I’ve told you this before but I’ll repeat it. George “Dubya” Bush began the practice of paying Evangelical pastors to preach against Democrats and in favor of Republicans.
After coming out of rehab for coke addiction “Dubya” became a born again evangelical. As dumb as he is he quickly realized that southern and rural evangelicals were poorly educated and completely uniformed bible thumpers that could easily be bought off and used as a political propaganda props.
“Dubya”, who had deserted the Texas Air National Guard and had many scrapes with the law, had his record expunged by his father who had been director of the CIA. Papa Bush helped Nixon open China to Republikkkan corporations and then as VP assisted Reagan in his war on the American middle class and poor. When “wimpy” dad ran for President, Jr fell in with evil brain bug Karl Rove who put the coke addict in charge of buying evangelical clergy. A fairly easy task because evangelical churches are independent, for profit businesses with no hierarchy to answer to like the mainstream Protestants churches or the Catholics. The effort brought in so many new Republican recruits that it continues to this day.
During the Obama years the Justice Department investigated and revoked the non-profit status of evangelical and Baptist churches that were preaching Republican culture war bullshit. This infuriated them and was largely responsible for the massive backlash against Obama and the Dems. Although this was highly underreported it was a very sore point for the GOP thieves. Even today most Dems think the overreaction by Republicans to Obama was purely racism (and let’s face it they are racist bastards) when in fact it was partly that Barry Obama had cut deeply into their lucrative propaganda/fundraising in the south and rural areas. Although it’s not entirely clear that Obama led this effort to undermine the fascist GOP it shook them to the core. They need the pastors to tell the MAGAts how to vote and who to donate to.
Today the evangelical fake Christians of the old Confederacy are the backbone of the MAGA cult and they have been groomed to accept Trump as a “mercenary” for their bastardization of religion. They are willing to overlook his embodiment of the seven deadly sins because he pushes their agenda, not because he believes in it but because he needs their money and votes. It’s a match made in the bowels of Fox News Hell. They’re aware he’s the biggest sinner in the country but he’s their last best chance to set up a Christo-fascist state. Something that wasn’t even on their radar until the Bush dynasty, Karl Rove, and the RNC came knocking on their doors. They think they’re driving the car but they’re just the limo drivers for the oligarchs and their GOP puppets.
It should be noted that there are some cracks in the armor as many college age evangelicals have been speaking up against the tidal wave of cruelty and evil coming from Trump and the GOP. Somebody must have introduced them to the New Testament and Socialist Jesus. For the most part however the old guard televangelist figureheads have been silencing dissent. The young on both sides, while very vocal, haven’t exactly turned out in the massive numbers we keep hoping for.
Republicans still rely on a coalition of evangelical bible thumpers, far-right Nazis, southern/rural gun nuts, the wealthy, and Deep South Americanized Hispanics. The Dems are still largely a coalition of adult African-Americans, Northeast/West coast progressives, the over educated, urban dwellers, and union members (except for police unions). Thanks for reading and following.

20 years ago, President George W. Bush launched one of the most idiotic wars in US history.
On the surface, Bush invaded Iraq because he claimed its leader Saddam Hussein was about to launch “weapons of mass destruction” against the West. No such weapons were ever found by occupying US forces.
After 9/11, Bush blamed Saddam for the terror attacks of September 2001. There was never evidence of that and that’s what the official 9/11 Commission said in its final report.
Bush was just another evidence-free Republican who got the US involved in a pointless war which did the US no good. One negative concrete result of the Iraq War was that ISIS was founded during the Bush administration’s misadventure in Iraq.
On the whole, the Iraq War harmed US national security more than helped it.
Two decades after the U.S. invaded Iraq, 61% of Americans do not believe the U.S. made the right decision by invading Iraq, according to a new Axios/Ipsos poll.
Why it matters: The chaos and destruction that followed the invasion have made a generation of Americans and their leaders more skeptical of the use of military force overseas, in particular in the Middle East. The invasion toppled a brutal dictator but sparked 20 years of instability in Iraq, and damaged America's standing in the world.
[ ... ]
State of play: Just 31% of Americans think the Iraq War made America safer, while 36% think the U.S. was right to invade, according to the Axios/Ipsos poll published this week.
• There is a clear partisan divide, however, with 58% of Republicans believing the U.S. was right to invade compared to 26% of Democrats.
• Younger Americans, in particular, do not think the U.S. was right to invade Iraq, though majorities in every age group hold that view.
There is lingering suspicion that this war was about oil. Bush, a former Texas governor, was certainly friendly with fossil fuel producers. Grabbing Iraqi oil was the closest thing Bush had to a coherent energy policy.
Bush conducted the Iraq War while already fighting a war in Afghanistan. And Bush kept the Afghan War going long after most of the leaders of al-Qaeda had been captured or killed and the Taliban had been driven from power.
Running two wars on a credit card while giving two rounds of tax breaks to the filthy rich contributed to the financial collapse of 2008 and the subsequent Great Recession.
By contrast, President Joe Biden has, on the cheap, helped to wipe out about half of the Russian Army without the loss of any US service personnel. In non-authoritarian countries US prestige has soared over the past year – rather than sunk under the two awful GOP administrations of the 21st century.
Wingnuts like to say, “libs can’t meme”. Well, a far more important factor this century has been that Republicans can’t war. Vladimir Putin is clearly taking after his GOP pals in this regard.

They cheer when Tulsi Gabbard leaves the party because they see her as an “evil Russian agent” for hating Hillary and not wanting to get involved in war and then they cheer the heiress of the Iraqi child slayer because she’s a patriot for hating the orange man

"SUCKING DEMOCRACY DRY" -- ONE OF THE GREAT POLEMIC PAINTINGS OF OUR TIME.
PIC(S) INFO: Part 2 of 2 -- Spotlight on what began as a convention exclusive, AlexRossArt.com and Mercury Comics present Alex Ross' Bush "Sucking Democracy Dry," originally used by "The Village Voice" in the fall of 2004. Artwork by the maestro, Alex Ross.
""So, what was the least subtle cover you ever did ?" Glad you asked! It's one that might also be the most subtle in an odd way.
Ah, Bush fatigue. Seems almost charming now. We'd been banging the drum on this endless beat of how much W sucked for what seemed like eternity, and the bludgeoning impact of weekly tabloid repetition was taking its toll on me, much less the overall readership. When there was a plan for yet another Bush-centric cover, I was actually at a loss. Particularly because this time around there wasn’t as solid of a story angle as we usually had, so it seemed more about feeding red meat to a base that was... probably doing okay in the protein department at that point.
So I decided to try something so ridiculously blunt and over-the-top it would cast a shadow over any similar tries for quite a while. It was the issue before Halloween. A plan came together. But in order for it really stick and not be shrugged off as just another political-cartoon grotesquerie it had to be rendered as beautifully as possible.
We had done one project before with Alex Ross, but this had a whole other layer of difficulty, since so many elements had to come together precisely. He delivered: The “hot” overhead lighting, the Bela-Lugosi-hand reference, the arc of Liberty's punctured neck, the fact that there are actually no visible fangs.
Subtle!"

ha HA! vindication! strange has put out a video about my immortal covering an obscure but remarkably similar fanfic by fucking raven. clear refutation of the ridiculous troll hypothesis. (like, I was a young depressed teen in fandom, I have been certain from the beginning that it was wholeheartedly earnest. but some people are certain that no one could possibly write like that earnestly, because they are fools who have never been brave enough to be bad at something.)
