Adventure awaits in the popular outback town of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. Here are 10 of the best things to do in Alice Springs.
[toc]
1. Watch the sunrise from a hot-air balloon
Say goodbye to the dawn on the tranquil desert in the hot air balloon ride with kangaroos, brumbies and camels roam underneath before touching wine, juice and light refreshments. In 2017, Outback Ballooning in Alice Springs launched Australia's largest balloon, which can accommodate 24 passengers along with the pilot.
2. Do the Alice attractions
Then head just out of town to the Kangaroo Sanctuary, where Chris 'Brolga' Barnes of the BBC’s ‘Kangaroo Dundee’ series rescues orphaned joeys, which you can feed and cuddle!
3. See the desert come alive
Learn about the thriving flora and fauna in Central Australia at Alice Springs Desert Park. Follow pathways through three desert habitats to the free-flying birds of prey show in the nature theatre. See local reptiles, bats, birds and Australian dogs in a cool, dark house. And hear how Aboriginal people find and prepare food, create forest drugs and store water.
4. Wander through beautiful gardens
Love nature? Spend half of all of the day exploring the Olive Pink Botanical Garden. Here, you can ask questions at the Visitor Center, enjoy a bite to eat from the cafe and meander on the short walking paths between the native flora and fauna on display.
5. Try one of the world’s best desert golf courses
Golf is a little different in Alice, where manicured trees and tackles are against the red MacDonnell Ranges. Golfers from all over the world love the challenge of this course, with narrow runways cut by rocky outcrops and where the rough is actually very rough.
There’s a pro shop, motorized buggies, floodlit driving range and putting green, and a clubhouse and restaurant.
6. Ride a camel at sunset
Spot kangaroos and birds, watch the ranges glow red under sunset skies and take in the peace of the desert on a camel ride through the Ilparpa Valley with Pyndan Camel Tracks. Gentle and well-trained camels, thanks to ‘a camel man, Marcus Marcus, who has been working with a camel for 30 years. Free pick up from Alice Springs accommodation.
7. Explore the West Macs
See black-footed rock wallabies near the permanent waterhole at Simpsons Gap. At noon, watch the walls of Standley Chasm glow red. Swim at Ellery Creek Big Hole. Explore Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen, and Ocher Pits, a sacred site still used by local Aboriginal people.
8. Explore the East Macs
Head east from Alice Springs to explore the East MacDonnell Mountains. See Aboriginal rock art at Emily Gap and picnic at nearby Jessie Gap. Follow the circular walking path at Corroboree Rock, then head to Trephina Gorge, one of the most amazing attractions in the East.
Further in N'Dhala Gorge (only four wheels from here), see over 5000 ancient stone carvings then wander around the ruins of the first town of Central Australia Australia at the Preserve Arltunga history. Explore the beautiful Ruby Gap, where small jewels are found.
9. Camp at Rainbow Valley
Plan the sunset in Rainbow Valley, a colorful sandstone block with bands that change from fiery brown to purple in fading light. Take a short walk to Mushroom Rock, an unusual sandstone block with a natural tunnel formed over millennia.
Take a day trip from Alice Springs (75km south, requires four wheels) or bring your equipment and camping. There are toilets, barbecues, and picnic tables.
10. Explore Albert Namatjira’s birthplace
Discover the settlement of Hermannsburg (1.5 hours west of Alice Springs), Central Australia's first town and home to the famous indigenous watercolor artist, Albert Namatjira.

Trying the same scene with oil pastels and again in watercolor. I don't have much experience with oil pastels, other than using them as a mark-making tool in my abstract cold wax paintings.
As always, all watercolors are handmade by me.

I don't remember if I shared this here, but here's a sketchbook page for a fall day a lot like this one.
I used my own handmade watercolors with pens and Derwent colored pencils.
This drawing really doesn't show them off, but all the same I have a few earth-color watercolor sets in my shop right now, if you'reinterested.

I'm making lamp black to add to my open stock watercolor collection. Each color is hand-mulled and cured over many weeks.
It's the most intense black I've made, and I enjoy using it almost like an ink or for dramatic moments - like the shadow under the bridge here:
