Let's Talk About Fortnite's Big New Update
It's been about a week since Fortnite added its three new main modes, so I figured I could jot down some notes about how I feel about each one, since I continue to play an absolute obscene amount of this game, given it's basically the only live service game I've ever connected with.
Lego Fortnite
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is maybe the biggest new mode added to the game, and at a glance, you might think it's their take on Minecraft. Having put about 10-20 hours into it now, I can tell you it's a lot more like Valheim, sprinkled with a bit of Terraria. It's a survival game, where your goal is to start a town out in the procedurally generated wilderness. As your town levels up in size and complexity, you attract NPCs to take up residence, which you can put to work gathering resources, manage farms, cook food, or party up to help you explore the world and raid various caves.
There's enough content here to support that 10-20 hours, but you'll eventually run out of things to do, given there's just three biomes and only a handful of creatures. Updates are already promising things like merchants, more creatures and even quest givers, so it definitely feels like it has legs, and I think what's here plays well enough. It just feels more like a foundation right now. This is one of those things where, like, it may be worth checking in on 6 months down the road, because there's a lot of potential it could grow into. And hey, it's the only one of these modes that doesn't have any additional fees hooked on top of it yet. That's a plus.
Rocket Racing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Created by Psyonix, this is a racing mode that's a little hard to quantify. The actual racing mechanics themselves are solid: drift to charge up three levels of boost, with a kind of "active reload" system that can almost double your boost if you hit it just right. There's a jump button, and your jump jets can be used to hover over hazards. After you jump, you can also use the drift button to perform a flip in four directions, because your car can also drive up walls and across the ceiling. So, if you jump, push up on the stick, and then tap the drift key, you'll flip up on to the ceiling. Despite all of this mechanical complexity, Rocket Racing still feels too simple to have much lasting power. Some of the fun of a racing game is how everyone tunes their vehicles differently, but so far there's just the the one Rocket Racing car.
Epic and Psyonix could be going for more of a Trackmania feel, and user-generated tracks (the main appeal of Trackmania) are something they're teasing for Rocket Racing, but it's worth mentioning that Trackmania has always seemed kind of niche. It's never had the success of something like Forza Horizon or even Need for Speed.
This also has one major strike against it that Trackmania does not: you collide with other players in Rocket Racing, which is actually sort of a nightmare thanks to network latency. I've run into a lot of shockingly aggressive opponents that treat the game like bumper cars, and every time they crash into you, it's like rolling the dice as to whether or not the collision will actually register. Sometimes your opponent harmlessly slides off the side of your car, and other times the most gentle tap will send you into a tailspin. I wouldn't call the mode terrible, but judging by Fortnite's own menu system, player numbers are dropping fast. It's cool being able to flip around between walls and the ceiling, but there's not enough to sink your teeth into long-term besides overpriced vehicle cosmetics.
Fortnite Festival
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is literally just Rock Band 5. The main change is the way you play notes -- there's no plastic instrument support yet (that's coming later, apparently), so you're limited to playing it on either a keyboard or a gamepad. The way the buttons are mapped out by default, there are certain combinations of notes they are never going to make you press together, because it's impossible to hit both left and right on the d-pad simultaneously. Besides that, I'm not kidding, it's actually just Rock Band, and unfortunately I'm one of those people who struggles to connect with rhythm games.
I love something like Parappa the Rapper or even Theatrhythm, but I just don't connect with a lot of the genre in the same way most people do. This version does at least connect to Fortnite's cosmetics system, so you can have Michael Myers singing vocals in Gangnam Style, backed up by Beast Boy and Ellen Ripley wearing a Ghostbusters proton pack. During downtime where you might not have any notes to play, you're given the option to use your Fortnite emotes. That's fun enough on its own, but it's extra fun on skins with transformation abilities. Going back to Beast Boy, it's fun to watch the camera pan by him in his regular Teen Titans attire, only for him to suddenly be a bass-playing gorilla the next time you see him.
Tumblr media
Also included are "Jam Tracks", which let you play specific pieces of songs outside of the Rock Band mode. So if you want, during a Battle Royale match, you could start playing the bassline to Seven Nation Army at any time, anywhere, and even change the pitch and tempo. Other players can choose to join in, adding vocal tracks, or lead guitar, or drums, all from different songs, creating a strange sort of on-the-fly mashup. It's not super deep, but I suppose it's there to justify the fact that songs in Fortnite Festival are roughly $5 each. Festival also has its own Battle Pass, at $18 -- almost twice what the Battle Royal Pass costs, and unlocking stuff on the Festival Pass feels like the slowest possible grind. Too many Festival quests only give 10 or 15 "points" towards the pass, when you often need THOUSANDS for the next unlock. Kind of a bummer!
Battle Royale
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a bonus, some commentary on the current chapter of BR: as of this latest iteration of Fortnite, it feels like they've basically rebooted the entire game. If you've been paying attention to industry news, Epic's had quite the exodus of high-ranking staff lately, leaving me with a feeling that a completely different team is handling Fortnite now. Every piece of the gameplay has been retooled seemingly overnight, from healing systems to movement speed. The best way to sum it all up is that it feels a lot more like PUBG now. But like, worse? Weapons have attachments now, foregrips and sights and stuff, but there's no way to pull a sight off one gun and put it on another. You can only buy attachments at a workbench, of which there's only, like, seven on the entire map.
So generally you're stuck with whatever attachments are already on a gun when you find it, and there's no easy way to compare attachments if you want to swap for something else. The previous system -- which was basically just WoW's rarity system -- was a lot clearer and easy to understand. A purple gun is always better than blue. Now those waters are a lot muddier, and you don't have access to the information you need to make informed decisions about what is better than what. The simplicity that made Fortnite more accessible than PUBG is gone now. The other changes just take some getting used to, but the slower movement does mean running from a closing storm circle is a lot harder in a way that feels like nobody on the team really understood or accounted for.
