Far and away Doomsday Book was the favorite work of fiction I read in 2023. I had a better year of in 2023 than 2022 - I didn't like the majority of the fiction I read in 2022.

Most of the space non-fiction books I read were bangers. Honestly, most of the non-fiction I read this year, I also enjoyed. The Last Action Heroes stood out to me as being a light, fun book that was both a new release and out of my regular wheelhouse.

Astrotopia was my least-favorite non-fiction, Arrarat was my least-favorite fiction. (Neither of these are saying that much, since I DNF most books I really dislike.

☾ ° › update 9:00 am !

the sun rose and the comfortable and safe darkness was set aside. this was bad news for our escapees. klaus and ronan had fought valiantly against fate but not even they could fight against two search parties dedicated to catching royals.

the other groups did not have much luck either max, sylvie, aurel and julien could not outrun well rested men despite their best efforts. uriah, araya, nikolai, sergi & kurakin were slightly luckier — or at least nikita kurakin was. he was the only one who did not get caught.

new day, new rules ! at the break of dawn the men began moving people around. first the monarchs were picked out: alexei, anneli, max, sergi, jianguo, lixue & catherine were taken to the room with arnauld and michael — matilde and levente were removed. only one was missing: verona di savoia. but instead of seeing that particular blonde get pushed into the room, fanni croÿ was escorted into the room.

the monarchs ( and a poorly identified blonde ) were informed of the reason behind their capture: each monarch had a demand to respond to. inability to act would lead to being eliminated.

it was the chinese’s turn to start. they were told to end the blockade on the bohai strait. they were given four hours.

in the same building ronan, maitê, matilde, wiebke, robbie, xiuying, vitya, layla & aslan were contained in the same room.

ana maria, andrew, daisuke, hafiz, freja, marisol, art & okeyo were locked in a room in the building close to the docks.

ilija, sol, ireti, jelani, aurel, klaus, helena, araya, effie, silje, sylvie, gwen, gabriel were all moved to a room in the building on the west coast.

in a different room meixu, uriah, nikolai, elyse, julien, giselle, olimpia & alessandro were held captive.

ariel, bash, reggie, yasmin, levente, ines & tekla were placed in the building in northwest. as were giovanni, natalia, manon, johannes, samuel, barbie, leo, verona, dianna & sasha.

Murder Mystery Au 💌

Geppetto picked up the phone, it's late at night, who could be calling him at this hour?

“It’s me” It was María’s voice, she had never called him before, he had never given him the phone number of his home.

“María-“

“I need you to walk me home” A small hiccup was heard from the other line.

“What-“

“I’m at Elysion Boulevard, the bar is next to that buffet restaurant”

She hung up the phone.

Geppetto didn’t want to stay up too late, tomorrow was when Carlo was moving back home with him, he had also offered Romeo to stay with them but he said it was too much.

Still, Geppetto said how he was always welcomed inside their home.

He knew how Romeo loved Carlo, and how his son loved him back. As a parent you know those things, and it’s a bit obvious when it comes to those two but he keeps it secret, Carlo will tell him when he is ready. If he is even ready, and even if his son never tells him, that’s fine with him.

Geppetto took a deep breath, Carlo is important to him, the most important person in his life, more than María but she was drunk in the streets late at night and that’s a recipe for disaster.

She was next to a public phone, she waved to him while moving her fingers playfully.

The streets were completely deserted, even as they walked together, no one else was to be found.

“María I don’t think your father is going to be happy seeing you like this” Geppetto was worried, Gabriel properly wondering where his daughter was.

“I’ll make up an excuse”

“Like?” María smelled strongly of gin, that’s not something easy to cover up.

“That I went out with friends, I got peer pressed to drink and I went outside for fresh air, you just happened to walk by and offered to walk me home” María had a smile on her face.

“That’s not very convincing, he is going to ask questions”

“Geppetto he thinks I’m Snow White and that I can do no wrong, he will believe me”

Before Geppetto could speak up again, María said something first.

“Like how Carlo lies to you and you believe him”

“What? What does that even mean?!” Geppetto is mad but he has to calm down, she is just drunk.

