My interpretation of this art (it's from one of the Daydream Hour issues!) is that Chilchuck took the time to prepare the chest, wear the mimic costume, get inside and give his daughters a fun little jumpscare when they opened it, but they were either not impressed, didn't get it, or just wanted the candy, so he just went. Deep fatherly sigh.

Chilchuck made sure the division of labor was fair between all his daughters. All their hard work in doing chores were well compensated with kisses and hugs and also a small raise in allowance so they can buy the new Dungeon House and play dungeon.

It’s been years since the Chils girls have ever been called over for a ‘talk’ like their father has tonight. Now that they discuss it between them, the last time this happened was when they had to talk about the relationship between their parents.
So… not a lot of hope amongst the three.
Still, when they arrive at the bar Chilchuck suggested (because of course he did), he seems in a better mood than they thought.
“So he isn’t using me as a bad example again,” Puckpatti sighs to herself. Too many times she has been told she needs to try taking life more seriously. Meijack pats her little sister’s shoulder sympathetically.
The conversation was awkward – as they normally are with your distant parents – with “how you beens” and getting drinks done and out of the way. Chilchuck cuts to the chase.
“Uh, so…” he takes a breath. “I’ve started seeing someone.”
He takes the chance to hide his eyes from the varied reactions from the girls by taking a swig of his drink. Thank God these steins are made really big compared to half-foots.
Meijack merely widens her eyes, but she hasn’t said anything yet. Puckpatti lets out a loud “whaaaaaa…?!” in abject shock. Flertom, ever the romantic, is the one to stand up and slam her hands on the table.
“You better be treating ‘em better than you did Mama!”
“Fler,” Meijack warns, pushing her twin down onto her seat again by her shoulder. “Don’t be acting like that in a public place.”
Flertom huffs, crossing her arms. She may be a bit on the protective side. Since the separation of her parents, she’s been housing her mother. She directly heard her side of the story, and though she doesn’t think too badly of Chilchuck (she sent him a neckband to prove that) she doesn’t believe a relationship is the best thing for him if he hasn’t changed his ways.
Puckpatti tilts her head to the side. “Mmmmmaybe…” she trails off. “They aren’t a half-foot… uwaaahhh, what if Papa found a dwarf husband before us!?”
“That’s what you’re concerned about?” Meijack responds. “If they aren’t a half-foot, there’s a chance Papa might be taken advantage of.”
Unamused, Chilchuck watched the girls squabble amongst one another. Ever the stubborn types… maybe they got that from him. He sighs.
“You already met them at the dinner with King Laios,” he reveals, making the girls freeze in place.
Meijack is the first to react, counting the guests that joined them on her fingers. There’s the king and his sister, the king’s two advisors, the handsome dwarf, Papa, and…
All three sisters manage to pick up the signals together. Of course they remember you! You had been the most welcoming to the sisters, and somehow even made their Papa smile so fondly– they haven’t seen that in years.
“Thank goodness!” Puckpatti celebrates, leaning over to lie on the table entirely to reach over to her dad and give him a tight hug. “I was so scared you were going to die old, grouchy and alone!”
Meijack sighs again. “Patti—”
“No, no,” Chilchuck scoffs a breath of laughter. “I was hoping you’d be alright with it…”
“Of course we’d be okay with it.” Flertom snorts and covers her wide grin with her hand. “The way you looked at them was near cringeworthy. It’s like Puckpatti on speed dates.”
“Heeeeyyy!”
Chilchuck laughs gently, though he did take note of the mention of speed dating. He looks over at Meijack. She is always the most level-headed about these things. If she had something bad to say, then it’ll definitely be something worth considering.
Meijack, after taking a bit of her drink, sighs. She looks at her dad and echoes his smile. “As long as you’re both happy, I support ya.”
Relief. It washes over Chilchuck like an extra layer of clothes. Warm and happy, he pets Patti’s hair again and supports her as she crawls back into the chair.
All is well.
“Though if you get another kid outta this, you better be ready to face Ma’s wrath,” Flertom comments offhandedly.
Chilchuck flushes. “I’m not that kind of sleaze!”
“Sure you aren’t,” all the girls chorus with giggles and smiles. They’ve seen him with a few drinks in him.
The greying half-foot sighs, taking another swig of drink. They know him too well.
All is well.

