Day 15 - Kiss

Jane’s cheek was very warm, the tingling sensation from Marigold’s kiss lingering as the tiny girl leaned on her face. She didn’t want to push her away now, it felt too comfortable, too right. But, she needed to look at her.
Almost too slowly, she pulled Mari away from her face, holding her out enough so that she could see her. She looked confused, maybe flustered, but Jane simply raised a brow with a small smile.
“Did you kiss me?”
She watched as Marigold’s face went red, her tiny gaze darting away from Jane’s.
“Y-yeah, I did.” She wrung her hands together, still not looking back at her giant friend. “It just felt right, y’know?”
Her voice tugged on Jane’s heart, she hadn’t meant to embarrass Marigold but it seemed she’d managed to do that anyway. She turned her hand, leaning her face back into Mari’s gaze.
“Do you mind if I… kiss you too?” Jane’s heart hammered, trying to keep her voice steady. “I know I’m a bit bigger…”
Marigold’s eyes locked onto her own, face still red as a beet in the dim light of the desk lamp. “Yes- wait, no- I mean… I don’t mind.” Her voice dropped lower as she offered Jane a nervous smile. “Please.”
Jane smiled, drawing Mari in, pressing her lips on her tiny head, covering her face. She knew it must be strange for a kiss to cover so much in this way, but it felt so right.
After a few seconds that stretched like minutes, they parted and Marigold fell backwards onto Jane’s palm, breathing heavily. Jane blushed, gently caressing Mari’s hair with a finger, holding her close. “I hope I wasn’t too much.”
Mari’s hand came up and gripped the gentle finger. “Nope, it wasn’t enough. I’m going to need a few more, I think.” A sideways smile greeted Jane’s blushing face, before she returned one of her own.
“Oh? Well, I think I can oblige…”

Sharing Acorns
A bit of writing based on @aaytaro-gt ‘s Inktober prompt list.
Day 1 - Acorns
===
“You know, I constantly forget how small things could be until you show me something I can hardly see.”
Jane lay in the clearing, a thick jacket protecting her from the crisp autumn air as she studied the minuscule acorns on her palm. She’d be finding little gold and red leaves in her hair and clothes for the next few days for sure, but that was fine.
It was beautiful out here in the forest, and she could lay down in this clearing just fine. Sure, the trees were small right now, but it was still a gorgeous place to be.
Marigold laughed, a musical sound to Jane’s ears. “Oh please, everything I bring is small to you.” She sat on her friend’s palm with the acorns, dropping a few more into the pile Jane was rolling with her thumb.
“Well sure, but a lot of the things you show me are very small.” Jane said with a huff, ruffling her friend’s clothes with the breeze. Marigold simply laughed again, dropping the rest of the acorns on her friend’s hand, dusting her own off.
“Oh, like the sunflower seeds I shared with you the other day?”
“Yeah, I could barely tell you’d dropped anything on my tongue: they were so small! I didn’t taste anything till you emptied the bag…”
“The fly I caught in the jar?”
“Nothing could be that small; I couldn’t see anything in there!”
Her tiny friend laughed, and she quickly joined in. How things had changed over the past few years, how strange it was to meet each other still.
Some things just didn’t seem real when they managed to come together in the woods, when the forest blurred enough where they could meet in person. And it was always so lonely after the forest came into focus and they had to go back to their homes until the next time.
The world had a strange way of bringing people together.
“Anyway,” Jane started to say as she shifted, reaching into her jacket pocket. “Here's an acorn from my backyard.” Marigold stood up on Jane’s hand, bouncing on their feet as the much larger acorn came into view.
“Yes yes yes yes- ooooh! It's as big as a pumpkin!” She reached out and pulled the nut from Jane’s fingers, holding it up in her arms as her eyes ran over it.
It was Jane’s turn to chuckle as she watched her friend study the acorn, her attention focused as she spun it around to take in the entirety. It really was quite big to her, but it was only just an acorn.
“Oh, here!” Marigold finally said, plucking up one of her much smaller acorns in her fingers to compare to Jane’s. “There we go, that's quite the difference! Looks like it's carved out of wood!”
“I can hardly tell, so I’ll have to agree with you this time.”
“Why didn’t you bring that window you call a magnifying glass? You usually do.”
Jane sighed. “I would have, but I left it in my car after the rain last month. I completely forgot it.”
“Oh, that's too bad.” She paused her study of the acorns to frown. “How long do we have left?”
They each checked their watches, the wind picking up in the forest as more autumn leaves began to fall around them. The blurring would end soon, if the breeze was any sign.
“Guess that's it for this one.” Marigold sighed, moving to the edge of Jane’s hand before hopping down to the ground.
“Yeah, I hate how short these random ones are, but at least we get some warning.”
They regarded each other with smiles, before Marigold lifted the acorn back up from where she’d left it on Jane’s outstretched hand.
“Well, can I keep the acorn? I think it would look great on my kitchen table!”
Jane laughed. “Mari, it's just an acorn. You don’t have to ask for it!”
Her tiny friend held the acorn to her chest, face flushed red, the wind picking up as the blurring began to fade away. “Well yeah, but…”
“It’s a gift then; I’ll see you soon!” Jane got out, blushing at the happy smile on Marigold’s face as she faded away.
The world turned blurry as the forests came back into focus and Jane was left in a similar clearing to before, golden red trees as tall as normal, the sounds of rustling leaves catching her ears, and a normal sized maple leaf landing in the grass beside her.
Jane pocketed the tiny pile of tiny acorns that had faded into her own world, smiling. She’d add these to her collection of tiny gifts, stored carefully in her room.
They’d meet up again next time the forests merged and, until then, she’d have these gifts to admire.
Of course, when her phone rang in the car and she saw Marigold’s contact info pop up, she didn't let the boundaries between their worlds stop her from talking to her friend.