“Nothing, it’s not like I know a deep dark secret he holds just that, all kids hide things from their parents, Carlo is no different” María didn’t mean make to her love mad, but she had a hard day.

Geppetto stays quiet, it’s true, Carlo lies to him and he can tell.

But Carlo is a good boy, he knows that he isn’t a bad person, at the end of the day his lies are just harmless excuses for his mischievous behavior.

His son wants to be a stalker, he wants to help others; María is right all kids lie to their parents and that’s not inherently a bad thing.

“I lie about a lot of things to my father”

He stays silent.

“How I don’t drink, how I don’t smoke”

Nothing is heard but the sound of crickets.

“How I am not in love with anyone”

Geppetto lets out a sigh, “I’m sorry”

“Do you know why I came here? I drink but I don’t get drunk, I wanted to get drunk” María sounds annoyed and frustrated, she doesn’t have the sweet sugary voice anymore.

“Why did you come here?” Geppetto wants to know what’s making her upset, what he can do to help her.

“Because he introduced me to a suitor”

Oh.

“María I…” Geppetto was interrupted yet again by María.

“I know my father wants the best for me, I KNOW but, ugh, that suitor, that man isn’t you” María only loves Geppetto, she will only love him.

Geppetto doesn’t even know what to say anymore, and if he says something he is probably going to get interrupted again.

It’s best to try and make this conversation flow naturally.

“He thinks I have never kissed anyone before”

Was he her first kiss? Geppetto doubts it by the look on her face.

“But… I don’t lie to him when I say I’m a virgin”

“Okay María listen-“

“I want you to-“

“You are drunk María, I won’t”

She laughed. “‘Not now you big old idiot but eventually”

Geppetto is blushing, that girl is so, so, ugh!

“You are a good man Geppetto, others would have taken the opportunity”

“I’m not, it’s having common decency” It’s the bare minimum.

Everything it’s quiet again.

“Do you love me more than Carlo?”

“Absolutely NOT!” Geppetto did not hesitate.

María let out a small laugh and booped Geppetto’s nose.

“Now I know that you really are a good man, that was just a test” She got closer to Geppetto and grabbed his shoulder, playfully hugging him.

María stepped in front of him, “Can I kiss you?”

They kissed in the veil of midnight, only the moon and the stars as their witness, this time, it wasn’t a quick kiss, it was a passionate one.

“I love you so much that I want to tear you apart limb by limb, each of your organs, and slowly replace them with puppet parts so you can become my perfect puppet to love”

They both laughed, finally arriving.

“I’m so sorry father I shouldn’t have listened to those girls” María’s voice was angelic, with no trace of deception in her lies.

“Geppetto thank you so much for helping her, I don’t want to even imagine what would have happened if you weren’t there” Gabriel was so grateful, he couldn’t stop thanking Geppetto.

“You are someone I can trust, you are a good man”

The next day he was tired but he did his best for Carlo not to notice, he wanted to spend time with him, he spent all day with him, forgetting about checking his mail, he only did it until the next day, the unopened letter waiting for him.

You are also a family man, I don’t expect you to keep up with writing me, but that’s alright, make time for your son. Carlo is so lucky to have you as his father.

He is also really understanding, I love you Geppetto, yet my love doesn’t blind me, I know that you haven’t been the best father.

But you are trying to fix that, that’s admirable and it speaks a lot about Carlo that he is also willing to give you a chance, I unfortunately don’t think I could do such thing if the relationship with my father was strained.

I will keep writing to you, even if you never respond, do what you think it’s best Geppetto.

“I’m home”

Carlo was in the living room, it looked like Romeo had already left.

He left the groceries in the kitchen, then Geppetto made his way to his workshop, he unlocked the door but paused after opening it.

“Carlo, did you enter my workshop?”

Carlo didn’t look right, he was shaking when he asked the question

“No Father”

“It’s nothing, maybe the lock is just getting old”

“Father I swear I didn’t enter”

Geppetto turns around towards his son and plays with his hair.

“It’s okay Carlo, I believe you” He believes his son’s lies.

“It’s almost winter, I can see that you are feeling cold, go change to something else, I don’t want my little boy to get sick”

“Father!” Carlo was embarrassed, but Geppetto’s plan worked, his son wasn’t tense anymore.

