I actually really liked the animatronics being more childlike, especially when they were around Abby. Abby didn't have their traumas and hadn't been controlled by Afton (obviously through being put down and made to feel worthless, like we saw with him and Vanessa) and she made them feel childlike because she was childlike. Any other time they're on screen they're obviously in protection mode, protecting whatever it is that Afton is actually doing in the restaurant, and that's probably why they wanted her, or at the very least that's how Afton could use them to draw Abby and other children in.

They ARE children, traumatized children that have been stunted in their development by becoming ghosts and being shoved into these robots controlled by the man who killed them and who used various means to make them forget that fact. A man who wasn't above stabbing his own daughter and whose daughter was well enough aware of that to fear going against any programming he had given her. Vanessa's purpose was helping him keep people away from the pizzeria. That's why she got a job as a cop same as he became a Career Counselor to find only the most desperate people to work for shit pay at his failed business. Afton only uses people.