The main issue is that Battle Royale is still trying to be the "spotlight" mode in Fortnite right now, which means its trying to incorporate a little bit of everything and it's hurting the experience. The new cosmetics locker system is a total nightmare to use, more tedious in every single conceivable way, to such a degree it's hard to comprehend anyone actually thinking it's a legitimate improvement. Fortnite also tries to pull in your Rocket Racing cosmetics to BR now, but only for certain vehicles, which in itself taps into a long standing frustration with Fortnite's handling of vehicle cosmetics overall.
Close to five years ago, Fortnite introduced its "wraps" system for guns that work like liveries in a racing game -- basically a custom texture for your gun. Wraps have inconsistently applied to other things as well. Fortnite's earliest vehicles like the golf kart and quadbike accepted wraps, as did boats. There are even skins now that can wear wraps as clothing patterns.
Tumblr media
But cars could never have wraps applied to them. There were hints that maybe wraps would eventually apply to vehicles, as there were updates where they started appearing on pieces of a vehicle, but never the whole thing. Now we finally get vehicle cosmetics, but it only applies to one vehicle type, and transforms it into a completely different car body? It feels half-baked and deeply arbitrary.
Fortnite has often had many different vehicle classes on the map together, between pickups, sports cars, sedans, and hauler trucks. But now the sports cars are the Rocket Racing car? It's cool on the surface, but a strange portent of future seasons. What of the other vehicle types? They're not in the game right now, but will they be? Will sports cars be a permanent fixture of the Fortnite map going forward, so the cosmetics always carry across between modes? Is this a hint that other vehicle types are coming to Rocket Racing, and that eventually, we'll be able to apply cosmetics to everything?
Which is to say nothing about the fact that wraps don't even seem to apply to guns anymore. There's a lot of systems that hook into wraps that they can't just get rid of -- but it definitely seems like whoever is in charge of things right now is trying to find a way to ignore them, starting with the core functionality they were invented for.
Like a lot of things about what's happening to Battle Royale in Chapter 5, it feels super weird, and very divorced from the Fortnite I used to know and enjoy. Their attempts to try and tie everything together like this so that Battle Royale can have elements of all (or most) of the other modes incorporated into it just don't mesh very well or feel very necessary. They're recreating and then solving problems that were already solved four years ago.
Which is ultimately the bummer: I'm not sold that any of this needs to be inside of Fortnite, and I don't think it's going to pay off in the end. It's hurting the core experience a little bit and the best, most fun new modes would have still been fun as standalone games.
Tumblr media
I just don't see the point. How big is big enough, Epic?

Fortnite Chapter 5, Season 1: Underground.
Not the direction i was expecting. Regardless, we're on a new map. Helios. A Fortnite map based off of Europe! I took a trip to Germany years ago and every time i drop down in the map, i feel like i'm there. The architecture and landscape reminds me so much of my trip. Even the gas stations are European! There's also a train that constantly loops around the map. I hope the next Fortnite map takes inspiration from other places in the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the OG map to something entirely new. New all around actually. This season takes a more serious tone, revealing a grizzled Jonesy and a new character, Hope. She's the leader of a resistance that is fighting against a society of the rich and corrupt.
This season, they introduced a weapon modding system that affected how your guns behaved. Wanna ADS faster? Want a easier to manage bullet spread? This season taught me the importance of relying on hip-fire. They made the new weapons work in a way that made the gun-play tighter. Oh the guns...
Tumblr media
They changed them so now, all of their bullets are physical objects instead of pure beams. Few guns used to do this, but now all of the ones in the loot pool are like this. I love this change. Fortnite's bullet spread has always been frustrating. This feels more manageable and fair. Also the riot shield and grapple blade also appeared.
A lot of things were changed. One thing i'd like to point out is the movement. It helped make the game feel brand new. Everyone's used to it now, but it was so unreal to lay eyes upon for the first few hours. It was so cool.
The story revolves around two groups that are battling for control. The society has kidnapped Peely for some reason, and Jones is 100% not playing about getting his friend back. As i said before, this season introduces Hope. A woman that wishes to have her sister, Valeria back alongside crushing the society. Valeria for some reason believes that Peely is the key to the past, something she is very interested in. What is that thing? Who knows. I have the feeling she's gonna open something she shouldn't.
Tumblr media
The character designs from this battle pass are fantastic. Hope's look will probably mean everything to a young girl somewhere. Valeria serves, night and day. Jonesy's new look surprisingly works on him, Nisha has a great look for a fencer with a stunning face underneath. Montague looks as cold as he's described and Oscar's design is a staple. I feel bad for those missing out on him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actually, the character designs from this season alone have been nothing short of stunning. Every update has shown me a face that i would totally spend money on. I wish i could buy them all. But some were too good to resist...
Also, this was the first season in a while to have a live event. Valeria's obsession with the past has somehow lead to a giant hand appearing near Risky Reels. When it appeared, there were chains that players had to work together to destroy. It was nice seeing the community come together like this. I think we're on a better path.
Tumblr media
This season is top one for me. The gunplay, the map, the characters, the design, the everything was just top tier.

The new season of Fortnite feels so fucking good, and I think it's actually because they removed a lot of content.
So if you don't know, Epic is doing something called "Fortnite OG" where for this month, they revert Fortnite back to what it was like in 2018. Augments are gone. Skate lines are gone. Motorcycles are gone. Shock hammers are gone. Swords are gone. Fishing is gone. NPCs are gone. Gold is gone. Loot bunkers and keys are gone. Vehicles (except for the shopping and golf carts) are gone. Everything that Fortnite added over the years to speed up gameplay and add depth is gone.
