I think it'll be so fun and funny to see a video game romance poll without garbus. I don't think I've seen one where he doesn't win (or at the very least, get to the finals or whatev.) like we've proven people like him. he's now the spiders georg of romances and should not be counted (derogatory).

ok side note. Thinking about how insane the shepard/miranda ship is. like she was the head of the resurrection project for two years. She saw shepard go from a bunch of meat and tubes slowly back into a person. She led making sure shepards personality and cognitive status wasnt different. She wanted to install a control chip in his brain but TIM said no. she basically literally built him back from nothing.
How she felt about that corpse on the table is so enigmatic, this was an assignment, a project, bringing back a symbol for humanity. it wasnt personal. She didnt know him. She recreated him just as he originally was.
something something. Miranda herself as a genetically engineered human. How that forms and shapes everything about her and her mindset. Her at the helm of this project. Bringing back a symbol, not intending to care for the man.
Then if they fall in love like. Hello. That is so insane.

My headcanon is that Kaidan already had a huge crush on male Shepard during the events in Mass Effect 1, but Shepard is suffering from comphet and internalized homophobia and is also an oblivious idiot who doesn't take a hint. And Kaidan doesn't really push it too clearly either, because he's afraid of what Shepard's reaction would be - understandably so, because Shepard's social circle seems to be full of all kinds of xenophobes and bigots. So Kaidan keeps his feelings to himself.
Shepard then falls in love with Liara - who he pretty much sees as a woman but who also explains that she's not, because asari have no gender. This is the first time he really even thinks about these things, but it's pretty easy to swipe all that under a rug and pretend there's nothing to explore regarding his sexuality. Then after two years of being dead and then resurrected, he's reunited with Liara but the feelings just aren't there, and it's so bittersweet because Liara seems to also have fallen for someone else (Feron) and they know Shepard and Liara wouldn't work anymore but they still care about each other. They talk about it and decide to stay as just friends. His relationship with Liara also has a huge impact on why Kaidan was lowkey acting like a bitter ex during ME2
Shepard then meets Jack - a woman who also greatly suffers from comphet - and they find comfort from each other. And Jack being open about her bisexuality also makes Shepard really think about these things as well, and he slowly starts to explore his own sexuality too. In ME3 we see him comfortably flirting with his male friends and then Kaidan also opens as a romance option and damn is it rewarding when there's been a slow buildup for three games and then they finally get together

i’m almost semi-good at playing Dragon Age so it’s believable that people think that the Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor are good, competent fighters worthy of their legend.
i’m really bad at Mass Effect though so Shepard being a brilliant soldier and celebrated hero just makes everyone else look really dumb

Love how Legion is like "we haven't had enough time to come to a decision on which option would be best for the Geth. You've got this though Shepard! You probably already know what you're going to do!"

Playing through the Citadel DLC on my second-ever time, and it’s just so devastatingly sad knowing what comes next. First time through, I marveled at how brilliant the writing was, how I wished more of the series was as funny and open/honest as that arc. Now though…man, I’m finding excuses not to finish it, not to do the party and then start the endgame. I will, but I’m (for example) doing laundry right now instead of playing. Just…wasn’t prepared for that reaction.

A Gaming Story
Honestly, I’d seen Mass Effect referenced in gaming YouTube video’s I’ve watched over the years, but I never thought it was a game for me. I’m more into fantasy with magic and witches, vampires and werewolves, and the likes. I thought Mass Effect would be a simple shooter game in space.
I know, I know. Before you start - I KNOW. I was so wrong.
As someone who is struggling with depression on a daily basis, this trilogy of games managed to make me feel things again. ME3 fucking wrecked me. Yes, that does deserve to be bolded and italicized because I was bawling my eyes out when I finished the trilogy the first time. And the Citadel DLC? Yeah, well - fuck you too, Bioware. What do the kids these days say? Emotional damage? Yeah, that.

me in my february mass effect playthrough: sorry garrus you can't win the shooting contest bc you'll fuck aliens but you draw the line at fucking a man??? for some reason?? no romance, no winning the contest
me in my august playthrough: sorry garrus, you ARE in a romance with this shepard but she's an infiltrator and i'll die before letting you think you can beat a shepard who literally specializes in sniper rifles
me in my next playthrough probably: sorry garrus i know this shepard is a vanguard and does not specialize in sniper rifles but i can't have you thinking that you're better than her because of that
