Whither Our Equilibrium?

Things have been slightly out of balance since returning from our time in Oregon. By things I mean simply "life."

Returning to our routine life here in Tucson has been a little more difficult than we expected it to be. Maybe it's because I'm now officially in my 70s.

But it's not just me. Nancy is not adjusting well either.

In part, we think, it's the continuing heat here in Southern Arizona. Another 100-degree-day is expected today, then the forecast shows it cooling off... Ha! The following days show highs in the upper 90s.

It all started a week ago, when we had invited some friends for dinner, so we could catch up after our time away. At the last moment they called to cancel because one of them had gotten sick from something they had eaten at lunch.

Then, while fixing dinner for ourselves, we discovered we had the wrong pasta. Instead of the angel hair we have used on a regular basis of late, we found out we had regular spaghetti, which took at least twenty minutes to cook. We stared at the pan the entire time, yelling for the pasta to "hurry up!"

Next, after shopping for a new refrigerator last Tuesday and scheduling delivery for tomorrow, our ancient Kenmore decided to give up its job on Thursday. At least the upper half. The freezer continued to do just fine.

So we hustled to find ways to preserve things, including handing off a few items to our neighbor. We stuck some small things in Nancy's wine fridge — which is otherwise currently unoccupied — and put a lot else into cooler bags with the ice packs we have on hand.

Surprisingly, the top half of the Kenmore suddenly returned to working yesterday, so we returned some things to their place. But not everything, thinking we should play it safe until the new unit is put in place tomorrow.

One other thing throwing a monkey wrench into our life was the crack that began to develop in the windshield of our car. We heard a pop recently, which usually indicates a rock has hit the windshield, but not until late last week did the crack finally show up. And then it started growing, reaching close to 12 inches by this morning.

Fortunately we were able to schedule a replacement appointment for later today. And they come to us, which will work, since after Nancy's appointment with her doctor this morning, we'll likely be hunkering down for the rest of the day to avoid to heat.

And lunch will be leftovers from our Mexican food meal yesterday, so we need not venture out for that.

All this seems fairly innocuous, but adding everything together really has thrown us off our game. We have said the "Serenity Prayer" several times in an effort to quiet our spirits. And we have talked about what our futures might bring, given our ages and our financial position and the climate changes that will continue.

We trust that eventually our equilibrium will return. At least briefly. And we must be prepared to deal with whatever else shows up. That's the way life works.

Day 163:  Saturday June 12, 2021 - “Turkey Parade”

We succsessfully birthed in the hospital which meant it was at minimum a 24 hour recovery stay there too.  William’s first full day out in the world would be spent socializing with the turkey parade in and our of our room; which while we longed for some quiet restful time to ourselves as new family, we enjoyed the community of care providers working to prop us up and get a solid start.  First was Mary, our grandmotherly day shift nurse who fawned over William from first introduction until she pushed us out to the parking lot to say goodbye.  A neighbor, we found, we’ll be seeing her again in the weeks ahead to express gratitude and let her beam while holding her little baby.  Then there was our pediatrician who made the rounds and not only discovered a health issue that needed address, but stayed on and made sure to pull all the strings to get it addressed so that we didn’t have to worry or stress about a thing...granted this made for a few extra tests, and ultrasounds and a transfer to another hospital - but it was just more people for our little lion to meet. When we told Mary how much we appreciated Dr. M, she got emotional when she agreed and shared how much extra he does, whenever we can.  A theme we found of most everyone in these early days.   St Joseph’s, as it would turn out, was the perfect place for us to land; the road always provides and life rewards all of the time.  We wouldn’t have written the script in quite this way - but if we had to experience a plot twist, the love and support we found here in Doctors and Nurses was the saving grace.  Then there was Jessica, the lactation specialist that came and spent time with Audrie, securing that important latch, teaching how to pump, and even offering sweet hugs to support the new mama.   There were others through the day too - the food delivery, and the successful hearing tests, the ultrasound techs, and each in their own way, made sure that we knew that we had a really good healthy boy on our hands - a joy baby.  In the short moments between visitors, we were starting to see that too and it inspired us in our first full day as parents to be fully engaged in making good solid decisions.