We're back on the old map, which had smaller locations, and less loot. Healing items are rarer, and all require time to consume. The weapon and item pool is significantly smaller. The only vehicle is the golf cart, which is slow and unwieldy compared to other vehicles.
And yet, this is still their most popular recent update, by far. Even days after the update dropped, I still get put in a queue when trying to log in during peak hours. And I don't think it's because of nostalgia, I think the slower paced gameplay of the earlier seasons is objectively better. No more splash heals and less movement items means fights no longer get dragged out into wars of attrition. The C4 and RPG allow for ways to counter insane builds. Epic and Legendary tier weapons are actually rare now, and it's more rewarding to find one. The zone is an actual threat again, and you can't instantly rotate from one side of the map to the other.
This season made me realize that I actually much prefer Fortnite when it has a slower pace. And that makes me sad, because there is no way Epic is going to keep the game in this state for longer than a month. They spent hundreds of millions of dollars developing the game with all these new mechanics, and even adding it as an additional, officially supported gamemode would segregate their playerbase again, which I'm sure they don't want.
I'm going to play a lot of Fortnite this week, and think about game design. I encourage you to do the same.

Talking about multiplayer games 2022
Hi, I don’t really talk about this much because I mostly do it on twitter, but for the past two years or so I got active on backloggd because I enjoy writing in depth about video games but wont pretend that I have the speech ability to start a video game essay youtube. Feel free to read some of those if you want, I put more time into them than I should
However those who did click it might've noticed that I don’t really put stuff out on multiplayer based games. It’s not that I don’t play them; I play a lot really, but I have a hard time leaving a permanent review on multiplayer games just because of how the modern multiplayer games are; if you game is not actively updated it dies and is left in the dust. Every multiplayer game, even if it doesn’t call itself one, is a live service game, and live service games have to be iterated on constantly, it’s just the nature of the beast. How do you put a review on something that might radically change in a year from now?
But I do want to talk about multiplayer games i put a decent amount of time into; but backloggd doesn’t have liek an individual journel entry thing i think and twitter doesn’t have the character limit for it, so I wanted to talk about multiplayer focused games I put time into this year  in this post. check it out under the cut
Lets just peel the Bandaid off real quick
Fortnite
Tumblr media
fuck me.
I think everyone has a character that fortnite will put into the game and it’ll break the camel’s back and you go “alright, i gotta see whats going on” and install it. for me it was vegeta.
It’s all an elaborate bait. They lure you in with truly outrageous crossovers; like shonens? we got DBZ, naruto and now MHA. Your favorite game characters? we got a lot of them; and god help us if they managed to make a deal with nintendo. You like marvel? cuz baby we Got Marvel. And the trap they lure you into with the bait? it’s that... fortnite is a good game?
Fortnite just hits a wonderful level of casual while still being a game where you can solo queue. The game just loves adding or rotating in weird stuff and it conjoins into a truly unique experience, while still having solid gunplay and honest 1v1s.
I’ve caught people filling gas with a pumpkin themed rocket launcher, turning them and the entire gas station into dust. In squads we set up a bounty, all four of us got on our own motorcycles and bows and chased them half way through the map like we were modern day mongels. I downed someone, picked them up, and had my friend with the bow that shoots poison gas shoot a cloud at my feet so I can smoke a dude out to death in my hands, which irl would likely be a for real warcrime. I can’t get this anywhere else.
other short thoughts: the game’s story setup of an island where realities crash together does wonders for the games skins. Outside of the collab stuff the skin parameters jsut being “a human body shape”  means they have full freedom to do whatever they want with skins; and this game has better original skins that most games on the market, there’s something you like in it.
Part of the game’s success is its ability to just pump out content faster than any other game on the market, almost to the detriment of the entire gaming scene. The game rotates in new stuff almost every single week. Season 4 almost feels like a brand new game. Every other games output factor feels sluggish comapred to fortnite, which isnt fair because they make a bazillion dollars a day.
Also all of this is because of no build. Every time i’ve played gamemodes with build I find building just a straight detriment to the game. I would not of gotten into this game if I didnt get into it when no build was in the game; something that i’m pretty sure epic realizes. add no build royal rumble NOW
Fortnite unfortunately rules on multiple fronts
Gundam Evolution
Tumblr media
Gundam Evo is a fun game with just the most annoying progression/monetization on earth.
Gundam is fun, fast, with cool characters even though I mostly just wanted to play methus/unicorn. Coming off the OW2 beta where i played for one evening with friends and didnt feel like playing it again into evo felt like night and day. Felt more frag heavy, far less CC/shield shooting, everyone’s got dashes, far less dependant on mmo tank/healer/dps focus in shooting game for some reason lead fora very fun time.
It still had overwatch problems; sometimes a team pops 3 ults at the same time and you just gotta give it up, lower skill team mates makes the game extremely hard and lop sided, ect ect but I still greatly enjoyed it more than OW2 and is one of the funner games in terms of pure shooting
however, the F2P aspect of the game basically killed it for me. The currency to buy units (and loot boxes) is limited to just rewards from the battlepass; of which giving how the first two went will require you to reach almost the end of the BP to get enough currency to buy a unit. Given the plan seemingly to add 1 unit a season, there’s no way to acquire every unit free to play (there’s 5 locked from the beginning, 6 now with Nu) , and if you fall off for a season the stuff you cant get just piles up. Along with that the daily/weekly system is frustrating; all quests are also locked to randomly selected choices of units, an idea perhaps made to force variation but often leads to you just not playing what you want so you dont fall behind on the BP.
This all came to a head for me when i finished the S1 BP, took a break from the game, returned to S2 to see that every weekly/daily i had was for units I don’t want to play and had all interest in playing get sucked out of me.