Sharing Pie

Day 8 - Dessert
Bit of a sequel to Sharing Acorns.
==
“You didn’t!”
“Oh, I did.”
Jane and Marigold were once again in the autumn clearing, this time on a massive blanket Jane had brought with her. The forest had blurred enough for them to meet again, and so Jane had brought a surprise.
Marigold’s eyes were on the massive dish her friend had brought to show, and hopefully share!
“A pumpkin pie!” She hopped to her feet, staggering across the wrinkled folds of the blanket towards the dessert. “An absolutely massive pumpkin pie!”
“It’s not that big…” Jane replied, but Marigold could easily see her own excitement bleeding into her friend's expression. A face as big as a billboard was easy to read!
“Well, it's huge to me! I can’t imagine how long it would take my mom to make one like this, she’d probably have a heart attack just thinking about it!” She leaned on the edge of the ceramic plate, breathing in the sweet aroma of the pie.
It smelled wonderful.
Jane giggled, reaching an arm into the bag she’d brought with her. “Well, it wasn’t that hard to make, but I'm glad you like it.” She pulled out a plate, a fork, and a knife; Marigold’s smile grew, locking onto the smiling face of her friend.
“Want a slice?”
Marigold threw her hands up. “What kind of question is that? Of course I’d like a slice!”
“Well then,” Jane said, cutting into the giant dish like it was nothing, “I better make sure you get a big piece.”
Mari rubbed her hands together as the massive slice was lowered onto the plate, right next to her. Jane cut herself a thinner slice, flicking her hair back as she took a bite, motioning with a grin for Marigold to dig in.
She’d brought her own utensils, thankfully, so she wouldn't need to scoop the pie with her hands. Not that she didn’t want to physically dig into the pie, she desperately wanted to, but she’d have to drive home covered in giant food.
It wouldn’t be a pleasant drive, or an easy cleanup.
They both dug in, and it was fantastic. Marigold, of course, didn’t finish her’s: it was at least four times her size if not four times her weight. Jane happily finished it for her though.
“How did you like it?”
Marigold lay back on the blanket, completely stuffed. “It was fantastic. Best pie I’ve ever had, even if the texture was a bit… big.” She held her arms in the air, miming the size.
Jane’s gaze was pulled away from her, looking up towards the trees. “Oh, guess our time is up again, trees are blurring…”
Mari sighed, sitting up to look at the red and gold trees as they began to blur, the familiar size of her own trees breaking apart from the much larger trees of Jane’s world.
“Well, thank you for the pie, it was great! I’ll have to bring something like that next time, I’ll have to make it big though!” She laughed at the last part as she stood up on the blanket, grinning at her giant friend.
“I look forward to it.” Jane returned, looking back down at Mari for a moment with a smile before they both returned their gazes to the treeline as the blurring approached the extreme, and faded.
Marigold’s brow furrowed, and she stared at the still too large trees. What happened? Why were the trees still big? She was still on the blanket, and Jane was still here and looked just as confused as she felt.
“Mari? You’re still…” They looked at each other in astonishment. Marigold bit her lip, glancing towards the massive treeline before looking up at Jane with an unsteady smile.
“I guess I missed my ride?”