Before transferring to TMC for the night, we hatched a plan to meet some very important people - the Grandmas!  They’d been waiting patiently through the slow trickle of updates across a busy day but as dusk fell in Tucson a plan was hatched to have Kindra gather everyone in her suburban and transport us all together, providing the opportunity for a pitstop of stories and hugs, and first meetings of our new little one.   We packed William into his car seat for the first time, wrapped in a sweater that Grandma Laura had made him, and covered in a blanket that Grandma Deni had wrapped Audrie in as a baby.   A special moment - leaving the hospital and going outside into the world for the first time, if even just to go to another hospital.  But that hour in between was special.  The gang of grannies met us at the door as Mary wheeled Mama and Baby out....you could call it love at first sight, but you know they were all in love well before this moment.   It was special to pack all our stuff up and get the car seat in and roll out.  We landed at Fort Lowell Park where we gathered arond a picnic table and let each one take two turns holding and saying hello to our boy.  There had been so much interaction and story telling with strangers over the past 24 hours, it was unaccountably important to connect with people we loved; to feel that normalcy and security for a moment before heading back in for another two nights of hospital stay.  As wild of a flash this first full day will be in our mind’s eye - the perfect hour of connection will always be the highlight and the spontaneous event that we’ll be most grateful for.

That evening we’d settle into the pediatric unit at TMC preparing for a necessary surgery.  To our surprise, at 10pm, the surgeon joined us in our room and sat with us for as much time as was needed.  For all the fear around the idea of a newborn going into surgery, Dr. J made it as human as can be.  He took the time to answer all our questions and even the ones we didn’t know to ask.  He had us scheduled fo 1pm the next day, and unknown to us, that provided a fluke connection with our friend Jen to be his post-op nurse.  We were in great hands. We slept well as we could in our new room and debriefed the day while keeping strong positive perspective that everyone was taking real good care of us, including the universe - that it was all working the way it was supposed to, we were making good decisions as a team, and above all else, our sweet baby boy was a complete Joy to everyone that he met.  William had no idea that all this bustle wasn’t as expected.  Our only goal remained the same, as we shut out the lights on this first full day -> to make sure he felt all our love.   Looking back on all the little moments and the way he settled into us as I started to drift off, I was sure that he did, which made it so incredibly easy for me to pop up whenever Audrie asked, as a way of expressing that.

While I do love doing ID, I am of an age (497 in dog years) where I want to see more of the world/US before the inevitable decline and dirt nap. The title of Fred Allen's autobiography, Treadmill to Oblivion, is increasingly applicable to life.

So I hopped off the treadmill last week for a long weekend in Tucson. Fantastic place to visit and hike, except they a have ways to go before they match PDX in food and beer. But they are a lot cleaner. The one thing I can say about Portland when I visit other cities is that Portland is, for a major metropolitan area, squalor central. Piles of garbage and litter most of which comes from the homeless. They do not seem all that interested in recycling. So if you want great food, drink, and hikes, just remember it comes with a large order of filth.

Plus, we have measles, thanks to some of the worst vaccination rates in the US.

The patient is a young, otherwise healthy, female, who comes in with abdominal pain and fevers 6 weeks after delivery. In the time before admission, she had a case of cellulitis, treated with Augment and Bactrim. Sigh. I was not involved.  And an IUD was placed.

The evaluation shows the usual signs of infection and a distended tender abdomen. The IUD was removed and a culture of the cervix grew Group A Streptococcus.