Gundam evo is a fun game just dragged into the mud with the infuriating f2p design choices.
Multiple Different Fighting Games
Tumblr media
I have a complication relationship with fighting games. I like them, and buy them, but just cant commit myself to them. I hate playing online, part of it being how ladder experience in most fighting games and also i’m not good at them so I get angry if I’m not playing with my friends, and sometimes i still get mad when i’m playing with friends. I’ll keep buying them and there’s plenty I do want to put more time into, but I had hitting discords with @everyone games? so a lot of them are doomed to be low on play time. here’s a quick rundown for them anyways
KOF 2002UM: picked up for the rollback update. I already kinda knew it but I played a decent amount of KOF this year and I really enjoy this franchise, hitting a nice middle ground between games like SF and faster anime fighters for me. This game is very fun and I had a blast. I also picked up 98 but i didnt play enough of it to make a real opinion.
Melty Blood Type Lumina: I really wanted to like this, and returned with the 2.0 update, and just still can’t get into it. it’s really disappointing because i LOVE MBAACC, which I would say is one of my favorite fighting games. Just never hit otuside of very early days; I still dont like shield and changes just feels like a bandaid and I never found a charater i was in love with like I was with C Wara, and seeing how this game is now half tsukihime and half FGO i guess im just not gonna get it.
KOF XV: similiar to 2002um, I really like this game and wish I had it in me to put more hours into it. I just think KOF is fun. Really hate how Billy ended up in this game because that’s my dude but terry and kukri are still cool and Shigo is on the way as well. We’ll see.
Not Traditional Fighters:
Nick all stars brawl: I’m a huge fan of Slapcity so I was onboard with this but honestly was just a flop for me. people understand that half the fun of melee is that the game is fast but games dont really understand WHY or HOW Melee is fast. Their solution is just to give people a million air dashes. The game feels mashy; even playing against people who knew more about what they were doing felt like tons of just air dashing and mashing out the safe airs, and if you’re really a gamer you knew jablock combos.  The psuedo 2.0 update helped the game on a small scale with voice acting and kinda fun items for castuals but I just wasnt having fun when playing this game. I liked Shredder tho
Multiversus: I still hop on this game a bit but I think I have similar issues with this game that I have with nick brawl, although i think MV is just better overall than NASB. Similarly just replaces movement related techs by giving people fast air dodges with long ranges and multiple uses. Still, it’s pretty fun, I think the 2v2 emphasis is a cool angle and there’s some cool characters. I still get a very It’s Mashy And Air Dashy feel from it but miles better than how it was in NASB, the F2P systems are fine and I hop on every once in a while. Also I can play Lebron and hes actually fun.
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
Tumblr media
not necessarily a pure multiplayer game, but hey i like playing with friends
I like MH, and I think Rise and it’s systems are all great, and I wanted to actually play it which was unlike how i felt after a few hours in Iceborne. But as i’ve said before, the modern game content implementations is the worst thing that’s happened in the Monster Hunter. I hate MH drip feed. I dont want to play MH a little bit every few months, I want to just go extremely hard for like 2-3 months. But that’s not good for Engagement Numbers. Of course with drip feeding a few monsters every few months is fucking up the gear game; because they want you to not just kill a monster once and close the game the gear from new monsters has to be worth grinding out, so every patch the previous tier of weapons and armors have to be put back for the new hotness... which also makes the grinding kind of worthless because the elemental set of SAs i grind out with afflicted is about to have multiple pieces of it get outdated and needed to regrind.
Still, the game is fun, switch skills and wirebug is fun as hell. This is one of my favorite interpretations of my already favorite weapon in rise SA. I just hate that the drip feed is the fate of this franchise now because I really cant stand it, but hey when this game gets its last update i’ll dive back in.
THE CARD GAME SECTION BEGINS NOW:
Yu-gi-oh Master Duel
Tumblr media
I did write a review about this game on backloggd so i’ll keep it short. YGO is a fun but devisie game, and the game’s Balls To The Wall At All Times gameplay is 100% not for everyone, but going balls to the walls also can rule.
MD as a client is pretty good, and is especially generous compared to most TCG clients, but the games lack of formats is painful. YGO is a particularly brutal BO1 game, and a lack of BO3 with sideboarding leads to frustrating laddering experience. Along with that, the game’s card list being multiple sets behind both TCG and OCG, and having a strange banlist that’s a combination of TCG/OCG and some half hearted BO1 hits leads the game to not really feel like an actual simulator for either of the games.
I don’t hate MD but BO1 no sideboarding has lead to constant utterly miserable metas where you fight floodgates or 45 step bazillion endboard negate combos which burned me after, you know, a solid 200 hours.
Marvel Snap
Tumblr media
It’s honestly remarkable that this game is good. I see most Brand: The Card Game! games to feel like just quick cash  grabs that never go anywhere, but they actually tried with this game, although i continue to lament on how games simply feast on the corpse of Artifact.
But yeah it’s fun. The power of the location cards alone do great to stop people from autopiloting turns, which would be a problem with this game if they didnt exist. It does lead to games sometimes being crapshoots and sometimes you just gotta take an L when X Mansion gives you quicksilver and your opponent infinianut, but all games being short and under 5 minutes makes it hard to get really mad when you get fucked. It does make the game’s signature Snap system, which lets you effectively gamble rank points, a very strange edition when location RNG can just fuck you over.
