Street Food Vendor at Shotengai
There are many kinds of street food that one can enjoy in Japan. Although eating while walking down a street is considered bad manners, it is perfectly acceptable during festivals. Just be careful that you don’t spill your food or drink on passersby since festivals can get super crowded!
The street food sold here is packaged and meant to be eaten at home, at a park bench, etc. If you do find a seat and eat your snack at a park, or sidewalk bench, just remember that there are no public garbage cans. So, you can either take your food home and enjoy it, or eat it when it’s nice and warm, and then be sure to take your garbage home with you. At some festivals, however, where they expect you to eat and walk at the same time, there are often temporary garbage disposal sites set up so that your waste does not spoil the shrine or temple grounds, or the residents in the local neighborhood.
This street vendor seems to have rented out an empty shop that has been shuttered and no longer used for its original purpose. The foods sold here included:
たいやき|taiyaki (right sign) for 100 yen (about $0.70 USD): a cake shaped in the shape of a fish called tai, and filled with sweet red bean paste. Variations may include custard, chocolate cream, cheese, or sweet potato.
オムそば|omu-soba (middle sign) for 250 yen (about $1.72 USD): fried soba noodles wrapped in an egg omelet with various veggies, spices, and sauces.
サーター・アンダギー|sata andagifor (left sign) 100 yen (about $0.70 USD): sweet deep-fried buns of dough that are kind of like doughnuts, but originally from Southern China where the dish made its way to Okinawa and then throughout the rest of Japan.
Of all three, sata andagifor is probably my favorite, but the taiyaki is probably more common, especially at traditional festivals that are held throughout the year depending on the local shrine.

These are photographs I took at Schiphol Airport. The Netherlands main airport and the KLM hub. These pictures were taken in April, back when the covid-19 pandemic had a deep impact on pretty much the entire world but especially the airline industry. Not even 3% of their normal amount of customers went out flying. The airport were open but mostly empty. For me this was the perfect time to capture the airport. I believe it’s a historical strong moment to have captured and will be seen as one in the future. People simply cannot picture an empty airport in their minds, so I did it for them.