In the last few decades “climate change” (long term shifts in temperature and climate due to human activity)/Global warming has accelerated and highly affected our lives worldwide. Within our own country it has made a big change on safety, health, and stability on our people and infrastructure. The tornadoes that hit the midwest and the south on 12/10/21 have so far killed 90 people and numerous people. At least  mostly all working class, and the majority still were working at factories and doing deliveries. Considered the worst tornado Kentucky ever had, it has at least traveled 200 miles. It has killed scores of people in a candle factory and at least six dead in an amazon building ,120,000 plus were without power, also an expected increase of the death toll can be increased as cleanup and search crews work throughout the weeks. 

In Arizona the whole state has broken summer records in June. Record breaking days of 113 plus days foremost of the month throughout the state. 2020-21 were officially some of the worst fire seasons the state has seen. Along with lockdowns and the pandemic numbers on the surge, A lot are in danger of heat strokes and skin cancer rates. This will also affect agriculture and food production. This drought and heat will possibly make at least six counties in Arizona uninhabitable if Climate change does not get addressed and worked on, “sustainable development” (development that occurs without depleting or damaging the natural environment) is the only option in our climate and geography. We need to stop wasting water, develop better recycling programs, carpool and have more electric trains going around town. Only Tucson and Phoenix get any type of help and back up during this time, the rest of the state is left to fend off anything to themselves. 

Environmental racism- A lot of the Native tribe reservations make up the rest of the state. One of them is the Navajo nation that makes up the North Eastern and Central eastern part of the state. During the major surges of 2020 a lack of supplies and medical staff made deaths sweep across the navajo nation. High rates of poverty and health diseases (diabetes) made the surges a nightmare. From the Grill

Nancy and I made babaganouj on Saturday for the very first time. We grilled the eggplant in the back patio on our little hibachi, then took the cooked innards and mixed them with tahini, garlic, lemon juice, parsley, and salt. We used a food processor to do all the blending, not having a mortar and pestle handy in our kitchen.

One eggplant yielded a decent-sized serving, which we scarfed down with pita bread. The results were every bit as good as the version we get from Zayna's, our favorite Middle Eastern restaurant. It’s not the only place in town that serves it. Tucson is fortunate to have a good number of places specializing in Mediterranean cuisine. There are two others within five minutes of our home.

Spellings for this tasty dish vary, and the same basic recipe is also called by other names around the world. It's the absolute best possible use for eggplant that I can imagine. And certainly one of the easiest to prepare.

Cooking it over on open flame is key, as is true for any number of foods. The resulting smoky flavor truly is the highlight. And pita is by far the best delivery system, though we have been known to simply spoon it directly into our mouths. Licking it off our fingers is not out of the question either.

September 2018

Oh man - it sure was hard to stay cool, this 9th chapter of the year.    AC and sat talking at the end of August and deep sighed and said “oh man, September is going to be tough to get through” -- our first real month of Marriage (given that August was honeymoon month) would deal its share of challenges with nights spent at home together being in the single digits and every weekend booked out.  I cant ever remember a time where we dreaded the grinder of a month ahead.   And not because it was anything terrible - just BUSY.   It felt like several months packed into one with a work-ramble out to Australia/Tasmania, a parental visit for MSU game, leasing a new home, 2 weddings and a funeral in one weekend, and oh yea, moving into said new house.   The big question of the month was “when?”  - When would we move out of storage?  When will I see you next? When does the services start?  When are we getting groceries?  When does the next plane leave? When do I get to sleep??

And about that house - we finally laid a root in Tucson - leasing a house for the year.  The first real house we’ve been able to live in together and make a home.   Feels good so far - especially after this last week getting it unpacked a little.  From here we look to the end of the year with some stability, less action and more time together to get a solid reset.

So now that I survived all the hustle and stress its fun to look back on the jam packed 30 days...   sunrise at the Opera House, picking apples with AC and Deni, an ochard scootcher, an outdoor wedding in Aspens, Carrying AC across the threshold of a home, prawn pizza delivery, seeing family back in Breckenridge over beers at Anshutz, singing the spartan fight song in sun devil stadium, thai food on 5th street.   Pretty blessed life, out here living as a verb- so long as I can keep up with my self!