Do you think maybe a large part also of why Chilchuck's wife left him was because of how much he changed after becoming an adventurer? He seemed naive and spirited once, but became more jaded the more dungeon crawling he did. I like to think with the new image of his wife that Flertom and Puckpatti's cheerful demeanor came from how Chilchuck was once as a child. But she accepted that people change. And yet that night, meeting how he is with his coworkers, reminds her of how he used to be.
Yes I do! I go into it in my masterpost on Chilchuck’s family, though I made it before we got his wife’s face reveal. If you want to see my thoughts on what things might have pushed her to leave I recommend you go to the ‘Possible strains on the marriage’ section!
Ooh I like your thoughts! Flertom and Puckpatti inheriting good cheer from him would be soo cute (it’d also be funny with how he’s like "Meijack, my daughter most like me" meanwhile the ones with the opposite of her personality got it from him. Sike Meijack’s like her mom the most lmao), but for Puckpatti at least I’m skeptical.
Chilchuck likes good cheer out of work sure, but he dislikes optimism/carefreeness. It makes him worry on if they can take care of themselves or if they’ll be able to make it (in part due to how he was himself tricked by parties in the past), so I’ve theorized that Puckpatti’s carefree demeanor is actually an effect of Chilchuck working out of home more and more as the years go by, and thus having the least of an influence on his youngest child, leaving his wife to do most of the raising and teaching lessons.
I don’t know what to make of his wife’s portrait yet, she does seem pretty jaded herself, or like she has a lot on her mind. Since it’s supposedly set into the present of canon, it could just be that she’s still affected and upset by having left him… Or maybe that’s just how she is! Maybe Chilchuck rubbed off on her too, or maybe she grew that way more over the years by herself, or maybe she’s always been a little gloomy/ice queen looking, no clue! I don’t think trying to take away a lot of her personality from just the portrait would be effective or wise, but now I do think she’s the more reserved and serious type.
"Yet that night, meeting how he is with his coworkers, reminds her of how he used to be" Asker I looooove this, you’re so right!! That could definitely be part of it, I hadn’t seen that angle. He’s very cheerful and open when sharing drinks with people as we see, so it’s possible she’s like "Wow, he’s having such a good time here with his coworkers. Why isn’t he usually like that with me?" plus just being hit with a ton of bricks of realization that that part of him was why she loved him, but he’s changed so much so maybe they should cut their losses and part away.
And especially since they were childhood friends, too! 20 years sure do change a man. Chilchuck does say she fell into a bad mood after the outing on the way back home but didn’t know why, so there’s a lot of thoughts and feelings we can assign to her. Again, I encourage you to read my big post on it if it interests you, I give many different interpretations and whatnot~!

more normal guy chil headcanons i dont think hes very good at hiding that meijack is his favorite and he isnt super good at relating to his other daughters. he loves them but his closeness with meijack when she was young stuck around much longer than the others, who gravitated more to his wife anyway because she was more affectionate in parenting style
this also means his most ‘my kids are growing up’ moment was like. cats in the cradle ass thing with meijack i feel like. where meijack was just like working and he went to talk to her Once and she was like. im busy. and he was like. Chip Off The Ol Block....... Wipes Tear
#meijack was much more interested in his work than her sister(s) (since puckpatti is likely younger than meijack and flertom i think#so for the most part the other child being Compared with her is her fraternal twin)#and also i imagine as more 'standoffish' like him also was not making the most friends her age. so she was kind of Set to become a locksmith#because the way she bonded with dad was through that kind of thing.#i also imagine chil was like. kind of something like a locksmith in their town but on a more freelance basis so thats why hed be tinkering-#and stuff when he was around#thanks for listening to me :-)#posts