The game’s card collecting system is... weird but it is fairly F2P friendly ( even though ive bought all of the season passes lol). A lack of a way to just craft a card I want is frustrating, especially when you see a deck that’s cool and you’re just gonna have to wait forever to play it because you dont have like 3 of the cards needed for it, or just lack a strong lynchpin in an archetype (i STILL dont have Death man), and once you hit collection 4 opening like 3 crates without getting a new card is going to start getting really annoying.  Variants are a great way to do alt card art and there’s many that are pretty, although i mostly just spend my gold on new dailies for more chances at cards anyways.
it’s fun. god i really want more fucking cards man cmon.
Pokemon Trading Card Game Live:
Tumblr media
Also did end up writing a backloggd review on this (very recently too) so i’ll keep it short: Game is fun and client is fine. Great new player onboarding due to the game just giving you the shell for a meta deck, and the other starter decks feel more reflective of the actual game as compared to the previous PTCG client. Incredibly stingy currency makes F2Ping hardly feasible, and whaling in this game involves just buying bulk codes off ebay... which is remarkably cheap honestly but still. Also teh game jsut has miserably ugly avatars, really dont know why they committed to that design. It’s fine, but if you want to F2P i can’t recommend it.
And that’s it for multiplayer games I put a lot of time into this year. fortnite is fun and i wish i could play fighting games without getting annoyed.

This is the first Victory Royale I've had in a month and a half. I don't want to say this Fortnite season has been "bad" in so many words, because I think the new jungle area is great, but in terms of what they've done with it, it's very... perfunctory. Which has been a lot of this chapter. You'd be hard pressed to wonder if Fortnite's best days are behind it.
In the early days, Fortnite used to have mystery! Intrigue! Then it had story, which was messy and poorly told. Then it got slightly better told, at the cost of demystifying and fleshing out some of its characters in such a way that it started to feel kind of lame. The personality and tone I imprinted on Fortnite's mystery was not what they ended up going with. A common pitfall.
The opening season of this chapter, Chapter 4, served as kind of an epilogue for what had happened in Fortnite up to this point. AMIE, a robot character introduced partway through Chapter 3, needed help to travel the multiverse in search of the heroes we lost in the transition to Chapter 4. In the climax of Season 1 of Chapter 4, she said goodbye to Jonesy, the guy who was literally the face of Fortnite for most of its life, and both of them disappeared.
Keep in mind that, within the story they were conveying, Jonesy didn't go anywhere. Not that they ever told us. He just stopped being in the story. Hasn't been seen or heard from again. And when he left, he apparently took the all of Fortnite's ongoing plot threads with him, because Chapter 4 Season 2 pretty much ignored everything and was about some kind of weird cyberpunk clan war. You had to "unite the clans" by doing some incredibly basic stuff like "hit an antenna with your stick." It wasn't terrible, but it didn't have anything to do with what we'd been dealing with for four years now, and by the end of the season it was clear things were coasting on fumes.
The thing about Fortnite's story is that, love or hate it, it provided secondary gameplay. It took some of the focus away from solely just winning a match and gave you a broader sense of accomplishment. Even if you only managed to finish 20th or something, maybe you got a couple of quests done and leveled up the battle pass. And, once they started doing voiced quests, maybe you got a little bit of somewhat amusing dialog to go with it. It was flavor, even if the flavor wasn't always what you wanted to taste at that particular time.
Now here we are in Chapter 4 Season 3 and things are the thinnest they've maybe ever been. A vast jungle has spread out, taking up close to a third of the entire island. It's full of ancient ruins, and there's just... nothing about it that matters.
Fortnite's story was always ongoing. You received new story quests every week or two, give or take. The map itself was always static, but things would evolve week by week. A story event might see a building get destroyed, and as the season progressed, something would happen to those ruins. Clean up vehicles would spawn around them, and trucks carrying rubble away would appear further and further down the road in every update. Fortnite's island felt alive, like people were living and working there behind the scenes in between matches.
As of this chapter, it's happening less, and less, and less. As seasons got longer, wait times between new story quest branches got longer. Last season things came to a head, with new additions to the story hitting every month and a half. You could often finish the next branch of story quests within an hour of their release, only to be told "Additional quests will be available in 48 days!"
And now, halfway through this season, those sorts of updates have grinded to a standstill. The jungle is our one big geographical update and the rest of the map hasn't been touched. I subscribe to someone on Youtube called PlaystationGrenade because he used to do these great videos breaking down all the fun changes every update, and last season he just outright gave up because there was nothing going on anymore.
There haven't even been any story quests at all this season -- audio logs are scattered around the jungle hinting at something big on the horizon, but they're mainly teasing what is probably going to be the end of Chapter 4 in December or January. It's July.
(There was a time where Fortnite didn't reboot the entire map every single year, and maybe that's contributing to this problem.)
The best we've gotten is a quest category called "Snapshots" which, since the season's launch on June 8th, has contained exactly one single snapshot. There's no plural there.
So it's not that I hate what they've done this season, it just feels like they drop a new biome on us and check out, and it's been a problem that's getting worse over time.
It maybe wouldn't bother me so much if it wasn't for the fact they spent years and years and years building up all this lore, all these characters, all of this story, and then just cut that all off at the knees and dip. I would accept this as the sunsetting of Fortnite, but it feels like there's unfinished business, and I'm sure it's not as though Fortnite is suddenly "out of money", you know? It just feels like they've stopped trying, or at least stopped trying in ways that matter.
Salt in the wound is that, perhaps to make up for how little there is to do this season, it feels like they've really cranked the heat up on their matchmaking algorithm. I'm not one to complain about the perils of "skill based matchmaking" (SBMM) but these last couple seasons have thrown me into the deepest end of the pool where I clearly do not feel comfortable in. All my games are full of people who are miles above my skill level, snap to my face, and melt me in one or two shots. And, without decent quest content or meaningful map evolution to act as a buffer, it's starting to feel real stale playing this game. It really does feel like Epic's top shelf creative talent is focusing their attention somewhere else, and these kinds of scraps is all that's left for Fortnite.
