Your ability to perform a freedive to depth is determined by a number of factors: ⠀ - The ease with which your auditory tubes open and your ability to equalize pressure. ⠀ - Your mental stability and your ability to relax. Overcoming stress and is your biggest challenge. When preparing for a freedive, first achieve harmony and calm in both body and mind. ⠀ - Your physiological adaptation, that is your body’s tolerance and its ability to adapt to physiological changes arising from for example, hypoxia, hyperoxia, hypocapnia, hypercapnia, acidosis, and nitrogen narcosis. ⠀ - A low level of oxygen consumption in your body tissues. The intensity of oxygen consumption differs from person to person. Those who consume more oxygen find it harder to hold their breaths for extended periods of time. ⠀ - Your lung volume and tissues, your chest flexibility and the elasticity of your diaphragm. ⠀ - Functional mobility of the vascular system in your lungs and heart. Additional blood enters your pulmonary and heart vessels during a freedive to depth. Vessels which have a higher degree of elasticity are able to endure greater changes in blood flow. ⠀ - The effectiveness and variety of your freediving techniques. A qualified and experienced freediver can freedive more easily and stay underwater longer than a beginner freediver because of their mastery and use of different techniques. WHALE SHARKS... We decided to visit the whale sharks in Oslob, Philippines. Ethically speaking the, "sanctuary", bosts that whale sharks appear all year round. The real reason for this is that the whale sharks are being fed twice a day. This may disrupt a few whale sharks normal migratory patterns. But, we decided as they are endangered there are worst things in the world than feeding them. Always research where you are going for these incredible experiences. Tiger and python "sanctuaries" in the Philippines and Thailand, to name a few, are often heavily sedated when "meeting" them and the animals they serve live miserable lives. Proper streamlining is extremely important in freeidiving and is something that most freedivers and spearfisherman pay little attention to. Water is 800 times denser than air, so the amount of surface area you have to push through the water makes a huge difference. What is the difference between Freediving and Scuba Diving? ⠀ Freediving, as the name suggests, is diving with complete freedom. A properly trained freediver can ascend and descend as quickly as they like since there are no restrictions. Hyperventilation means breathing in excess of the demands of your body, that is breathing in and out more than you require. This results in a decrease of carbon dioxide in your blood. Your oxygen saturation remains unaffected. This decrease delays the stimulation of your respiratory center and therefore you do not feel a strong urge to breathe, even if your oxygen concentration drops below a critical level. This is because your respiratory system is far more sensitive to changes in carbon dioxide concentration than it is to oxygen. ⠀ A decrease in carbon dioxide concentration in your blood also leads to an increase in alkalization, that is an increase in your blood pH. This in turn increases the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen (hemoglobin binds more tightly with oxygen) and hinders oxygen supply to your body tissues. This is part of the Bohr Effect which states that the oxygen binding affinity of hemoglobin is inversely related both to acidity and to the concentration of carbon dioxide. ⠀ Symptoms of hyperventilation include dizziness, and tingling in your fingers and other extremities. ⠀ Remember: Focus on physical and mental relaxation such as visualization before your freedive and avoid any breath manipulation.