Chapter 9

I’d never been fishing before. It wasn’t something you really did a lot of in Tucson.

Most of what I knew about childbirth came from TV, when people would boil water and make bandages out of sheets. I was pretty sure modern medicine had advanced past that, but I hadn’t bothered taking any sort of labor class. There’d been too much else going on, and I figured I could always do it “later.”

Right, heaven forbid that we cut into Eugenie's precious “sitting around and feeling bored” time.

“It’s too early,” I said from the backseat of the Reeds’ car. Candace had taken it upon herself to drive because she was certain Charles would “follow the speed limit.” He rode in the passenger seat, carrying a bag they’d long ago packed on my behalf. “This has to be something else. I’m only ... what, twenty-nine weeks? I’ve got eleven more to go.”

It's baffling to me that she's been seeing doctors frequently, but not one of them apaprently bothered to tell her that multiple babies tend to come earlier.

Or, I thought, what would’ve happened if they’d been born in the Otherworld? Because I had to assume they would’ve come early there too, in a position not suitable for natural birth. Dorian had seemed confident of his healers’ magic to handle anything, but I wasn’t so sure—especially considering the gentry track record with infants.

This is going back to an earlier comment of mine of how many mothers and babies died because they couldn't understand things like “breech baby”?

I gazed at my children and sighed happily. “We’re exactly where we need to be.”

Chapter 9 summary: Eugenie is on edge until time starts to pass, and nothing happened as a result of her banishing the spirit.

As time passes, she begins to long for Dorian's company, too. Which is weird to her.

Evan takes her out fishing one day, and they talk about what Eugenie wants to do after the babies are born. She says that she hasn't really thought that far ahead, and is only just trying to get through the pregnancy. However, she's grateful for Evan for leaving it open-ended enough. Says that most people are well-intentioned, but just openly tell her what she should do, rather than to ask for her opinion.

The next day, Voltage shows up, and says that Dorian and Maiwenn acted in unison to send him to Eugenie. She finds the fact of them working together to be difficult to believe, but she refuses to listen to the message that they sent with the spirit. Says that if there was any real trouble, Dorian would have tried to get in contact with Roland, rather than to send Voltage. She sends him away, but not before ordering him to return to her should anybody try to order him around again.

About a week after that, Eugenie awakes to a feeling of wrongness. She goes to Candy and says she thinks she might be in labor. They race her to the hospital, where the initial intake doctor is optimistic that they'll be able to pause the labor. But as Eugenie is examined, they say that this is happening, and it's happening now. However, thanks to the fact that they're early, the babies need to be delivered via C-section, because they're turned wrong.

So they cut Eugenie open and deliver the babies. The girl comes first, followed by the boy, and they're both quickly swept away to NICU. The doctor later sits with Eugenie and tells her that both babies are nearly 3 pounds, with under-developed lungs. So they'll remain in the NICU for a while. They take her down to the NICU, where they show her the babies. Eugenie is overwhelmed at the sight of them with all of the tubes coming out from them. She names them Ivy and Isaac.

Eugenie also thinks about what might have happened had she delivered these babies in the otherworld. There's no way that the delivery would have gone smoothly with only magic, not understanding things like C-sections. And forget about ensuring that the premature babies would thrive.

Chapter 10

I caught hold of his hand and tugged him forward. “Come meet your grandchildren.”

Chapter 10 summary: For the first two weeks, Eugenie tries to pump to supply her own breastmilk for her babies. But she thinks that her fae heritage is preventing it from coming in properly. The nurses are quick to assure her that formula is just as good as breastmilk. (Fed is best, after all.) It's so cold that people are literally freezing to death. And those who do survive have no food. Even Roland, who hates the fae, is like “Damn, this is too much torture.”

Dorian seems to think that this is the cause of the Yew kingdom, because they are 100% unaffected. Roland goes on to say that the fae are reduced to coming over just to get food and supplies.