Even if they're just trying to go back to the raw, original Fortnite gameplay of being a Battle Royale first and foremost, to that I say... once you lean so much on story and story quests, that's not a genie you can just put back in the bottle. Especially if their grand ending is "everybody died and the few remaining survivors stopped caring." I didn't love Fortnite's story, but if they've gone this far, they should at least wrap it up.
Of course, it wouldn't be the first time Epic ended something like this on a wet fart, I guess.

im very conflicted about playing ovw2. i stopped playing ovw1 years ago back when all the controversies started, and actiblizz is a truly shit and vile company full of terrible people. but i still love the characters and the content the fandom creates for it (your blog, as an example). i know ovw2 is f2p now, and while i would not drop any money for any content ingame, but i know that player metrics is still a form of support for the game itself? i genuinely miss ovw1 and playing the game but i really, really do not want to support actiblizz. what were your own thoughts on this, or i guess maybe a bit of advice to help me make a decision for myself? like i said i really loved the gameplay. it was some of the most fun i had. but i am super conflicted about how to feel about playing. so i figured i would get an opinion on this given you have mentioned before playing ovw2 and if it feels comparable to how ovw1 was
The 5v5 and the battle passes are the biggest shifts, that and the fact that 2CP maps are no longer available in regular quickplay modes (they have been available in the arcade though). I'm still trying to figure out the experience system--basically it's a Fortnite-esque system where you work your way up through levels in the battlepass, and with each level you get a cosmetic. This new system is kind of a slog and to be honest I kind of miss the old lootbox system because at least you could look forward to multiple items or at least in-game currency upon leveling up--the new system basically has you like "I can't believe I'm grinding for a damn Sigma voiceline just to get to that Cassidy skin two levels after."
The ability to earn in-game currency is really reduced, but your "legacy currency" from OW1 carries over--but it's static. Like "I'm afraid to spend it" static. You can also get experience bonuses by completing challenges. So this kind of forces you to play flex, tank, and so on, so it is interesting that there's this regularly updating thing that incentivizes you to mix up your gameplay and collaborate with other players more. 5v5 is still... messy. I'm starting to understand the general concept is that this game mode is more about rapidly maneuvering around the map and flanking even when you're on defense, but it's still very messy with regards to slower utility supports like Ana and Zenyatta. They're continuing to tweak the game.
Honestly I think the decision to let go of Overwatch ultimately boils down to what you think will make you happier. I mean, I still play it because I got really attached to the characters and the community it introduced me to, and I've got friends in the game where basically the game is our preferred medium of communication. But ActiBlizz sucks. Big time. But it's also messy because there are people within Blizzard who are trying to fight for better working conditions and a better workplace environment--Blizzard definitely represents some of the worst bro and crunch culture of the gaming industry but it's not really monolithic.
Like, in terms of my creative output, I'm currently working to take my fankids and put them in their own original fiction because like, I love them and I think they deserve better than to be stuck in that property forever. There's a saying in yoga to "let go of that which no longer serves you" and I'm constantly stuck with this question of "how much did I/do I get out of it vs how much did I put into it", and I don't want to fall into a sunk cost fallacy. And that's the tough part because the fandom and community aspect of it brought so much to the table, so it wasn't just my writing, it was my friends' writing and art, and it's every single ask you guys send because I genuinely love working with all the prompts you guys send me.
So honestly I can't answer your question. It's going to come down to you and what you get out of the game and the community. I've seen a lot of people leave the community, but a lot of them were also people who spent a frankly baffling amount of their fandom time fighting for their lives with complete idiots on twitter, yelling at Blizzard for Pharah or whoever their fave was not being the center of every update, and forgetting there's such a thing as a block button and cultivating your fandom experience. Like, a lot of the Overwatch experience is what you put in, so that's why there's this whole spectrum of who's stayed and who's left. To be honest, I am working on expanding my horizons after 5 years of hyperfixating, plus I've seen some decent success with readership for non-fandom stuff, but I also don't want to give up the joy the playing and creating have given me and just try and sink all that passion somewhere else.
Ultimately it's going to come down to you and how much you get out of it. Though honestly you've already gone years without it, I think you're going to be okay.

What type of games is your dad playing
This might be hard to find out for you, but for a bunch of older-generation videos and Pc gamers like us is very simple. We give the top 5 genres for every kind of Dad. Mobile games are not included. We include also games you can connect with your Dad.
Yes, everyone is playing these free games and we love them. We will not be talking here about Fantasy Football. There are big e-sports competitions all around the world and actually, millions just like to watch other people playing like a football WorldCup. The most popular games this time right now are Ego shooters like Fortnite. The game has a healthy population of between 2.9 and 4 million users playing Fortnite on a daily. Many Kids have permission to play it because of the cartoonish style. Is still a shooting game .....
Warzone alias Modern warfare, alias Call of duty is popular since the PlayStation 2 era. In a time when the PS was grey and in this time very affordable in every household. They just remake it for every platform with a new story. Most Dads at this time have their best time and might unite back with their old clan. There are also Overwatch, Apex, Destiny 2, Warframe., Pubg, and Counter-Strike.
For more strategy or roleplayer genre Games we recommend Dota 2, Star Wars the old republic, and Diablo Immortal. There are many more but they are the most popular with lifetime never-ending updates.
All of these games are free to play but in-game purchases are very common for this kind. More resources, a new weapon, or just a season pass... you name it. Unfortunately, they are not all on the same platform. It might be Steam, Xbox, PlayStation Store,
The beauty of the genre is that you use your brain and imagination. They are stress relieving. Every good action game adventure has its own character of fascination, The landscape and some NPC are perfectly detailed and just beautiful, and the battle system is perfectly balanced I will show here some games every dad like to play or is at least interested in it.