“Carlo I’m your father it’s my job to embarrass you” Geppetto is smiling and he hugs his son.

Carlo hugs him back, but he doesn’t let go and Geppetto hears a few sobs coming from his son.

“Father I…” Carlo loves him, he wants to believe in him, he knows that his father loves him too, that he realized his mistakes. He has been so affectionate, and so caring, Carlo finally feels like he has his father back.

That’s why he doesn’t want to believe he would do something so horrible.

Maybe he did love her, but that doesn’t mean he murdered her right?

“Carlo it’s okay, you don’t have to tell me anything that would make you feel uncomfortable” Geppetto gave out a sigh, “To be frank I already knew about you and Romeo-“

“WHAT?!” Carlo was shocked, this wasn’t what he thought would happen.

“Son it’s okay, I don’t mind, I love you no matter what”

Carlo was crying, the conversation had completely shifted but he still felt emotional.

“I thought you would be mad at me,” Carlo said in between sobs.

“Of course not! Carlo, I love you no matter what!” Geppetto shouted, his son is his life, he would do anything for him.

He would kill for him.

Geppetto gave his son another hug, they stayed quiet for some time. They sat down in the living room and after some time Carlo opened up, about Romeo, about their relationship. He never believed his father would be so understanding, he thought he would hate him.

It looks like he is wrong about a lot of things about his father.

Still, he had to ask.

“Father, do you miss her?” Carlo is referring to his mother.

“Of course I miss her Carlo” Geppetto doesn’t hesitate to respond, “I still love her to this day”

“Have you ever loved someone else?” Carlo thankfully made it sound very casual, it looked like his father didn’t suspect anything. His voice was too sweet, not a trace of deceit in it.

“No, I haven’t” Geppetto lied.

I just checked the credits for ep 5 and a girl called Gabrielle Elyse plays Harper

Ricky was referencing Gina's speech at the end of season 3 where she told him he wasn't a maybe he was a yes.

☾ ° › the first night and the second day

GROUP 1: after identifying the royals, the PA members began grouping them. giselle, ana maria, dianna & reginald were kept in the same room. jianguo, samuel, anneli & barbara were moved to the room with group four.

GROUP 2: ines, layla, daisuke, okeyo & leo were disappointed when more captives were brought into the room they were in: alexander, fanni & marisol had been transferred. max, aurel, sylvie & julien on the other hand were told to get up and move. they were taken outside and put in the back of a van but before the car could start, there was a commotion inside the building and the men escorting the four royals went back inside. the four royals seized the opportunity and ran off.

GROUP 3: ilija, xiuying & effie were brought into the room.

GROUP 4: silje, jelani, andrew and yasmin were moved to a new room to make room for the people from group one that were moved to the room. vitya, meixu, lixue & fumiko remained in their original room and were joined by the people from group one.

GROUP 5: klaus & ronan went off on a mission before the sunset leaving the rest to their own. the pair traveled a fair distance only to realize that suddenly there was a search party between them and the bigger group. they had no other option but to get away from their group and ended up on the west coast roughly four miles away. the bigger group heard the barking of dogs and went off running. they ended up separating. ireti, marcello, alessandro & michael found a hiding spot and barely got away. ilija, xiuying & effie got caught and were taken to the nearest building where they were put in the same room as group three.

GROUP 6: before the sun could set matilde, arnauld & levente were told to get up. they were taken to a separate wing. the members of the group seven that got caught were brought into the room later.

GROUP 7: robert’s unconsciousness meant that he was a hinderance and unfortunately for miguel and bastiaan, the reason why the three got caught. they were moved to the building in northwest. uriah, sergi, araya, nikolai & nikita were capable enough to remain hidden. they also didn’t freeze during the night — lucky !

GROUP 8: after alexander, fanni & marisol were taken away, the million toddlers and babies and children began causing trouble: it had been a long day, everyone was tired and their patience had run out. lots of crying and wailing — the noise made a bigger group of PA members rush into the room... they only got the situation under control after getting proper food and drinks to the children.

