"THE SOUND OF DISTANT AIRCRAFT GROWS LOUDER AND LOUDER...!"
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a reportedly composite photograph of German Heinkel He 111 bombers over the English Channel, flying low in order to avoid all possible British radar frequencies, c. 1940.
[Who caught my 1981 DISCHARGE reference? War is a black hole to avoid!]

The Flettner Fl 282 Kolibri (Humming Bird). It made its maiden flight in 1941 and several were used operationally in 1942 and beyond. They served in the Baltic, the Aegean and the Mediterranean. Only three of Anton Flettner's groundbreaking craft survived the war, two were taken to the US, one to Russia, the rest were destroyed by the Germans. Heinkel He 111H-2 transported through the town of Roye, France. November 1939. It was intercepted by two Hurricanes of 87 Sqn RAF and shot down by Flt Lt Robert Voase Jeff. It was the first recorded victory for the RAF Advanced Air Striking Force. For his actions, Jeff was awarded the Croix de Guerre and became "the first British officer to receive a French award in the present war." Badly damaged, the Heinkel belly landed at the place called "La Longue Croix", at Staple near Hazebrouck. A wing of the plane struck an electric pylon, while the landing gear broke against a hedge near a small stream. Two French civilians, Jean Ellebout and Eugen Vantours, were the first to reach the bomber. Two of the crew had been seriously wounded. The two others were trying to burn documents and were arrested. Both wounded were brought to Cassel, one later dying of his wounds. The three survivors (including the other wounded) were captured by the French.

The components that made up the A4 (V2) rocket, the world's first long-range ballistic missile. The V2's engine was 17 times more powerful than the largest contemporary rocket engine. It propelled the 13.5 tonne V2 to Mach 5 (6,175kph/3,836mph) before the rocket shut off at an altitude of 80km (50 mi) or 264,000 ft. Fun fact, the curvature of the earth was first seen after a captured V2 was launched post-war by the US with a camera attached. For more, see my Facebook group - Eagles of the Reich