God of War. This game is going far back in the past on all PlayStation platforms. The story follows Kratos, a Spartan warrior and later the Greek God of War, who was tricked into killing his family by his former master, the original Greek God of War Ares, and later Zeus himself.
Now the God of war is back and he has a son now you don't know that his father a god is. It's a beautiful Father and child bonding story just a Dad would understand. Trust me on this. You don't have to play the first 3 games of this genre, there are more hack and slay. However, I recommend playing or owning first the God of war game which is about 1000 years after the trilogy for about 20 bucks, and then the newest God of War Ragnarok where their adventure continue.
Eldering
Since the game launched not so long time ago, most of them agree that it's beautiful, detailed, and absorbing, but intimidating for newcomers. While critics seem to concur that it will stand as one of the best video games of the year, The main reason for Elden Ring's initial popularity was how difficult the game is. Not only are the battles incredibly challenging, especially with some of the game's most ferocious and deadly bosses, but players are also punished significantly if they die. This game is for hardcore gamers and is best with the Dark soul games years back to the mirror.
we make this game our top 2 number two because is very simple to play together online. In Roblox, each player can create games and maps for other people to try and play, making it a challenge in and of its own.
There is for every genre something. The requirements to play online are minimal, works on a laptop with no graphics card and android systems. You just have to create an Account with 2 different Email addresses.
It is the perfect game for Dads to start connecting with their Kids. Just try it out. There is also an in-game purchase available called Robux.
With over 238 million copies sold, according to Mojang, Minecraft is hands down the best-selling game in the world. For a game to achieve over 100 million copies sold is a momentous feat that only a tiny handful of games have accomplished, and Minecraft has rocketed past that into significant milestone after milestone.
and besides, that is like Lego in digital. And Lego is for every age, Studies have found evidence that video games can increase processing speed, cognitive flexibility, working memory, social skills, and problem-solving skills. Hands up it is the best long-term game for dads.
Hope it was helpful to everyone. There is much more content to check out on Fatherlygifts
Every comment would make us happy. Subscribe for the new content.

Disney plans a $1.5B ‘universe’ with Fortnite maker Epic Games
Tumblr media
The Walt Disney Firm is investing $1.5 billion in Fortnite and Unreal Engine maker Epic Video games, the two companies announced Wednesday. Collectively, they’ll construct “an all-new video games and leisure universe that may additional increase the attain of beloved Disney tales and experiences,” in keeping with the information launch. The partnership is awaiting regulatory approval, however one thing is anticipated “soon-ish,” according to an Epic Games video. “The Walt Disney Firm and Epic Video games will collaborate on an all-new video games and leisure universe that may additional increase the attain of beloved Disney tales and experiences,” a Disney consultant wrote in an announcement. “Disney may also make investments $1.5 billion to accumulate an fairness stake in Epic Video games alongside the multiyear venture.” Particulars on Disney and Epic Video games’ “persistent universe,” which is described as being “a world-class video games expertise and interoperating with Fortnite,” are scarce, besides that it’ll be a spot devoted to all issues Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar. The announcement additionally famous it might be a spot the place individuals can “play, watch, store and have interaction with content material, characters, and tales” from these Disney franchises. It seems like Disney is trying to create a metaverse-like product that’s a one-stop store for the corporate, without having to go anyplace else. A picture revealed alongside the information launch exhibits a minimum of 4 separate worlds dotted with totally different Disney franchises and corporations. There’s one island the place Marvel and Lucasfilm dwell in concord, whereas Wreck-It Ralph has a excessive rise instantly throughout from a Nightmare Earlier than Christmas park. It’s not in contrast to the maps Disney makes of its real-life theme parks. “This marks Disney’s largest entry ever into the world of video games and presents vital alternatives for progress and enlargement,” Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned in an announcement. “We will’t anticipate followers to expertise the Disney tales and worlds they love in groundbreaking new methods.”
Tumblr media
Picture: Epic Video games, The Walt Disney Firm Disney characters are already no stranger to Epic Video games: You may make Spider-Man, Darth Vader, and Jack Skellington struggle in Fortnite. That’s on high of Fortnite’s Marvel Nexus Struggle occasion from 2020, which spanned an entire season. It was additionally introduced on Wednesday that Rocket League, developed by Epic Video games-owned Psyonix, will get a The Mandalorian update and occasion, which runs from Feb. 7 to 21. Equally, Lego and Sony made an enormous funding into Epic Video games in 2022, every doling out $1 million to the Fortnite maker. The fruits of that partnership have been revealed this 12 months with Lego Fortnite, a Minecraft-like open-world constructing recreation. It smashed participant data at launch, reaching 2.45 million concurrent gamers, and it continues to be widespread. That, plus the discharge of Fortnite’s Rocket Racing and Fortnite Competition video games, drew 7.6 million concurrent gamers at launch. With this success, it’s no shock Epic Games is valued at $31.5 billion as of 2022. Fortnite alone brings in billions of {dollars} in income and solely continues to develop. All these successes, nevertheless, are in stark distinction to the truth of Epic Video games’ enterprise; the corporate is spending greater than it earns, in keeping with CEO Tim Sweeney. Epic Video games additionally laid off 16% of its workforce, or about 830 individuals, in late September. “For some time now, we’ve been spending far more cash than we earn, investing within the subsequent evolution of Epic and rising Fortnite as a metaverse-inspired ecosystem for creators,” Sweeney wrote in an electronic mail to workers in September. “I had lengthy been optimistic that we may energy by way of this transition with out layoffs, however looking back I see that this was unrealistic.” Whereas companies like Meta, Microsoft, and even Disney itself have pulled again on metaverse initiatives, Sweeney has saved Epic Video games heading in the right direction, even when it meant huge investments and shedding workers. His imaginative and prescient for the Fortnite metaverse is the one factor that’s remained constant through the years. This Disney partnership could also be a technique that really comes into focus. If I'm honest, I'm not excited for the Fortnite update (?)
