lustrous character Cinnabar (picture below). That red hair is beautiful.
    COSPLAY AREA
Outside in the heat was the cosplay area. I was surprised by the lack of variety of cosplays and cosplayers at Wonder Festival; maybe it was due to a typhoon that was supposed to hit? Or maybe it was from the heat being unbearable. Whatever the reasons, due to the lack of cosplayers, the lines of the cosplayers that were there were too long, so I only got a few shots.
  Cosplayer @HCLI_JPN
Like the spectacular looking Sanji cosplayer above, who was inspired by the Indeed x One Piece crossover promotions, and looking very suave!
  Cosplayer @denden007
And this Yoko Littner from Gurren Lagann. While I thought her costume and gun were impressive, what was even more impressive was the full-size Lagann behind her. Sadly, I was not allowed to ride it.
Finally, it wouldn’t be a figure convention without some “dollers”, also known as kigurumi (roughly translates to costume) or animegao (anime face). I was able to snap this very photogenic Yugiri from ZOMBIE LAND SAGA. While I wasn’t able to get a name – I got a strong dame (no) when I asked – they were very sweet and even held my hands in thanks. A true Legendary Courtesan.
  INDUSTRY HALL
The main area of Wonder Festival is in Hall 2, where all the industry booths are. This is the area where you can see all the new figures being released soon, art installations, and even some, quite tasteless, World War II uniforms. All in all, though, this was the hal in whichl I spent the majority of my time.
There was no shortage of Evangelion love this year, with the franchise having its own booth and taking over others with figures on display and art installations. The Evangelion booth itself was blaring previews for the upcoming Evangelion 3.0+1.0 film, which included the 10-minute preview shown at special locations around Japan and Japan Expo in France.
The best figure on display here was the imposing Unit 01 running through the city (pictured above). Outside of the booth, there were intense displays set up recreating key moments from the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series, including when Unit 02 was being devoured by the Mass Production Evangelions (pictured below).
Figurama was showcasing the most spectacular of figures. The sheer scale and detail on the figures – well, they were more like dioramas, recreating pivotal scenes from the series Figurama had licensed – was out of this world. The Hellsing Ultimate diorama (pictured above), with Alucard shooting a Nazi from The Millennium Organization, was 67cm tall and just blew me away.
Around the corner from that was the Tokyo Ghoul diorama (pictured above), recreating the fight between Kaneki and Yamori from the series. At a whopping 63cm in height, it felt like the figure was taken straight out of the manga pages and brought perfectly to life. The craftsmanship of all the figures on show at this booth were just exceptional.
Ichiban Kuji, from Banpresto, brought an impressive array of figures to Wonder Festival this year. In Japan, usually the first-run of the figures are lottery only, and you can only see pictures of them when trying your luck, so being able to see the figures in the flesh was really cool, especially the upcoming Tanjiro and Nezuko figures from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (pictured above). Luckily for international audiences, you can buy them outright! Sometimes it pays to live outside Japan...
The vast amount of figures from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime made me so happy, including this adorable Milim and angry Rimuru figure (pictured above). It’s truly a series I’ve enjoyed, so seeing it well represented at Wonder Festival with so many different figures was great.
Bruno Bucciarati, from part five of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, has an upcoming fabulous figure being released, but shown off was a variant version that gives his Stand, Sticky Fingers, a beautiful blue sheen.
Dynamic poses from the Ichiban Kuji series are just one of the reasons they’re so popular, and the above figure of Luffy from One Piece showcases his free-spirited nature so well.
KDColle, KADOKAWA’s new line of premium figures that tell “A new story that you can take in your hand”, was also on display at Wonder Festival. KDColle were showing off some production figures that have yet to be fully realized, including the above figure of Subaru and Rem from a scene in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- in this gorgeous and detailed figure that I need when it's properly released.
All of the figures shown off in the new line were incredibly detailed with rich expressions, like the above figure of Mamako from Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks? I may not like her two-hit attack, but I love the work done on this figure.
The KDColle series also announced KONOSUBA -God's blessing on this wonderful world- figures featuring the trio of Darkness, Aqua, and Megumin in yukata. They match their respective colors in the traditional dress, and look absolutely adorable doing so.
Over at the Good Smile Company booth, they announced a whole range of dazzling Pop-Up Parade figures based off the characters from PERSONA5 the Animation, including Ren, Futaba, Makoto, and Akechi.
Continuing with the Pop-Up Parade series, the newly announced Garou figure from One-Punch Man was shown off alongside another Saitama figure (pictured above) in his casual hoodie. All the Pop-Up Parade figures I saw being shown off were really well designed, with the eyes on Saitama above showcasing the level of detail that went into his design superbly.
The Good Smile Company booth was also attached to a stage area that I was not allowed to get images of. They had some stage events during the day of upcoming anime, with some voice actors coming out and discussing why they’re excited for their upcoming series. One of the events I was able to catch was for the upcoming CHOYOYU!: High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World! TV anime series, airing in October. They brought out the group DIALOGUE+ to perform the opening song live on stage. The energy the girls had on stage was infectious and the song was enjoyable too!
I could go on and on about the amount of figures I saw during Wonder Festival, but then I’d be here all day. I was surprised by the amount of fun I had just looking at figures and being able to take photos of them. If you’re into figures (and you have A LOT of money to spend), then Wonder Festival is for you. It’s held twice a year in the summer and winter, so be sure to check the website for more details.

Went to the Syracuse ritual last night! @chumpacabra and I made it to the barrier on Dew's side, right below his platform. I'll post a few photos soon, but for now, here's a little bit of a recap:
-The weather was wild. Super windy and wet. The wind pulled the kabuki screen down immediately, and the stage had to be mopped periodically between songs, but it made for SUPER cool photos of Papa and the ghouls in the rain
-Rain and Phantom/Aeon were so absolutely attached at the hip holy shit. Every time I looked to their side of the stage they were playing together
-Cumulus and Aurora dancing together and blowing each other kisses on their platforms and being overall fucking adorable
-Rain grabbed Dew’s waist during the whammy bar thing
-SWISS/AEON HUG!!!!
-Looked like Dew kept doing the "call me" hand signal to some guy in the crowd(?). He did it multiple times, and it was one of the last things he did before he walked off stage
-Some sound or guitar issues at the beginning had Dew looking frustrated. Seemed like some sound issues overall, maybe because of the rain?
-Dew’s hands, holy shit. Would be perfectly satisfied to go to a show and just watch him play the whole time
-Papa said the " I'll take you out to the parking lot and do you all one at a time after the show" thing, but he said it was too cold and wouldn't want anybody to get sick
-Didn't see Cirrus at all (no Mummy Dust, rip) until bows :(
-Dew chucked a pick at me, it bounced off my hand and flew into the gap between pit and stage, but an absolute angel of a security guard grabbed it for me. Sir, I owe you my life.
Overall it was fucking amazing and also thank you to the person in line who gave me the Sodo bracelet!!
