EZRA HAWKINS 20693
Sire: Dara Peavine 9157
Dam: Sally O. 17596
Owned by MRS. H. S. SUMERLIN, San Diego, Calif.
This upstanding gelded son of Dare Peavine is as bold and spectacular in his performances as any horse showing on the Pacific Coast today. He was a consistent ribbon winner in every one of the eight shows in which he started during 1948. He won the stake at Silvergate in San Diego and was reserve in the $1000.00 championship stake at Bakersfield, also reserve champion at Imperial and reserve in the gelding stake at Del Mar.
Although he placed way down at Pomona, there is no question in the minds of many horsemen and thousands of spectators that he made the greatest performance of any stallion, more or gelding in the championship stake. It was the consensus of Saddle horse men who witnessed that event that Ezra Hawkins was the "most cheated horse of the season" when he did not place higher in that particular stake. It is admitted that the gelding lacks quality and fineness, but the outstanding performance that he turned in at Pomona was of the caliber that is expected of stake horses and stood out by comparison with several of the other contestants.
Ezra Hawkins is by Dare Peavine, the stallion which sired such equine celebrities Blue Secret, Romantic Lady, Brandywine, Yankee Doodle Dare, Sally May's King, et al.
The dam of Ezra Hawkins is Sally O. by Edna May's King. She was a better than average show mare and has proven to be an exceptional matron, having produced Romantic Lady, Four Roses, Lem Hawkins and Sadie Hawkins.
The gelding was "made" from his very beginning by Poncho Kibbee and was trained and shown by Mr. Kibbee, who is up in this picture. He is owned by Mrs. H. S. Sumerlin of San Diego, California, who also is the owner of *Bonita Valley King, winner of the yearling colt class in California's 1948 Futurity. It was Mrs. Sumerlin who, in 1941, brought out from the East that great little gelding, Artist's Love, and Hazel Twigg (a bay walk-trot mare), both of which now are consistent ribbon winners for other owners.

this is illegal in most places, but there are underground shows that it still happens in
i cant donate in money but i can at least spread awareness about this
also note abt one of the videos: blinders in horses are usually used like falconry hoods, they're used to calm horse down and focus their vision forwards

BEHOLD! A GAITED MULE!
Ziggy arrived this morning and settled in like he’d always been here, almost no running around at all and immediately put his head down to eat 😂
Forrest and Gem don’t really know what to make of him yet but I’d guarantee by the time I’m back tomorrow that she’ll be in flaming season and obsessed with him 🤷‍♀️

Note
that Paso Fino gait makes me think of how i walked when i was a waitress: knees just slightly bent, lots of tiny steps but not actually going very fast, compensating through the hips, so that the upper half of my body didn't move as i walked and i wouldn't spill anything.

I'm starting my new degree in spring (wildlife/fisheries conservation science)
I'm also starting volleyball then, too (libero!!)
And I'm shooting for my first endurance ride with Firefly soon (10 miles intro ride!!)
And I think I'm starting to write my new book of poetry (themed after connection/love of humans)
It's all this new and amazing stuff and I'm probably going to dump about it all over this blog~ 🩷✨
2024 looking to be full and fun!