It looks cool and everything, but it takes me a lot to get used to things, so, new map + a bunch of new additions is overwhelming for me. I mean, when one single gun was removed in past seasons I had really hard times, sometimes even didn't even played because I didn't felt comfortable.
It took me this whole month before realizing the end of the OG season didn't meant going back to the season 4 map, but getting into a whole new one, and that kind of killed my enthusiasm (?). I hope to enjoy it, at least a bit (?

Fortnite OG
Fortnite is your average battle royale game with guns, explosives etc. But the main difference from other battle royale games is the original mechanic they have, which is building. This game has recently had an update which is called the og update, (og means original for people who don't know). This update has brought back a lot of things back from the early updates of the game such as the weapons, vehicles, skins and mainly the original map/areas.
The latest update has had many current players excited to play the original game again as well as some new players, but it has also brought back many og players to the game, which includes me. I have to say that the update has brought me back to the game and after a long time since playing the game I am enjoying it even more, I am even learning how to build which is a staple part of the game, but I haven't been interested in learning how until now. The og areas in the map have also been fun because it has been bringing back good memories of when I used to play the game.
Overall this update was a good way to keep players playing the game as well as bringing in some more players.

Everything You Need To Know About Fortnite Chapter 4: Season OG
Tumblr media
Fortnite Chapter 4: Season OG goes live in a few hours once its downtime is complete, and it brings players back to 2018’s Chapter 1 map, with throwback weapons, loot, vehicles, and more, too. While it’s technically Season 5 of Fortnite Chapter 4, which follows the previous Last Resort season, developer Epic Games is calling it Season OG, and it makes sense considering how much of Fortnite 2018 is making an appearance.
The throwback nostalgia continues throughout the season because each new update brings with it a different phase of Fortnite Chapter 1’s past, starting with Season 5. That means weapons like the Assault Rifle and Pump Shotgun, and vehicles like Shopping Carts, will be featured in both Zero Build and regular Battle Royale Fortnite.

While each update listed below brings new weapons and more to Season OG, all based on previous Chapter 1 seasons, Epic says some of the unvaulted gear will remain throughout the updates while others will stay for just that update. Below is part of what’s being unvaulted:
Season 5: The Return of Tilted, Greasy, and Risky

First released during Chapter 1: Season 2, Tilted Towers is a point of interest on the island that will remain until the Season 9 update of Season OG. Alongside Tilted Towers, Epic has added back All Terrain Karts, other vehicles, and some traps from the original Season 5 of Chapter 1. This includes the Assault Rifle, Pump Shotgun, and Hunting Rifles. The Damage Trap, Grappler, and Boogie Bomb are unvaulted now, too, as are the aforementioned ATKs and Shopping Carts.
Season 6: Darkness Rises in Loot Lake
Tumblr media
After the v27.00 update goes live on November 9, players will find that darkness has risen in Loot Lake, bringing with it weapons from Fortnite Chapter 1: Season 6 like the Double Barrel Shotgun, Clinger, and Six Shooter. Plus, the Quadcrasher, Mounted Turret, and more return alongside the Chiller Trap and Port-a-Fortress (note: the Chiller Trap and Port-a-Fortress will not be in Zero Build modes). And finally, the Driftboard makes its way onto this island with this update as well.
Seasons 7 and 8: Of Chill and Treasure
Tumblr media
Update v27.10 will feature both Chapter 1: Season 7 and Season 8 starting November 16 after it goes live. It brings with it a snow biome, Frosty Flgiths, pirate camps, swashbuckling gear, and more. Weapons include the Flint-Knock Pistol, Minigun, and Quad Launcher. Other items include the Poison Dart Trap, Itemized Glider Redeploy, and Buried Treasure (the Poison Dart Trap will not be in Zero Build, though). On the vehicle front, players can use the X-4 Storming, and if you’re struggling to take it down, try the Pirate Cannon that lets you launch teammates into the air.
Season 9 and X: Blast Off!
Tumblr media
On November 23, update v27.11 will go live, and it celebrates Fornite Chapter 1: Season 9 and Season X. As such, weapons like the Heavy Sniper Rifle hit the island alongside other loot like the Proximity Grenade Launcher, Air Strike, and Junk Rift. Plus, this update adds the Storm Flip and Jetpack to the mix as well as The Baller.

Fortnite Chapter 4: Season OG Ranked
As usual with a new season, your rank has been reset in Chapter 4: Season OG. You only need to play one ranked match to have your rank revealed; your performance in your first match does not determine your initial rank placement, but it does reveal your rank and then updates your progress bar based on your performance in that specific match. Epic warns that matchmaking in higher ranks will likely take some time, especially if you were previously in a lower rank.
“With Fortnite OG being a short season, rank progression will be faster at the higher and middle ranks to accommodate,” Epic writes in a press release. “Players will be penalized less for being eliminated early in a match and will have slightly faster increases to their rank progression bar. Additionally, we’ve made progression faster for players in the Bronze ranks, so friends queueing up together across ranks will see more constant progression.”
When you jump off the Battle Bus in a ranked match, you’ll be given a Ranked Urgent Quest. By completing certain amounts of Ranked Urgent Quests, you’ll unlock special in-game rewards. Complete just one Ranked Urgent Quest during Fortnite Chapter 4: Season OG to unlock the Chapter 1-inspired Ranker’s Tags Back Bling pictured below. It will display the color of the highest rank you’ve reached this season.