here are some preliminary sketches I had done in my sketchbook for the peepaw chilchuck comic.
I wanted to follow it up with some worldbuilding thoughts I had while working on it, if that sort of thing is interesting to anyone:
- it’d take place 5ish years post-canon
- I changed almost everyone’s hair to show time had passed. Chilchuck and Kabru were the most drastic (I COULDNT STOP THINKING ABOUT THAT LONG HAIR KABRU THAT KUI DREW), Marcille grew out her bangs, Senshi’s beard is slightly shorter, and Izutsumi’s hair is mildly longer. Laios and Falin give me the impression that they’re the brand of neurodivergent that’d pick one haircut and stick to it for the rest of their lives. I almost gave Laios facial hair but idk he’s gotten over his daddy issue enough for that.
- Emertim Chils: I tried to follow both the half-foot and dwarven naming conventions for the baby, so Emer- comes from “emerald” (dwarven names are often gemstones or ore) and -tim because Chilchuck’s father’s first name was Tim :) Dwarves don’t have family names, so Emertim would take Chils, same as Flertom. Usually they’re named after their father but I didn’t wanna name a random dwarf man. thank you Chel for helping name him 🫶💕
- Initially the idea that Chilchuck would keep an entire grandchild a secret was just a joke, but it made sense when I thought about it. I wonder,, would dwarf/half-foot couples have trouble conceiving? Because if so, I’d imagine Flertom may have lost a couple pregnancies. Chilchuck is already such a private person, and I don’t think he’d feel comfortable airing his daughter’s grief like that. They wouldn’t wanna tell anyone until they were sure this baby was gonna make it.
- For the above reason, Chilchuck would absolutely spoil this kid. Not that he wouldn’t have spoiled his grandkids anyway, but I think after all that stress, he’d be extra extra doting. He’d be letting him do things he’d never DREAM of letting his own daughters do. Completely different parenting style.
- I think he’s still too prideful to take advantage of Laios being King (sidenote: is Laios even wealthy??? does a kingdom that sprung up from a previously-sunken continent even have money?? what the fuck is their economy), but like,,, if Laios offered any gifts he wouldn’t exactly say no.
- Izutsumi surprisingly really likes the baby :3 she’d like to take naps with him and he’d like her purrs and she’d have a lot of fun playing with him.
- SENSHI. meemaw mode. That kid would grow up not realizing Senshi isn’t technically one of his grandads. He is FEEEEEDING this kid.
- LAIOS DOES GET TO HOLD THE BABY!!!!!! just. eventually. They don’t actually expect a Tarrare situation LMAO they just wait until the kid is a little less fragile and a little more mobile. I think Laios would be really good with toddlers.
- Chilchuck is very thankful Emertim’s half-foot genes kick in sooner than later because he was getting too big for him to carry.
- Emertim would probably get the extended lifespan. He and Marcille would get to stay friends for a very very long time :’)
- my personal headcanon is that Chilchuck and his wife decide to split. He still loves her and it’s probably still a bit mutual, but after four years of almost no-contact, they decide their communication issues aren’t working well for their relationship. Plus, the Adventurer’s Bible says Chilchuck is renting their old house out to family, and he’d feel bad kicking them out so he and wife could move back in. They’d still be on good terms, and would be good at coordinating when to babysit.

This lady here? Probably Chil's older sister. She can't be his wife because she's at another place in this image.
This seems to be a quite young hafling, I'd say it's one of his little brothers, probably the youngest of the family, but it could be the second younger since he has no freckles. He's also the shortest, look at how he's the only one who's face can be seen.
This is Chilchuck's wife. The dark hair, the toy in her hands... There's no way she isn't. She's probably sitting next to baby Mayjack, why else would she have the toy on the table if Flertom is asleep?
That three hairs sticking out? No room for doubt. This is Chilchuck. Also, sitting by her wife's side. How lovely!
This old lady here is his mother. No doubt. Just look at that hand. This lady's probably in her 50's by now.
If we start it by her getting married at 13 or 14, having at least 5 sons, the midle one having about 13 (he had his two first daughters at that age), she's... wait, she would be 29...? Nonsense, she married/had kids old, that's it.
This is the other younger brother he has.
Chilchuck older brother. No way he'd let his younger brother take baby Flertom in his hands.
But what if...
What if this guy holding Flertom is actually Chil? Why isn't he sitting alongside with his wife? Is this some kind of foreshadowing? Or it's a hafling thing to sit at the eldest sides if you're a married couple?
Looking at this, it's seems that he's quite similar to his youngest brothers, and that those hairs sticking out are more of a family thing. I like to think that Chil's next to his wife and that the baby is held by the older brother.
Also, what a shame that they're strangers now, they seemed like quite a close family... But, on the other hand, we know where does Patty's hair colour came from.