The 2022 Autumn Carnival Launches at Randwick Racecourse by justcalendars

The Australian Turf Club celebrated 150 years of Australian racing at the launch of the 2022 Autumn Carnival on Tuesday 1 March 2022. The launch honoured Australia’s leading racing heroes, while introducing a diverse group of new ambassadors to the Australian Turf Club family. Australian actresses, Isabelle Cornish and Grace Huang media personality, Sylvia Jeffreys, Australian model Elyse Knowles and power couple Ronan and Storm Keating were announced as Australian Turf Club ambassadors, alongside Rachel Griffiths, the Longines Golden Slipper Carnival ambassador and L D R U who is set to perform on Schweppes Stakes Day, the last day of the Sydney Autumn Carnival. Leading racing personalities Chris Waller, James & Monica Cummings, Edward Cummings, Gabrielle Englebrecht, Hugh Bowman, Sam Clipperton and Winona Costin joined the celebrations, which finished with a spectacular lunch hosted by Australian Turf Club CEO Darren Pearce and COO Tony Partridge at The Stables, on level four of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand.

Friends of the ATC including Myer ambassador Jodi Anasta, Ksenija Lukich, Carissa Walford, Erin Holland, Nerida Winter, Laura Csortan, Tim Mannah and Little Sydney ambassador Matt Moran also joined the celebrations to officially kick off the six week bumper Carnival, which promises an impressive program of world-class racing and social activities.

Talking to the forthcoming Sydney Autumn Carnival, Australian Turf Club CEO, Darren Pearce said:

“This year’s Sydney Autumn Carnival offers Sydney’s racegoers and social set a world-class festival of thoroughbred racing, stunning fashion, entertainment and premium hospitality.

“Over six weeks, the world’s best horses, jockeys and trainers will compete across Sydney’s best racecourses for more than $34 million in prize money across 45 Group races – a $2.4 million increase from last year.”

The 2022 Sydney Autumn Carnival from 12 March – 16 April features two of Australia’s biggest and most respected racing events, the Longines Golden Slipper Carnival and The Championships. The Carnival kicks off with three weeks at Rosehill Gardens including Cellarbrations Ladies Day, 12 March, Longines Golden Slipper Day, 19 March followed by Western Sydney Legends Day, 26 March over the Easter weekend. The Carnival then shifts to Royal Randwick for the third running of The Championships, the Grand Finals of Australian Racing, 2 and 9 April before concluding with Schweppes Stakes Day on 16 April.

Racegoers will witness history with the 60th running of the Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper, the world’s richest race for two year olds, as well as five other Group 1 races, on a day which is arguably one of the most celebrated sporting events of the year. The day will also feature the new ‘Fashion at the Races’ presented by Vogue and GQ Australia, judged by Vogue Australia’s Editor-in-Chief Edwina McCann, as well as the Longines Award for Elegance, NOVA 96.9 Garden Party, pamper lounges and live music, making it a not-to-be-missed event this autumn.

The Championships, the Grand Finals of Australian Racing at Royal Randwick on 2 April and 9 April, in 2022 will offer prize money totalling $20 million – making them the richest two days in Australian Racing. The Championships Day 1 featuring the BMW Australian Derby on Saturday 2 April, set against a backdrop of traditional black and white fashion, will see world-class racing combined with premium hospitality and entertainment. The day features some of Australia’s most iconic races including the $2.5 million Darley TJ Smith Stakes, the $3 million The Star Doncaster Mile and the $2 million BMW Australian Derby. Myer

The Championships Day 2 at Royal Randwick on Saturday 9 April features the world’s richest 2000m turf race, the Group 1 Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes worth $4 million, the Group 1 Cellarbrations Queen of the Turf Stakes, the Group 1 Australian Oaks and Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup over 3200m, now worth $2 million, a $400,000 increase from previous years. Myer Fashions on the Field will once again attract the fashion elite including the second Longines Award of Elegance for the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Little Sydney will again entice food lovers and Sydney’s gastronomical social set to Royal Randwick. Bringing back Sydney’s iconic restaurants Icebergs, Chiswick and China Doll this year, Little Sydney promises to be the hottest ticket to the track this Sydney Autumn Carnival. New to racegoers for 2022, Little Bondi will feature as a pop up on the Leger Lawn featuring dishes by Icebergs, The Bucket List and Da Orazio.
