Black Church Rock . . It’s another classic composition from England. Black Church Rock. So natural and just perfect for photography. Lines upon leading lines. From the rocks to the clouds in the sky. Photographic poetry. . . The story behind this photo is something else. Having started the day off in Lands End, I made my way up to Dorset. It was certainly a trek. I arrived at the end of my expected arrival window, meaning — the tide was rising. Just 3 minutes later and I would’ve been much closer to the rock than intended. I would set set up the tripod, and stand on the rock behind it, the tide inching up each rock. Taking long exposures left me with fewer shots than usual. So it really did feel like a race against the clock. . . At the end of the day this image stuck with me in all of it’s otherworldly-ness. . . Taken from Febrarury in my 2023 calendar. The Crossing . . This was my second visit to this area of Snowdonia. I had long envisioned a shot from here and tried in the grey skies and then again in the morning. With much brighter conditions and with views of the top of Tryfan, I composed this shot. Originally I took the photo with me on the bridge crossing, but while I was setting up I noticed the sheep grazing. Within minutes they crossed and I snapped away. . . The moment I took the shot I knew this would be apart of the calendar… only it wasn’t in the end. I tried desperately to make room for this shot, exclaiming, this one is in for sure. But I had too many shots and ultimately too many shots with green and mountains. The calendar wasn’t as colorful as I wanted to it to be. But ultimately I realized that the subject of this shot gets lost. While the elements are breathtaking on their own right, the sheep get lost. Even though its the most magical part of the frame to me. They sadly blent too much with their surrounding environment on this bright day. . . Maybe there is away to improve further with editing (ie creating separation between the sheep and the backdrop), but I think my main flaw is the composition itself. Not sure I could do too much more to improve it and create the separation I’m looking for without turning the lake into a sliver of itself. Will keep this all in mind. I do think as a large print this would be pretty epic. Lot of details to take in. . . What would you do to improve this composition? . .