They talk about pulling Eugenie out from Alabama so that nobody can discover where she had been, and where the twins are currently. Roland tells her to wait until she's gotten a chance to hold them before leaving.

Monthly Meal Plan + Grocery Haul: January 2021

  The new year has finally arrived!  I'm not sure what grocery shopping looks like in your neck of the woods now that there's yet another rise in COVID cases, but it's actually not too bad in ours.  For the most part you can select curbside pick-up or delivery if you desire.  And lately I desire.

The photo above and info below outline our monthly grocery shopping.  We will need  a few additional items: milk comes from our farmers market as does coffee for Jay (probably another $20.00 total for the month), and I may get some fresh greens in another 1-2 weeks (less then $10.00).

Our groceries for January came from BJ's and Healthy Living, a local health food store.  Typically we would also do a Hannaford order or a trip to the commissary, however, we are really well stocked on pantry and freezer items.  You'll notice there is no meat purchased.  Our freezers are fairly well stocked and we will actually be bartering with a farmer friend - our products for some of his chicken and pork, this weekend.  We are finally (FINALLY) getting eggs from the Coop Girls, and as you know, we put up a lot of veggies in the freezer from the summer garden.

I don't plan on returning to Healthy Living until March so I stocked up with that in mind.  We will probably place another BJ's order mid February-ish.

The total spent for January is anticipated to be $439.41 or just over $100.00/week.

 $269.41 (groceries already purchased) + $140.00 (bartered meat) + $30.00 (coffee, milk & greens anticipated to purchase throughout the month) = $439.41.  Our January purchases are partly for January and partly for the months to come.

More Than You Ever Wanted To Know About Our Groceries:

Healthy Living:

The Dandy Blend Herbal Coffee Alternative is AMAZINGLY good.  I absolutely love it for iced or hot "coffee".  It's kind of expensive and a bit of a splurge.  I purchased 2 bags which will last me through April or so.  The 14 oz bags cost $22.49 each.  I've looked on Amazon and they sell a slightly smaller (11 oz) bag for around the same price so this seems to be the best deal.

The Goji Berries are added to a trail mix (we already have the other ingredients on hand) for Jay that he eats daily.  Macular degeneration runs in his family and goji berries have been shown to help prevent this.  Plus they are high in antioxidants so we decided it was worth it regardless of whether or not it works to prevent M.D..  These bags are 8 ounces and $12.49 each.  I should have bought them at Amazon because I'm pretty sure I could have gotten them cheaper.  I'll research it and purchase them there going forward if it makes sense to do so.  The 2 bags should last him just about 2 months.

I know there are cheaper dairy alternatives then Oatly ($4.99/carton) but I really love Oatly.  I prefer the lowfat version but they were out of everything except for these 4 cartons. 

We bought 12 pounds of mixed yukon & red potatoes ($1.99/lb) and 5 pounds of sweet potatoes (I splurged and bought my FAVORITE Japanese Sweet Potatoes at $2.99/lb - I call them "cake sweet potatoes" because they are soooo sweet).  Oliver and I are on the last of the sweet potatoes that we harvested and stored in the fall.  I can't believe they are almost gone!!!  We go through a moderate amount of potatoes and only purchase them organic, and the absolute best ones we've found are at Healthy Living.  This is easily a 2 month supply of each.

I have a few apples and mandarin oranges left for fruit but Jay prefers grapes so I bought a bag of grapes ($2.99/lb) and I treated myself to a couple of grapefruit ($1.49/lb).  I typically try to only buy fruit that is $1.99 or less per pound (exception being the frozen berries & cherries), but that definitely didn't happen this month.

Que Pasa is our new favorite brand of tortilla chips.  They are organic, non-GMO, and reduced sodium.  We very rarely have chips but when we do it's tortilla for the win.  They were on sale (although I'm wondering if this is a permanent sale because they were on the same sale a few months ago when I last bought them...) at $2.99/bag.