Sharing Nightmares
A bit of writing based on @aaytaro-gt ‘s Inktober prompt list.
Day 13 - Nightmares
Sharing Inktober Series: Sharing Acorns | Sharing Pie
==
“Then you were gone. At the end you just… left me there in the woods, looking disgusted and- and-” Marigold hugged her knees to her chest, sitting on the pillow next to Jane’s head as she held back another choked sob.
The massive bedroom was lit only by the dim lamp on Jane’s nightstand, casting most of the room in long shadows. Rain battered the window, the blinds closed to the autumn storm that raged outside.
“Mari, you know I’d never have left you out there.” Jane’s hand was cupped around Marigold’s back, the warmth and comfort palpable to her tiny friend as her thumb slowly stroked Mari’s hair. She’d been sleeping in a makeshift bed on the nightstand, but it felt too far away right now.
So she sat on the pillow, cupped in the comforting warmth of Jane’s hand.
“I know, it was just a nightmare. It's just…” She shuddered, leaning closer into Jane’s hand, practically sucking the warmth from her fingers, “It's been two weeks without a blur, and I’m worried.”
Jane’s eyes looked softly at her friend, and she nodded. “I’m worried too, but we just have to keep waiting. What's the longest we waited between blurs?”
“Two months…”
“Exactly,” She gave Marigold a tired but comforting smile, “We’ve waited longer. And you managed to call your mom before your phone died; everyone back home knows you're okay.”
They sat in silence as Marigold looked away, biting her lip. Finally she sighed, looking back at Jane. “I always found your world, how big it is, to be fascinating.”
She looked away again, tucking her chin to her legs. “Even mundane objects are gigantic marvels to me. But, living here… it's not easy.”
“And I’m here to help-”
“I know!” Marigold shouted, Jane’s hand flinching away.
Marigold grabbed the retreating thumb, pulling Jane’s hand back as she sighed, hugging the thumb to her chest. “I know. It's just… it's hard not being able to do things I normally do. And sometimes my brain likes to concoct stupid stories about how fucked I’d be if you weren’t here. Or if you wouldn’t help me. Or if you… couldn’t.”
They lay in the non-silence of the storm outside for a moment before Jane’s hand wrapped around Marigold in a makeshift hug, tucking under her slightly as she brought her friend closer to her face.
“Tomorrow we’ll find ways to make you more independent.” She said near a whisper, “We’ll get strings and popsicle sticks to make ladders; foam, cloth, and clay for chairs and a bed; we’ll even find some way to charge your phone.”
They locked eyes for a moment, before Jane looked away. “I don’t want you to feel like I’m smothering you, or that I’m not letting you do what you need to when you want to and…” She trailed off, sniffing as she briefly considered her words.
“Jane…” Marigold whispered, just loud enough for the giant woman to hear her.
“I don’t… I… I had a nightmare too, a few days ago.” Jane started, “I’ve been worried about you every day, worried about how to get you home, worried about if everything I was doing was right or wrong, hoping that you don’t resent me for the things I mess up.”
“I had a nightmare that you ran away, and I never saw you again.” Her grip tightened infinitesimally around Marigold, “I never learned if you made it home, or if you…” She blinked away tears, her other hand emerging from the blankets to wipe them away.
“I worry that I don’t do enough.” Jane took a steadying breath, “So I’ll do better, okay?”
Marigold pushed Jane’s thumb away, standing on the pillow, and Jane watched her, tears still lightly pooling on her sideways face. The tiny woman walked the rest of the way across the pillow, stopping in front of her friend’s face.
“You’ve done more for me in these past two weeks than nearly anyone else has done for me my entire life.” She stepped closer. “I feel like I’m a burden sometimes, but…”
Marigold gave her a small smile. “I’m pretty sure we’re both wrong.” She crossed the rest of the distance to Jane and leaned on her, giving her the closest thing she could to a hug at her size. Jane’s hand came up behind her, lifting her as she sat up in bed..
“I think you’re right, these nightmares are just… stupid.” She smiled as Marigold waved her to hold her closer, and she obliged, hugging the miniature girl close.
Jane felt the tiny kiss on her cheek like a lightning bolt, warming her skin like fire.
“You’re right.” Marigold whispered, leaning into Jane’s cheek. “Stupid nightmares.”