I usually make my own bread and tortillas but I like to have a bit of each in the freezer just in case.  I've used up my freezer stash of both so I purchased a loaf of Dave's bread and a pack of limited ingredient corn tortillas and whole wheat flour tortillas for the freezer.

Not shown in the photo, we also bought a bag of frozen organic sweet cherries and a bag of frozen organic blueberries (3 lb bags for $13.99/ea.).  We have 2 bags of each in the freezer already.  We each eat a 1/2 cup of a mix of the two every single day so we should be good for a couple months.  I also bought Kiwi (3 lbs for $6.49) as yet another splurge because we haven't had them in forever and one bunch of organic bananas (2 lbs for $1.59).  We've found that our very favorite bananas are organic Chiquita.  They seem to be the creamiest.  I have no idea why, but the non-organic Chiquita's and other brands organic and non-organic just aren't the same.  Strange....

I keep riced cauliflower on hand in the freezer because it's one of the cheapest ways to buy cauliflower off season.  (I roast it from frozen in the oven to use as a veggie side)  I wanted to make some buffalo cauliflower though for veggie tacos, and I need pieces instead of having it riced so I bought a bag (2 lbs for $4.29).  Jay likes cooked cauliflower with cheese sauce so he'll have that as a side a few times too. 

We eat a lot of mushrooms and BJ's seems to have the best price on them so I bought 2 which will get us through a few weeks.  (24 oz containers for $4.99/ea.)

Pom Juice was a special request by the husband.  We don't usually buy juice but he requested it last month for the first time in a long time and has been enjoying it.  (48oz bottle $8.99)  I'm running low on frozen peas and frozen corn and BJ's carries the organic at a reasonable cost (each is 4 lbs for $6.99) so I stocked up.  I'm low on carrots too and their price isn't bad (5 lbs organic for $3.99).  Also not shown is a 3-pack of frozen pizza.  We keep a couple vegan frozen pizzas and a couple meat/cheese frozen pizzas on hand all of the time for the days we need something quick.  We still have 2 of the vegan so we just stocked up on the meat version (3 pack DiGiornio $13.99).

January's Meal Plan

My goal was to start posting our meal plans again, per request from many of you, but to also add photos of some of the meals this time around.  Unfortunately, I have yet to get in the habit of photographing dinner before it's served.  I hope to add this to the posts as I remember.

A Note About Our Meal Plans

I create monthly meal plans because it's what I've found to be easiest for me.  There may be some change but usually not much.  Changing works because I rotate the same 30+ meals so we would use the ingredients at some point over the next 30-45 days.  If we have perishables that need to be used up then that becomes priority and I may make changes to avoid food waste.

I usually make 2 separate meals - Jay and I eat completely different at this point.  He used to be willing to eat what I eat as his side but not so much anymore.  He's not a fan of whole grains and can only tolerate one type of veggie per meal.  So.....you can see that I tend to eat the same thing multiple nights because it's easy and I don't mind at all.  Where there's only one meal noted, I make a meat & cheese version for him and a vegan version for me.  Where there's no veggie side noted for him I use whatever I've got that needs using up or I select a frozen veggie.

You will notice that for Jays meals there are a few noticeable rotations.  

In general, chicken meals are Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  Pork is Tuesdays.  And Beef is Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.  This is in part due to the fact that he tells me it's illegal to serve chicken 2 days in a row.  (insert eye roll)  

Also, other then the occasional new recipe that I try, his meals rotate about every month and a half (a different rotation will show up for summer).  

Our Sundays rotate around the same 5 meals (Tamales, Tacos, Homemade Pizza, Pot Roast, and Meatballs) because it's our farmers market day which means I want something super simple to make.  I do not make the tamales, we love those by Tucson Tamale (not an affiliate link).  Around us we can find a small variety at Healthy Living.  Tucson Tamale offers meat, vegetarian, and vegan varieties and they are sooooo delicious.  They do use oil in all of their tamales so if you are completely oil-free this is unfortunately not an option for you.
